Alameda Pediatric Dentistry is excited to celebrate 50 years of providing care for pediatric patients in the Bay Area!
A
lameda Pediatric Dentistry is proud to offer compassionate
and comprehensive dental care to families in four locations: Alameda, Oakland, Pleasanton and Brentwood. The Brentwood office is conveniently located in the John Muir building on Balfour Road.
Since opening in 1971, Alameda Pediatric Dentistry has built a reputation for providing exceptional dental care that families trust. As they have grown, they have modernized operations and technology to exceed industry standards, yet their beginning as a small-town practice continues to define their values and company culture.
APD has deep roots within the Alameda community. Several employees have worked there for over 30 years. In fact, Dr. David Perry has been with APD since 1973! Additionally, many of their employees are former APD patients, including Dr. Sharine Thenard, who became a partner in 2005. She continues the legacy of providing the same attentive, individualized care that she received from the practice as a child. Dr. Mylinh Ngo partnered with APD in 2008 and brings immense empathy and expertise in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Thenard shares, “We employ a focused approach for each individual patient, as they are all unique. Our dentists have specialized in techniques to provide the best possible care. Because
we have a full variety of services and every tool at our disposal, we can provide a complete array of treatment options: preventative, restorative, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and even general anesthesia administered in-office or at Kaiser Hospital.” APD is able to see all children, including those with special needs! They can create an environment where your child feels comfortable, and they take extra steps to cater to whatever your needs may be. Kids rave about the televisions above the chairs, showing whatever Disney+ movie they choose while they receive their cleaning. At the end of the visit, they leave with a special goodie bag and a smile on their face. When you bring your children into the care of this
group of board-certified pediatric dentists, you are placing them in the hands of highly qualified doctors and a team whose life goals have led them to serve you. Families return for treatment, generation after generation. Come visit and let your children tell you why! From the team at APD: “Here at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry, what matters the most is that we leave a positive impact on kids in the Bay Area for decades to come. Our dentists not only treat kids today, but they prepare children for lifelong healthy smiles. We truly love to make kids smile!” For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please call 925-516-4107 or visit www. AlamedaPediatricDentistry.com. – Advertorial

rentwood has many parts that are both endearing and valuable. Its sense of community and connection is one of
the greatest pieces that defines its character and personality. Dr. Shailain Patel, of Orchard Dentistry and Orthodontics, works with an ethic that encompasses and displays the values of compassion and community. Having been in business for many years, Orchard works with its patients with the understanding that they are sensitive and they are human. Patel explained the importance of producing quality work and developing meaningful relationships with his patients. “My goal is more quality over quantity, so I have a practice where we do not see many patients during the day,” Patel said. He said he has a responsibility to look at the patient as a whole, and not solely their teeth. As he says, dentists have a responsibility to improve a persons’ overall health. “I am the type of dentist that doesn’t look just at teeth

“Dermatology is the study of skin, hair and nails,” said Dr. Robert Beer of Balfour Dermatology. “Most people know skin, but they don’t realize hair and nails. In terms of skin, we do lots of things, the most common being mole checks, but we also address psoriasis, warts, and any type of rash, and, of course, diagnosing skin cancer and treating skin cancer.” Beer has been practicing dermatology for more than two decades. His office in Brentwood has been open for 20 years and is home to five practicing dermatologists. He said there are many options for those with skin concerns, including needle-free procedures. “These days we have lots of options – even nonsurgical options – for treating skin cancer, and we can even do a biopsy without a needle,” said Beer. “We also have a large cosmetic practice, so we do Botox and fillers and lasers, and we have

He is also concerned about rising skin cancer rates in young people and said he believes sunscreen is still a safe way to prevent future problems. “Sunscreen is very important, and so are reapplications,” he said. “The rate of skin cancer for a 60-year-old today is about 20%, but the rate for a child born this year is 50%, so 50% of children will

But skin cancer is not the only thing he and his team handle. “We cover hair problems,” Beer said, adding that general practitioners are often stumped by hair loss. “There are treatments now, there are all kinds of ways of diagnosing hair loss and since we see it for a majority of our people after the age of 40, I think it’s important to find out what’s causing hair loss.” Beer noted his office also diagnoses and treats nail issues on fingernails and toenails, and works with all ages, from newborns to seniors. Because of its longevity and patient commitment, Balfour Dermatology has a following in East County and beyond. Jennifer C. of Oakley said she appreciated the way the office treated her, from the time she booked her appointment all the way through treatment. “Dr. Beer’s office staff is professional and so welcoming every time we walk in the door,” she said. “They acknowledge their patients, are courteous, and friendly. The practitioners explain things thoroughly and answer any questions we may have. Bethany has helped us out in the past and we just love her.

When to get age-based health screenings
E
arly detection is crucial to overcoming serious illnesses. Parents can prioritize
preventive care when raising children, but it’s a crucial component of healthy living as an adult as well. Health professionals recommend various age-specific screenings and tests, and these can serve as a guideline for individuals as they navigate adulthood. The following age-specific health screening recommendations from Beaumont Health and Columbia Doctors Primary Care can serve as an preventive care guideline, though doctors may advise patients to get more frequent screenings depending on their medical histories. 18 to 39 years old ♦ Cholesterol: A cholesterol check should occur around age 20, then every five years until age 35. Afterward it can occur annually. ♦ Skin screening: An annual full body screening will identify any suspicious moles or skin lesions. ♦ Cervical cancer: Women in this age range should receive a Pap smear every three years and an annual pelvic exam. ♦ Breast exam: Self-examination of the breasts and examination by a clinical provider should take place every year. ♦ Testicular exam: Men should conduct self exams for testicular abnormalities. Doctors may examine the testicles during annual physicals as well. ♦ Tdap vaccine: All adults should get the Tdap vaccine if they did not receive it as an adolescent to protect against pertussis, and then a Td (tetanus, diphtheria) booster shot every 10 years.
♦ HPV vaccine: The human papillomavirus vaccine is recommended if you did not receive it as an adolescent. 40 to 64 years old ♦ Zoster (Shingles) vaccine: Two doses of this vaccine will be administered between two and six months apart starting at age 50 and up. ♦ Colorectal screening: A colonoscopy to detect any colorectal illnesses is recommended beginning at age 50. ♦ Prostate screening: Prostate screenings begin at age 50 unless you are a high-risk individual, in which case screenings begin at age 40. ♦ Osteoporosis: Doctors may recommend a bone density test and osteoporosis
screening at age 50 and up if certain risk factors are present. ♦ Lung cancer screening: If you are a past or current smoker, it’s wise to have an annual lung cancer screening. The American Lung Association says adults age 55 and up can have this screening covered by health insurance. ♦ Mammogram: Women should begin receiving annual mammograms at age 40. 65 years and older ♦ Cervical cancer: Most women can stop getting Pap smears at this age if they have no history of cervical cancer. Women who have had a hysterectomy may no longer need pelvic exams after age 65.
♦ Pneumococcal and pneumonia vaccines: These are recommended every five years for certain conditions and risk factors. ♦ Cognitive health: Doctors may assess your cognitive health to see if there are any risk factors for dementias. In addition to these screenings, doctors may conduct annual depression screenings to assess mental health. Routine blood glucose monitoring may be necessary based on risk factors for diabetes. Individuals are urged to speak to their doctors to map out a health screening schedule specific to their needs. – Courtesy of Metro Creative
More screen time can harm kids’ health
I
ncreased screen time might be
leading to more mental health problems for kids, according to
the Journal of the American Medical Association-Pediatrics (JAMA-Pediatrics). “During the COVID-19 pandemic, many children increased screen time use due to online school, stay-at-home orders and general social isolation,” said Richard Freed, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist at Kaiser Permanente Antioch Medical Center. “JAMA-Pediatrics recently reported that children nearly doubled their screen time use during the pandemic. Unfortunately, this increase is posing mental health risks for kids because it displaces the activities we know are helpful to children and adolescents, including quality time with family, physical activity,
and engaging with their teachers and school communities.” The cumulative effect of excessive screen time is leading to mental health problems for children, experts say. “Children are experiencing anxiousness and stress in part because screen time has remained elevated even as pandemic restrictions are lifted,” Freed added. Here are some tips for helping your child cut back on his or her screen time use: ♦ Help children and adolescents do things that we know support their mental health, including time with family and physical activity. That leaves less time for screens. ♦ Kids might need parent support and structure to get back into school routines, such as turning off screens and completing homework. ♦ Cutting back on screen time use does not mean no screen time at all. Try setting some limits on children’s usage and work

on a plan to limit screen time per day. ♦ Don’t allow children to use their screens before bedtime, which can disrupt sleep. Encourage them to read books or play quiet games instead. ♦ Model good behavior. Put your own screens away and show children the importance of finding other activities to occupy their time. ♦ Encourage children to play outdoors or take up a new hobby. Find ways to expand their in-person social interactions, such as joining a club or an after-school activity. ♦ Go on walks, have family game nights, start a family book club, or work on puzzles. Find other ways to keep your children occupied and engaged. ♦ Talk to your children about the importance of staying engaged with others and how screens prohibit them from developing the social skills they need to be successful. – Courtesy of Kaiser Permanente
