Hundreds endured a cold, wind-driven rain as they gathered in a Walmart parking lot in Antioch Tuesday night for a candlelight vigil to remember the young victims of a fatal accident that occurred across the street the prior Friday, Jan. 11. The weather and large crowd made it difficult for many to hear or see anything, but still the mourners remained and struggled to keep their candles lit in the drenching rain. Jaia Lightner, 13, of Antioch, and Leana Rubin, 17, of Oakley were identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office as the two fatalities in the single-vehicle accident. Four other teens suffered injuries ranging from moderate to life-threaten-

City pushes forward enhancement projects Texas-Sized Tournament by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Various community-enhancement projects are moving forward in Oakley, according to a recently released report. These projects include the new recreation center at the old Moura Property on O’Hara Avenue, which should be completed in March; several planned Laurel Road improvements; and a new San Joaquin Joint Power Authorities train station platform. “There is a lot going on,” said Oakley Mayor Claire Alaura. Crews are currently finishing up the recreation center’s landscaping and other outdoor elements along with interior components in anticipation of completion at the

The 9,000-square-foot center is expected to include a large multipurpose room with a dividing partition, kitchen, stage, meeting and office rooms, and a turf field. “If you have driven along O’Hara, it’s really taken shape,” Rohani said. “We are in the home stretch of the project.” On the heels of that project are several planned Laurel Road im-

provements, city officials said. That work calls for the Laurel Road and Rose Avenue intersection to be widened and signalized, a portion of Laurel Road from Rose Avenue to Mellowood Drive widened, and a segment from Mellowood Drive to Main Street reconstructed. The heavily trafficked Laurel Road and Rose Avenue intersection currently operates as a fourway stop – which is not ideal – with one lane of traffic in each direction,

while the Laurel Road segment between Rose Avenue and Mellowood Drive is a narrow, two-lane road struggling to accommodate the community’s traffic demands, Rohani said. The third planned Laurel Road improvement, from Mellowood Drive to Main Street, takes care of an area that has required frequent and costly repairs in recent years and needs to be redone. Work is expected to begin on the Rose to Mellowood portion at the end of January, with the intersection improvements scheduled to begin in March and the Mellowood to Main Street section in the 20202021 fiscal year.
