Freedom honors top students by Aly Brown Staff Writer

As summer rapidly approaches, area schools have begun to announce their highest-ranking and second highest-ranking students – valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively – and Freedom High School has two individuals worth celebrating. Wyatt Hamrick – Valedictorian Recognized as the student with the highest cumulative GPA, Wyatt Hamrick landed the coveted valedictorian title for the class of 2017 with a 4.42 GPA. An academically geared individual, he also obtained a place on the Principal’s Honor Roll for the past four years and participated in the Heritage STEM Club, in addition to playing football his fresh-

ing at the Monument Crisis Center and the Contra Costa Food Bank, as well as two years volunteering at

Menlo Park Veterans Hospital. “Wyatt is a thoughtful contemplative young man,” said AP English teacher Megan LaVallee. “His quiet demeanor masks an intellectual mastermind and a maturity beyond his years. His tenacity with his critical thinking provokes stimulus in his peers, uplifting all who surround him. His diligent and persevering nature will serve him well as he embarks into his future.” When it comes to his future, Wyatt will attend the University of California Los Angeles to study aerospace engineering, with plans to pursue a career in the development of aircraft, spacecraft or electrical technology. “My mom was always there for support and motivation during

Heritage Fells Freedom

Over the next few weeks, The Press will explore the plans for the 2,712 acres in southeast Antioch and 431 acres – 285 of which are undeveloped – in northwest Brentwood. The proposed future extension of Brentwood’s Sand Creek Road, westerly into Antioch to Deer Valley Road and possibly to the southerly end of Dallas Ranch Road, will connect key pieces of property in the two cities. A 12-person working group, comprised of city councilmembers, planning commissioners, property owners, business leaders and residents, is in the early stages of developing a specific plan for a key piece of real estate in northwest Brentwood. The property – surrounded by Lone Tree Way to the north, Heidorn Ranch Road to the west, Sand Creek Road to the south and Shady Willow Lane to the east – is expected to be the city’s future job-generating hub and an ideal location for mixed-use development.
