The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and American Medical Response medical transportation company responded to the community’s need to learn lifesaving skills during National Emergency Medical Services Week in late May. During free, hands-on lessons at Fire Station 53 in Oakley, the professional first responders taught attendees cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator operation and how to stop bleeding. “The average citizen plays a critical component in the chain of survival,” said fire board see Responders page 30

amino Diablo east of the Byron Highway, above, was one of several vegetation and brush fires that ignited throughout East County Wednesday afternoon, around 1:30 p.m. East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) reported at least seven blazes in the area at press time with the heaviest in the Byron area. The infernos reached from Camino Diablo to the Byron Airport, Mountain House and beyond. No cause of the fires was available as of press time. Oakley police looking for burglary suspects On To State The Oakley Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating two of four individuals wanted in connection with a break-in at Premier Self Storage in Oakley. On May 11, at approximately midnight, four suspects were involved in the break-in of storage units at Premier Self Storage, 2150 Main St., in Oakley. The suspects loaded a U-Haul truck with a large amount of stolen property and left the scene. Images of all the suspects and their vehicle were captured on the business security camera system, and the Oakley Police Department (OPD) has been able to identify all four suspects. They are: Courtney Miles of Oakley, Darrel Allen of Antioch, Derek Marino of Antioch and Ryan Marino of Antioch.

The Oakley Police Department has taken Miles and Allen into custody on suspicion of burglary and Derek and Ryan Marino are currently at large. As a part of the investigation, Contra Costa County Sheriff deputies arrested Darrell Allen in Bay Point on May 23. At the time, Allen was in possession of a handgun stolen from one of the storage units. On May 24,
