by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

If dogs could smile, they’d likely be grinning at Oakley City Council’s recent decision. The council approved a contract for phase one of the city’s future dog park on 2.5 acres at Nunn-Wilson Family Park on Oxford Drive. Slated to be complete by spring or summer of next year, the site will include fenced areas for both small and large breeds, a water-play area, agility equipment, benches, turf, a picnic area, drinking fountains and other amenities for dogs and their owners. “Pets are important members of see Park page 34

A recently released Contra Costa County Grand Jury report concluded that the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District needs to open additional stations to provide adequate protection and recommends changes to tackle the district’s funding crisis. The district recently dropped again to three stations with the closure of Knightsen Station 94 on July 1. “Three fire stations are insufficient to provide adequate urban and suburban fire protection coverage in a fire district with a population of 110,000 and an area of 249 square miles,” stated the report. Bethel Island resident Mark Whitlock relayed a story to the fire board about a realestate transaction that fell through late in the process over the cost of fire insurance. “The deal fell through in the 11th hour when the people got their final notice from their insurance company on what their fire insurance was going to cost,” he said. “They did not give a dollar amount, but it was over four and a half times what was listed in the escrow papers.” The district’s issues stem see Report page 34
