The closure of one of four East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) fire stations in July is affecting the district’s ability to respond to calls, according to statistics. The number of hours that all three engines were tied up and unavailable to respond to incidents jumped from four in June to 15 in July. The number of calls that went unanswered by district fire engines also increased, from nine to 31. “I know that having no engines for 15 hours is something that none of us wants; it’s just a fact of life with a three-station department,” said ECCFPD Board President Joel Bryant. The district’s fourth station in Knightsen closed on July 1, when supplemental multijurisdictional funds given to the district in May 2016 ran out – leaving only three stations to cover 114,000 residents and 249 square miles of property in the cities of Brentwood and Oakley, along

Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services is hosting a free workshop for family caregivers Tuesday, Aug. 15, in the Merlot Conference Room at Oakley City Hall, located at 3231 Main St., from 1 to 3 p.m.
Getting support to caregivers before they burn out is the goal of a free workshop for family members presented by Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services (MOWSOS). The free workshop for caregivers is Tuesday, Aug. 15, in the Merlot Conference Room at Oakley City Hall, located at 3231 Main St., from 1 to 3 p.m. Another workshop will take place Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the Brentwood Senior Activity Center, located at 193 Griffith Lane, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. “There is nothing more stressful than being responsible for the care of another,” said Mary Hanenburg, MOWSOS program specialist. “There are many stressors from a variety of sources, and one thing we know is that chronic stress is linked to several leading causes of death.”

According to Hanenburg, family caregivers face stress when wondering if they are doing enough or doing the right thing or when other family members are not involved in the care. The medical profession, financial pressure, stress associated with trying to work while they care for their loved ones and other sources are all factors as well. “Caregiver burnout is very real,” said Hanenburg. “They face pressure from all sides.” The workshops will help attendees deal with the pressure they face as they gain support from other caregivers in similar situations and gain helpful resources. Speakers will cover different topics, including fall prevention, care for the caregiver, how to use a gait belt, Elderly Wish Foundation and more. see Caregivers page 30
