The Oakley United Parcel Service distribution center is gearing up for the holiday rush of packages. The facility, on Live Oak Avenue, just north of Orchard Park Elementary School, will add 3,880 square feet of modular buildings to its 2,500-square-foot building to store overflow packages. The Oakley City Council recently approved the additions. “Part of the deal is that after the New Year, we will pave the site and become a more permanent site right there,” said Nelson Ye, UPS representative. The extra 14-foot-high buildings on the 4.8 acre site, will mean 50 trucks, as opposed to the current 30, will enter and exit the facility daily. School traffic isn’t expected to be impacted since the trucks exit around 6 a.m. and return between 6 and 8 p.m. at night, Ye said. see UPS page 30A

Class turns students into athletic managers by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
The Athletics Management classes at Freedom and Liberty High Schools look like any other class, but they are one of a kind. The classes, believed to be the only ones offered in the state, teach students how to work in the athletics field, touching on topics such as marketing, guest relations, safety and emergency planning and
use of video broadcasting and social media. “I think it gives them a better understanding of athletics as a whole and also opens up an avenue for students who are interested in athletics,” said Freedom High School Athletic Director Steve Amaro. “Maybe it won’t be a collegiate career or a professional career, but it’s a manger for the Stockton Ports or in the field of public relations. In that sense, they are getting exposure to something
they wouldn’t have gotten exposure to until they got to college. Students are thrown into the center of athletic events, assisting with video broadcasting, food and ticket sales and site directing, which includes welcoming visiting schools to campus. Students are required to make presentations highlighting their experience and ways to improve. Away from the action, students are briefed on eventmanagement scenarios, such as
protecting athletes and spectators during active lightning and spotting hypothermia. Industry experts, such as high school sports governing body officials, also routinely speak to the classes. Most students say their favorite part of the class is setting up and working at athletic events. “It’s fun, because you get to watch the whole game while you are working,” said Freedom student Nina Sparacino, see Class page 30A
