When Donald Trump took the presidency last year, the Oakley Union Elementary School District (OUESD) took to the drawing board to draft a ‘safe haven’ resolution that district officials and administration believe has since made immigrant families less fearful. At the beginning of the year, the OUESD entered into work sessions and came away from the meetings with the safe haven declaration. The intent was to ensure that Oakley families – whose lives could potentially flip upside down if the rhetoric from the campaign trail came to fruition – understood the school district would not gather or report immigration statuses.

tudents from Freedom High School recently accompanied John Sierra, AP environmental science teacher, to Vacaville, where they joined more than a hundred volunteers as part of the Urban Farmers organization. All together, they picked more than 50,000 pounds of fruit that will be distributed to food banks, shelters and people in need throughout the greater Bay Area. The Urban Farmers is a grassroots, all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that harvests backyard fruit for donation to the needy. To register a tree or volunteer, visit www.theurbanfarmers.org.

An early morning fire that swept through an Oakley home claimed the life of a man who was reportedly living in the home illegally. East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) Battalion Chief Ross Macumber said that when firefighters arrived on scene, neighbors reported hearing screams coming from inside the home. By the time they were able to get inside, they found a man collapsed in a front bathroom. Paramedics were able to restore the man’s pulse and he was transported to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch where he later succumbed to his injuries. see Fire page 26
