Oakley faces 10-percent water cut by Dave Roberts Staff Writer

It appears that all of those rain dances that Oakleyites have been doing on their lawns and in their backyards have paid off. Significant rains in February and March have put a damper on fears of drought and talk of mandatory water rationing. As a result, residents in the Diablo Water District (DWD), which includes all of Oakley, might be asked to voluntarily cut their water usage by only 10 percent in the coming year rather than take the more drastic mandatory measures that had been contemplated. California’s water situation was looking gloomy in early February, when the water content of the Sierra snowpack was dipping to levels not seen since the 1976-77 drought, according to Mike Yeraka, DWD general manager, in a presentation to the Oakley City Council on March 24. “That was the very bad drought we had,” he said. “It was just above that (level). That’s why all of the water managers were so scared. It was horrible; it was bleak.” But that was before the rain gods smiled on the Golden State. Now the snowpack water

Health-care cuts to impact East County by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer Undocumented immigrants living in Contra Costa County took a health-care hit this week when the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to cut $6 million in primary care services from the county’s Basic Health Care Program. The decision will eliminate non-emergency services for nearly 6,000 illegal residents, the largest percentage coming from East County. “Supervisor Glover made a vote that he didn’t want to make,” said Ed Diokno, public policy analyst for Glover’s office. “But he feels he has to support it because he believes you can’t spend money the county doesn’t have (for the Basic Health Care Program).” County Health Services Director William Walker, who presented the proposal to the Board of Supervisors, said the decision was difficult: “It’s the hardest thing

Nancy Marquez, youth organizer for CCISCO. “What we are saying is that it’s a really bad policy. These people cannot afford these cuts. It’s a really horrible situation.” Under the new provisions of the plan, pregnant women and children will still be eligible for primary care and can receive treatment for other conditions as well, including communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and the flu. Paid for out of the county’s general fund, the Basic Health Care Program is designed to provide medical services to low-income uninsured residents. Those who qualify must be seen at either the county’s free medical center in Martinez or at one of its health centers located throughout Contra Costa. The CineLux Delta Cinema Saver offers the cheapest deals in town for feature ﬁlm entertainment.

While businesses come and go in downtown Brentwood, the glow of the landmark Delta Cinema marquee continues to shine each night, just as it has for nearly eight decades. The movie theater has seen its ups and downs over the years, but CineLux President Paul Gunsky, who took over and remodeled the 1930’s-era theater in 2000, said the Delta is weathering the storm. In response to a declining economy and competition presented by the new Rave Motion Pictures, which opened at the Streets of Brentwood, the Delta rebranded itself as the CineLux Delta Cinema Saver in January. “We want the name to reflect our service,” Gunsky said. “With the addition of a new theater in town, we noticed a significant reduction in attendance, but that was to be expected. People were curious and wanted to see it for themselves, but now they are realizing that we offer the same product at a much lower price.” The Delta has reduced its ticket prices by one dollar to $4 for matinee shows (before 6 p.m.) and $6 for regular adult admission. Seniors and children under the age of 13 get in for $4, and students with ID are admitted for $5. Terrific Tuesday specials have also been reduced. Tickets previously $4 on Tuesdays are now $3.50 for all Tuesday shows except special engagements. Brentwood resident Mary Warren, who came to a Tuesday showing of “Monsters vs. Aliens” with her son, said she won’t go to the bigger theaters because the prices are too high.

“This is a nice little theater,” Warren said. “We’ve been in Brentwood for 20 years and we don’t go anywhere else. I love this place. It’s so cozy, and you can’t beat the price. The other places might be bigger and new, but they are too expensive. Besides, I want to support downtown businesses. I would hate to see this place close.” Delta Manager Laura Angel said many patrons have voiced concern about the theater’s future: “A lot of people ask about how the theater is doing. They see places open and close downtown, and they worry about whether or not our little theater is going to make it. They know the new theater presents competition and they are worried about the economy in general. “We’re doing OK, though. Business has been good. We did see a reduction in attendance once the Rave opened, but ultimately, we offer two different experiences. We can never be them, but they can never be us. They have more screens and digital projectors, but we have the small quaint ambiance. You smell the popcorn as soon as you come in the door, and you get a more intimate experience. We get a chance to chat with our customers.” Angel said she and her team of 10 employees will do whatever it takes to keep the Delta marquee lit at night. “We will pull out all the stops and keep offering these promotions so that we can continue to bring this service to the community. Until the economy started to act up, I never thought of going to the movies as a luxury, but not everyone can afford to go out anymore. Kelly is a celebrated performance artist, actress, storyteller and published playwright. Her repertoire includes folk and fairy tales, African-American stories, ghost/mystery stories and original material. Her goal is to help students expand their world through story in order to understand and appreciate other cultures and think imaginatively. I’ve made some minor edits.] Californians should be deeply skeptical of anyone who demands money up front and makes extravagant promises that they can save their home. It is unlawful for foreclosure consultants to collect money before (1) they give you a written contract describing the services they promise to provide and (2) they actually perform all the services described in the contract, such as negotiating new monthly payments or a new mortgage loan. Oakley helps HARP with pet microchips by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer Each year in East County, thousands of dogs and cats go missing, and while identification tags are good, microchips are better. And now, thanks to a community grant program awarded through the City of Oakley, local pet owners can purchase the microchips for just a fraction of the cost. The Homeless Animals Response Program (HARP) has received a $650 grant through Oakley’s Community Benefit Program that sets aside dollars each year to support nonprofit groups such as HARP. “This was created as a way for the city to recognize people in the area who are working to make life better for Oakley and its residents, and HARP is certainly one of them,” said Leeann Lorono, who organizes the grant program for the city. Karen Kops, president of HARP, said she learned about the grant opportunity late last year and immediately thought the money might be used to help residents and their pets. The microchip seemed a perfect way to put the money to use. “ID tags are great, but they can be removed or lost. However, with a microchip, reunification with an owner – as opposed to trying to figure out where the animals

belong – is just quicker and better,” said Kops. “It’s just an extra kind of insurance policy.” Quick, painless and no larger than a grain of rice, the microchips are implanted in the scruff of a dog or cat quickly with a syringe needle. The typical cost of a microchip is around $65, but for only $10, Oakley residents can purchase a voucher good for one implantation of a pre-registered microchip through HARP. The grant will allow for the purchase of 30 microchips, and the $10 charge will go into a revolving voucher fund to keep the program running for as long as possible. Proof of the chip’s success was evident last week, said Kops, when HARP staff picked up some dogs from the county shelter in Martinez that were scheduled to be put down. A staff member who is an Oakley resident took one of the dogs to Oakley Veterinary Medical Center and had the animal scanned. The microchip was discovered, and a reunion between the dog and its family was quickly arranged. Cypress Veterinary Hospital and Oakley Veterinary Medical Center have partnered with HARP to provide the microchip program to the community. Students, seniors mingle Applause rained down on Krey Elementary School first-graders from Mrs. Michel and Mrs. Sanabria’s class as they entered the Eskaton Lodge during a recent visit to the assisted-living facility. The students recited poetry and presented Eskaton residents with art they had created to thank the senior citizens for the oral history they had provided. The visit was part of a social studies unit in which students learn about the differences between life as contemporary first-grader and the life seniors lived as first-graders. It was the students’ second visit to

Eskaton in a two-month span. During the first vist, students paired up with seniors and conducted interviews. They learned what life was like for a youngster 70, 80 and even 90 years ago, and used the information for numerous class activities covering multiple curriculum areas. The meetings between the seniors and the students provided history lessons that the average textbook couldn’t provide. Edna Hill’s new theater needs a name by Samie Hartley Staff Writer

Brentwood Union School District Superintendent Merrill Grant is asking for the community’s help in the construction of the new theater at Edna Hill Middle School – but no heavy lifting is required. As the facility inches toward completion, it’s time to settle on name for the new building that will be home to a 295seat theater and band and drama classrooms. “This new theater will be a focal point for the community,” Grant said. “It’s a project funded by Measure B, which the people voted for, and we’re asking for their help to select a name for the building. When it’s done, the building will be a nice addition, not only to Edna Hill, but the entire community.” Edna Hill Principal Kirsten Jobb is on the committee to help select the name. She said no names have been submitted yet, but she hopes the community and Edna Hill students will be involved in the process. “We hope that students will offer suggestions and make nominations for the naming, and then I would like them to help vote on the name once we’ve narrowed the list down,” Jobb said. According to the Brentwood Union School District Board policy, buildings

Nominations may be submitted to

the BUSD via e-mail or postal mail. There is no official form to fill out and there is no need to provide reasons for a specific nomination. All that is required to make a nomination is the name of the nominee. A list of nominations will be compiled and submitted to the selection committee,

which will make a decision this summer. BUSD Chief Business Official Scott Anderson said the new theater will be nearly three times the size of the existing Bristow Community Theater, which will be demolished once the new building is up and running. The project is currently three weeks ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed in December, allowing staff enough time to set up the new band and drama classrooms so that students can use the facility beginning in January of 2010 once they return to campus after winter break. Anderson estimates that the project will cost about $13 million, which includes the construction of the new food services and outside dining area being built adjacent from the theater simultaneously. The food services portion of the project is expected to be complete in July – just in time for the 2009-10 school year to begin. Jobb said she and the students and staff are anxious for the project’s completion. “The theater will be gorgeous once it is finished,” she said. “It will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, but even though everything is going to be new, I hope to keep that close community feeling that our current theater has. The old theater has a special feeling to it and I hope we can transfer that feeling to our new theater. I want to keep that closeness see Theater page 20A

It was the worst pain I’ve ever had.” Wisdom had the procedure done at Kaiser Permanente in Antioch, where he spent three days in the hospital before being transferred to a rehab facility in Concord for another 12 days. The high-energy, upbeat Wisdom says he slept a lot those first few days – between torture sessions with the physical therapists. “Boy, they get you up right away. They don’t let you sit or anything,” said Wisdom. “It was hell. But I’m not saying that about them (the staff); they couldn’t have been nicer to me. It just hurt a lot.” “He did do a lot of yelping,” concedes his wife Kay, who said that after the first week, her husband began “pushing the wheelchair around with his feet like the little old ladies do.” Wisdom’s days are currently spent in physical therapy at home and the hospital. A brand-new recaltrant exercise bike sits in the front room, where the patient can watch television (“a little March Madness and CSI”) or gaze outside at the waters of Discovery Bay as he coaxes his new knees into shape. Home three weeks now, cabin fever is just starting to set in for both Wisdoms, who are accustomed to jet-setting off on trips with their friends and family. Sitting around has made them both a little lazy, they concede, and they look forward to things returning to normal. “Life’s a little different right now,” said

Still bruised and a little swollen after ﬁve weeks, Richard Wisdom’s knees are slowly healing. Kay. “For one thing, we’re sleeping a lot later than we use to, and we’ve had to postpone some of our trips. But we’ll do them next year. Right now we’re just concentrating on him getting better.” It’ll be another 12 weeks or so before Wisdom can get behind the steering wheel of a car, or his beloved Wave Runner. “Maybe by June,” he said. “I don’t know; we’ll see how I do. What I really want to do is shoot some pictures, but I’m not getting around too well right yet.” For now, he’s sticking to the La-Z-Boy, his walker and wheelchair, although Kay said the wheelchair isn’t long for this world: “I told

him that by the end of the month, it’s gone; he’s getting too used to it. The same for the walker, but we’ll give him more time with that.” Still stiff and a little bit thinner – he has lost about 10 pounds – Wisdom is now able to make his way up and down a few steps with his walker, and says the doctor predicts full mobility within six months. Despite the pain and hardship, Wisdom is grateful for the procedure and content with his decision to replace both knees simultaneously. “I’m happy about it, at least I think I am,” he laughed. “I’ll let you know six months from now. Ask me then.”

Anticipate or Chase I’m a huge football (soccer) fan and all around sports enthusiast, thanks mainly to parents forced into surrendering their weekends in the wake of youth athletics, I literally grew up not only kicking around a ball, but learning to love many sports. However somewhere during my freshman year I realized my sport of choice had consumed my life; there was the traveling team in the spring, my high school’s varsity team in the fall, the fast-paced indoor game during the winter and finally the Olympic Development Program or ODP in the summer. My passion of “the beautiful game” had become an obsession, I needed to take a step back in order to reflect and apply lessons learned on the pitch into real life. Today it is funny, no matter how much time passes between those days and now, I find resorting back to principals taught through organized athletics can offer just as much insight as principals taught before practice started, during organized education. For a perfect example we’ll use our current real estate market as the subject of conversation, and review how principals taught both on the field and in the class room can be applied when confronted with the question of whether or not now is the time to buy. Let’s start with elements that make a solid soccer player and then move onto those that make a solid investor. Experienced players move to go to the ball, not waiting for it to come to them. Beginners focus on the ball, veterans focus on the dynamics of the game and anticipate. Learning the game means learning where to be, and what to do, both on offense and on defense. Great players need only touch the ball a dozen times, if that, during a ninety minute match to truly be effective in aiding their team to success. Putting those same thoughts into words for

So if you wait for the robins, spring will be over.” And in Phil Town’s New York Times best seller, Rule #1, Mr. Town states, “I won’t own a business ten minutes if I’m not willing to own it for ten years.” Now we have a great soccer player who doesn’t move around too much, only touching the ball when he has to, and an excellent investor who is very methodical about his moves, and doesn’t simply chase his money all over the market. The dynamics of investing - whether in real estate, the stock or bond markets, classic cars, art, coins, anything - is essentially the dynamics of sports: anticipate or chase. Whether you ask your high school coach or your high school economics teacher, the key is not to slow down and hang your head when things don’t go as you expect, rather adjust to the unexpected result, and move to the next place your game sense tells you is your next opportunity. Our real estate market is not as simple as buy low sell high, but any athlete/investor knows an entire sporting event/market can run its course and they only remember that one opportunity, that play or pass or great buy that got away. The right time for Civic Center project The Brentwood City Council decision last week to proceed with the city’s new Civic Center project was the right move at the right time, and stands to do even more good than the project originally DITORIAL intended. The 3-2 vote, with Mayor Bob Taylor and Councilmen Chris Becnel and Bob Brockman in favor, and Councilmen Erick Stonebarger and Brandon Richey dissenting, puts the $64 million first phase of the project on a timeline to go to bid in June and for construction to start in September. It will include a new city hall, a new community center, an enlarged library and a re-vamped and bigger City Park. A planned parking structure included in the project’s master plan has been moved to phase two, several years down the road. The need for a new civic center to accommodate growth (most of which has already taken place) has been on the city’s agenda for more than a decade, with input from six city councils, four mayors and three city managers. Work on the current

design began in 2006, and was the subject of numerous public workshops, surveys and other opportunities for public input. The collapse of the economy, however, put a damper on the project, the grand total of which will eventually run to about $75 million. As a result, the council has moved cautiously for the last year, until the economy actually became a reason to proceed. Some 100 workers will be on-site every day during the two years of construction, not only providing sorely need jobs but also bolstering the customer base for beleaguered downtown businesses suffering from the downturn and increased competition from other areas of the city. Proceeding now also minimizes the overall impact of construction on those businesses, since things will already be disrupted by the downtown streetscape improvements currently underway. A vote to delay the project would have meant a second disruption to the struggling commercial area, a blow that would likely have come after the recovery was underway. The vote should also benefit the downtown another way: investors who might consider occupying some of the vacant

Her comment to Piepho was “Show me one thing you have done for Byron.” Byron should be of no concern to Sandwyck, since she is a homeowner in Discovery Bay. She needs to be attending her CSD Board meetings. She was the old MAC’s secretary. Now her services are no longer needed.

storefronts there are far more likely to do so in the wake of the city’s own investment. Had the project been put off, the appearance of timidity on the part of city officials – the very people trying to encourage boldness in the private sector – would surely have made a negative impact. There are other factors that make the timing of council decision good, including the fact that interest rates and construction costs are at record lows. Projects in Brentwood and nearby cities have recently been bid between 15 and 25 percent lower than expectations, a phenomenon that will likely vanish once federal stimulus dollars begin to flow and contractors get busy once again. There’s always an element of risk involved in a project of this size no matter when it is undertaken. Precautions such as delaying construction of the parking structure, and a plan to borrow money only as it’s needed help mitigate that risk, as does the city’s well-established policy of saving. The largest share of the project expenses, $39 million, will go toward the new city hall, and almost $25 million of those expenses

Editor: I think we should stop graffiti. Graffiti is letters, words or numbers written or drawn on public property. Graffiti is bad because property owners have to pay money to clean up something that someone else did. For example, if someone did graffiti on someone else’s fence, the owner would have to buy paint to re-paint it or buy a replacement. Another reason why graffiti is bad is because it is ugly. Plus, who wants to live in an ugly world? Some people like graffiti because it looks unique and artistic. But there is nothing artistic about something someone did to your property and you having to pay for it. Graffiti is made without

Both are also keen to keep costs down, a goal shared by all five councilmen as well as city staff. The council last week, therefore, correctly gave the go-ahead to a project that has been the subject of lengthy, meticulous study, benefited from plenty of public input, been planned with a conservative financial approach, will minimize impacts on (and in some ways benefit) nearby businesses while under construction, will provide hundreds of jobs, will proceed under intense scrutiny, and will help keep the city’s beloved downtown the heart and soul of Brentwood. It’s the right move, at the right time, for the right reasons.

The building of Mayor Bob’s office will bring to light that

Ok, Entrepreneurs, I don’t know what you’ve been reading or hearing, but I have to work at believing that the United States is still the best place in the world to own a business, let alone show up day to day when surrounded by doom and gloom. I have somewhat of an advantage over many of my clients, because I started my law practice in a recession in 1987. But this time it’s different. This time I believe that there is a “new economy.” That is, in the past, if I just waited, people would start hiring me again just like they did before. So, I had to use a credit line to get through the hard times. Even though a year seems like eons when business isn’t happening, looking back, it’s not a big deal. But this time it’s different. Between a new President with some new ideas that are being put into action as we speak, and a global economy that is suffering like our own, and a new generation who is “e-brained” (they actually have studies showing that my generation doesn’t process information in the same way as the current generation), the rules are different. The faster we learn the rules about the effects of “social media”, where money comes from, and how money is spent, the quicker our economy and our businesses will recover. The staff recommendation at a CCWD hearing Wednesday night (the results of which were not available at press time) is to request a voluntary 15-percent water reduction from CCWD customers. That’s much more lenient than the 25-percent mandatory conservation that would have been imposed if the late rains had not fallen. “Of course, we are all praying for the voluntary allocation,” Yeraka told the council last week. cut back their water use, the district could have been hit with a $2.5 million penalty this summer – nearly matching the $2.7 million that the district currently spends on water for an entire year. Even if DWD had that kind of money to spend or waste, failing to cut back by at least 25 percent could have led CCWD to ration Oakley’s water supply next year. “I don’t want to scare you; I’m just letting you know that’s what they were telling us under the 25-percent mandatory requirement,” Yeraka said. But if CCWD adopts the 15-percent voluntary conservation plan as expected, local water users will be able to gargle and shower much easier this summer. That’s because DWD dug a well in Glen Park in 2006 that mostly has been held in reserve for just such a water shortage. “I have not been using all of that wa-

ter supply the past few years,” said Yeraka. “This is the very reason why. Because I wanted to provide a buffer of additional water supply for Oakley in case we do get into a drought. And if we do have to use 100 percent of that well, the water is there to help make up for that. So that’s my thinking as a water manager: to make sure we have some reserves for drought periods.” As a result, DWD customers might be asked to cut back their water usage by only 10 percent in the coming year. In addition, it appears that DWD might not implement its plan for a tiered water rate that punishes heavier users. The current water charge is $2.48 per hundred cubic feet (HCF) of water, which equates to 748 gallons. The rate would remain at $2.48/HCF for those using up to 15 HCF per month, which includes nearly a third of DWD customers. It would rise

to $3.48 for those using 16-30 HCF per month and to $4.48 for those using more than 31 HCF. But if the new rates aren’t imposed, water users won’t be off the hook to cut back. “If folks don’t conserve, we’ll have less supply (provided by CCWD) for next year,” said Yeraka. “If we have another dry winter next year, they will look at our water usage for this year and we could be penalized in that regard if we don’t conserve. “We are planning for mandatory conservation but hoping for voluntary. But we do know something is going to come where we will be asking our customers to do some level of conservation.” Mayor Carol Rios said, “We all will be hoping for voluntary. But, you know, we are at a point in the world that it’s not a bad idea to learn to conserve a little.”

According to figures released from the county, Rapaport said roughly 42 percent of those who will be affected by the cuts live in East County, the majority located closer to Sutter Delta than Kaiser. “My understanding is that we (Sutter Delta) are at least as close to the county for those living in the Pittsburg and Bay Point areas, so they are more likely to come to us,”

said Rapaport. “We were financially challenged before the economy went down and we’re all suffering now. Certainly we would like to solve any imbalances, and I believe there is hope to do that. But the primary concern is and always will be patient care.” Kaiser Permanente CEO Mike TullyCintron doesn’t argue that Sutter Delta most likely sees more ER patients than Kaiser by virtue of their location, but maintains that their member services organization is set up and ready to serve all who come through their doors. “I agree that they are probably busier because they are in the line of traffic, so to speak, for that area,” said Tully-Cintron. “But we certainly invite anyone with a need to come to our EDs (emergency departments), and they don’t have to be members

to be seen (in our emergency departments). We will never turn anyone away.” The concern among local health-care professionals is that when patients are denied primary care, they ignore their symptoms until their conditon becomes worse and they’re forced to use the emergency room. Regardless, local emergency rooms are morally and financially obligated to treat whomever walks through their doors. “From our point of view, it doesn’t matter if you’re documented or undocumented. A patient to us is a patient to us,” said Rapaport. “Once you come to an emergency department, you have a right to be seen. The way the health-care system is historically set up, hospitals have the obligation to take care of those who cannot take care of themselves, and that’s what we will do.”

Heritage pitcher to play Down Under Hunter Jorgensen, a junior pitcher/outfielder on the Heritage High School varsity baseball team, has accepted an invitation to accompany 15 other student athletes to Australia as a member of the American Eagles baseball club. It’s time to dust off those cleats and join the Delta Youth Soccer League (DYSL) as it continues its TOPSoccer sign-up sessions this weekend. TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team placement program for boys and girls (4 to 19) with mental or physical disabilities, providing them the opportunity to learn and play soccer. Players are drawn from the communities of Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley and Pittsburg.

There is no registration fee for TOPSoccer, and the program imposes no sign-up deadline. Kids may start playing after the season begins on Aug. 15. Sign-ups take place at Dallas Ranch Middle School, 1401 Mount Hamilton Drive in Antioch, on April 3 and 24 and May 1, 8 and 29 – all from 6 to 9 p.m. – and May 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents are asked to bring a copy of their children’s birth certificate. Local fighters win in SF Cameron Enriquez, 19, a Brentwood resident and former Heritage High wrestler, won a three-round decision after nearly tapping out his opponent in the second round of a March 21 fight at the Pankration Event in San Francisco. It was his second fight; in his first, he won by a second-round tapout. It was also an opportunity for Enriquez to show how he would react under pressure, and he rose to the challenge like a seasoned pro. He’ll be fighting in May at the Konocti Harbor casino in his first pro fight gladiator challenge. Charles (CJ) Leveuqe, 23, a Brentwood resident, former Liberty High wrestler and

football player, also won his fight in the main event out of 27 fights that day. Leveuqe’s opponent was about 6 inches taller and outweighed him by 15 pounds. Despite that, Leveuqe took him to the ground and controlled him for the whole first round with superior grappling skills. In the second round, Leveuqe got the takedown by pinning his opponent on the cage and throwing ruthless body shots, which forced his foe to tap out. Also fighting on May’s gladiator challenge card will be Steve Alexander of Antioch, who will also be trying out for Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” show in April. – Contributed by Randy Verrett

Heritage splits Antioch The Heritage boys varsity volleyball team went 1-1 against Antioch teams last week. On March 24 the varsity team lost to Deer Valley 0-3, and the JV team won 2-0. The varsity match was filled with spectacular rallies that got the crowds cheering. The Patriots executed well in some impressive points against the Wolverines, but mental errors proved costly. The JV team is undefeated in league play so far and has demonstrated improvement with each match. The JV strong suit has been consistency. On March 26 the Patriot varsity squad reversed its fortunes and beat Antioch High 3-1 at home. The JV squad continued its winning streak with a 2-1 victory. The varsity game was a lesson in preparation. Antioch had scouted the Heritage game strategy by watching the Patriots play Deer Valley. The match was a close, back-and-forth battle attended by a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters, including the kids who attended the spring volleyball camp held at Heritage. They and their parents and families helped cheer the Patriots on to victory, chanting the Samoan cheers they learned at camp and yelling out coachlike commands such as “move your feet!” The wins gave the varsity a 3-1 league record (5-4 overall) and the JV team a 3-0 record (5-3 overall). – Contributed by Bess Haldi

Liberty grads eye the major leagues by Nate Smith Correspondent

The Liberty High School baseball team has seen its share of success recently, reaching the NCS playoffs in each of the last three seasons. And two recent graduates, Mike Gonzales and Drew Gagnon, are making their way toward every baseball player’s dream: playing in The Show. Gonzales, after playing at Diablo Valley College last year, spent the remainder of the summer with the Gulf Coast League Twins of the rookie league. He appeared in 41 games at first base for the Twins, batting .331 and compiling a .489 slugging percentage. He homered in consecutive games from July 7-9, and batted a strong .353 for the month of July. His success at the rookie league level comes as no surprise to the Twins organization. The team thought highly enough of him to draft him in the ninth round following his only season at DVC. Gagnon is the number-two starter for the Long Beach State Dirtbags, a program boasting four College World Series appearances. Being named a starting pitcher as a freshman for one of the top programs in the country would be an accomplishment by itself, but Gagnon is making the most of the opportunity. Of the Dirtbags’ five wins so far this season, three have come with Gagnon on the mound. His lone loss came in his only

Vigil for slain officers

ourners gathered at Antioch’s City Hall last Friday for a vigil in honor of the four murdered Oakland police ofﬁcers. The event included remarks by an emotional Mayor Jim Davis, a song led by Josie Monahan and comments by the Antioch Crime Prevention Commission. An honor guard was provided by local Scouts in recognition of the fact that all four slain offers were Eagle Scouts.

Esequiel Zuno Ortega Esequiel Zuno Ortega of Brentwood, 64, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family and friends after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Esequiel was born on April 22, 1944 in the town of Santa Clara in Jalisco, Mexico. He worked at the Interpace/ North American Refractories brick factory in Pittsburg for more than 20 years. For the last 10 years, he worked for the City of Brentwood in the Parks and Recreation Department. Esequiel was a longtime member of the Comite Civico Patriotico and Comite Mexicano De Beneficencia. He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, watching futbol Mexicano, day trips to Jackson Rancheria and annual trips to Yosemite. Most of all, he enjoyed being with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Celia (Sally); sons, Carlos (Rosemarie) and Edwardo; grandchildren, Noah and Max; brothers, Juan, Luis and Lupe; and sisters, Rosario, Maria de Jesus and Angelina. Esequiel was preceded in death by his parents, Reyes and Maria de Jesus; brothers, Jose, Ciro and Guadalupe; and sisters, Maria and Josephina. Funeral services were held on March 20 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Brentwood, followed by burial at the Brentwood Union Cemetery.

Bassist and composer Victor Little releases first solo CD In a music career spanning more than 20 years, Victor Little has established himself as the consummate session bassist, laying down the low-end musical foundation on recordings and on stage with Patti Austin, Billy Preston, Angela Bofill, Charlie Musselwhite, Mickey Hart and the legendary Booker T. Jones. Little recently released his first solo CD, “Inner Portrait,” which features 10 original instrumental and hook-laden funky-fusion, rhythm and blues groove-jazz tracks, all of which display the artist’s impeccable timing, taste, technique and tone, sophisticated solo skills and captivating melodies. In the making of “Inner Portrait,” Victor joined forces with Santana, Steely Dan, Parliament/Funkadelic drummer Dennis Chambers, Grammy-Award winning drummer of The Mars Volta, Thomas Pridgen, and the keyboardist Ruslan Sirota of the Stanley Clarke Band. The CD was produced by Victor Little, longtime Santana

Milestones from page 9B OBITUARY Agnes Cecilia Claiborne Former Oakley resident Agnes Cecilia Claiborne, 84, passed away on March 14. She was the beloved mother of Rosaline Fitzgerald, Kenneth Claiborne, Cecilia Paulsen, Natalie Marletto (deceased), Glenna Ranney, Tarma Tribble, Frank Claiborne, Helen Henderson and Honi Skold; devoted grandmother to Glenn-Donald Fitzgerald, Catherine Alling, David, Tom, Scott Claiborne, Katrinna Supa, Christopher and Glenna Marlettol, Amy and Mathew Ranney, Kelly Ranney (deceased), Mark Olin, Billy, Melissa and Jillian Tribble, Nicholas and Warren Claiborne, Jeffrey Henderson, and Carney, Krista and Keely Skold. Agnes was also the much loved mother-in-law of Sandy Fitzgerald, Neil Paulsen, Ellen Claiborne, Michael Marletto, John Ranney, and Bart Skold, and loving sister of Frances Royal of Syracuse, N.Y. and Rosaline Upshaw and brother-in-law

JD of Long Beach. Easily making friends wherever she went and in every town that she lived, Agnes kept those strong, lifelong friendships. Born in Syracuse, N.Y. during the Great Depression, she married Glenn Edgar Claiborne on Aug. 17, 1944, during WWII. They lived in New York, Texas (Glenn’s home state) and Nevada before settling down in Boulder Creek. Agnes gave birth to six children before moving to Boulder Creek in 1958 and three more children were born while living there. All of Agnes’ nine children graduated from San Lorenzo Valley High School in Felton. The aroma of Agnes’ incredible cooking and baked goods for her large family filled the family home and graced many a church and community function. Agnes always found time to bake bread for her family every Sunday. Going to work outside the home as her children grew up, she enjoyed her job as a foodservice employee at San Lorenzo Valley School District and later as a cook at Mount Hermon Christian

Conference Center in Felton. A devoted Catholic all her life, Agnes loved working at Mount Hermon, a place where she could observe her strong Christian faith. The employees she worked with at Mount Hermon were mostly young adults and this kept Agnes young at heart. As a lifelong devoted Catholic, Agnes and her family were active members of St. Michael’s Church in Boulder Creek. Having lived in Boulder Creek for 29 years, Agnes and Glen moved to Oregon in 1987, after Glenn’s retirement. Living in Glendale, Ore. for 17 years, Agnes made strong bonds with her dear friends Rose, Isabelle, Faye and Helen. She kept in close contact even after she moved from Oregon to Oakley in 2004, as she wanted to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Once again, Agnes quickly made many friends and became a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time traveling and visiting her children and grandchildren, being with her extensive family and many friends. From the

early days of her marriage until just recently, Agnes loved and enjoyed the outdoors. She spent time with her family on many camping trips, family reunions and trips around the country to visit her children and grandchildren. She touched many lives with her always cheerful demeanor, contagious smile and humble but loving approach to life. To all of us, Agnes will always be “our little mother” and “Grandma Aggie.” We will love you forever and your memory will last for all eternity. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Glenn Edgar Claiborne, her beautiful daughter Natalie Marletto and sweet baby granddaughter, Kelly Lynn Ranney. Agnes will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her family and friends attened her funeral mass on March 30 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Oakley in the name of Agnes Claiborne. see Milestones page 21B

OBITUARY David M. LaVeau David M. LaVeau, 60, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Knightsen on Feb 23. He was preceded in death by his mom Mary, father Henry (Mickey), and his two brothers Ray and Fred. He is survived by his son Phillip LaVeau (Denise) of Tustin; three nephews, Ray LaVeau of Concord and Paul and Joe LaVeau of Antioch. He leaves many cousins, uncles and friends who will miss him very much. David had many passions in his life. The first was his love of his family and another was cooking. He worked as a chef in many of the local restaurants. Another passion was his love of music. He played with

many local bands in the ’60s and ’70s. Dave was an accomplished drummer, guitarist and songwriter. Last but not least was his passion for football. He was a number-one fan of the St. Louis Rams, and never missed watching or cheering on his favorite team. David attended local schools and graduated from Liberty Union High School.
