8 injured in Oakley crash OAKLEY Eight people were injured — one critically — in a three-vehicle crash on East Cypress Road, west of Bethel Island Road, in Oakley on the morning of Jan. 30, police said. A white Nissan Altima was seen driving eastbound at about 9:45 a.m. on East Cypress Road in the westbound direction, when it collided with a red Dodge Durango and a gray Chevy Tahoe, sending all three vehicles off the roadway, said Officer Steven Soares of the Oakley Police Department. One unidentified victim was flown to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, and seven other unidentified people were transported to various local hospitals by ambulance, said Robert Ruddick, an East Contra Costa Fire Protection District captain. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, based on the amount of damage to the vehicles, but it was not immediately clear if drugs or alcohol were involved, Soares said. The crash shutdown East Cypress Road until about 3 p.m. All inbound (eastbound) traffic to Bethel Island or the Summer Lake community wasforced to use the following route: East Cypress to Jersey Island Road to Dutch Slough Road to Bethel Island Road. All outbound (leaving Bethel Island/Summer Lake Community) traffic was forced to use a land dam/levee at the end of Sandmound Boulevard. To comment, visit www.thepress.net

Police found the victims unresponsive inside an apartment on the 2100 block of Lemon Tree Way at about 8:15 p.m., after a neighbor asked police to check on their neighbor, who had not been heard from in several days. We have just the right amount of equipment that takes care of our current client base and I do worry about my customers. And I like hiring people and giving people jobs, so that’s a big part of me, being able to supply that.” One way Gregory can keep supplying jobs to the area is through Brentwood On Ice, the ice rink Got-A-Party sponsors each December in downtown Brentwood. The rink has become a local tradition each year, attracting visitors from all over the Bay Area. “I will keep the ice rink. This is the first year we covered our recurring costs, so we won’t be selling that,” Gregory said of his rink after its fifth year. Gregory posted sale details on his personal Facebook page and hopes to find a local buyer who will continue to care for his customer base the way he has for 24 years. He said the friendships made through his work are important, and he doesn’t want to leave

Three people were injured, two of them hospitalized, in a three-vehicle crash near Holway Drive and Camino Diablo on the night of Jan. 31 An unidentified blue vehicle on Camino Diablo attempting to go west collided with a sedan also traveling west at about 6:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The sedan then crashed into an unidentified vehicle that was stopped eastbound on Camino Diablo, the CHP said. Discovery Bay resident arrested after stand-off A 38-year-old Discovery Bay man is still in custody after being arrested late last week for alleged negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a firearm, child endangerment and resisting arrest after a three-hour standoff on Jan. 26 in Discovery Bay, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department said. Contra Costa County Sheriff deputies, dispatched on Jan. 26 to a report of a shooting that occurred at a home in the 2300 block of Newport Place South in Discovery Bay at 7:30 p.m., attempted to speak to James West in connection with the shooting, but he refused to cooperate, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department said. West, who barricaded himself inside his residence, unexpectedly opened the garage

door after both negotiators and the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team had unsuccessfully tried to get him to surrender for about three hours. West didn’t comply with commands after opening the garage but was taken into custody early Jan. 27, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department said. As of Feb. 2, he is still in custody. West was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a firearm, child endangerment and resisting arrest. Contra Costa County Sheriff deputies confirmed that a shooting took place prior to their arrival at the home but did not release any further details. You have a Revocable Living Trust (“Trust”) and it is properly funded. You did everything you were supposed to do, and you are organized. But have you talked to your Successor Trustee about your Trust? Does your Successor Trustee know what they will need to do once you and your spouse die? Here is a list of some things that you should discuss with your Successor Trustee regarding their role in administering your trust: 1) Where are your estate planning documents stored? Your Successor Trustee needs to know where your original estate planning documents are stored (copies are not sufficient). If your original documents are stored in a home safe or safety deposit box, make sure your Successor Trustee has access. 2) What are your Trust Assets? What are your Non-Trust Assets? Talk with your Successor Trustee about your assets. Explain to them which assets are held in your Trust and which assets are not in your Trust. After you pass away, your Successor Trustee will need to secure all of your assets and should also create a spreadsheet outlining your assets and their value. 3) Obtain a taxpayer identification number and file tax returns After you and your spouse die, your Successor Trustee will need to obtain a tax identification number from the IRS. This identification number can be obtained online. However, it is highly recommended that your Successor
Trustee meet with a CPA or attorney to complete the application to ensure it is completed correctly. After you pass away, your Successor Trustee will also need to file your final income tax return and may need to file a fiduciary tax return. 4) Notify Your Beneficiaries California Probate Code Section 16061.7 requires the Successor Trustee to send a notice to all beneficiaries and potential heirs. 5) Distribute Assets Once your creditors and other liabilities have been paid, your Successor Trustee will be responsible for distributing your assets. If you own property, your Successor Trustee must prepare additional documentation to be submitted to the Recorder’s Office and County Assessor’s Office. Your Successor Trustee should consult with an attorney to ensure that the documents are prepared and recorded properly. Disclaimer: This list does not include everything that your Successor Trustee will be required to do to administer your trust and estate. This list is intended only to help you start the conversation with your Successor Trustee as to their role once you and your spouse pass away. Public discussion on 0.5% county sales tax measure set for Feb. 17 A virtual public discussion on Measure X, a county-wide sales tax approved in 2020 to support health and human services for residents, will be held on Zoom on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. The 0.5 percent sales tax is expected to generate $81 million per year for 20 years. The tax money is being collected and decisions are being made on how to allocate the money, according to a news release from the nonprofit League of Women Voters of Diablo Valley and of West Contra Costa County, which is hosting the talk. On the heels of the measure’s passage, the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors established the Measure X Advisory Committee to help prioritize spending of Measure X dollars to support health and human services in Contra Costa County, according to the news release. Questions expected to be raised during the discussion include: • what was recommended by the Advisory Committee? • what was funded, and what are
the gaps still remaining? • do these allocations support residents’ values? • what can be learned from this first year of sales tax allocations? • what does it mean for the future? The panel will be moderated by Shanelle Scales-Preston, vice mayor and Pittsburg City Council member. Panelists are Mariana Moore, chair of the Measure X Citizens Advisory Board; Dan Geiger from the Budget Justice Coalition; and Supervisor Karen Mitchoff, Contra Costa Board of Supervisors District 4. household income is also up and mortgage rates are down. So even though home prices are way up, the mortgage payment for the median home is actually LOWER than 2006 as a percentage of income. It’s at about 21%. So one could argue that homes are actually more “affordable” right now than in 2006 on a national basis. Mortgage rates haven risen recently, but we are a long way from the 6-7% rates we saw in the past. And while our local real estate prices are much higher than the national numbers given above, our median income is also much higher. I’m not saying that our prices can’t or won’t fall. But when you look at the numbers behind affordability right now, they aren’t as scary as you would think. If you have questions about real estate, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Real estate prices are up, way up, from just a few years ago. I’m hearing people wonder if we are in another housing “bubble” that is about to pop. One of the key factors to track is how “affordable” houses are. One way to measure “affordability” is a function of household income, home prices and mortgage rates. With those three factors, you can figure out what the average monthly payment for the average household and then calculate what percentage that is of their monthly household income. At the peak of the 2006 housing bubble, the median national home price was about $230K and mortgage rates were about 6.75%. With a 20% down payment, that works out to about $1,200 per month, which was about 30% of the monthly household income at that time. The median national home price right now stands at a little over $350K, which is 52% more than the peak of 2006. However,

Letters Republicans shouldn’t be anti-vaccines
to the
Editor: Republicans across this country, from local school board races all the way to possible presidential candidates and the halls of Congress, are almost all, in one shape or another, fighting the common sense solution out of this pandemic: vaccinations. For those of you who support those Republicans or are fighting against the vaccines, I don’t get it. Where’s your disconnect? Is it because you don’t trust vaccines? You’re already vaccinated against a host of other diseases. What’s wrong with those? Is it Fox News spreading conspiracy theories and one failed “miracle cure” after another? You’ll readily consume ineffective horse dewormer, but refuse proven vaccines? That makes no sense. Is it because Trump told you it was a hoax or wasn’t all that bad? After 870,000 Americans have died, do you STILL believe this? That’s 290 times the number of deaths from Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, by the way. We’re currently averaging
Editor
2,300 Covid-19 deaths every day. That’s an average of one American death every 37 seconds. By the time you finish reading this, four of your countrymen will have died. Is this about “owning the libs”? Don’t you realize the vast majority of those new daily deaths are Republicans or others who refuse to vaccinate? Is this about your “freedom”? What about MY freedom? What about the freedom of all those children you’re trying to force into unsafe schools? What about the freedoms of their families? Their teachers? What about my parents who are older than 80 who can’t enjoy their remaining years because you don’t want to get vaccinated and help end this pandemic? What about THEIR freedom? I swear, any talk about how you’re a patriot who loves this country has lost all its meaning. You don’t love this country. You love yourself and care only about your own freedoms. The patriots who gave us our freedom did so through sacrifice and unselfishness. Can you not even suffer a simple pinprick for America’s freedoms now? Art Main Brentwood

Brentwood resident slices through the competition by Aliyah Ramirez Correspondent
After many years of perfecting his craft as a bladesmith, Brentwood resident Robert Taylor decided to compete on the show Forged In Fire on the History channel to see if he had what it takes to win. Taylor won the American reality competition show that showcases bladesmiths who test their skills in a series of challenges, competing for a $10,000 reward and title of Forged In Fire champion. Taylor appeared on season 8, episode 37, Damascus 500, which aired last Dec. 22, when he competed against three other contestants in molding blades, forming sturdy handles, and constructing a sword previously used in history, taking most bladesmiths out of their comfort zones. “Winning the show was great, It’s kinda weird being like a semi-celebrity,” Taylor said. “I just started making blades, Blue Night Knives, and I am just going to retire and make knives.”. From working in family construction for 20 years to transitioning into law enforcement, making blades has been a hobby for Taylor as an escape from his daily work schedule.

Brentwood resident Robert Taylor recently won the American reality competition show Forged in Fire. “Doing 15 years in the sheriff’s department now and I was like, ‘I want to get back to doing something with my hands,’ so I took up bladesmithing,” said Taylor.
Taylor said he enjoyed the whole show experience. “They showed us the sword we were supposed to build from history, which was a Mesopotamian sickle sword. It’s actually a Bronze- age weapon. So they showed us the sword and gave us a sheet of parameters we are supposed to meet,” said Taylor. Before securing a spot on the show, Taylor had to endure a six-month selection process before he was chosen. Background checks and various interviews determined which bladesmiths were eligible. In addition to the challenges of building a blade, heat came into play, Taylor said. “The sets are always super hot,” he said. “On the first round they actually shut us down for an hour, they didn’t show it because it got too hot. It was 100 degrees outside and 130 degrees in the forge..” Despite long hours and hot temperatures, Taylor endured while competing, and he came out victorious as his blades passed each challenge. Since his victory on the show, Taylor said many opportunities have opened up for his career, such as invitations to the Texas blade show, increased sales in his new business, Blue Night Knives, in Brentwood; and possibility to compete in the future championship round of Forged In Fire soon to come.

Falcons’ roller-coaster season nears end by Michael Dixon Correspondent
Freedom High School’s girls basketball coach Richelle Najera says that the Falcons have experienced some ups and downs thus far this season. The record indeed suggests that there have been some peaks and valleys. Through play on Friday, Jan. 28, Freedom sits at 9-7. But if the Falcons’ season has been a roller coaster, the most recent game was the best part -- at least to date. Freedom defeated Heritage 45-41. Not only were the Patriots the defending league champions, but they had not lost to a Bay Valley Athletic League opponent since February of 2016, more than two years before the current seniors at the schools began their freshmen years. “It was definitely our best game to date - the girls played impeccable defense,” Najera said. “This game had a lot of highs and lows but they worked through those tough moments to bring home the W.” What was particularly interesting about the win against Heritage is that it came less than a week after arguably the lowest point of the season. After playing Cosumnes Oaks on Dec. 30, the Falcons, like many teams in the BVAL, went on a break. Freedom next took the court on Jan. 17 with a home game against Mt. Diablo and lost 59-36. The following game was even worse for the Falcons, who fell 62-24 at Piedmont on Jan. 22, in their final game before BVAL play began. “They were definitely games that put us through the wringer,” Najera said. “The Freedom team that played those

The Freedom girls basketball team celebrates at the conclusion of a 45-41 victory over Heritage on Jan. 28. games was not one I recognized. But sometimes you need to experience losses like those -- and it’s how you bounce back that matters. I’m not sure what exactly they did but they came together as a team and bounced back stronger after those back-to-back losses.” Indeed, they did. The Falcons defeated Antioch 59-40 in the league opener before upsetting Heritage. Balance is key to Freedom’s success. Three Falcons are averaging more than 10
points per game. Senior guards Varonica Gordon and Alayah Flucus are the top scorers, averaging 14.8 and 13.8 points per game, respectively while freshman guard Eve Monzon is averaging 11.1. The defense has also been important. Gordon and Flucus lead the team in steals per game, as well, with 1.7 and 1.1 with sophomore guard Mariska Perkins third on the team with a steal a game. Najera also singled out the play of senior guard and sparkplug Raylin Robinson.
“She has been our fire starter,” Najera said of Robinson. “She is undoubtedly one of the hardest working individuals on this team. She is unselfish and will do the little things that make the biggest difference.” The Falcons have two more regular season games, which are both on the road. They’ll be at Pittsburg for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Feb. 4 and will finish the regular season at Deer Valley with a 5:30 p.m. game on Monday, Feb. 7. After that, the league tournament will take place, with the winner of that receiving an automatic bid into the North Coast Section Tournament. “Every team’s goal is to win it all,” Najera said. “I want to finish the season strong. As an individual, our next game is not guaranteed. We need to play every possession like it’s all on the line.” Beyond whatever wins and losses may come for the rest of the season, Najera hopes that the memories the team makes will last well beyond the season. “I want them to have life-long friendships with each other,” Najera said. “I hope to see them sitting in the stands together six years down the road laughing with each other. When all is said and done all that matters to me is that these girls had fun playing the game with one another.” “This team is special,” the coach added. “As cliché as it may sound, the group of girls have completely bought into what we’re trying to do and the bond they have with each other is amazing. This isn’t just a bunch of teammates, they are family.” To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia/slideshows
Heritage’s Amanda Muse stands above the competition Highly-recruited junior lists final 6 colleges by Michael Dixon Correspondent
Anyone taking in a Heritage girls basketball game over the next two years will be watching a highly-sought recruit. At 6-foot-4, Amanda Muse literally stands above everyone with whom she shares a court. And while the Patriots are far from a one-player team, her game follows suit. She’s averaging 16.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.1 blocked shots per game. While just a junior, Muse is already a highly sought recruit for the class of 2023. In a tweet from Oct. 24 and still pinned to the top of her Twitter page, Muse has listed her final six colleges. Oregon State, Duke, Wash-
ington, and UCLA join 2018 national champion Notre Dame, who’s currently ranked No. 20 and defending national champion and current No. 2 team in the country, Stanford. On Jan. 22, Muse and the Patriots took on Carondelet in the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase. While Heritage was defeated 79-60, Muse was named as the event’s most valuable player. She scored 27 points against the Cougars while pulling in 7 rebounds. Additionally, while she plays primarily in the low post, Muse also attempted three three-point shots against Cardondelet, making two and is 4-for-9 on the season from threepoint range. Muse and the Patriots will be in action twice more during the regular season. They’ll be at Deer Valley on Friday, Feb. 4 and home against Liberty on Monday, Feb. 7. After that will be the Bay Valley Athletic League Tournament and most likely the North Coast Section Tournament, with dates, times, locations and opponents to be announced at a later date.

Two charged in Oakley shooting Two East County residents have been charged in connection with a shooting on Laurel Road near Laurel Ballfields in mid-January. Saul Velasco, 19, of Oakley and Marius Smith, 18, of Brentwood, are charged with attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle and assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly shooting an unidentified person on Jan. 14. Both suspects remain in custody, Oakley police said. The suspects, both in a moving vehicle, allegedly shot the victim, an occupant in a separate moving vehicle, on Laurel Road near Laurel Ballfields. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Oakley police broadcasted an unidentified suspect vehicle to neighboring law enforcement agencies immediately after the incident, and Contra Costa County sheriff deputies pulled over the suspected vehicle a short time later on Vasco Road near Camino Diablo. Both suspects in the pulled-over vehicle were detained and subsequently arrested in connection with the shooting after being identified by Oakley officers, authorities said. “In the wake of this investigation, Oakley Police Detectives and evidence technicians executed search warrants for the purpose of enhancing what we already knew and matching any possible evidence to statements that were made to us,” Oakley police said in a statement. “Enough evidence was discovered to substantiate the statements, and it allowed us to present a credible case to the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office.”

GAMES & PUZZLES Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The undersigned or its predecessor caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the
highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 097434-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 097434-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. the center, the city had looked into the former location of the Los Medanos College Brentwood Center in the shopping center on Sand Creek Road as a possible location. However, it was determined that the building did not have high enough ceilings, which would reduce “recreational opportunities,” such as basketball and rock climbing, at a youth center, according to Ogden. The new location for the project, 400 Guthrie Lane, was recommended to the City Council by Ogden and Director of Parks and Recreation Bruce Mulder during the Jan. 25 meeting. The potential location would be in the old CD building next to the police station. The youth center would be one of several projects the city of Brentwood would undertake if its request for Measure X funds were to be approved. Measure X was a county-wide 0.5% sales tax approved by voters in 2020

to pay for health and human services in Contra Costa County. Those funds are set to include, among other services, two youth centers in the county, according to Ogden. Measure X is expected to generate $81 million per year for 20 years, according to the measure. “We are pursuing the Contra Costa County Measure X funds in the amount of $5M and nearly $2M annually in ongoing revenues to develop the youth center,” said Ogden in an email. “We expect to know in the coming months if we will be considered for the funds, and if so, begin developing the project out, including upgrades to the facility. It is too early to tell, but it will likely be a 2023 opening.” Proposed amenities included in the potential youth center would cover a variety of both academic and recreational activities. These areas of interest were determined based upon a survey sent out to Brentwood youth and parents in July 2021, according to Ogden. The roughly

Due to the reliance on Measure X funds to finance the development of the youth center, its future will be determined by whether or not it is selected as one of the projects to receive the money. Measure X requests are vetted by an advisory board established by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors. “The project could cost $2M or more, and won’t be known until a full assessment is done of the facility upgrades needed, and programmatic development,” said Ogden in the email. “Only Measure X (money) is being considered, and if not awarded, the project will not proceed at this time.”

The wedding industry adapts to COVID-19 DAWNMARIE FEHR
T
The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged wedding venues, but many are optimistic about the future.
he wedding industry has pivoted and reimagined itself countless times since March
of 2020 and will continue to do so through the 2022 wedding season. Though the past two years have slowed business down considerably, those in the industry predict that this year is shaping up to be a busy one for weddings of all types, especially outdoors. Barbara DuMont, manager of event venue Brownstone Gardens in Oakley, said the key will be flexibility. “Last year at this time, we were getting a little nervous about our April and May weddings, and we actually had to reschedule some of them,” said DuMont. “I don’t anticipate that this year. San Francisco is already lifting some restrictions, so are other cities, so I think in April we should be OK. I’m anticipating a great year. 2023 is already starting to book, because people want to get married and want to have weddings and we have to learn to work around the COVID, because it’s not going away.” DuMont said the changes Brownstone made revolve around state and local health mandates and extra cleaning procedures

to keep staff and guests safe. Beyond that, DuMont said choices are being left to the bride and groom. “I’ve had weddings where the wedding party doesn’t care, I’ve had weddings where they are doing temp checks at the door,” said DuMont. “Things change, and if we get back into social distancing, then I have to do that, but the bride and groom are setting the tone. Some are asking for more precautions than the restrictions from the county, and those restrictions change on a weekly basis.” Since Brownstone Gardens venue is completely outdoors, it has had an easier time than indoor venues. The Ryde Hotel event venue in Walnut Grove has two indoor and one outdoor wedding sites on its grounds and saw a big dent in their revenue when indoor
venues were closed. “When everything happened and COVID came about, our whole life was just a sad story, because there was no income, no revenue, and I never in my life thought that I would experience anything like this,” said manager Tina Flores. “When I meet with the brides or people planning an event, every event is my event, my dream, and we had been planning some events since 2018. So every time I had to cancel a wedding, it was like I was cancelling my own wedding. It was horrible.” Ryde had its own set of struggles during the past two years. Being a seasonal venue made obtaining federal aid difficult, and the hotel barely managed to pull through. They are now booking weddings for 2022 and look forward to serving wedding couples on
their grounds. “We are booking weddings now and we are having conversations I never thought about having before,” said Flores. “In the past, we talked about how many guests there would be, decorations, colors, food, and now you add in ‘what if we get shut down?’ and we talk about the need for spacing, the need for face coverings, and I always make sure they understand these are the government restrictions right now, and I don’t know what the restrictions will be tomorrow. It may be less or it may be more. I want them to fully understand the possibility we could be facing another shutdown.” As the 2022 wedding season gains momentum, DuMont said trends have taken a back seat to simply having a wedding this year. “Everyone asks ‘what’s the color of the year?’, and I’m seeing the same colors I did last year,” she said. “Dusty rose was over the top last year. I’m not seeing big changes other than they want to have a good time and they are over the COVID thing. They want to have their wedding and have it be something special and celebrate with friends and family.” Brownstone Gardens is open April through mid-November. New shop offers vintage dresses DAWNMARIE FEHR
B
rides everywhere hope to say “yes” to the dress of their dreams for the big day. A shop in Oakley is offering a variety of
vintage dresses with something for everyone.
Catch a Vintage Dream is on the second floor of the Rancho Co-Op in Oakley. There, owner Robin Lester-Gaines has curated a selection of wedding and prom dresses from the 1920s all the way through the 1990s. Lester-Gaines said no two dresses in the store are the same. “All the dresses are all different, from short dresses to long dresses to 10-foot trains. I never have the same dress twice, so you won’t see yourself coming and going, and the dresses are really affordable.” Besides dresses, Catch a Vintage Dream offers veils, jewelry, gloves, shoes, bags, furs and every other accessory a girl could want. While Lester-Gaines said she does a have a few modern pieces, the majority of her inventory is vintage, a look growing more popular every year. “Vintage is really in,” she said. “Gwen Stefani, when she recently got married, wore a vintage wedding gown, and Rachel Zoe wore a vintage wedding gown, and Kate Hudson is going to, so it’s something that is becoming normal. We have the ‘50s, we have the ‘30s, we have some really cool stuff. And your look will be one-of-a-kind from my shop.” Lester-Gaines dreamed of owning a bridal shop from the time she was 20 years old. After having her own wedding in the dress of her dreams, she said she wanted to help other people have that, as well. As with many dreams, life got in the way. But now, more than four decades later,
she has found the time and is pursuing her passion. Catch a Vintage Dream opened last May as a way for Lester-Gaines to help girls from Liberty High School with small budgets find prom dresses. Lani Maloney worked with Lester-Gaines to gather dresses and get them to girls in need to wear to the unofficial prom Liberty parents put together last spring. “Robin jumped in and said she could help with gowns and accessories and purses and things like that, and it was just wonderful,” said Maloney, who noted 50 dresses were donated. “I know she kept the gowns left over from last year and will continue the tradition of the free, donated dresses . . . she is a wonderful gal and just wanted to jump in and help the community.” The project went so well, Lester-Gaines began gathering wedding dresses and opened her shop. This year, she will work with all three local high schools to help girls in need find a beautiful prom dress. “My thought was we could work with the high school and the kids who didn’t have money to go out and get a prom dress, but could probably afford to come into us,” Lester-Gaines said. “We gave away dresses and helped with purses and shoes, and it was really fun. The girls would come in with their moms and sit and drink Martinelli’s apple juice and have a great time. It was so fun and the girls were so grateful.” Lester-Gaines shares her space with Norma Equinoa and her shop, Rosebud. Both share a love of vintage fashion and Equinoa said their combined selections offer East County a special selection of clothing and accessories. “Robin and I met a little while ago and found we had a lot of common interests, but the majority of it was clothes and purses and things like that,” said Equinoa. “I think her shop is excellent. She has a good combination of vintage

It’s very unique.” Equinoa said with the advent of internet shopping, bridal shops began to wane away, but there will always be people who want to touch, feel and try before purchasing. Catch a Vintage Dream caters to them, and the boutique offers a feast for the senses with yards of tulle, satin and fur to satisfy every wedding dream. “Others have told me it’s really comfortable and they like the shop and they are delighted something like that exists here,” said Lester-Gaines. “They always say, ‘I’ll bring my mother, I’ll bring my daughter,’ and they do. A lot of young girls come in and are really fascinated by what they see. We have a lot of fun here.” Catch a Vintage Dream is located at 5685 Main St. in Oakley. The size of the wedding party also bears consideration when planning a wedding day timeline. Large parties will require more time to get ready, and that should be factored into couples’ timelines. Large parties also may be harder to corral and transport from place to place, so couples should build some extra time into their timelines to account for that. Small wedding parties can be easier to manage, so couples with small parties may be able to begin their timelines a little later in the day than those with large wedding parties.
none more so than on a couple’s wedding day. Many couples spend months, if not years, planning their weddings in the hopes that all that hard work will ultimately result in a day they will cherish forever. The sheer volume of things to do on a wedding day can make couples feel overwhelmed. Those feelings can be overcome by emphasizing timing on the day of the wedding. Couples can access wedding day timeline templates on various websites. But couples should remember that their weddings are unique, so online guidelines might not be realistic. A careful consideration of a handful of variables specific to couples’ weddings can help them craft timelines that make their big day go smoothly.

Weather is the most unpredictable variable couples need to plan for on their wedding days. As the wedding day approaches, couples can monitor the day’s forecast and then make any necessary changes to account for inclement weather. Dress it up
Brides need not eschew white if they prefer to wear it for their second weddings. White, cream, ivory, or other shades are acceptable. Also, brides can make their gowns as lavish or as simplistic as they desire. The length and style of the dress should reflect the formality and scope of the event.
Make it unique
Couples who have been married before may want to set this new occasion apart from their previous weddings. Brides magazine experts suggest discussing previous celebrations and what can be done differently this time around. Couples can use this opportunity to get to know each other more intimately by personalizing their festivities.

Social from page 5B hired to document the happy couple’s big day from start to finish. Social media boards are digital screens that display social media walls. Live event social media boards collect content from social media channels and display it on a single digital screen. Users, in this case a couple’s guests, simply use a predetermined hashtag when posting photos and the images are then displayed on digital screens in real time. This can be a fun way to engage guests during the reception. ♦ Live stream the wedding Live streams became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, when couples getting married had to pare down their guest lists to adhere to social distancing guidelines. But live streams can continue to be used after the pandemic, as there will always be guests who can’t make it to the wedding. Facebook Live has been a go-to social media platform for live streaming weddings during the pandemic, and it can be used to involve loved ones in the festivities even if they can’t be there in person. Live streaming via social media may be especially useful
similar the second time around, but additional documents, such as a divorce decree or death certificate, may be necessary. These legal documents also will be needed for men and women who intend to change their last names after getting married.
for couples who want to enjoy destination weddings, which tend to be small affairs due to travel constraints. ♦ Hashtag the wedding A couple-specific hashtag can serve as something akin to a wedding album, only it’s one everyone can easily access via the couple’s chosen social media platform. Encourage guests to hashtag photos from the wedding so everyone can have a good time looking back on the ceremony and reception once the day has come and gone. ♦ Plan with your party Social media can be as fun, inclusive and useful when planning the wedding as it can during the wedding itself. Brides and grooms can create their own private Pinterest boards and share them with the wedding party. Everyone can then use the private board to bounce ideas off each other. Couples can infuse a little fun into the Pinterest board by encouraging their groomsmen and bridesmaids to post outrageous outfit ideas or submit sing-along song requests to be played during the reception.

Alternatives to diamond engagement rings Money magazine reports
the average engagement ring costs about $5,800. An engagement ring symbolizes the start of a lifelong commitment and may even set the tone for a couple’s wedding day. Jewelry styles are personal, and grooms-to-be should carefully research their significant others’ preferences in terms of precious metals, colors and gemstones. Even though tradition holds that a diamond gemstone is classic for engagement rings, these precious stones are not the only options. In fact, before World War II, just 10 percent of proposals involved diamond engagement rings. That number jumped to 80 percent by 1990. However, many modern couples lean toward other offerings not only for their uniqueness, but also to save money. Couples have many beautiful alternatives to diamonds that they can explore when shopping for engagement rings. Those seeking something unique can embrace these engagement ring options.
Amethyst
This vibrant, lavender-hued stone can be breathtaking when cut the correct way. Purple shades have long been associated with royalty, making an amethyst fitting for such an occasion as special as an engagement. Because amethysts, which are less expensive than diamonds, are a seven on the Mohs scale for gemstone hardness, they can be durable.
Knot rings
These rings do not have a center stone. Rather, they’re designed to be a tied knot or infinity symbol. These rings can be particularly sentimental as they represent true, unbroken love.
Opal
Gemstones, like flowers, have been assigned certain meanings. Tying the engagement ring to one of them can infuse more symbolism into the relationship. Opal, for example, represents love, passion, creativity, spontaneity, and inspiration. Those traits seem tailor-made for surprise proposals.
Sapphire
While sapphire stones often are blue, they can also be yellow, green, pink, and white. Sapphires are the thirdhardest mineral. A white sapphire can be the perfect diamond replacement

Bride & Guest Registration
Red is the definitive color of love. A Valentine’s Day proposal can be made even more special by presenting an engagement ring with a red gemstone.
