BRENTWOOD Liberty Union High School District leaders have decided no disciplinary action will be taken against unmasked students, effective immediately. The vote came hours after the state announced masks will no longer be required in schools, only strongly encouraged, starting March 12, according to new state guidance. The board cast its 3 to 2 vote – with trustees Yolanda Pena-Mendrek and Pauline Allred voting against – in front of a packed house after listening to two hours of letters and public comments both for and against masking policies. Parents, students and staff spoke passionately, though most comments were in favor of making masks optional. As of March 12, the California Department of Public Health says masks will not be required for

he KlaasKids Foundation joined search efforts for missing Oakley woman Alexis Gabe last weekend. Search training for volunteers was held at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds. As of press time, Oakley City Manager Josh McMurray said there was no new information in the case to report. The KlaasKids Foundation, run by Marc Klaas and based in Sausalito, assists with missing person cases nationwide through a network of volunteers who organize and conduct searches while also providing training to other search-and-rescue volunteers. The organization was formed by Marc Klaas in the aftermath of the high-profile kidnapping death of his daughter, Polly Klaas, in 1993. Residents are upset over housing plans by Melissa van Ruiten Staff Writer

BRENTWOOD Brentwood residents are concerned that a proposed mixedincome community in Brentwood will lead to increased crime and decreased home values. The potential housing project could be built at the intersection of Lone Tree Way and O’Hara Avenue. Developer Eden Housing, in cooperation with the Episcopal Diocese of California, held its first community meeting on the project in mid-February. Project leaders are still in the beginning phases with the City of Brentwood. In August 2021, Eden Housing filed a conceptual pre-appli-

cation with the city, and after receiving community feedback, plans to submit a formal application to the city’s planning department in spring 2022. Once the formal application is submitted, it will allow the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) study to take place. “CEQA is intended to inform government decision-makers and the public about the potential environmental effects of proposed activities and to prevent significant, avoidable environmental damage,” says the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research website. One concern that the CEQA study will address is the impact higher-density housing will have on traffic in the area. see Plans page 14A

BRENTWOOD A Brentwood woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Brentwood police officer Ryan Rezentes in connection with an incident on Feb. 10, 2020 in which Rezentes sicced his police dog on her during an alleged shoplifting incident, causing the woman’s scalp to be partially torn from her head. The department had initially written in a Facebook post about the arrest of then-24-year-old Talmika Bates, along with three other suspects, in connection with a shoplifting incident at Ulta Beauty Supply in the Streets of Brentwood shopping center earlier that day. The post alleged that the group had exited the store with roughly $10,000 in merchandise before fleeing the scene in a Nissan Murano and subsequently being apprehended in a neighborhood near Slatten Ranch Road. The post makes no mention of the injuries suffered by Bates. Bates is seeking unspecified damages, including loss of wages and both medical and legal expenses in the civil lawsuit. The city of Brentwood declined comment “with litigation underway,” according to City Manager Tim Ogden. “Police located [Bates] hiding in a field behind a set of bushes,” the lawsuit alleges in its retelling of the incident. “In violation of his training and the law, Officer Ryan Rezentes inexplicably sicc’d ‘Marco’ on the unsuspecting and unarmed young lady without providsee Sued page 14A

Police sergeants promoted to lieutenant OAKLEY Two longtime Oakley police sergeants are being promoted to lieutenant. Robert Roberts and Logan Cartwright will be administrators of the Operations and Support Services divisions, respectively, the city announced in a news release. The pair will start their new positions on March 13. “Lieutenants Roberts and Cartwright fill voids that have been left vacant for a period of time, and their presence as division commanders is greatly needed,” the city said in a statement. Roberts started his career in 1995, when he went to work for the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office, which previously had a police services contract with Oakley. He worked in the detention and patrol divisions for the sheriff’s office and

has also served as a police canine handler and canine unit manager. He remained with the Oakley Police Department when it became a standalone department in 2016, working as a patrol and investigations sergeant. Cartwright, a lifelong Oakley resident, started his career in 2002 with the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office, also working in the detention and patrol divisions. He transferred to the Oakley Police Department when it was under a contract agreement with the sheriff’s office. Like Roberts, Cartwright stayed with the Oakley Police Department when it became a separate department, and he was promoted to sergeant in 2017. A traffic enforcement expert, he has also worked patrol and investigations for the Oakley department.

Oakley police sergeants Robert Roberts, left, and Logan Cartwright will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant on March 13.

Suspect hospitalized after vehicle chase and crash through Antioch by Jake Menez Staff Writer

ANTIOCH A high-speed chase through Antioch ended abruptly when the fleeing vehicle collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Hillcrest Avenue and Laurel Road, injuring the occupants of both vehicles. Shortly after midnight on March 1, Antioch police located a vehicle on the 4000 block of Lone Tree Way that was “related” to an armed robbery and carjacking in Cupertino, a police press release states. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Anthony Valdez Jr., 22, initially complied with orders during the traffic stop before fleeing the scene with police in pursuit. The chase ended when the vehicle driven by Valdez struck another vehicle in the intersection, resulting in injuries to both parties.

Valdez sustained “non-life-threatening major injuries,” according to the report and was treated at the scene by medical personnel while his passenger, Kiara Vasquez, 22, was described as having minor injuries. Both were transported to an unspecified hospital. The driver of the other vehicle, an unidentified 58-year-old Sacramento man, was also transported to an unspecified hospital for minor injuries, police said. According to the press release, the Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Office was notified and dispatched to “continue their portion of the investigation” while the California Highway Patrol began an investigation into the collision. It is standard procedure for the CHP to investigate collisions that are part of police chases. Further information, such as Valdez’s city of residence, was not made available because the investigation is ongoing.

An equipment fire An equipment malfunction sparked a small fire at the G3 Enterprises Mineral Division on Camino Diablo in Byron on Monday, Feb. 28. When crews arrived on scene shortly before 10:30 p.m., they found a company employee had already put out most of the fire. After investigation of the burned area, the cause was determined to be an equipment malfunction that caused a conveyor belt to combust due to excessive friction, fire officials said. Operations at the sand plant were shut down for an unspecified amount of time, but no employees or fire personnel were injured. Brentwood theater could reopen in late 2022 Building will be modernized, but keep the ‘retro’ feel by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

The CineLux Delta Cinema Saver in downtown Brentwood could reopen by the end of this year. The building housing the theater was purchased in 2020 by Sean McCauley and his partner, Ron Harrison. The theater had already been shut down by the pandemic, and McCauley began to renovate and revive the theater. “We have finished renovating the top floor, and are now moving down to the bottom floor,” McCauley said. “Back when I was a kid, that theater looked a lot different, so I’m trying to bring it back to the way it looked historically. We are taking out the glass front they installed in the ‘90s and will put in the boxes with lights on each side. We are trying to put it back the way it was.” Built in the 1930s, the theater needed updating in many areas, including concessions and bathrooms, owners said. It’s been operated by CineLux Theatres since 2000, and CineLux President Paul Gunsky said patrons will be in for a pleasant surprise when the film starts rolling again.

Press file photo

Brentwood resident Sean McCauley purchased the CineLux Delta Cinema Saver building in Brentwood and is remodeling. It could reopen late this year. “It’s been really refreshing to work with Sean and his team because when they acquired the building from the former owners, Sean came in with quite a vision,” Gunsky said. “When you go into a building built in the late ‘30s, it’s quite a challenge to make improvements to such a structure, and from Day 1, Sean came in and had a vision that he wanted it to return to the grandeur it had back in the day. We are excited to be a part of this and see the

theater transform into what it was before. Guests will come in and experience, basically, a new theater.” In addition to transforming the entrance into a grander experience, McCauley is installing luxury reclining seats, new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant bathrooms, a new concessions stand with beer and wine, and an online reservation system. “The seats will be ultra comfortable and what today’s movie-going audiences

have come to expect, so that will be significant,” Gunsky said. “You will sit in very comfortable recliners watching the best films Hollywood has to offer. From the moment you walk in, it will be a new experience.” McCauley – who also owns local olive orchards, McCauley Olive Oil, McCauley Estate Vineyards, and McCauley Agriculture and Pest Control – said he wanted to invest in downtown Brentwood because he has always believed in its ability to draw East County residents. “This building is the most iconic downtown building there is in Brentwood that has not been rehabbed the way it should be in over 100 years,” McCauley said, noting the building is an anchor in the downtown area. “It’s a win for Brentwood to bring that theater back to life and modernize it, but keep the retro feel.” McCauley said updating the theater will galvanize the final piece downtown Brentwood needs, giving it even more draw as the epicenter of Brentwood entertainment, despite competition from new malls like The Streets of Brentwood. “We have seen a huge uptick in the downtown traffic, not just on the weekends, but during the week, and it feels like unless that theater gets an upgrade – reclining seats, beer and wine and the bathroom – the momentum will stop,” McCauley said. “I think this is an important part of keeping things going for downtown Brentwood.”

After all we’ve been through the past two years, a return to normalcy is finally within our sights. What a perfect time to commit to a fitter and healthier life. A life that includes a return to social gatherings and friendly sports’ competition.

It is very important that everyone has a Health Care Directive and has a working knowledge of how they operate. So here we go! A Health Care Directive allows you to decide (1) who will make health care decisions on your behalf if you are unable (2) allows you to give specific instructions about any aspect of your health care and (3) to express your intention to donate organs and tissues following your death. In addition to the Health Care Directive, there are 3 other Advance Directives which you may want to consider. They are: A Living Will is a directive that takes effect when a patient is terminally ill. POLST- is a Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment which is prepared by you and your physician usually when a person has been diagnosed with a chronic illness. DNR- is a Do Not Resuscitate Order which is done by you and a physician. If you currently do not have a Healthcare Directive or you need to update yours, you should be able to obtain one from your healthcare provider or you can go to my website and download one. My website is Grimesesp.com. No specific form is required. Cedar Sinai Healthcare also has many different types of Directives based on religious or cultural affiliations. https://www.cedars-sinai. org/programs/healthcare-ethics/advancedirectives When you are completing your Healthcare Directive, be sure to include: Full Name of the Healthcare Agent and

current phones. If your agents have more than one phone number, put them ALL. Have multiple alternate Healthcare Agents. Everyone needs a backup or two or three. If you want some specific treatment, write it down. If you want to stay in your home, write it down!! If you want your ashes scattered in a specific place, write it down!! Either have the Healthcare Directive Notarized or have it witnessed by two qualified witnesses. Make several copies of the Directive. Give copies to your Healthcare Agents and your physician. Remember, Healthcare Agents are not mind readers. We have to tell them what we want. If you do not have a Healthcare Directive, you will still receive medical care. However, if you have a Healthcare Directive, your wishes will be known and there will be a greater chance for you to receive the care and treatment that you wanted. In conclusion, everyone over the age of 18 should have a Healthcare Directive. If you have a Healthcare Directive, check it at least once a year to make sure is up to date. If you have questions about your Healthcare Directive or any other Estate Planning issues, I offer a FREE 30 minute consultation in my Walnut Creek and Brentwood offices. .

He worked 44 years at hospital – without a sick day By Aliyah Ramirez Correspondent

Greg Kenny retired on Feb. 17 from John Muir Health after 44 years of service – and without taking a sick day. Kenny worked in the storeroom and mailroom at the John Muir Hospital for 24 years, before becoming distribution technician in materials management, serving at both the Walnut Creek and Brentwood locations. “Being the mailman since 1999, everyone knows the mailman, everybody loves to say ‘hello’ and everyone expects the mailman at the same time every day,”

said Kenny. “Knowing so many people, it was hard to leave.” Despite being given holidays or vacation time off, Kenny remained dedicated to the company, even if it meant working through injuries or illnesses. Since Kenny’s time in school, he never missed a class and felt motivated coming in each day due to the commitment he gave. “Healthcare, I didn’t plan it, but once you start working in it,” said Kenny, “anything that helps save peoples’ lives like police, fire, or soldiers. Everything you do, no matter what you do, in any kind of hospital situation or healthcare situation, you are helping patients and patients love to be helped because they don’t feel well…and

when they start feeling well and you have a part in that, it makes you feel good.” Working in inventory for 40 hours a week, Kenny had to complete multiple tasks each day to keep the hospital running. He was involved in different jobs as part of the materials department. “I was able to get up every morning, go in, and give it 100%, and if I could not give it 100% I would give it the best that I could,” said Kenny. “In 44 years, full time, I never woke up and called my manager saying I’m not coming in. I stood up every day and never missed a day. They used to call me the Cal Ripken of John Muir.” Ripken is Major League Baseball’s ‘Ironman,’ having played in 2,632

consecutive games by 1995 before his retirement in 2001. The patients and Kenny’s co-workers evoked many emotions for Kenny on his last day of work as he remembered the close bonds he made as part of the company. Nevertheless, Kenny has plans for his upcoming retirement, which include traveling, golf, tennis and gardening. “It was like a Hallmark movie, so it was a happy ending,” said Kenny, “because I’m not going to be working anymore. But then to know that I am not going to see these people I’ve known for decades, it won’t be the same, because at work you get close with the people you work with.”

An unidentified person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation following a home garage fire in Oakley Feb. 26. Crews responding to the call on the 3800 block of Cloverbrook Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. found a hybrid electric-propane space heater burning in the garage, with flames spreading to exercise equipment nearby. The fire was put out quickly, and damage to the home was limited to the

garage. The home’s residents and pets were able to safely evacuate, officials said. The person suffering from suspected smoke inhalation was transported to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch. It appeared the fire originated from the space heater and may have resulted from an overload of the electrical system, but the incident’s cause is still under investigation, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Craig Auzenne said. “Gain” is defined as your profit on the transaction, not your equity. Gain is sales price minus selling expenses minus purchase price minus buying expenses minus improvements. Your buying and selling expenses are your closings costs, inspections, commissions, etc. Improvements are what you’ve done to upgrade the home. This does not include what you’ve done to maintain it, only capital improvements. So putting in a pool is an improvement, painting the exterior is usually not (unless you painted it in order to sell it, then it could be argued that it was a “selling expense”). Now that prices have risen so dramatically, people are asking me about capital gains taxes again. There are a lot of myths out there on this topic. The most common myth is that you have to buy another home of equal or greater value in order to avoid paying capital gains taxes. The second is that you must be at least 55 in order to avoid capital gains tax. The third myth is that your capital gains tax will be figured on your equity (sales price minus mortgage balance). None of these are true. Some of them WERE true prior to May 7, 1997, before the tax law changed. Under current tax law, most of the time you can sell your primary residence and avoid capital gains taxes on up to $250,000 of gain if you are single, and $500,000 if you are married. If you have lived in your home for at least two out of the past five years, this will qualify as your primary residence. It doesn’t matter if you are buying another home or not, it doesn’t matter how old you are, and it doesn’t matter if you are currently living in the home.

State champ leads BVAL wrestlers at CIF Meet by Michael Dixon Correspondent

Over the summer, Liberty wrestler Samantha Calkins won a national championship in Fargo, North Dakota. When the high school season began, she was ranked as the best wrestler in her weight class and one of the best wrestlers in the country. With such high acclaim comes high expectations. When the high school season ended, Calkins expected to win a state championship. That goal was met on Saturday at the California Interscholastic Federation Championship Tournament in Bakersfield. Calkins -- who was undefeated on the season and seeded No. 1 in the state tournament -- didn’t always feel that she wrestled her best. But she did well enough to win her matches and reach the final. There, she met fellow senior Galilea Garcia from Schurr High School. Calkins recorded a pin at 3:09 to win the 189-pound weight class. “It felt good,” Calkins said of winning. “I had kind of a bad tournament. I didn’t wrestle to my full capabilities and didn’t stick to my game plan -- made it harder on myself. I know I could have wrestled better. But I got it done and redeemed myself in the finals. I basically wrestled how I wanted in the final.” Calkins was the only Bay Valley Athletic League wrestler to win a state championship but not the only one to place there. Her teammate, junior Sophia Yurkovich, did as well. Yurkovich won her first three matches to advance to the quarterfinals at 160 pounds. She lost there to Merrill West junior (and eventual state champion) Kalila Shrive. But

Samantha Calkins (center) stands with Liberty head coach Alexander Encarnacion-Strand (far left), assistant coach David Calkins, Sophia Yurkovich and former Liberty head coach Greg Chappel at the State Wrestling Championships. Calkins won the 189-pound weight class, while Yurkovich finished fifth in the 160-pound weight class. Yurkovich shook off that loss and won her final two matches to finish in fifth place out of eight finishers. “I felt like I did pretty good,” Yurkovich said. “The first day was a little rough. I was a little tentative but I feel

like I achieved my goal of placing. The season went really, really well. I’m really happy with the tournaments we went to and how the team did overall. And I’m coming off of an injury so I was excited to get back.”

A strong finish has given Yurkovich clear goals for her upcoming senior season on the mat. “I am kind of ambitious,” she said. “I’d like to win state and qualify for nationals. I’m looking to wrestle in college as well. So hopefully, some offers come.” Calkins and Yurkovich were joined in Bakersfield by a pair of Bay Valley Athletic League boys, Heritage sophomore Levi Waller and Liberty junior Anthony Anderson. Waller qualified at 170 pounds and was matched up against fellow sophomore Aden Valencia of Sobrato in the first round when he lost. Anderson, who qualified at 113 pounds, was also defeated in the first round, losing to Gilroy High School freshman Elijah Cortez. Calkins’ attention now shifts to offseason tournaments and next season, college. She has yet to commit to a school. “I think I had a pretty good season -- I ended undefeated, 28-0,” she said. “There were little minute things that I think I could have done differently but overall I think I ended my senior year on a good note.” In addition to winning a state championship, Calkins expressed pride in the way her team competed throughout the season. “As a whole, I’m proud of my team,” she said. “Both sides -- boys and girls. We work hard. We’re one of the hardest-working teams in California. Even though some didn’t do as well as they hoped, I’m proud of them for coming to practice and working as hard as they could at leagues, sectionals and -- if they made it -- state.”

Patriots baseball team seeks steady improvements by Michael Dixon Correspondent

For the better part of a decade, Heritage High’s baseball team has been the class of the Bay Valley Athletic League. But coming into the 2022 season, coach Kevin Brannan’s expectations for the Patriots are tempered. The reason – Heritage’s youth. In 2021’s BVAL only season, the three pitchers who threw the most innings for the Patriots were seniors. Junior Landon Marchetti is the only one of the six pitchers who threw the most innings for Heritage last year to return. But the Patriots are 2-0, and Brannan has been impressed by what he’s seen from the team in early practices and scrimmages. “It seems like this particular group is buying in -- trying to do the little things,” Brannan said. “We’re getting better every day, and expectations are kind of adjusting. I don’t think we’re where we were 2-3 years ago. But a lot of talent at the freshman level and five sophomores on varsity. I’m pleasantly surprised with

what we’re doing so far.” Marchetti is expected to lead the staff. He’s coming off of a sophomore season when he posted a 2.45 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 20 innings. While he threw sparingly as a freshman last year, another returning pitcher is Ryan Williams. Williams will start in the outfield and is being used as a late-inning reliever, though that role could potentially expand. One of the differences between this year’s team and past teams is that there are no pitchers who can reliably go deep into games, the coach said. With that, Brannan will depend on a deep staff. Other players that Brannan will hope to get innings from include junior Zane Baltz, sophomore Mason Roberts and sophomore Brooks Davis. “We can’t really afford to lose anybody on the

mound,” Brannan said. “We don’t have the 2-3 guys that are going to get five innings every time. We’ll be reliant on the whole staff all year long. As we do that process, someone might emerge. But we don’t have 2-3 coming out of the gate.” While the pitching is less of a known quantity than it’s been in the past, the Heritage offense has something that even good teams haven’t had, strong top-of-thelineup speed. That comes from senior Jalen Owens. He played sparingly last year but has made a big impact early, namely with his legs. “He’s a top-of-the-order, speed guy,” Brannan said. “It’s been a while since we’ve had a guy that if you walk, it’s (tantamount to) a double.” see Baseball page 10A

Another senior is infielder Ryan Wheeler. He returns from last year, and Brannan has observed him taking on more of a leadership role, helping his younger teammates in addition to improving his own game. One of those younger teammates includes sophomore Elijah Ward, who Brannan said is likely the shortstop of the future for the program. Another is sophomore first baseman KC Karbowski, who’s shown immense early power. Heritage’s top returning hitter is ju-

nior Anthony Potestio. He hit .406 a season ago and tallied 26 base hits, second on the team. Senior catcher Jojo Roman is another key player. In addition to what he contributes on the field, Roman is also the only player left from the 2020 team that dealt with a short season due to COVID-19. “He’s the last of 2020 group, carrying that torch,” Brannan said. “He’s the only kid who saw that group and its work ethic.” The Patriots will open the BVAL season on Tuesday, April 5. In the weeks

MARCH 4, 2022

leading up to that, they’ll play a lot of strong teams around Northern California. With that, Brannan has encouraged his players and coaches to not dwell too much on any struggles that might come. “My hope is these guys go through the tough part of the schedule, learn from mistakes and at least play to the level of competition,” Brannan said. “So when we get to league (play), there won’t be much that we didn’t see.” When league play begins, Heritage will open up against the team it tied for the

BVAL title a season ago, Pittsburg. Given the talent the Pirates have coming back, Brannan labeled them as the “team to beat.” Brannan also expects to see strong competition from Liberty, which boasts a deep lineup and Freedom, which has a strong front end of the starting rotation. “For the first time in a long time, it will be really competitive,” Brannan said of the BVAL slate. “I don’t think we’ve been looking up for a long time. It will be interesting to see what kind of team we have when we get to that point.”

Ajax East Bay and Impact Soccer Clubs merge East County’s Ajax East Bay and Impact Soccer clubs have merged to become the East County Revolution FC. The move was recently approved by both club’s board of directors, memberships and the Norcal Premier Soccer Board of Directors. The two clubs will be coming together immediately with the opening of the fall 2022 Recreational program registration. Competitive teams will continue to finish their 2021-22 spring season with their existing clubs and teams, and new combined teams will be formed dur-

ing the 2022-23 competitive season tryouts starting in May. “This means that our community will have one stronger club to support our players, families, teams and staff,” the organizations said in a statement. “We will be offering programs for players ages 2 through adult. “ “This is an excellent opportunity for our two clubs to combine resources to better serve our membership and community,” said East County Revolution FC Coaching Director Tom Ginocchio. “Both clubs have strong players, and coaches, to partner with a tremendous support staff of volunteers and office administrators. Merging allows us to elevate soccer in our area, and I look forward to working with everyone involved with EC Revolution to help our players achieve their goals.”

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. anyone – regardless of vaccination status – except in hightransmission settings such as public transit, health care and correctional facilities and shelters. The president of the Liberty Education Association read a letter to the board decrying mask choice, citing teacher health as one of the reasons students and staff should remain masked. However, teachers wrote letters to the board and disagreed with the association’s stance and supporting mask choice. During the meeting, the board voted on several resolutions that failed, and came to an agreement only after editing the original resolution that prompted the meeting in the first place. The resolution was crafted by LUHSD Superintendent Eric Volta and district counsel at the board’s request after discussion during last week’s regular meeting about

Speaking of high-density, the parcel of land in question is currently zoned as R-1, which indicates low-density residential. In order to build out the proposed amount of residential units, Eden Housing will be required to pursue an amendment to the city’s General Plan. This has some residents of the surrounding neighborhoods pushing back. One meeting attendee stated his concern about the property value of his home, worth over $1 million, going down, along with more crime, with the result being a mass exodus of current homeowners in the area. Many homes in the surrounding neighborhoods – Rose Garden, Granville Estates, Prewett Ranch, and Sterling Preserve – are valued at more than $800,000, which makes buying in the area a difficult prospect for first-time or low/mid-income buyers. Rob Simonds, Director of Housing Development for Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley said, “Our buyers want to be part of the community but don’t have

how to handle unmasked students. Monday’s gathering was a special meeting called to vote on that resolution. Trustee Roy Ghiggeri said he did not want to lose sight of the resolution that the board supports mask choice. “I think everyone who spoke here spoke from their hearts, and we need to help them,” Ghiggeri said. “I would like this resolution to show our intent as a board from this point on. I think we should still go with this. The district will be safer, the kids can get started earlier making a choice about their masks.” Before the vote, Volta recommended the board continue to follow state guidance as it has done since March of 2020. Volta, a district parent, said parents sent their students to school every day and the district had a responsibility to their students. He noted there are many rules on school campuses, all in place for student safety, and the deal reached

$250,000 to put down on a home. They want a safe, healthy place to live, just like the rest of you.” The topic of low-income housing increasing crime came up frequently during the public meeting. Residents said that including affordable rental units to the project will bring more crime to the area. “We don’t want the riff-raff! Take it somewhere else!” Daniela Costantino argued. Sinzania Todor, a Brentwood resident, requested police logs from other cities where Eden Housing has built and manages lowincome properties. While there were no police reports readily available, Eden Housing’s Vice President of Residential Services, Anna Gwyn Simpson, gave anecdotal evidence of studies in Hayward and Gilroy that showed a decreased crime rate in the immediate residential areas, due to efficient property management and on-site services offered. Brentwood Community Development Director Alexis Morris said in an email, “The last time an entirely affordable project was approved was in March 2011, for

ing any warning or a reasonable opportunity to surrender.” The lawsuit claims that Rezentes allowed Marco, his K9 partner, to “bite and gnaw on Ms. Bates’ scalp and skull for an extended period of time” despite her pleas for him to call the dog office. Marco allegedly ignored his handler’s commands to stop and had to be physically removed by Rezentes, according to the suit. According to the suit, officers violated Bates’ Constitutional right to not be subjected to excessive force. Following coverage from San Francisco media outlets KRON and KTVU as well as national news, the Brentwood Police Officers’ Association released a statement regarding

between the teachers union and the district last year stated all state mandates would be followed. “It is because of (the deal) and because all of our teachers have done an excellent job doing the best they can under not great circumstances,” Volta said. “I would hate for us to start questioning which rules are appropriate and which are not, so my recommendation is we wait until the 11th when the masks come off. That way, there is no risk to us financially, there is no risk for undue time spent for not following the (deal) and we can just focus on our students and move forward from this event.” Fallout from the decision is yet to be seen, but the meeting attendees cheered the board’s decision loudly. a 54-unit apartment project known as The Grove at Sunset Court (NEC of Havenwood Avenue and Brentwood Boulevard).” As part of the city’s municipal code, they also ensure that construction of affordable, single-family units are being included in plans for new developments dispersed throughout Brentwood. Even these efforts are not enough to meet the requirement put out by the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s Regional Housing Need Allocation Plan (RHNA Plan). The latest data from Cycle 5 of the RHNA, which runs from Jan. 31, 2015 to Jan. 31, 2023, shows that the City of Brentwood falls significantly short of the state-mandated goal for permits issued for very low and low-income housing units. In that time frame, the RHNA Plan set the goal of 234 units for very low-income individuals and 124 units for low income individuals, but only 3 and 13 permits were issued, respectively, coming in at 1.3% towards the final goal. In the same time period, there have been 2,819 permits issued for homes being built

the lawsuit and its media coverage. “As has become commonplace in recent years, those media outlets abdicated their responsibility to inform the public on the facts of an incident, and instead have chosen to demonize the police and fan the flames of racial discord,” the statement begins. “Contrary to what was reported by the media, this was not just ‘a shoplifting incident’ and the use of a police K9 had nothing to do with the race of the suspects.” Bates is Black. The statement from the Police Officers’ Association, an independent organization, asserts context is missing from coverage of the lawsuit that justifies the events. “One of the areas being searched was a field with large swaths of nearly impenetrable shrubbery and trees,”

the statement explains. “These types of areas are especially dangerous for police officers to search, due to the fact that potentially armed suspects can easily conceal themselves inside the overgrown vegetation, and officers may not see the suspect until they are right upon them. This is one of numerous scenarios where utilizing a police dog helps keep our officers safe.” According to the association, police dogs are trained to bite down on the first body part they come in contact with, which was the top of Bates’ head in this case. Bates was ordered to come out from the bushes, the statement says as part of a standard safe practice due to officers being unable to determine if she was armed. To comment, visit www.thepress.net

and sold to individuals in the above-moderate Income demographic, which comes in at 1,010.4% of the RHNA’s 279-unit goal. The O’Hara Avenue and Lone Tree Way property was bought by the Episcopal Diocese of California in 2002, but has been vacant since its purchase. At one time, the diocese had hoped to build a church on the land, but their vision has since shifted. According to the project’s website, “The community would include market-rate, singlefamily homes, affordable townhomes for first-time homebuyers, and affordable rental housing for low-income families. The centerpiece of Blue Bird Village is Jubilee Farm, an organic farm and orchard operated by the Farm Church Ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of California.” Blue Bird Village will be holding their next community meeting on Wednesday, March 16, at 6 p.m. For more information about the project, or to leave feedback, visit https://www. bluebirdvillagebrentwood.com/. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING. COM, using the file number assigned to this case 090669-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 090669-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives

it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Since opening in 1971, Alameda Pediatric Dentistry has built a reputation for providing exceptional dental care that families trust. As they have grown, they have modernized operations and technology to exceed industry standards, yet their beginning as a small-town practice continues to define their values and company culture.

APD has deep roots within the Alameda community. Several employees have worked there for over 30 years. In fact, Dr. David Perry has been with APD since 1973! Additionally, many of their employees are former APD patients, including Dr. Sharine Thenard, who became a partner in 2005. She continues the legacy of providing the same attentive, individualized care that she received from the practice as a child. Dr. Mylinh Ngo partnered with APD in 2008 and brings immense empathy and expertise in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Thenard shares, “We employ a focused approach for each individual patient, as they are all unique. Our dentists have specialized in techniques to provide the best possible care. Because

we have a full variety of services and every tool at our disposal, we can provide a complete array of treatment options: preventative, restorative, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and even general anesthesia administered in-office or at Kaiser Hospital.” APD is able to see all children, including those with special needs! They can create an environment where your child feels comfortable, and they take extra steps to cater to whatever your needs may be. Kids rave about the televisions above the chairs, showing whatever Disney+ movie they choose while they receive their cleaning. At the end of the visit, they leave with a special goodie bag and a smile on their face. When you bring your children into the care of this

group of board-certified pediatric dentists, you are placing them in the hands of highly qualified doctors and a team whose life goals have led them to serve you. Families return for treatment, generation after generation. Come visit and let your children tell you why! From the team at APD: “Here at Alameda Pediatric Dentistry, what matters the most is that we leave a positive impact on kids in the Bay Area for decades to come. Our dentists not only treat kids today, but they prepare children for lifelong healthy smiles. We truly love to make kids smile!” For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please call 925-516-4107 or visit www. AlamedaPediatricDentistry.com. – Advertorial

the greatest pieces that defines its character and personality. Dr. Shailain Patel, of Orchard Dentistry and Orthodontics, works with an ethic that encompasses and displays the values of compassion and community. Having been in business for many years, Orchard works with its patients with the understanding that they are sensitive and they are human. Patel explained the importance of producing quality work and developing meaningful relationships with his patients. “My goal is more quality over quantity, so I have a practice where we do not see many patients during the day,” Patel said. He said he has a responsibility to look at the patient as a whole, and not solely their teeth. As he says, dentists have a responsibility to improve a persons’ overall health. “I am the type of dentist that doesn’t look just at teeth

“Dermatology is the study of skin, hair and nails,” said Dr. Robert Beer of Balfour Dermatology. “Most people know skin, but they don’t realize hair and nails. In terms of skin, we do lots of things, the most common being mole checks, but we also address psoriasis, warts, and any type of rash, and, of course, diagnosing skin cancer and treating skin cancer.” Beer has been practicing dermatology for more than two decades. His office in Brentwood has been open for 20 years and is home to five practicing dermatologists. He said there are many options for those with skin concerns, including needle-free procedures. “These days we have lots of options – even nonsurgical options – for treating skin cancer, and we can even do a biopsy without a needle,” said Beer. “We also have a large cosmetic practice, so we do Botox and fillers and lasers, and we have

But skin cancer is not the only thing he and his team handle. “We cover hair problems,” Beer said, adding that general practitioners are often stumped by hair loss. “There are treatments now, there are all kinds of ways of diagnosing hair loss and since we see it for a majority of our people after the age of 40, I think it’s important to find out what’s causing hair loss.” Beer noted his office also diagnoses and treats nail issues on fingernails and toenails, and works with all ages, from newborns to seniors. Because of its longevity and patient commitment, Balfour Dermatology has a following in East County and beyond. Jennifer C. of Oakley said she appreciated the way the office treated her, from the time she booked her appointment all the way through treatment. “Dr. Beer’s office staff is professional and so welcoming every time we walk in the door,” she said. “They acknowledge their patients, are courteous, and friendly. When to get age-based health screenings

E

arly detection is crucial to overcoming serious illnesses. Parents can prioritize

preventive care when raising children, but it’s a crucial component of healthy living as an adult as well. Health professionals recommend various age-specific screenings and tests, and these can serve as a guideline for individuals as they navigate adulthood. The following age-specific health screening recommendations from Beaumont Health and Columbia Doctors Primary Care can serve as an preventive care guideline, though doctors may advise patients to get more frequent screenings depending on their medical histories. 18 to 39 years old ♦ Cholesterol: A cholesterol check should occur around age 20, then every five years until age 35. Afterward it can occur annually. ♦ Skin screening: An annual full body screening will identify any suspicious moles or skin lesions. ♦ Cervical cancer: Women in this age range should receive a Pap smear every three years and an annual pelvic exam. ♦ Breast exam: Self-examination of the breasts and examination by a clinical provider should take place every year. ♦ Testicular exam: Men should conduct self exams for testicular abnormalities. Doctors may examine the testicles during annual physicals as well. ♦ Tdap vaccine: All adults should get the Tdap vaccine if they did not receive it as an adolescent to protect against pertussis, and then a Td (tetanus, diphtheria) booster shot every 10 years.

♦ HPV vaccine: The human papillomavirus vaccine is recommended if you did not receive it as an adolescent. 40 to 64 years old ♦ Zoster (Shingles) vaccine: Two doses of this vaccine will be administered between two and six months apart starting at age 50 and up. ♦ Colorectal screening: A colonoscopy to detect any colorectal illnesses is recommended beginning at age 50. ♦ Prostate screening: Prostate screenings begin at age 50 unless you are a high-risk individual, in which case screenings begin at age 40. ♦ Osteoporosis: Doctors may recommend a bone density test and osteoporosis

screening at age 50 and up if certain risk factors are present. ♦ Lung cancer screening: If you are a past or current smoker, it’s wise to have an annual lung cancer screening. The American Lung Association says adults age 55 and up can have this screening covered by health insurance. ♦ Mammogram: Women should begin receiving annual mammograms at age 40. 65 years and older ♦ Cervical cancer: Most women can stop getting Pap smears at this age if they have no history of cervical cancer. Women who have had a hysterectomy may no longer need pelvic exams after age 65.

♦ Pneumococcal and pneumonia vaccines: These are recommended every five years for certain conditions and risk factors. ♦ Cognitive health: Doctors may assess your cognitive health to see if there are any risk factors for dementias. In addition to these screenings, doctors may conduct annual depression screenings to assess mental health. Routine blood glucose monitoring may be necessary based on risk factors for diabetes. Individuals are urged to speak to their doctors to map out a health screening schedule specific to their needs. – Courtesy of Metro Creative

More screen time can harm kids’ health

I

ncreased screen time might be

leading to more mental health problems for kids, according to

the Journal of the American Medical Association-Pediatrics (JAMA-Pediatrics). “During the COVID-19 pandemic, many children increased screen time use due to online school, stay-at-home orders and general social isolation,” said Richard Freed, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist at Kaiser Permanente Antioch Medical Center. “JAMA-Pediatrics recently reported that children nearly doubled their screen time use during the pandemic. Unfortunately, this increase is posing mental health risks for kids because it displaces the activities we know are helpful to children and adolescents, including quality time with family, physical activity,

and engaging with their teachers and school communities.” The cumulative effect of excessive screen time is leading to mental health problems for children, experts say. “Children are experiencing anxiousness and stress in part because screen time has remained elevated even as pandemic restrictions are lifted,” Freed added. Here are some tips for helping your child cut back on his or her screen time use: ♦ Help children and adolescents do things that we know support their mental health, including time with family and physical activity. That leaves less time for screens. ♦ Kids might need parent support and structure to get back into school routines, such as turning off screens and completing homework. ♦ Cutting back on screen time use does not mean no screen time at all. Try setting some limits on children’s usage and work

Smile of the Week

Brought to you by

on a plan to limit screen time per day. ♦ Don’t allow children to use their screens before bedtime, which can disrupt sleep. Encourage them to read books or play quiet games instead. ♦ Model good behavior. Put your own screens away and show children the importance of finding other activities to occupy their time. ♦ Encourage children to play outdoors or take up a new hobby. Find ways to expand their in-person social interactions, such as joining a club or an after-school activity. ♦ Go on walks, have family game nights, start a family book club, or work on puzzles. Find other ways to keep your children occupied and engaged. ♦ Talk to your children about the importance of staying engaged with others and how screens prohibit them from developing the social skills they need to be successful. – Courtesy of Kaiser Permanente
