Man faces at least 50 years in jail in killing of cop REGIONAL Oakland resident Mark Estrada, the man accused of killing Brentwood resident and Hayward Police Sgt. Scott Lunger following a traffic stop in 2015, has reached a plea deal with Alameda County prosecutors that could send him to jail for at least 50 years, Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley recently announced. Estrada was convicted of first-degree murder and admitted to the use of the firearm that murdered Lunger, according to a news release from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Estrada’s sentencing is set for March 18. The agreement came one week before opening statements in the case were to begin. “We are pleased that the defendant has been held accountable for the violent murder of Hayward Police Sergeant Scott Lunger,” O’Malley said. “Sergeant Lunger’s tragic death shook the Hayward Police Department and community.
Police officers put themselves in harm’s way every day while working to keep our communities safe. It is imperative that we diligently pursue convictions and appropriate sentences for those who injure or kill police officers in the line of duty. We hope that this conviction and his sentencing will bring a sense of closure and justice for Sergeant Lunger’s family, friends, his law enforcement colleagues and the community.” Prosecutors alleged that Estrada, 21 at the time of the incident in 2015, opened fire on Lunger after being pulled over for driving erratically just after 3 a.m. on July 22 near Myrtle and Lion Streets in Hayward. Before Lunger approached the truck, Estrada fired three shots, striking Lunger in the head and leg. Estrada fled the scene but was arrested later the same day, according to the news release. Estrada was on trial in 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic struck, resulting in a mistrial, according to the news release.

REGIONAL Two local authors, Brandon Lawson and Gerald Botlz, are taking matters into their own hands. The authors have chosen to self-publish their respective novels in order to have greater control over the process and get around being ignored by major publishing companies. “Virtually no name publishers accept manuscripts from writers without agents,” Boltz said. “I tried for two years to get an agent without success. Very few even acknowledged my query.”
After encouragement from writer friends who enjoyed his work, the 82-year-old Bethel Island resident made the decision to publish his mystery thriller series himself. Since then, he has written four novels, with the first two widely available, even from major retailers such as Barnes & Noble. The other two books are in rewrites to be published soon. Boltz’s thrillers, first published in 2006, follow the adventures of Trenton Russell, a former government agent turned card counter on the blackjack circuit. The author drew from

REGIONAL Contra Costa County lifted the universal mask requirements for most indoor public settings this week to stay aligned with state guidelines. Unvaccinated people older than 2 are still required to wear masks in all indoor public settings. Businesses, venue operators and hosts may determine their own paths forward to protect staff and patrons and may choose to require all patrons to wear masks. Indoor masking is still required by the state for everyone, regardless of vaccination status, in public transportation; health care settings; congregate settings like correctional facilities and homeless shelters; longterm care facilities; and in K-12 schools and childcare settings. The change aligns with the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) decision to let expire the statewide indoor mask requirement implemented on Dec. 15 during the latest COVID-19 surge. “Continuing to mask in indoor public settings, especially crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, remains the safest choice for an individual and protects those who are medically vulnerable or are not able to get vaccinated, like our youngest children,” read a joint statement from 11 Bay Area health officers “As evidence continues to show, vaccinations and boosters remain the best defense against the see Masks page 22

Police release more double homicide details ANTIOCH The Antioch Police Department has released the name of the suspect and two victims involved in a double homicide in late January. Antioch resident John Henderson Walton, 34, is accused of killing his 15-year-old son, Malik El-Ameen, and Walton’s 30-yearold female friend Alexis Parson. Henderson is in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility on a no-bail warrant for murder, police said. Both El-Ameen and Parson died from blunt force trauma, police said. Police found the victims unresponsive inside a home on the 2100 block of Lemon Tree Way at about 8:15 p.m., on Jan. 29 after a
neighbor asked police to check on their neighbor, who had not been heard from in several days. Both victims suffered from obvious trauma, and the incident was determined to be a homicide, police said. Henderson was in a relationship with the Parson, and El-Ameen was Henderson’s biological son, police said. Henderson was arrested by Redwood City police on Jan. 29 at a Redwood City train station after Antioch police developed a suspect description and broadcasted it to Bay Area law enforcement agencies, authorities said.
Three charged with assault at Brentwood CVS store BRENTWOOD The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office has charged three juveniles with assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse after police say they assaulted a CVS employee and two customers during a suspected theft at the CVS on Balfour Road in Brentwood on Jan. 30, police said. The unidentified 15- and 16-year-olds are accused of assaulting the CVS employee and two elderly customers after police say they
stole items from the store. Police arrived to find that the teenage suspects had fled the store, but police tracked down all three nearby. The assault victims, two of whom the juveniles allegedly pepper-sprayed, were treated by paramedics on the scene. Police did not disclose what the juveniles are accused of stealing or if the merchandise was retrieved after the arrests.

Fire damages duplex in Oakley by Melissa van Ruiten Correspondent
OAKLEY No one was reported hurt when one side of a single-story duplex on the 3300 block of Main Street in Oakley was damaged by a small fire last Saturday afternoon. The call came in at 1:30 p.m., and crews from both East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District arrived to find a column of smoke coming from the front door. Personnel from Station 53 in Oakley said the home was unoccupied and put out the fire quickly. According to Fire Marshall Steve Aubert, the fire started in the hallway of the small unit, before spreading to a laundry basket. “Water damage was minimal and there was smoke damage throughout [the unit],” said Aubert. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental. To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia/slideshows

Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors appoints new health officer The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors this week appointed Dr. Ori Tzvieli as the county’s new health officer. Tzvieli has helped to lead the county’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic for the past two years as a deputy health officer. He fills a vacancy left by Dr. Chris Farnitano, who has stepped down from the role in preparation for retirement after more than 30 years caring for Contra Costa County residents. “Dr. Farnitano will be missed. We are glad Dr. Tzvieli is ready to step into a role that is so crucial for the health and safety of our county residents during the pandemic,” said Board of Supervisors Chair Karen Mitchoff. “Over the past two years, both of them have contributed to one of the finest local responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in California.” Each county in California appoints a health officer who has broad authority under the state Health & Safety Code and is responsible for protecting the health of residents within their jurisdictions. “Dr. Tzvieli has helped to lead our county’s emergency response since the beginning. We are fortunate
to have someone with his experience and community knowledge ready to step up,” Contra Costa Health Director Anna Roth said. “I am very confident that he will help to continue our strong efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19 in Contra Costa County.” Tzvieli joined Contra Costa Health (CCH) as a family medicine resident at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in 2000, launching a career in the county’s healthcare delivery system that has led to several leadership roles, including Medical Staff President, Ambulatory Care Medical Director, Public Health Medical Director and now Director of Public Health, serving under Roth. During his time with CCH, Tzvieli has championed collaborative efforts to address opioid addiction and cared for some of the county’s most vulnerable residents as medical director of the Health Care for the Homeless program. Farnitano will formally retire in March. He became Contra Costa County Health Officer in July 2018, after previously serving as Ambulatory Care Medical Director at CCRMC and Family Medicine Department Chair, among other roles.

For the Record The story titled “Brentwood picks spot for youth center” in the Feb. 4 edition of The Press misidentified the possible location of the future youth center. The possible location is on Guthrie Lane. A quote by Ruth Buzzard in the story “How and why to write a living trust” in the Jan. 28 edition of the Money Matters section of The Press should have read, “Creating a trust is like creating a corporation, it is a legal entity that exists on paper.”

Lucay is half of the husband-and-wife team, with his wife Michele, that owns and operates the winery, located on Chestnut Street. “I am especially proud of our Chardonnay.” Serendipity’s Chardonnay was one of three Double Gold medal winners in a class of 54 wines, competing against wines from well-known wine appellations such as Napa Valley and Russian River Valley. The winery’s Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino were all awarded Silver in their respective categories while their Rosé took home a Bronze. Lucay credits his award-winning wines to the hands-on approach he and his family take to their craft. “We are family-owned and -operated, we touch every vine to ensure the quality of the fruit, we crush every pound of grapes, and we press every gallon of must/wine,” said Lucay. “Everything we do is on the property and cared for by family.” DOUBLE GOLD Chardonnay

by Jake Menez REGIONAL Four Contra Costa County wineries each scored multiple awards at the 2022 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition that ran from Jan. 11-14. The competition, begun in 1983 as the Cloverdale Citrus Fair Wine Competition, is the largest competition of American wines in the world, according to its website. The 48 judges (wine and travel writers, and sommeliers) of the 2022 event evaluated 5,816 wines from roughly 1,000 wineries nationwide. Among the thousands of wines entered were some from Campos Family Vineyard in Byron as well as Serendipity Cellars, Bloomfield Vineyards and Hannah Nicole Vineyards, all out of Brentwood. BBQ King Cook-off set for Super Bowl Sunday For those hankerin’ for barbecue in East County, this Sunday marks the 20th annual BBQ King Cook-off at Bowlero’s Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood. Brentwood Police Activities League (PAL) founder and former Harvest Park Bowl owner Jim Wangeman said the cookoff was started over a couple of guys boasting about whose barbecue was best. “It got started when Mike McPoland was mayor (of Brentwood),” said Wangeman. “I was just chit-chatting and talking … (McPoland) was bragging about what a great barbequer he was. So, I said, ‘OK, you’re on – Super Bowl Sunday at Harvest (Park Bowl)’.” That was it, the BBQ King Cook-off became an annual Super Bowl Sunday tradition at the bowl, and 100 percent of the event’s proceeds benefit PAL and the East Contra Costa Historical Society. Despite winning the BBQ of the Grill title three times over the years, chuckling a bit, Wangeman said that first year, “biased judges gave him (McPoland) first place.” There were only three competitors that

(I’m working on a solution to that problem right now, so check back here for an update soon…). It’s possible we will see inventory continue to stay low. There is still a big demand from buyers, who seem to gobble up new inventory as it comes on. On top of that, think of all the people who are sitting on 2 or 3% interest rates on their mortgages. If mortgage rates go up, are they going to be in big hurry to leave that great rate behind when they buy another home? The Contra Costa County Sheriff ’s Office Delta Station recently announced it received a $164,000 grant that will be used to install more license plate reader cameras in the Discovery Bay area. “The sheriff ’s office was awarded the grant through the Homeland Security Grant Program,” said Lt. Mark Johnson, commander for the Contra Costa County Sheriff ’s Office Delta Station. “The idea is we want to put some cameras on Marsh Creek Road and some more in Discovery Bay and some in Byron.” Johnson noted the funds were specifically for license plate reader cameras. He said the office sent in the grant application in 2020. The awarded money went to Johnson to use in far East County. “This is something the sheriff ’s department brought forward as a means to enhance the existing automated license
The number of homes for sale in our area is still VERY low. As in historical lows… I’ve been tracking the number of homes for sale for over 23 years now and it’s hovering down as low as I’ve ever seen it. For some perspective, in the past, the highest I’d ever seen in Brentwood was 655 back in mid 2007. The lowest I’d ever seen in Brentwood was 42 back in early 2013. So far in 2022, most of January our inventory has been around 25-35 homes. Keep in mind that the population of Brentwood is MUCH higher than in 2007, which means we have a LOT more homes physically than we used to. Therefore, the number of homes for sale as a percentage of the existing homes is really, really tiny compared to then. Homes are selling quickly, so that’s part of the reason. But I think the main reason is that people who own homes but want to move are feeling “stuck” in their homes. They can’t buy without selling

plate reader cameras,” said Joe Selby, the chair of the Discovery Bay P6 Committee, which serves as an advisory body to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors and Contra Costa County Sheriff ’s Office. “To my mind, that’s a great idea. We have really good coverage as it is now, and being able to add some spots of missed coverage will make the net tighter.” While it is difficult to recognize a direct correlation between installation of license plate readers and a decrease in crime, officers say they believe they will help in identifying stolen vehicles. There is no map of the cameras available for public view. Publicizing such information would presumably encourage more criminal activity and vandalism, officials said. In 2018, the P6 committee voted to spend up to $350,000 on two dozen of the cameras. Similar cameras exist in many other parts of the Bay Area, including the Highway 4 corridor in Pittsburg. Once installed, the new cameras will augment the existing license plate readers. Johnson said he does not have a firm idea of cost yet. The project is out to bid, and Johnson hopes to get some estimates soon. The original cameras cost between $13,000 and $15,000 each.

Valentine’s Day - what’s love got to do with it? Tina Turner may have gotten it right. February, the month known for Valentine’s Day, is the most symbolic month for love. Candy shops explode in their highest sales and florists can’t keep up with the demand for roses. The irony is that from January through March, the divorce rate spikes in the United States. For those who feel the need for a partner to be complete in this month, February may also be the loneliest month of the year. The American author Bell Hooks wrote: “Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape.”
I would like to reframe February and offer a challenge - to welcome the opportunities to build a relationship with yourself. Too often when a relationship fails, it is natural to begin dating again, and even marry again. We often confuse being lonely with being alone. Avoiding ourselves, even running from ourselves, is not unusual. However, here is the reality: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the rate of divorce increases in relation to the number of marriages. When it comes to a happy union, the third time clearly isn’t a charm. While the rate of divorce in first marriages is 40%-50%, second marriage statistics show this increases to 67% for failed second
marriages and a whopping 73% for third marriages, according to Psychology Today. Through my own career and personal transitions, I found that I needed to have a relationship with myself first before finding meaningful love with someone else. In the process of self recognition, I rediscovered who and what I left on the table a long time ago. I had to resurrect myself back to complete what fulfills happiness for me. What would February look like if you made a commitment to love yourself first? What do you need to rediscover all your capabilities and passions? Take yourself out for a date. Create alone time to revisit your own internal strengths and dreams. Wheth-
er you are in a relationship or not, this new outlook can be a cleanser to refresh the beauty of you and strengthen your relationship with others. If this challenge seems impossible, you may want to reach out to a friend or a professional to partner with you to keep you accountable to this goal. Choose carefully who your partner is for your self discovery. If you choose a professional, a life coach can partner with you for your self discovery and self-growth. After all, Tina Turner did get it right. Loving yourself first has everything to do with it. Happy Valentine’s Day! – Christina Dalton is the Principal of EYH Life Coach.
What every woman should know about heart health February is a good time to focus on everyone’s heart health, including learning common symptoms of a heart attack for both men and women, and what to do if one strikes. Heart disease is often thought to be more of a health issue affecting men. However, it’s the most common cause of death for women in the United States, causing about 300,000 deaths annually. Because symptoms in women can differ from those in men, it can be more difficult to spot the signs. By understanding the symptoms and making healthier lifestyle choices, you may help reduce your risk. Heart disease doesn’t occur just in older women. Young women, especially those with a family history of heart disease, should also take precautions. Knowing the symptoms, risk factors and hearthealthy lifestyle tips may help protect you. Heart disease symptoms for women may range from
the common signs like pressure in the chest, which is similar for both men and women. However, women are more likely than men to experience a variety of other symptoms. This may be because women tend to have blockages in smaller arteries, as well as their main arteries. Symptoms to watch out for include nausea, vomiting, sweating, lightheadedness or fatigue. Other symptoms are pain or discomfort in the neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, abdomen or back. Women also may not experience any symptoms if their heart disease is “silent” meaning they may not know they have heart disease until they experience a heart attack, arrhythmia or heart failure. While there may be risk factors you can’t control, making the choice to start a heart-healthy lifestyle is one way to help lower your risk of heart disease. In fact, studies show that healthy choices have resulted in 330 fewer

women dying from heart disease per day. Consider these changes to help lower your risk of heart disease: • Quit smoking • Exercise regularly • Eat healthier • Manage your stress • Limit alcohol consumption • Monitor your blood pressure • Prioritize sleep During this year’s American Heart Month in February, it’s the right time to learn more about the disease and if you may be at increased risk. Don’t wait for the symptoms to appear – take preventable action to help maintain your health. – By Dr. Damanpreet Jamarai, Senior Medical Director, UnitedHealthcare, California.

FIRST Tech Challenge at Daly City The Heritage High School FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics team recently won the Control Award at the Northern California FIRST Tech Challenge Daly City qualifier on Jan. 22. The Heritage squad is composed of 15 members. The Control Award celebrates a team that uses sen-
sors and software to increase robots’ functionality in the field. It is given to the team that demonstrates innovative thinking to solve game challenges, such as autonomous operation, improving mechanical systems with intelligent control, or using sensors to achieve better results. Heritage programming students Adeel Ahmad and Anthony Rubick were also instrumental in helping the team pull off the victory, said Heritage business and technology teacher Robert Pardi. Supervisors honor Village Community Resource Center The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors recently honored the Village Community Resource Center during a recent supervisors’ meeting for its community contributions. Village Community Resource Center, which has offices in Brentwood and Byron, provides after-school academics, health clinics, counseling services, parent-peer support groups and preventive mental health well-being practices.
It has been instrumental in the COVID-19 information distribution, testing and vaccination process, said Supervisor Diane Burgis. “I so appreciate the Village Community Resource Center’s partnership with the county to provide access to COVID information, testing, and vaccinations to residents of East County, in addition to the other services provided on a daily basis,” said Burgis, who represents
the residents of District 3. “Village Community Resource Center was also a trusted messenger during Census 2020 outreach, helping to ensure a complete count.” Village Community Resource Center was founded in 1995, and with the help of passionate volunteers and donors, it has expanded into an East County resource, Burgis said. Falcon wrestlers prepare for postseason by Michael Dixon Correspondent
With the regular season now complete and the Bay Valley Athletic League, North Coast Section and California Interscholastic Federation tournaments looming, things have gone well for the Freedom High wrestling team. The Falcons finished the regular season with a 5-0 record in BVAL meets. Early in the season, Freedom coach Aaron Perez realized his team could be special. The Falcons got things going with a 4-1 record at their home tournament, the Falcon Duals. Golden Valley, a strong program out of the San Joaquin Section, handed Freedom its only loss there and went on to win the tournament. A week later, the Falcons sent what Perez called “half a lineup” to Castro Valley’s Bay Area 58 tournament. Despite being short-handed, Freedom placed third, with multiple wrestlers reaching the finals. “I started to realize that at full strength, we would be a contender for another BVAL Championship this season,” Perez said. That feeling only grew at the Drew Esquivel Duals at Healdsburg High School. Freedom’s varsity team went 5-0 to win,

lent and with that, the schedule changed. Some events were canceled. The BVAL schedule was redone. The Falcons weathered those changes, though, and when things got going again, picked up more or
less where they left off. “Luckily, we were back in time to be at full strength for our new league schedule and see Wrestling page 15
Super Bowl LVI will feature Freedom graduate Joe Mixon by Michael Dixon Correspondent
When Evan McPherson’s 31-yard field goal attempt in overtime of the AFC Championship Game went through the uprights, the Cincinnati Bengals had clinched their first trip to the Super Bowl in 33 years. That kick also guaranteed that, for the first time, a Freedom High School alum will play on the NFL’s biggest stage. When Cincinnati takes the field for Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, one of the players will be running back Joe Mixon, No. 28. Before his days in the NFL, Mixon was on the Freedom High School gridiron. In his three years on the Falcons varsity team (2011-2013), Mixon ran for 4,281 yards with 57 touchdowns. After graduating from Freedom in 2014, Mixon went to the University of Oklahoma and was drafted by the Bengals in the second round in 2017. Freedom Athletic Director Sandy Torres wasn’t the athletic director when Mixon was at Freedom but she’s known him for a long time. Her husband, Drew Torres, coached Mixon on the Falcons basketball team. “Joe has been a role model since he was a student-athlete at Freedom,” Sandy Torres said. “He’s always been humble,

When he was here, he was known for being a hard worker in the classroom, on the court and on the field.” Mixon has also remained in touch with his Freedom roots. He’s invited Drew Torres as well as his high school football
coach, Kevin Hartwig, to the Super Bowl in Los Angeles. Mixon also puts on a summer camp every year for the young football players in the community. Normally, being in Cincinnati would keep Mixon away from the Freedom football team during the season. But when
the COVID-19 pandemic moved the 2020 season to the spring of 2021, Mixon was there to support the Falcons. Torres remembered him being on the sidelines for all of Freedom’s games that year. “He hangs out on the sidelines, talks to former coaches and administrators and supports his high school team,” Torres said. “That means so much to the community and players.” Mixon is the Bengals’ starting running back. During the regular season, Mixon rushed for 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns, both career highs. He also set a career high in receiving yards with 314 and tied his career-high with three receiving touchdowns. Mixon’s postseason debut was modest. He carried the ball 17 times for 48 yards in Cincinnati’s 26-19 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Wild Card weekend. From there, Mixon ran for 51 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries in the Divisional Round win over the Tennessee Titans. He also caught seven passes for 51 yards. In the AFC Championship Game win over the Kansas City Chiefs, Mixon rushed for 88 yards on 21 carries, saving his best for last. In overtime, an interception from see Mixon page 15

Wrestling from page 14 able to beat all of the teams in our league for another 5-0 season,” Perez said. “This is the third year we have been able to put together an undefeated BVAL season and it puts our Falcon wrestlers in a great position to bring home another league championship to Freedom. We enter the postseason with a 14-1 record as a dual team.” “Overall, the regular season turned out a lot better than I had imagined,” he added. “We graduated half a lineup of seniors last season, so I expected much more of a bumpy ride as far as competition was concerned.” While “one day at a time” is often heard in sports, it’s been particularly common during the COVID-19 pandemic, when events are often canceled at the drop of a hat. That’s been a rallying cry for Freedom. The current Falcons also know that as frustrating as the current changes have been, they’re fortunate. Last year’s seniors, for example, had no postseason and only an abbreviated regular season to finish their high school careers. Perez also had to find creative ways to help the Falcons find ways to continue
Mixon from page 14 Vonn Bell gave the Bengals the ball with good field position but they still needed to pick up yardage to be in position for the winning score. They did, moving 55 yards before quarterback Joe Burrow took an intentional three-yard loss to center the ball for McPherson’s winning kick. Mix-

All in all, it came down to focusing on what you can control and making a commitment to improve regardless of the circumstances.” The Falcons have also had to deal with injuries in recent weeks that have had some of their top wrestlers sidelined for the remainder of the season. Oakley resident charged in Brentwood arson cases The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office filed arson charges against a 25-year-old Oakley man this week after police alleged that he torched an unoccupied vehicle and damaged a home with a Molotov cocktail in separate incidents last year in Brentwood. Justin MartinSilva, 25, was arrested at his Gamay Circle home in Oakley earlier this month after Brentwood police detectives served a search warrant related to the cases, police said in a news release this week. Police believe MartinSilva torched an unoccupied vehicle in the area of Viola Court and Wildflower Loop in Brentwood on Nov. 26 and damaged the side yard of a home in the 500 block of Foxglove Court in Brentwood on Dec. 30. “Both incidents involved the same victim (the owner of the car and the house)
Lunger from page 1 Hayward Police Sergeant Scott Lunger Memorial Highway in 2018, and a year later, the City of Brentwood dedicated a street in his honor. “Although he didn’t work in Brentwood, he loved living here and still has friends and family who live here as well,” said Brentwood Mayor Joel Bryant in 2019, while then the city’s vice mayor. “Many of us who call
and fire personnel confirmed the fires were a result of arson,” police said in a statement. “Through the course of the investigation, the victim stated he knew the suspect.” Police served a search warrant on a home where MartinSilva lives, in the 1300 block of Gamay Circle in Oakley, on Feb. 3 and subsequently arrested him on several charges, primarily arson and possession of arson material, police said. “Yesterday, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against MartinSilva for arson, possession of arson material, possession of explosive device with intent to injure, and other charges,” police said in a statement. As of Feb. 8, MartinSilva remained in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility with bail set at $625,000.
Brentwood home moved here because it is a family-focused town, and it’s important that we keep it that way. Scott was one of us — an extraordinary person living an ordinary life right here in Brentwood. By naming a street after him, not only do we honor him, but we have a daily reminder every time we drive down that street to try to be a better person, care about others on a greater level, just like Scott did. He is one of our hometown heroes.”

GAMES & PUZZLES Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Chabad of the Delta offers New York-style pop-up deli by Jake Menez Staff Writer
BRENTWOOD The Chabad of the Delta has announced it will host a pop-up Jewish deli on Feb. 17 from 2-6. to raise funds for community events while giving local residents a chance to try authentic New Yorkstyle kosher cuisine.

“At Chabad of the Delta we are always looking for ways to service the community,” Rabbi Peretz Goldshmid said in a press release. “This is a wonderful time to experience kosher.” The menu for the pop-up will feature deli staples such as pastrami, corned beef sandwiches and matzo-ball chicken soup, according to the menu included with the

his own experiences as a card counter in the ‘80s in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe to inform his writing. For his own novel, Brandon Lawson, 24, of Antioch looks to the future rather than the past in order to craft a dystopian science-fiction story for young adults. His novel, “Nova’s Blade,” was released on Feb. 1 under the pseudonym Will Scifi. “I love sci-fi because you’re able to go as far as you want with it,” Lawson said of his writing. “If you were writing a nonfiction story or a story that took place in the real world, you can’t have the person flying and being bulletproof. But with science fiction, your imagination is limitless.” Lawson’s experiences with major publishers were

virus.” After reaching a high on Jan. 9 of 2,835 new cases per day, Contra Costa’s case rates have rapidly declined to a seven-day average of 958 on Feb. 1 and continue to drop, officials said. Meanwhile, hospitalizations, a lagging indicator of disease, have begun to drop and never exceeded local capacity during this latest surge because of the county’s overall high rates of vaccinations (80%) and boosters (49% of those eligible), officials said. Contra Costa’s universal mask mandate has been in place since Aug. 2 when cases from the Delta variant began climbing. “We are able to take this next major step of removing the universal indoor mask requirement because we have laid a strong foundation in good public health protections – especially vaccines and boosters – and know we can reduce severe illness, hospitalizations and deaths,” said Dr. Ori Tzvieli, health officer for Contra Costa County. Bay Area health officers, in align-
press release, as well as knishes, babkas and other offerings. The deli, which will be at 1062 Somersby Way in Brentwood, will offer both outdoor dining and delivery options, but orders must be placed in advance by Feb. 15. The Chabad of the Delta is one of more than 3,000 branches of an interna-
similar to Boltz’s, with many rejecting his work until he made the choice to publish his poems and stories himself. “At the time, I figured my writing was terrible, so I might as well push it out myself with no path in sight,” Lawson said. “Over the years, I realize my writing wasn’t terrible, and rejection is part of the process.” While self-publishing provided an easier path to getting a story published, the authors acknowledge the unique challenges of the decision. The odds against making a successful career in self publishing are greater than being traditionally published, Boltz said in an email. Traditionally, a publisher acts as a middleman between an author and their audience, helping to promote
ment with the state, continue to strongly recommend masks be used as an effective tool to prevent the spread of the virus especially when case rates are high, or when additional personal protection is needed, officials said. The highly contagious Omicron variant brought on a new stage of the pandemic with a high number of new infections, but significantly fewer cases of life-threatening illnesses, especially for those who are vaccinated and boosted, officials said. While the health officers say relaxing indoor masking requirements is part of a shift toward a “new normal” of living with the disease, the officers recognize that essential workers and communities of color continue to be highly impacted by COVID-19 and will need additional support to limit widening health disparities, they said. Changes to health orders and recommendations may be updated as the health officers follow the science and the data to evaluate whether additional protective measures may be needed as the virus evolves
tional organization involved with Jewish education and outreach programs. the book, according to Lawson. In order to generate a similar interest, a self-published author must also selfpromote. “Since there’s no middle man, you have no help in getting your work out there to the fans,” he said. “But recently, the tactics I’ve been using are the same tactics that publishers do for their authors: contacting the press, bookstagrammers, booktubers, giving out arcs, virtual book tours, giveaways, etc.” Lawson’s new sci-fi novel, “Nova’s Blade,” is available now through Amazon, while the first two books in Boltz’s Trenton Russell series of mystery thrillers, “The Blackjack Player” and “Dreams of Smoke,” are available from several retailers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
and if future surges occur, they said. The health officers encourage everyone to continue to choose layered prevention strategies, including: • wearing well-fitted masks (N95 or double layer cloth over surgical are best) • staying home and testing when symptomatic • testing before gatherings • improving indoor ventilation in situations where these strategies can add protection for themselves and others. “Staying up to date on vaccinations, meaning primary series and boosters when eligible, remains the most important way to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death,” the officers said in a statement. By aligning with the state mask rules, the participating Bay Area counties will not need to meet previously established criteria for lifting local masking orders, which were devised at a different point in the pandemic. The state continues to require face
masks in K-12 school settings but has indicated adjustments to the state’s policies will be publicized in the coming weeks. In the meantime, there is work to be done in closing the remaining gaps in vaccinations and boosters among children with a particular focus on equity gaps among those most affected, officials said. For early education programs, such as preschool and childcare settings, the state continues to require masks for children older than 2. Vaccinations for children younger than 5 are undergoing federal review. Workplaces will continue to follow the COVID-19 prevention standards set by CalOSHA. “Some people may understandably feel anxious about these changes to masking requirements in the county,” the officers said in a statement. “People can continue to choose to wear face coverings around others whether it’s mandated or not and should respect people’s choices around their health. Community members who are vaccinated and choose not to mask should respect the choices of those who continue to mask.”
