BRENTWOOD The City of Brentwood recently named two new members to its five-member art commission, which plays an advisory role to the city council and strives to enrich the cultural landscape of Brentwood. Frank Littman, painter and president, Art Guild of the Delta Littman is one of two new faces recently named to the City of Brentwood Arts Commission. He has been part of the Art Guild of the Delta for three years and is currently serving as its president. “I started in art about 20 years ago,” Littman said. “My mother was an artist, and when she passed away, I inherited her art supplies, so I started painting.” Littman began taking art classes but didn’t pursue painting seriously until his retirement. He said he is mostly self-taught and usually paints landscapes in acrylics. His art has been displayed at the Delta Gallery of the Arts over the past few years and has met with some commercial success. “I do it for fun and keep trying to learn new things,” said Littman of his painting. “I have always loved art ... it was just something I wanted to learn more about and try. It’s part talent and part training, and it’s a good way to reduce stress.” As part of the arts commission, Littman hopes to give back to his community and influence deci-

OAKLEY The City of Oakley is one of the top 25 safest in the state, according to one recent crime rates study. Safewise, an independent security solutions review organization, ranked Oakley the state’s 21st safest — ahead of all other East County areas — when analyzing the latest available uniform FBI-reported violent and property crime rates per 1,000 people in each city from 2019. The city was ranked 16th safest in last year’s study. Brentwood came in 92nd and Antioch 200th out of the 229 cities in the latest analysis, which

Oakley Police Chief Dean Capelletti weighted violent and property crimes equally and explored only cities with populations above the state’s median-sized city, to reduce skewed data and results. New director to guide Delta Gallery by Jenna Hards
Gallery Director Robert Ashin is photographed in the Delta Gallery in Brentwood Calif., Tuesday, March 30, 2021. Ashin was recently named to the position and replaces former director Rosalinda Grejsen.
Correspondent
The new Delta Gallery director Robert Ashin is looking forward to fully reopening the gallery and is making plans for art classes and new shows. Ashin has been a part of the gallery management team for many years. All efforts to run the gallery are voluntary, and Ashin will work with a team of newer and continuing members as the gallery hopes to open up community art shows and installations and continue with instruction and classes. Like many businesses, the Delta Gallery has seen a decrease in visitors during the pandemic, but Ashin plans to fully open while also making sure that visitors and artists feel safe. In particular, Ashin wants to focus on the

crafting and art classes offered at the gallery that have been socially distanced during the pandemic. “It shows that we can operate, that we can have classes and functions and people
don’t need to worry about health and safety issues,” he said. But classes are not the only thing Ashin wants to bring back. He is also planning ahead for the gallery’s quarterly shows.

“On the eighth of next month, we’re going to open our second-quarter show,” Ashin said. “We have about five weeks to go, but we’ll put out a call to artists and we will see who wants to participate.” Mary Lamb, a current manager at the Delta Gallery, is also excited for what’s to come. “We’re looking forward to being able to open for more hours and more days than we are right now, and continuing to build on our classroom availability,” Lamb said. Lamb also expressed a lot of trust in Ashin as the new director. She cited his extensive professional background as an artist and how invaluable his help with financial paperwork has been to the gallery. “From the very beginning he’s shown a real interest in helping the group grow, and I think he’ll bring a lot of new ideas to the gallery,” Lamb said. The growing vaccination rates and declining COVID-19 cases have Ashin and the rest of the gallery team feeling hopeful for the upcoming year. “I’m hoping by the end of summer or the latter part of fall we can start having inperson receptions again,” Ashin said. “We might have a theme and call it ‘Celebration,’ and perhaps we can have some pieces here that capture that feeling.” For more information on the gallery, visit www.deltagallery.com. Head-on collision injures one in Byron by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer
BYRON A head-on collision on Byron Highway last week sent one driver to the hospital, knocked down power lines and closed the roadway to traffic for several hours. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Nissan sedan crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a big rig at approximately 3:35 a.m. The collision occurred just north of Bruns Road in Byron. The driver of the Nissan was flown to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with major injuries, said CHP Officer Brandon Correia. The big rig overturned and knocked down a utility pole, leaving power wires strewn across the highway. The driver was able to extricate himself from the wreck and was re-

leased after he was examined by paramedics. The downed power lines complicated the incident for first responders. Paramedics and units from the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District could not reach the driver of the Nissan, as the live wires cut off access to the vehicle. Helicopters from CHP and the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District were dispatched to the incident. They both landed south of the scene and were able to reach, extricate and evaluate the driver before transporting him to the hospital. The driver’s current condition is not known. Units from the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority were also dispatched to the scene from Tracy to assist with the rescue. Two additional drivers suffered only minor injuries. They were both evaluated and released by paramedics on the scene.
OAKLEY A driver collided with two children operating a motorized toy car in Oakley, sending both children to the hospital on Friday afternoon, April 2. One victim, a 4-year-old girl, was taken by helicopter to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland after suffering an injury to her head. The second victim, a 6-yearold girl, was transported by ground to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch. An East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) incident report stated that her injuries were minor. The incident was reported just before 4 p.m. on the 1300 block of Portsmouth Drive. An ECCFPD spokesperson stated that the driver of the car that struck the children was traveling around 10 mph at the time of the accident. The driver remained on scene and was cooperating with the Oakley Police Department’s (OPD) investigation. ECCFPD Engine 53 responded to the accident scene, while the crew
from Engine 52 and a battalion chief established a helicopter landing zone on a softball field in Nunn-Wilson Family Park on Oxford Drive. The OPD investigation into the accident is continuing. – Melissa van Ruiten contributed to this story. To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress. net/multimedia/slideshows

Both Rodney and Tim Gallegos are elected and sworn officers of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 202 and have held their positions since the group’s charter in 2019. Heritage High School student off to prestigious Ivy League university While many seniors will await acceptance letters from colleges this spring, Nikhil Trehan of Heritage’s class of 2021 will not. Nikhil committed to prestigious Brown University in Rhode Island under Early Decision in the Winter, making both his teachers and family proud. Trehan’s acceptance to Brown is the first Ivy League acceptance at Brentwood this year. Trehan plans to major in applied mathematics. Brown University is one of the eight institutions in the elite Ivy League and has a 7.1% acceptance rate. “I really love Brown’s emphasis on undergraduate learning and their open curriculum,” Trehan responded when asked “Why Brown?” “I loved the vibes I got when I visited the campus my junior year.” In fact, he was so intrigued by the school that Brown was the only Ivy school he applied to.
“I was completely surprised when I got in,” Trehan said. However, his acceptance was hardly arbitrary. Trehan excels in academics, ranking second in his class with a cumulative GPA of 4.43. In addition, he enrolled in college-level courses outside of school and plays on Heritage’s varsity tennis team. He is also a member of the Physics Club and the National Honor Society. When asked what inspires him, Nikhil explained, “Learning excites me, so that’s what drives me to pursue higher education.” Trehan offered some advice to underclassmen: “If you have an interest, keep an eye out for opportunities to pursue it outside of school. Then, your interest might turn into a passion. Colleges like passion more than anything.” – Ysaach Habon Heritage High School

Prop 19 just went into effect on April 1st. This gives some homeowners more options in regards to “property tax portability.” Prior to the passage of Prop 19, you could only transfer your tax base one time if you moved within the same county, or if you moved to certain counties in California. There were several other restrictions in that you had to be at least 55 years old and you had to buy at the same or lower price. Prop 19 opens this up tremendously. Here are some of the highlights: It enlarges the people who qualify for this to those who are severely disabled or negatively impacted by natural disasters, as well as those who are 55 and older. It still must be your primary residence but now you can do this up to three times. You can also buy a more expensive home, although there is an adjustment made for that. The adjustment adds the difference in sales price of the new versus the old to the old tax basis. So if your old home basis was $400K and you are selling it for $600K and buying a new

house for $700K, then the $100K increase is added to your old basis for a new value of $500K. So it’s a way to blend the values so you are paying more than before, but still less than before Prop 19 passed. The other bit of good news is that if you already transferred your tax basis under the old rules (Prop 60 and 90) you will still have THREE chances to use Prop 19. There were many people 55 and older who felt “trapped” in their homes and didn’t want to sell them and give up their low tax bill. Hopefully this will help solve that issue for them! New winery will pour into Brentwood Local wine lovers will have another reason to celebrate later this year as a new winery joins the ever-growing list of selections in Brentwood. Serendipity Cellars, located on Chestnut Street just outside of downtown, plans to open this summer as a “boutique winery experience,” featuring six varietals of fantastic wine. Owners Bryan and Michele Lucay ended up in the winemaking game wholly by accident, they admit. By trade, they work in construction, having established their own contracting company — GroundWorks Inc. — back in 2002. Beyond that, they were never wine drinkers, preferring the taste of tequila. But all that changed in 2004 when they took on a job engraving concrete at Ceja Vineyards in Napa, where the winemaker insisted on offering them wine as thanks.
able to create plants, such as their sangiovese and vermentino vines, that are clones of plants that have been producing excellent grapes since 2010. Cloning has also allowed them to engineer plants that are similar to existing ones, such as their sauvignon blanc and chardonnay vines, which are clones of the popular wente varietals. When Serendipity Cellars opens this summer, there will be more on offer than just wine. The back area of the property will be a family-friendly hangout where, except on special occasions, even children will be welcome to play lawn games and enjoy the rustic ambience of the winery, while food will be served from a rotating selection of local food trucks. The winery also has indoor seating that will be kept 21 and over, to create a space for those who prefer a more adult-oriented setting. The winery will offer wine flights, tours of the vineyards and other special events. For more information, visit https:// www.facebook.com/serendipitycellars/.

pare for the grand opening of Serendipity Cellars this summer. The property, which spans about fifteen acres, was originally used for growing green beans, until the Lucays took it over in August 2018. Those vegetables have since been replaced by six types of wine grapes, to make seven varietals of wine: chardonnay, cabernet, sauvignon blanc, vermentino and tempranillo, along with sangiovese, which lends itself to both the classic red wine and a sangiovese rosé. Although the property may be new, the Lucays have the interesting distinction of using older vines, thanks to the technique of cloning. In viticulture, cloning is the process of pruning vines from older plants, often those that have proven their ability to grow superior grapes, and grafting those vines onto existing rootstock. The result is essentially an older vine, despite a younger root having been planted. Using this method, the Lucays have been

The pair politely refused at first, saying they didn’t care for wine, but the veteran winemaker told them, “It’s not that you don’t like wine — you just haven’t found a wine you like.” With that, he once again offered each of them a glass, and the rest is history. “That experience is really what started us on this journey,” Michele said. “We had sent out 2,500 flyers to wineries in Napa to show them this engraved concrete idea we were working on. Out of those 2,500, the one winery to reach out was Ceja — that’s the serendipity we named the winery after.” Soon after discovering a passion for drinking wine, the Lucays jumped headfirst into making it when their new friend at Ceja called and asked if they would like 250 mourvèdre grape vines. Bryan, always eager to learn something new in the most hands-on way possible, quickly accepted. That was twelve years ago. Today, Michele and Bryan are coming into their own as winemakers as they pre-

MIKE’S ESTATE PLANNING MINUTE By Michael J. Amthor, Esq.
CONSIDERING DIVORCE? REVIEW YOUR ESTATE PLAN! At a minimum, it takes at least six months for a divorce to be completed. Divorces routinely last a year or longer. What do you do regarding your estate plan before, during and after divorce? Before filing for divorce, you should always review your estate planning documents and review what happens to assets when you die. You should also review your power of attorney and health care directive. Now that you are contemplating divorce, do you still want your spouse managing your finances if you unable? Do you want your spouse making health care decisions if you are unable to make your own decisions? In other words, do you really want your estranged spouse having the power to “pull the plug” or make other important health care decisions? Filing for divorce does not prevent these documents from taking effect. They must be formally revoked and new documents prepared. Once a divorce case has been filed, your ability to change or revoke a trust is limited. Neither party is allowed to change beneficiaries on life insurance, retirement accounts or pensions
while the case is pending. If your will names your spouse as the beneficiary of your assets, upon death those assets go to the spouse you were in the process of divorcing. Similarly, if your spouse is named as beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance, your estranged spouse (not your children) receives those funds if you die while your divorce is pending. Since this is something that cannot be changed once a case has been filed, it is important to make these changes prior to filing for divorce. Finally, once the divorce is final, you must revisit your estate plan and make a new plan. If your children are under 21, make sure their assets are held in trust. Otherwise, your ex spouse will have control over funds earmarked for your children. Can you trust your ex with assets you wanted to go to your children? If not, it is vitally important to see me and make sure your post-divorce estate plan is set up properly. If you have questions on this or any other estate planning topic, call me at (925) 516-4888. Wildflowers abloom in East Bay locations This year’s wildflower season is well underway, and while the displays aren’t as spectacular as those of some past years, there’s still plenty to see. Go on a weekday if you can arrange it, as parks tend to be very crowded on weekends. I haven’t visited all the parks yet, but here are some suggestions for wildflower viewing: At Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Antioch, walk the Chaparral Loop or Manhattan Canyon Trails. The soils there favor shooting stars, buttercups, blue dicks, and paintbrushes, among other wildflower varieties. Black Diamond Mines is at the end of Somersville Road, 3½ miles south of Highway 4. There’s a parking fee of $5 per vehicle when the kiosk is staffed. Farther afield, check out Morgan Territory Regional Preserve on Morgan Territory Road, about nine miles south of Marsh Creek Road near Clayton. Sunol Regional Wilderness in southern Alameda County is a good bet. Walk Camp Ohlone Road to Little Yosemite, climb a short distance on Cerro Este Road, then return to the start on the Canyon View Trail. Sunol is at the end of Geary Road off Calaveras Road south of I-680. There’s a parking fee of $5 per vehicle and Sunol is alcohol-free. Also off of I-680, Vargas Plateau has great displays of poppies and red maids right now. Take the Vargas Road exit from I-680 between Sunol and Fremont and drive up the hill. Be aware that there are only about 25 parking spaces (including two for the disabled) at the trailhead, and there’s no parking at all on Vargas Road, so try to visit the trail on off-peak hours. Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park in Pleasanton is another possibility. Start at the Foothill Staging Area on Foothill Road south
of Castlewood Drive. Head up the Woodland or Oak Tree Trails to the top of the ridge. From there you can go on the Ridgeline or Thermalito Trails for wildflowers and panoramic views. One of the best places for wildflowers in the regional parks is Rocky Ridge on the Ohlone Wilderness Trail, starting at Del Valle Regional Park south of Livermore. It’s a two-mile climb to the ridge from Del Valle’s Lichen Bark picnic area, which pays off with beautiful wildflowers on the rocky soil of the ridge. Sometimes the goldfields are spectacular. Del Valle is at the end of Del Valle Road off Mines Road about nine miles south of I-580. There’s a parking fee of $5 per vehicle, and the Ohlone Wilderness Trail requires a $2 permit good for a year from the date of purchase, available at the entrance kiosk. Farther north in the park district, check out the Rocky Ridge View Trail or Las Trampas Ridge Trail at Las Trampas Regional Wilderness in San Ramon. Another good park for wildflowers is Sobrante Ridge Regional Preserve off Castro Ranch Road in El Sobrante. Hillside poppies are the attraction at Briones Regional Park. Walk up Old Briones Road from the Bear Creek staging area on Bear Valley Road about five miles east of Camino Pablo Road in Orinda. Drive carefully; the road is narrow and winding. Once there, take the Volvon and Prairie Falcon Trails for wildflowers and great views of Mt. Diablo. This is just a partial list. Maps with detailed driving directions to all these regional parks and more are available on the park district website, www.ebparks.org. — Submitted by Ned MacKay, East Bay Regional Park District

OBITUARIES Christopher Addison Robert “Gonzo” Gonzales
December 12, 1986 - March 15, 2021 Christopher was a thoroughly talented chef, a graduate of the Diablo Valley College (DVC) Culinary school where he earned certificates in Restaurant & Hotel Management, Baking & Pastry and Culinary Arts. He began his culinary journey at Boardwalk Grill in Discovery Bay, moving on to Shutters Brasserie in Brentwood. The next step on his journey was to return to his childhood home in Sacramento, where he lived out the rest of his life. He joined fellow DVC alum Brandon at Rio City Cafe. Other stops included Broderick’s and Ten22 in Old Sacramento. When Ten22 announced its imminent closure, Christopher was recruited within hours by Chef Q to join him in opening Echo & Rig. His last place of employment was Casablanca Cafe, where he was recruited by DVC alum Derek to assist in its opening. Christopher held many titles throughout his career, including Executive Chef and Sous Chef. His real value was as right-hand man to Executive Chefs who could deploy him where he was needed. During his career, he was honored to represent Rio City Cafe while working his culinary magic on the local TV show “Good Day Sacramento”. At Echo & Rig, he cooked for Vlade Divac, Patrick Willis, LeBron James, James Harden and Neil Patrick Harris, among others. Christopher was inspired by Anthony Bourdain, whose book “Kitchen Confidential” was his bible. He would cook delicious homecooked meals for his brother Alex and cousin Andria in the home they shared and enjoyed cooking for his entire family during the holidays. Christopher had an infectious smile and laugh and those lucky enough to meet him him became his best friends
Richard Grijalva
for life. He had a kind word for everyone whom he met. After the end of his restaurant shift, he would often pass out food to homeless folks whom he encountered on his way home. He loved children and animals, especially his cousin Andria’s puppy Bella, whom he would often babysit. He was an avid fan of the SF Giants, the SF 49ers and the Sacramento Kings. He loved traveling with his parents and enjoyed trips to Colorado and Saint Maarten. He will be remembered not only for his passion for his craft but most importantly, his kindness and generous nature towards all. A celebration of Christopher’s Life will be held on Friday April 9, 2021 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church on 2800 Camino Diablo in Byron. Viewing and visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by mass at 2:00 PM led by Father Ron. Immediately following, we will gather in St. Anne’s garden for food and a celebration of Christopher’s life. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Delta Christian Community Food Pantry (www.deltafoodpantry.com) or Toys for Tots (www.toysfortots.org).
November 18, 1939 - April 9, 2020 Today marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of Richard Grijalva, whom we miss dearly, a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He passed away on April 9, 2020. Richard was 80 years old when he passed. He grew up in Brentwood and attended Liberty High School. He joined the Air Force in 1958 before moving to Antioch with his former wife, Lilly. While in Antioch, he opened his own real estate business, where he was a broker for over 40 years. He loved his job and helping all his clients. Richard loved life and spending time with his family and close friends. He enjoyed the outdoors, planting in his backyard, listening to music, and having barbecues at his home for his family. Richard loved to travel to Mazatlán and Monterey, scuba dive in Bodega Bay, and watch football on Sundays. He valued giving back to his community and donated annually to organizations such as the Veterans Association, the American Cancer Society, and the Boys and Girls Club.
His big heart and warm hugs will be missed by those who knew him. He is survived by his daughters, Sabrina Brookshire (Steven), Denise Lloyd (Mark), and Nicole Minero (Alfonso), grandchildren Alexis Muela (Jesus), Colton Powell, Ricky, Nicholas, Rachel Lloyd, Alfonso III, and Antonio Minero, and great grandchildren, Gabriella, Ava, and Jesus Muela III. The time and place of the celebration of Richard’s life will be determined later in 2021.

Douglas Valley, aged 83, passed away on March 2nd, 2021. Born and raised in Greendale, Wisconsin, he was a Navy veteran and an IBEW Union electrician. He married Lois Nennig and together they raised four children. In 1983, the family moved to California and ultimately settled in Brentwood. A diehard Green Bay Packers fan, he could always be spotted wearing his Packers gear. Douglas was also active with the Knights of Columbus at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Douglas was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Wilma, and his brother, Richard. He is survived by his wife, Lois, his four children, Karen, Maureen, Ann Marie and David, his seven grandchildren, his brother, Donald, and of course by his beloved dog, Hazel. Student empowerment : A battle for visibility Education has been at the forefront of countless political and sociocultural movements. With an increasing emphasis on education in America, students in secondary institutions have been placed under the limelight. While more students flood into classrooms, uest their views begin comment to be shaped through school culture and policy. Why then, is modern education administration ignoring students’ opinions and experiences? Students’ endurance of adversity in education is not new. Additionally, the way administrators handle the adversity is a repeat of ignorance. In the past few years, there have been countless testimonies within school districts that detail how acts of sexual assault, harassment, and hate speech have been purposefully minimized by school administration. As administrators continue to silence students, the school landscape has transformed into a threatening, formidable environment, breeding students who are afraid to speak out
G
against their challenges for fear of being misheard and condemned. An almost ironic reality is now occurring: students have no power to choose school policy or ability to have their voices heard in an institution meant to foster their growth and education. Current administration feeds into this problem by ignoring students’ claims, thus translating into a bleak picture for students. For significant change to occur, a shift in attitude towards students needs to take place. Rather than the performative, ineffective policy in place currently, administration needs to not only respect the students’ voices, but employ them in their strides for reform. While student representation in school districts may seem like a foreign concept, realistic ways to give solutions
a platform exist. One method that has been proposed by several youth-led organizations is student representatives on the district board. Student representatives who have first-hand experience with high school life would be able to inform administration about the issues of their peers for more purposeful policy. Increased resources for students to report incidents is also a fundamental aspect to student visibility. As more students feel safer to speak out against district policy, a tonal shift towards student-oriented rather than administrative or monetary issues can occur. These are only a few examples out of many that school districts can utilize to alleviate this problem. If school administration begins not only recognizing, but working to
amend student struggles, a brighter step to education can begin. Educational institutions have the ability to be a place of growth and connection. It is time that educators foster the necessary growth through student-led initiatives. Holding school boards accountable is a step towards student visibility. Tackling the root cause of student unsafety in culture and politics is another factor towards mobilizing students’ opinion in education. It is the administration’s turn to create an outlet for their student body. Liberty, Heritage XC teams win league crowns by Michael Dixon Correspondent
Cross-country runners from around the Bay Valley Athletic League gathered on Wednesday, March 31, to participate in the BVAL Cross Country Championships for the “2020” season. When all was said and done, the two Brentwood schools — Liberty and Heritage — reigned supreme. The Patriots were victorious in the boys competition, finishing with 37 points. That was five better than the 42 from the Lions. Things were flipped in the girls competition, where Liberty won, finishing with 23 points, and Heritage was second with 38. “Considering the amount of injuries we had top to bottom this season, I felt that our teams performed admirably,” Liberty coach Eric Morford said. “Our girls put together a solid all-around performance to hold off a strong Heritage Girls squad.” Depth was key for the Patriots in the boys race. Junior Dominic DiPiero [17:09.96] finished fourth and was the only Heritage boy in the top 5. But what the Patriots lacked in top-5 finishes, they more than made up for with the rest of the top 10. Senior Joesiah Kriston [17:19.94] placed sixth, while teammates sophomore Jordan Maldonado [17:36.09], junior James Woolery [17:44.43] and senior Vincent Ceja [17:45.83] finished eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively. Liberty senior Keene Sample [16:13.76] crossed the finish line first, with sophomore Matias Rogers [16:49.01] in third. Deer Valley senior Hunter Phillips [16:31.27] finished between them. “Even though our boys team came up

just short of the Heritage boys, I’m proud that they believed in their success and put themselves in a position to battle at the mile point of the race,” Morford said. The Lions coach also credited Liberty sophomore, Dylan Baptista. Baptista [18:28.18] finished 15th. His performance wasn’t exactly what he had in mind, which, Morford noted, shows how much better he’s gotten. “He’s had far better races than he showed at the championships, but I’m proud of the amazing season he had,” Morford said. “To think that the way Dylan performed was now what we consider a ‘bad day’ is crazy. He has improved more rapidly than any athlete I’ve ever coached because of his passion and dedication to his improvement.” The girls race was similar to the boys race, in that a runner from the second place
team finished first individually. Patriot senior Renny Buchanan was the top girl, finishing in 20:35.12. Behind her were a trio of Lions: senior Sidney Jenks [20.45.35], sophomore Rylee Guinn [20:57.93] and junior Kiran McWilliams [21:10.74]. Heritage junior Sabrina Rogers [21:26.04] rounded out the top 5. In the boys race, Deer Valley [86], Freedom [100] and Antioch [107] rounded out the team scores. In addition to Phillips, Wolverine junior Daniel Gober also finished high, placing fifth [17:15.30]. Junior Wyatt Erickson [17:34.59] was the top-finishing Falcon, finishing in seventh, while Panther senior Sid Valdez [18:57.86] came in 16th and was the top-finishing Antioch runner. Pittsburg senior Abel Avalos [20:30.07] was 21st. On the girls side, Deer Valley [71 points] was the only team other than Liberty and Heritage with enough runners to field a team.
Senior Ashley Hernandez [22:08.40] led the Wolverines, finishing in tenth place. Pirates sophomore Gabriella Hernandez [21:43.37] finished eighth, the best finisher not from one of the two Brentwood schools. Junior Annalysia Gomez [25:24.44] and senior Marisol Becerra [29:07.62] were the top finishers from Antioch and Freedom, finishing 18th and 25th, respectively. “I’d like to thank the BVAL and LUHSD for putting in the time to the sport of cross country and giving us the opportunity to have a 2020 season,” Morford said. “I loved the way our league handled this season. We have the kindest coaches in our league who look for the best in both their own runners and the competition,” he added. “We especially all wanted to put forth our best to give the Class of 2021 some normalcy in their final year of high school.”
Patriots, Wolverines emerge as tennis champions The Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) tournament was held last week. Singles Heritage’s Erin Crane emerged victorious for the second consecutive league championship tournament. The top-seed Crane bested teammate Nicolette Alexander, the tournament’s second seed 6-4, 6-2, to capture the title. After a first-round bye, Crane was simply dominant throughout the tournament, defeating Freedom’s Nicolette Banuelos 6-0, 6-0; Pittsburg High School’s Akwi Awazi 6-0, 6-0 and teammate Manpreet Kaur, before dispatching Alexander. Freedom’s Madi Suzuki knocked off Kaur 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to capture third place. Doubles Deer Valley High School’s Kayla Autajay and Lauren Sirmons captured the doubles title, defeating the top-seed team of Alyssa Duran and J-na Hereford, from Heritage, 6-3, 6-2 in the final. The Deer Valley duo knocked off the Freedom duo headed up by Roselyn Padilla 6-1,6-0; the Pittsburg High pair of Alyssa Buena and Evelyn Castaneda 6-3,5-7,6-3; and Heritage’s Tammi Sison and Elizabeth Moss, before clinching the title against Duran and Hereford. you trust to act in your best interests and in accordance with your wishes. You can give your agent specific guidance as to what treatments you would or would not want to receive or grant them the authority to act as they think best. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to anticipate incapacity. A sudden illness is just that – sudden, and can render you legally incapacitated. Legal Incapacity means that you can no longer appoint an attorney-in-fact under a power of attorney or an agent under an Advance Health Care Directive. Last month we addressed two documents that are essential components to an effective estate plan (Last Will and Testaments and Living Trusts). Even though these documents are estate planning mainstays, your estate plan is much more than just a last will and testament or living trust. If you are no longer able to manage your business and financial affairs, who will manage them for you? Don’t assume that your spouse or adult children will be able to assist you. In many instances, that is simply not true. While a successor trustee can manage your trust assets, you still need a Durable Power of Attorney for Management of Property and Personal Affairs (a “financial power of attorney”) to manage your other business or financial matters. The term “durable” means that this power survives after you become legally incapacitated. Under an “Advance Health Care Directive,” you appoint someone (your “agent”) who has the ability to make decisions on your behalf in the event that you cannot make them for yourself. This person should be someone

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Notice is hereby given that the Planning Commission of the City of Brentwood will, at 7:00 p.m., or as soon thereafter as the normal course of business permits, on April 20, 2021, hold a public hearing to consider the following: An application for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP 20-009) to operate a K8th grade private school for up to 150 students, known as Saint Anne Village Technical School located at 3341 Walnut Boulevard (APN 010-550-075). Planning staff is recommending denial of the application, which would negate the need for any review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), as CEQA does not apply to projects which a public agency rejects or disapproves, per 14 CCR 15270(a). Applicant: Saint Anne Village, Inc. (Ray Neubauer) Due to COVID-19, and in keeping with the orders of the Contra Costa County Health Officer, the Executive Orders of the Governor, and the Emergency Orders of the Director of Emergency Services for the City of Brentwood, said Planning Commission meeting will be conducted via Zoom; no physical meeting will occur. At the time of the hearing, all interested persons are invited to appear and be heard. Due to the virtual nature of this meeting, you may participate via any of the following options: 1. Zoom: https://www.brentwoodca. gov/planningmeetingonline During the meeting, each period for public comment will be announced, and participants may use the “Raise Hand” feature on Zoom to request to speak. The meeting host will call on you, by name, and enable your video, if desired to be enabled, and microphone when it is your turn to speak. In order to ensure the orderly administration of the meeting using this method, providing your name is encouraged, but is not required. (If you need instructions on how to use this feature, please contact the Planning Administrative Secretary by noon of the meeting date at planning@brentwoodca. gov or 925.516.5433.) 2. Telephone If you wish to comment during the meeting via telephone, you may “raise your hand” virtually on most devices by pressing *9, and you will be called upon when it is your time to speak. After speaking, please press *9 again to remove the “raise your hand” feature. If that feature does not work on your device, please email planning@brentwoodca.gov in advance of the meeting where possible. The request must contain in the subject line “Request to Speak - Agenda Item #” and include name and full phone number that will be used to call in. In order to ensure the orderly administration of the meeting using this method, providing your name is encouraged, but is not required. 3. E-mail While the County Health order to shelter at one’s place of residence is effective, public comments can also be submitted via e-mail to planning@brentwoodca. gov. Any public comments received up until 5pm of the meeting will be: • distributed to the Planning Commission via email, • posted online for public inspection within one day following the meeting with the agenda packet, and • later summarized in the meeting minutes. The City cannot guarantee that its network, website, and/or the Zoom system will be uninterrupted. To ensure that the Planning Commission receives your comments prior to taking action, you are strongly encouraged to submit them in advance of the meeting. As e-mails containing public meeting comments are part of the official record, note that personal contact information (potentially including email addresses) may be published if it is included with your e-mail. Before any court challenge of Planning Commission decisions, you are required to appeal the decision to the City Council no later than the time period provided under the City’s Municipal Code. In addition you may be limited to raising only those issues you or someone else raised at the public hearing described in this notice, or in written correspondence delivered to the Brentwood Planning Commission at, or prior to, the public hearing. Further information may be obtained from Associate Planner Sarah Yuwiler (925) 516-5136 or syuwiler@brentwoodca.gov) in the Community Development Department of the City of Brentwood, 150 City Park Way, Brentwood, California 94513. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call
(714) 730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site - www.servicelinkASAP.com - for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case: 141461. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. can now begin planning for our lives postpandemic. We will need to remain vigilant, and continue the practices that got us here – wearing masks and getting vaccinated – but the light at the end of this tunnel has never been brighter.” The state’s economy will reopen on June 15, provided two conditions are met. The first is that the supply of vaccine coming into the state must be sufficient to inoculate every individual aged 16 and over who wants to be vaccinated. The second is that hospitalization rates must remain stable and low. If both conditions are met, normal activities across the state will be allowed to resume for the first time since March 2020 when the first statewide shelter-in-place order went into place in an attempt to slow the expanding COVID-19 pandemic. All sectors listed in the Blueprint for a Safer Economy will be able to return to usual operations as long as they comply with the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s requirements and with public health policies, such as masking and testing. Large-scale indoor events, like conventions, will be allowed with testing or vaccination verification requirements. “California has made incredible progress controlling the spread of COVID-19 by staying home, masking, and getting vaccines out quickly to Californians in every
Safe
corner of the state, including in those communities hardest hit by this pandemic,” said California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly. “In order to take the next step, we must continue to do our part to keep this momentum moving in the right direction, and that means continuing to wear a mask and ensuring everyone who is eligible gets the vaccine.” The state has seen a successful effort to ramp up vaccination rates, particularly in economically challenged communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. That success led, in part, to the county’s assignment to the lessrestrictive orange tier announced April 6. In March, the California Department of Public Health announced that the criteria for advancing through the Blueprint’s tiers would be eased at two points. The first would occur when the state had administered 2 million vaccine doses to residents in the lowest quartile of the Healthy Places Index (HPI). The HPI provides an overall score and data that predicts life expectancy, and compares community conditions that shape health across the state. The state achieved this mark on March 12, and just 24 days later, the state hit the second goal of administering 4 million doses to those in the lowest HPI quartile, and the Blueprint criteria was once again eased. With the relaxed criteria, Contra Costa County qualified for the move to the orange tier. The move to the orange tier al-

make the city a great place to live.” Brentwood (ranked 92nd) registered a violent crime rate of 2.5 per 1,000 residents, up from 2.4 the previous year, and a property crime rate of 20.4 per 1,000 residents, down from 20.5 in the previous study. The city was ranked the 81st safest in the last study. Antioch (ranked 200th) had a 5.8-per-1,000-resident violent crime rate (up from 5.3 in the previous examination) and a 28.4-per-1,000-resident property crime rate, down from 29.5 in the previous data set. Antioch was ranked the 198th safest in the previous results. Danville, considered the state’s safest city, boasted a 0.5-per-1,000-residents violent crime rate and a 6.6-per-1,000-residents property crime rate.

lows: indoor services at places of worship to accommodate a 50% maximum capacity; restaurants and movie theaters to accommodate a maximum capacity of 50% or 200 people, whichever is fewer; gyms and fitness centers to open at a maximum of 25% capacity indoors; and outdoor sports and live performances to accommodate a maximum of 33% capacity with advance registrations. “This is great news for our community,” said Diane Burgis, chair of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors. “The last few months have been difficult for everyone, and it’s nice to see us make more progress in the fight against COVID.” The county moved from the most restrictive purple tier to the red tier on March 14, and was required to remain in the tier for a minimum of three weeks. The metrics used to determine the county’s tier assignment continued to improve, but at a slower pace than observed earlier in the year. The adjusted case rate that measures the number of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases per day per 100,000 residents hit 5.0, and stopped falling. Before Tuesday’s easing of the criteria, the county needed to achieve a case rate of 4.0 and hold at that rate or below for three weeks before it could be moved to the orange tier. Then, the case rate threshold increased to 6.0 with the updated criteria, allowing the county to advance. “Case rates have plateaued recently,
Oakland was deemed the state’s least safe out of the 229 cities analyzed, registering a 12.7-per-1,000-residents violent crime number and a 64.2-per-1,000-residents property crime mark. Statewide, the violent crime rate sits at 4.4 per 1,000 residents, down slightly from 4.5 in last year’s study. The statewide property crime rate dipped to 23.3, down from 23.8 last year. Rebecca Edwards, Safewise spokesperson, said the organization hopes the accurate representation of a community’s crime sparks conversations about safety. Aside from contextualizing national crime and safety trends, the organization also researches, tests and reviews home safety and smart products. “We started doing it (crime rates studies) because we
thought it would be interesting and people would like to see where their city ranked and everything. But we have gotten a little more serious about it over the years, at least as far as using it as a catalyst to have conversation about what makes us feel safe,” she said. “Does the community have as much crime as we think it does? Does it have more or less? If reality is not matching up with our perceptions, what can we do about that to help improve the safety of ourselves and our neighbors.” Other Bay Area cities ranked in the report include: Foster City at 24, San Ramon at 25, San Marcos at 26, Morgan Hill at 32, Pacifica at 40, Martinez at 45, Livermore at 55, Walnut Creek at 165 and Pittsburg at 192. sions relative to public art. He said he enjoys seeing large murals in other cities and hopes to bring more to large buildings and sound walls in Brentwood. “I’d like to work with the downtown business community to see how we get some more of that,” Littman said. “I’ve been working with a nonprofit organization called Three Thirty Three Arts, and one of the big things they do is promote murals in communities in the East Bay, so I’d like to see some collaboration with a group like that to get more art on public and private property.” Gail Jones, photographer and painter Gail Jones will also be joining Brentwood’s arts commission. A longtime artist, she was an active member of her watercolor club in Sacramento before moving to Brentwood. While watercolors are her preferred medium, she has also worked with acrylic, oil and pastels. “I took art classes in high school and early in college,” said Jones. “When my
which shows we can’t let down our guard even though the pace of vaccinations is accelerating,” said Will Harper, CCHS communications and media relations specialist. “That said, the primary indicators are stable right now and in some cases, such as hospitalizations, are declining.” Harper added that new variants of the novel coronavirus threaten the recent successes in the fight against COVID-19, and the county is in a race to vaccinate residents before a new variant can take hold. The state has committed to reevaluating the progress of the vaccination effort and the continued efficacy of the vaccines against the disease before reopening. “We are still in a pandemic and people should continue to act accordingly,” said CCHS Health Officer Dr. Chris Farnitano. “Keep wearing masks in public and get vaccinated as soon as you can. I still strongly recommend people to avoid most indoor activities with people outside of their own household until they are fully vaccinated.” Since the start of the pandemic, the county has recorded 65,835 COVID-19 infections, and 760 deaths have been attributed to the disease. There are currently 35 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the county, the lowest number since Nov. 2, 2020, and 12 of these COVID-19 patients are occupying intensive care unit beds in the county. daughter graduated from high school, I started taking watercolor classes and photography classes at the local community college where I lived.” Jones has successfully displayed and sold her watercolors, while earning valuable
experience in the business world that she feels will be relevant to her new position. “People should know that I have a strong background in volunteer organizations — 4-H and the watercolor club in Sacramento — and business,” said Jones. “I’m
interested in making sure we make the best choices for the residents in the community, and I want to help our community grow and improve.” Jones said that as part of the arts commission she is interested in supporting the community and exploring additional avenues beyond 2D and 3D art. She hopes to improve advertising to promote permanent art already on display in the community and spread interest in the arts to a new generation. The commission, which also features Rosalinda Grejsen, Cindy Lee and Danny Berns, has set a 2021 goal of focusing on cultivating public art projects that foster authentic representation of diversity, social and cultural justice. Arts Commission meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month, beginning at 7:00 p.m. For more information, visit https://www.brentwoodca.gov/gov/boards/ arts/default.asp.
