Oakley city manager to move on by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

OAKLEY Bryan Montgomery, Oakley’s city manager since 2005, announced that he will be leaving town next month. Montgomery has accepted the city manager position in the City of Indio in Southern California. His final day with Oakley will be May 7. “It is very bittersweet to leave Oakley and the many wonderful friends we have made here,” Montgomery said of the move. “It has been a great place to raise our family and it has been an honor to serve with such outstanding city employees and elected officials, as well as with so many others who help make Oakley such a great community. We will always cherish the memories and friendships and look forward to seeing the entire City of Oakley continue to succeed and flourish.” Before coming to Oakley,

Montgomery served as the city manager in Mesquite, Nevada. He has 28 years of experience in local government management and has worked as an adjunct professor at San Francisco State

University and Los Medanos College. Former Mayor Kevin Romick was a member of the city council when Montgomery was hired by Oakley. He said he

felt then that Montgomery was a good choice, and his service over the past 15 years has justified that choice time and again. see Oakley page 22

County may stiffen firework enforcement by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

REGIONAL Discovery Bay and the rest of unincorporated Contra Costa County may need to keep some new regulations in mind this year as fireworks season approaches. All fireworks are illegal in Contra Costa, and that won’t change, but certain parts of the existing ordinance could be changed so that sheriff ’s deputies and firefighters don’t have to actually see someone lighting a firework in order to issue a citation. “They are trying to change the county ordinance for fire-

works,” said Delta Station Commander Lt. Mark Johnson. “Normally, when we get a call we have to actually catch the person with fireworks, but there are some other cities and counties where, if we can determine the fireworks are coming from a specific house, then we can cite the owner. So the board of supervisors is trying to pass that and change our ordinance to make it easier for us to cite folks who are lighting fireworks off.” Due to long, hot summers that bring with them large expanses of dry grasses, and a recent history riddled with losee Fireworks page 22

Town plans for wastewater project by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

DISCOVERY BAY The Town of Discovery Bay is inching forward in its plans to complete a state-mandated denitrification project for its wastewater treatment systems. The project has been on the town’s horizon for more than a decade, but work will begin this summer and should take two years to complete. It must be done in time for the town’s Federal National Pollutant Discharge Eliminating System (FNPDES) permit to change on Jan. 1, 2024. The permit covers wastewater discharge into Old River; the new permit will require the town to reduce the nitrogen entering the water, hence the title, “denitrification.” “This is a project for treating wastewater,” explained Dina Breitstein, the town’s assistant general manager. “It will make the water discharged back into the Delta cleaner than what’s there now, cleaner than drinking water. It is the cleanest water you can possibly get.” The town has contracted with Herwit Engineering to design the components for the project. As a community services district, the town operates and maintains its own water and wastewater systems, making it responsible for completsee Wastewater page 22

Local college students take on farming by Jenna Hards Correspondent

BRENTWOOD Dejesus Ranch, located off of Sellers Avenue, has been serving the Brentwood community for the last five years as a cherry U-pick location. This past year, the responsibilities and care of the orchard and farm have been passed down to siblings Joseph and Kalee Dutra from their grandparents. The two have been hard at work preparing the farm for this year’s cherry season, while also taking on college full time. While the physical work is plenty, Kalee has also taken on the responsibility of marketing and promoting the ranch on social media in hopes of spreading the word about Dejesus Ranch. As children, the siblings spent much time on their grandparent’s ranch; they would play among the orchard and, when they were old enough, help out with running it during the U-pick season. “We started doing U-pick in 2016 and I

working on creating a sustainable farm. “We try to really think about what we’re putting into the ground, what we’re putting into the trees,” Joseph said. “We’re just trying to give our customers the best product and the best experience that we can.” In addition to the months of preparation and farm work, the Dutra’s are also considering how to keep their customers happy and safe during the continuing pandemic. While the COVID-19 pandemic prevented Dejesus Ranch from allowing people to visit and pick cherries last year, the two have been Photo by Jenna Hards planning how to open up again safely. “We want people to not feel any stress. was wrapping up my eighth-grade year and something that we wanted to do, I went and We’re going to try to do our very best to I would help out on the weekends. Fire spreads, destroys Brentwood home by Tony Kukulich

East Contra Costa Fire Protection District personnel battle a residential fire on the 10000 block of State Route 4 in unincorporated Brentwood, Tuesday, April 20. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Staff Writer

BRENTWOOD A fire that started in an outbuilding and spread to a Brentwood home Tuesday afternoon, April 20, may have been sparked by an electrical problem according to an East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) spokesperson. The blaze destroyed a home on the 10000 block of State Route 4 in unincorporated Brentwood. “The call came in shortly after 4:00,” said Steve Aubert, ECCFPD fire marshal. “Early reports were that the outbuilding was on fire. Some neighbors tried to make entry into the residential side. No fire was reported (in the home) early on. We believe the origin and cause to be electrical in nature.”

A trellis connected the outbuilding to the home, and Aubert added that it was probably how the fire extended from its point of origin to the residence. A black column of smoke from the fire

was visible for several miles from the fire, and the first engine company to arrive reported that the home was already burning. “The wind was a factor,” Aubert said. “It was gusting up to 34 mph. It

was pushing the fire around. The other factor was ventilation. With the house having the front door opened up, it was feeding the fire. The fire kept pushing toward the air source.” The home was unoccupied when the blaze broke out, though there were reports of four cats in the house. As of press time, the cats had not been located. The fire was declared under control at approximately 5:30 p.m., though crews remained on scene for several hours. Traffic on State Route 4 was shut down for approximately two hours, and reopened around 6 p.m. Melissa van Ruiten contributed to this story. East County agencies take back prescriptions REGIONAL In partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice—Drug Enforcement Administration, the Oakley and Brentwood police departments announced on their Facebook pages that they are accepting unused prescription drugs for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event is this Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is intended for prescription drugs and medicines only — no illegal drugs, hypodermic needles or other devices will be accepted. The National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative provides a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. Unused medicines left in home cabinets are highly

susceptible to misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. The Oakley Police Department encourages residents to take advantage of this program. The collection site for Oakley is the police department, at 3231 Main St. The collection site for Brentwood is the police department, at 9100 Brentwood Blvd. The Brentwood Police Department also wants to remind residents that: You do not need to remove labels.

Needles and liquids must be separated from pills and patches. Due to COVID-19 requirements, each location will be practicing social distancing and requests that all participants wear a face covering when placing their medications into the disposal bins. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. For more information, go to the DEA Diversion website, https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/. Brentwood residents may also contact Community Service Officer Michele Keady at the Brentwood Police Department, at mkeady@Brentwoodca.gov or 925-809-7780.

City building inspector halts furnace gas leak OAKLEY A veteran City of Oakley building inspector recently prevented a potential tragedy when he stopped a gas leak on a new wall furnace that had caught fire in an Oakley home. On Wednesday, March 31, Scott Sanders arrived at a home in Oakley at around 10:30 a.m. to do an inspection for a wall furnace that had been installed the day before. When Sanders opened an access panel to make sure it had the gas shut off valve required by code, he saw there was a 3-inch flame coming out of gas tubing in a place it shouldn’t have been. The real pilot light was located about a foot away and was lit. Sanders said the metal was red hot so he couldn’t get his hand in the access panel to shut off the gas; he blew the flame out and let the gas keep leaking for a few minutes until it was cooled down and safe to reach in and shut the gas valve off. “When we do inspections, we make decisions every day that affect people’s lives and property five, 10, 15 years from now by making sure everything is up to code and safe,”said Sanders. “We make serious decisions like this all the time.” It turned out that the gas leak was not a problem from the contractor, but rather a loose gas fitting from the manufacturer. When the pilot was lit, no one noticed the leak.

Scott Sanders, an Oakley building inspector, recently halted a dangerous gas leak. Sanders thinks the gas flashed over from the pilot light, igniting the leak. The contractor immediately showed up to fix the issue. Sanders has been working for the City of Oakley for over 19 years, first as a contractor and now as a valued building inspector. “Scott’s quick thinking and professionalism could very well have saved lives,” said Joshua McMurray, the city’s community and economic development director. “Sometimes, people think that the city’s permit and inspection process is a lot of hassle or red tape, but this is the reason we have such rigorous standards. We are so grateful for Scott’s actions, as everyone in the community should be.”

County offers multiple walk-in vaccine clinics REGIONAL Contra Costa County, in partnership with the California Office of Emergency services, will begin offering walk-in service to people ages 16 and older who live or work in the county at several pop-up sites in the coming weeks. About 500-700 vaccinations a day can be given at each site. The walk-in clinics will be located in areas hardest hit by COVID-19, such as Richmond, the Monument Corridor in Concord and parts of East County. “Places in eastern Contra Costa County, like Antioch, have among the highest COVID case rates but some of the lowest vaccination rates,” said Diane Burgis, chair of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors “That’s why having easily accessible walk-in vaccine clinics like these are so important.” At the same time, the county is also making it easier to schedule vaccine appointments online. People from Contra Costa County can now directly book appointments online at one of the many vaccination sites around the county. Previously, people had to fill out an online form requesting a vaccine appointment, which county staff reviewed manually. “We want everyone to get vaccinated as quickly and conveniently as possible,” said Supervisor John Gioia, whose district in-

cludes Richmond and San Pablo, two of the cities with the highest rates of COVID-19. “ That’s why we are opening walk-in vaccination clinics in our hardest hit communities, especially communities of color. This effort helps us close the vaccine equity gap,” Everyone 16 and older who lives or works in Contra Costa County is eligible for vaccination. People can still also schedule vaccine appointments by calling 833-829-2626. Below are the dates and locations for the walk-in mobile clinics, all are open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Until April 25 • Veterans Memorial Hall: 968 23rd. Youth-led media pioneering the way “Power to the youth.” The phrase may not be widely known, but young journalists have started to pave the way for a new generation’s voices to be heard and amplified. Youth-led magazines are a form of expression that young journalists have gravitated to, hoping that their views will reach the masses. Among the group of journalists in youth-led magazines is Aamir Haq, a class of 2022 Heritage High School student. Haq has written for a diverse range of publications, including the Health Occupations Students of America newsletter and Velvet Fields Magazine, a youthfounded magazine that publishes content aimed at “Gen Z.” By working in an environment with students who have similar interests and ages, Haq has been able to experience journalism from a new perspective. “Instead of being forced to write in order to impress or appeal to older generations, younger people can actually ‘let loose’ and not put a filter on their ideas D MEDAL OL RD

in a youth-led organization,” explained Haq, when asked about his experience in youth-led publications. While Haq has taken a contemporary approach to media, he has still been able to learn vital lessons relevant to traditional journalism. Deadlines, copy editing and collaboration between writers have sparked Haq’s passion for journalism. In youth-led media collectives, Haq has been introduced to formal journalism with creative freedom. “Writing seems more daunting than it actually is. You aren’t tied to a prompt or even a central theme. You can write about whatever you want, from how your day was to how you feel about the world.... Journalism gives you creative freedom, so don’t let your preconceived notions about writing influence what you have to say,” advised Haq about key takeaways he has gained in his journalism career. Haq is not alone in the shift toward a newer approach in journalism. Alyana Santillana hosts the podcast “We Met on

the Web” and writes pop culture, political and creative writing content for the Voices of Gen Z publication, an organization dedicated to amplifying the voices of the youth. Santillana has a unique position in a youth-led organization, with her ability to represent the younger generations’ opinions. “I think my perspective is very generic and is relatively the same as others in our generation. I’ve written about AP classes, college admissions and “Grey’s Anatomy,” which are things that many teenagers are familiar with. However, I think the purpose of being a Gen Z journalist is to amplify my voice. We have these feelings and perspectives, but very few of us are given a platform to share them,” stated Santillana. Though working in a journalismrelated organization provides experience, Santillana views journalism as an outlet for repressed voices. Among youth eager to tackle complex issues, journalism is a medium to share views on a platform cre-

ated by youth and for youth. “Just write! Write for fun, write poetry, write a journal. And if writing isn’t your thing, I still encourage you to express yourself some other way. Our generation in particular hasn’t had it the easiest, we’re always being talked over, and just finding an outlet for your feelings is freeing,” said Santillana, encouraging her peers to find a freeing form of expression. Young journalists such as Santillana and Haq continue to explore uncharted territory with youth-led collectives. By using their passion for writing and expression, young journalists are opening new avenues for youth voices to be heard and prioritized. IT’S DIFFERENT THIS TIME*

There is a classic book written during the subprime mortgage crisis that should be required reading for anyone interested in finances called, “This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly.” They describe many times over the past several centuries where the “experts” explain how the bubble of their day is the “new normal” and that there is nothing to fear because this is a “new plateau” and that “we’ve learned from prior mistakes.” I have started my article with that preface just to let you know that I’m aware of it. Because I’m about to make an argument that our current situation is different than the last real estate bubble that formed. During the 2005-2008 mortgage crisis, people were buying homes they really couldn’t afford through toxic loan products that relied upon shoddy loan underwriting. Lenders literally encouraged buyers to lie about their income. They were actually called, “Liar Loans.” Currently, lenders ARE verifying the buyer’s income. They are also confirming that the buyer can actually afford the payments,

Many buyers are coming in with large down payments, which gives them “skin in the game” where they will think twice about walking away from a property if values dip. The other HUGE difference this time is that rents are so much higher. During the last crisis, a homeowner who was upside-down in their property and paying $5,000 a month could rent a similar home for $1,700 to $2,000 a month. That created an “out” for them. This time, their house payment is often the same or LESS than what rent would be. So there, I’ve said it. This time is different. Prices will stay the same or continue to rise. The boats can congregate in front of the yacht club docks around noon, where Pastor Will Byrns will bless the boats for a safe season. The parade is expected to leave the SJYC docks at 12:30 p.m. for the clockwise cruise around the island, heading under the bridge, then on down Taylor Slough, all the way around the island, past Bethel Harbor Marina, The Rusty Porthole, Russo’s Marina and The Sugar Barge — all good viewing points. The cruise concludes back at the

A few tips for backyard barbecue success learn more by watching tutorials online. Smoked foods take a lot of time to cook, allowing hosts an opportunity to mingle with guests. 3. Keep things simple. Serve only a handful of items to cut down on the amount of preparation required. Two main proteins and maybe three side dishes is adequate. Chips or other pre-made snacks can fit the bill. Condensing options also reduces how much you have to manage. Be sure to have options for those with food allergies or intolerances when planning the menu. 4. Set up clusters of seating. Grouping sets of chairs at tables around the yard encourages guests to mingle. Also, it helps space out people for social distancing and avoids a bottleneck around the food. Make the most of this barbecue season by embracing strategies to be successful hosts and hostesses. – Courtesy of Metro Creative

1. Make food safety a priority. A successful barbecue is one in which everyone goes home sated and stuffed with delicious foods. However, ensuring people do not fall ill also is vital. Keep in mind that the temperature outdoors impacts the rate of spoilage for raw and cooked foods. Always keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold (place items on ice or in coolers). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises moving leftovers indoors promptly and discarding any items that have been sitting outside for longer than two hours at room temperature. Items should be moved indoors or discarded even more quickly in especially hot conditions. 2. Learn how to smoke. Grilling is one skill, and smoking is another. As the popularity of food smokers has increased, prices have come down. Novices can visit barbecue competitions and talk to professionals about their tips for smoking foods, or

When the weather warms up, the opportunities to enjoy more time outdoors increase. For many people that means firing up the grill to cook dinners in the backyard and to host friends and family for outdoor gatherings around the patio. Barbecuing is enjoyed around the world and is especially popular in the United States, where even presidents have touted the virtues of cooking outside. Lyndon B. Johnson, Jimmy Carter and even Ronald Regan hosted barbecues with tasty grilled or smoked food during their terms. Barbecues are especially popular in spring and summer. Memorial Day often marks the unofficial kickoff to the summer barbecue season. After Memorial Day weekend, the smell of barbecue often can be detected on a nightly basis in suburban neighborhoods. Follow these tips to make backyard barbecues even more successful this year:

Vehicle crash causes damage to exterior of Brentwood home by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer

Meet The Principal by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

Feature: Veronica Polk

School: Principal, Old River Elementary While Old River Elementary School students learned from home last fall, a new principal was introduced to the school’s staff. Formerly an assistant principal at Liberty High School, Veronica Polk said she was excited to start a new chapter of her career in the Knightsen Elementary School District. “When the position opened, I fell in love with the culture and the atmosphere in Knightsen,” Polk said. “Being from Chico, it was very reminiscent of how I grew up. Chico has a similar culture to Knightsen, and I felt comfortable with the small town and sense of community and I wanted to be a part of it.” Polk has gathered a range of experience from working with special education students to teaching in the juvenile justice system. Locally, she has also taught at Krey Elementary School, O’Hara Park Middle School and Heritage High School. She has many family members working in education and said she knew she wanted to be a teacher from a young age. She earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and a minor in special education from Chico State, then a master’s degree in special education. During her time at Old River, she has worked with her team to manage distance learning and then bring students back on campus in a hybrid learning schedule. She said she has enjoyed meeting her students for the first time and looks forward to a fresh start in the fall. “It’s difficult coming in mid-year and in the middle of the pandemic, because you don’t get the same organic interaction you would normally get,” she said. “We have all made the best of it, but I am excited to plan for next year and make sure kids are engaged.” Polk lives in Discovery Bay, where she enjoys spoiling her two French bulldogs. In her spare time, she works on her photography skills and planning her next travel destination.

BRENTWOOD Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a vehicle colliding with a home in Brentwood, Friday night, April 16. “We were just in the family room on the couch talking, and we heard a loud boom,” said Michael Shea, a resident of the home on the 800 block of Griffith Lane. “We had the back door open, and smoke started coming in the back. We ran out front, and we saw there were four kids in the car.” None of the four occupants of Acura sedan required hospitalization after the collision, which occurred at approximately 11:25 p.m. Some of the occupants were minors. A spokesperson for the Brentwood Police Department (BPD) said that speed may have been a factor in the accident. “Everybody’s OK,” said Shea. “It scared the dogs pretty bad.” Shea added that there did not appear to be any damage to the interior of the home, but had yet to determine the extent of damage to the exterior.

A vehicle left the road and crashed into a residence on the corner of Central Boulevard and Griffith Lane in Brentwood, late Friday night, April 16. The Brentwood Police Department is investigating the incident. “We’ve seen so many accidents on this corner, but this is the first time it’s actually ended up in the yard, though,” he said.

Bridging the generation gap In the past week or so, Grandpa and I have had the wonderful opportunity to visit with some of our grandchildren; not on a screen, but in the flesh... up close and personal. As the “Flash Dance” song says, “What a Feeling!” One of the best things about spending time with these amazing young people is learning from them, not only Senior about their lives, but also about orner what is “hip” now. Obviously, the word “hip” is not hip, as one of our grandchildren looked at me like the RCA Victor Dog tilting her head in wonder. The kids use lots of verbiage that I don’t understand, but I ask for clarification. There are many abbreviations like IDK for I Marla don’t know and the very popular Luckhardt Lol for laughing out loud; my granddaughter was kind enough to share with me some of the more challenging ones. I guess writing a whole phrase is just way too time consuming for these very busy young people. At least I don’t say “in my day“ and follow up with some kind of “groovy” statement. While I was growing up, my parents were always taking road trips. We enjoyed going to the Pennsylvania Dutch country and visiting the Amish community learning so many things about their simple, yet extraordinary lifestyle. One year we went to Niagara Falls and, although I was barely 4, I can still remember how loud the falls were. I’m so glad that they took my picture, which I’ve kept all these years. Sundays were family day and we would drive in our big pale blue Buick to Brooklyn after we moved to Long Island to maintain our weekend ritual. Every car trip, my dad would tell me he would put the WMCA Good Guys on the radio for a while calling it “your music” and putting a time limit of either 15 minutes or when he couldn’t take the “noise” anymore. That’s what he called rock and roll. He would then switch the station to one that played Sinatra and other crooners that he preferred. He’d refer to that as “real music.” Oddly enough I enjoyed both genres, but as a kid, I needed to stand

C

my ground and never fess up that I loved those songs. The diversity of our different preferences in music actually provided a great education for both of us. My mom liked everything, but when she would sing along, he closed the windows to spare the world from her less than melodious attempt at crooning. Many years later, after I moved out of the house and was on my own, my mom called to let me know she was enjoying a new kind of music called rap! It was in the 80’s and the language was much tamer than now, but I still was intrigued at her newly found musical genre of choice. Trying not to laugh, I asked her why and as always, she brought it down to the basics. She liked it! My dad was not a happy camper, but in his eyes she could do no wrong so he just tuned it out. The rap music- loving portion of her life ended pretty quickly, much to my dad’s relief. There were many differences besides just the kinds of music we preferred, which I suppose was a perfect example of the phrase generation gap. Sometimes I had to explain phrases to my parents just like my grandkids have to explain those abbreviations to me. They never did totally understand my faded bell bottoms or the way I wore my hair... and forget about any boyfriends whose hair was almost as long as mine. Or, in one case, longer! As I got older and spent a lot more time with my parents, I loved hearing stories of their teen years; I realized they were not all that different than me when it came to enjoying their music, hairstyles and clothing that was all the rage then. I stopped thinking that they should change their preferences to accommodate the times and watched their faces as they enjoyed listening to the music that brought them sweet memories. I miss them both dearly but treasure all of those recollections. I swore I would stay cool my entire life and never live in the past. I have given up the long hair and bell bottoms, replacing them with regular jeans and a shortened hairstyle, but I still enjoy my 60’s and 70’s music as those songs remind me of my youth. The kids share their music favorites with me and my mind and my heart are both open, but I still draw the line at rap. Sorry mom!

Art Guild of the Delta calls for artists The Delta Gallery is looking for artists to participate in its second quarter show. Gallery officials say spring is here, the weather is warming up and interest in classes is building; every weekend the Delta Gallery has seen an increase in foot traffic. Gallery officials look forward to having all of their artists back. Whether artists have shown recently or haven’t shown for a while, the gallery invites everyone to participate in the second quarter show which opens May 7. Even if artists are not showing currently, the gallery wants them to come back and visit and enjoy the show. Interested artists are asked to email Robert Ashin (robert@deltagallery.com) as soon as possible to indicate their intent to participate. At that time, please let the gallery know whether a large wall space or a special display/showcase is required. After confirming participation with Ashin, Kitty Carton (kcarton497@att.net) will send artists calendars to help them determine which days they would like to serve as docents. As in the past, there is a minimum of two docent shifts per month for each month of the show. If you are showing, please bring a signed copy of the artist’s agreement and a completed inventory sheet with you when you drop off your artwork. This will help expedite the delivery process. Important dates Sunday, May 2: Due to COVID protocols, delivery will be by appointment only between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Making an appointment is essential not only for dropping off work safely, but for ensuring that the curators will have sufficient time to prepare the gallery and hang the work for the opening. Contact robert@deltagallery.com with questions or concerns. Friday, May 7: Spring Quarter Show opens Friday July 30: Show closes. Artwork can be picked up on Saturday, July 31.

Curious minds want to know - what is a bitcoin? The latest financial rage - you guessed it - is Bitcoin. It is the conversation of young and old, rich and those desiring to get rich. For most of us, it seems Bitcoin has only been around for the last couple of years. But in fact, the ledger start date was Jan. 3, 2009 with founder Satoshi Nakamoto. Nakamoto is the name used as a pseudonym for the person or persons who developed Bitcoin, the Bitcoin white paper and created its implementation. As part of the implementation, Nakamoto also devised the first blockchain database. But like most big discoveries, only the people in the know paid attention - that is until now. Why now? Bitcoin is taking on a fire of its own since multi-billionaires, like Elon Musk, have told users that Bitcoin is a “good thing.” Well respected companies are joining the revolution. But really, what does this mean for me, the common consumer? I decided to reach out to the experts, people who have been sitting and anticipating the Bitcoin boom, to find out. Here is what they have to say.

So what is Bitcoin? Bitcoin Investors: Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency without a central bank or single administrator. It can be sent from user to user on the peerto-peer Bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries. How did you first arrive at investing in Bitcoin? Investors: After much research, it was determined that even a modest investment in cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, can produce huge upside potential - as much as 300 - 2400% Reporter: What does it mean that there is a limited supply of bitcoins?

Bitcoin Investors: There are only 21 million available bitcoins that can be mined. It is finite. Currently there are about 19 million in circulation. This is in contrast to the monetary system we use that is constantly devalued because of continually printing more dollars. This follows the economic rule of supply and demand. Reporter: What does mining mean? Bitcoin Investors: Mining is verifying transactions and recording it in a public distributed ledger called a blocchain. In exchange, miners are paid in bitcoin. Reporter: What have been the trends of Bitcoin? Bitcoin Investors: Bitcoin has been a roller coaster ride. Miners and investors have seen the highs and lows with the hopes that it will explode in the next year. This is common for a new asset class. The “S” curve shows that it takes 10 years for 10% of the population to adapt to new technology. In this decade, 90% of the population will adopt the technology. Just like the iPhone and electric cars, Bitcoin is there! Reporter: Have we ever had in our economy anything that we can compare Bitcoin to? Bitcoin Investors: Nothing compares to Bitcoin. This is one-of-a-kind gamechanger due to its scarcity and peer-topeer exchange from anywhere around the world.

Reporter: How safe is Bitcoin? Bitcoin Investors: Perfect question. This is the other key game changer about Bitcoin. It is totally secure. The difference is, as we have seen numerous companies being hacked in the last few years and the hackers stealing our personal information, Bitcoin is spread among hundreds of computers securing it from hackers. It would be near impossible to hack all the hundreds of computers at the same time to achieve the information to extort personal information from the network. Reporter: What does the IRS think of Bitcoin? Bitcoin Investors: The IRS does acknowledge Bitcoin as property and therefore it is taxable. Reporter: How do I invest in Bitcoin? Bitcoin Investors: You may need to first sign up with an exchange such as Coinbase or a Wallet such as ABRA. Through your regular brokerage account there are a couple of on-ramps to buy Bitcoin. But like any major investments, the smart investor does their own research and their own homework before investing in anything. Reporter: Can I get out at any time? Bitcoin Investors: Yes, you can, but if you’re not invested for at least a year you will have to pay capital gain taxes. Long term investment provides a better tax advantage. Bitcoin is the new future. Do your own research and talk to your individual money managers. I for one, never put all my eggs in one basket. But the financial opportunities that Bitcoin opens may be on the horizon of investing and it may fit well into your retirement portfolio. Do your homework...happy investing. Liberty defeats Heritage in Brentwood Bowl by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Liberty quarterback Nate Bell made sure his final play of the season against Heritage was also his best. The sophomore signal-caller wiggled through the Heritage defense and into the open field for a 67-yard touchdown — his third rushing score of the game — with just over a minute to play, to ice the Lions’ 30-21 win over crosstown rival Heritage in the Brentwood Bowl. The sensational run capped off Bell’s impressive performance that saw him account for all four Liberty scores — three on the ground and one through the air. He finished with 16 carries for 138 yards and completed 14 of 20 passes for 195 yards, helping Liberty defeat Heritage for the fifth consecutive time. “He came out here and lit it up,” said Liberty head coach Matt Hoefs. Liberty’s offense was efficient all night, racking up 517 total yards in the game, but the Lions (4-1) needed a couple of extra-special fourth-quarter efforts to squeak out the victory over the gutsy 4-2 Patriots. Bell’s statement scamper came two plays after Lions running back Jaylin Thompson (14 carries for 86 yards in the game) rumbled forward to extend the drive on fourth-and-1, with the Lions clinging to a 23-21 lead. Just minutes earlier, Liberty sophomore Tashi Dorje’s 42-yard field goal — admittedly beyond his normal

range — extended the Lions’ lead to 23-14 midway through the fourth quarter. “It was lot of excitement,” Dorje said of the kick. “I just had a lot of confidence.” The Patriots, who lost the last Brentwood Bowl 50-6 in 2019, did keep the pressure on and the score close throughout, thanks in large part to sophomore star Devon Rivers, who finished with 29 carries for 175 yards and two of Heritage’s three touchdowns. The two teams played to 7-7 and 14-

all scores before Liberty took the lead for good on Bell’s second touchdown of the game, a 3-yard scamper to put Liberty on top 20-14 midway through the third quarter. Dorje’s 42-yard field goal extended the Liberty lead to 23-14, but the Patriots immediately responded with a 76-yard drive that culminated in Jayden Ennis’ 8-yard catch, to pull Heritage within 23-21 with about four minutes to play. The Patriots would draw no closer.

The Lions turned almost exclusively to their running game on their next drive, using six consecutive running plays to reach their own 33-yard line, before Bell’s magical 67-yard run clinched the contest with just over a minute to play. “It just felt like we capitalized on big moments tonight,” Hoefs said. “I am so proud of these guys. They have done so much in the last year.” To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress. net/multimedia/slideshows

Deep Heritage team dominant on softball diamond By Michael Dixon Correspondent

When Heritage’s softball team got together for the 2020 season, coach Ron Rivers felt that it could be the best of the many talented teams he’s coached in his years with the Patriots. That idea never got the chance to be proven, as the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season just two games in. The 2021 team, though, gives a similar feeling. There are no non-Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) opponents this year, nor will there be a postseason, beyond a league tournament at season’s end. But when Heritage defeated Freedom 11-6 on Tuesday, April 20, the Patriots moved to 12-0 on the season. But even that perfect 12-0 record doesn’t fully demonstrate how good Heritage has been. The Patriots have handed the Falcons their only two losses. And following Tuesday’s win, Heritage had outscored its opponents by a total of 161-15 — or, to put it another way, an average score of roughly 13-1. That kind of dominance comes with a lot of key contributors, and the Patriots have them. “We’re playing pretty good. We had an up-anddown one today,” Rivers said after Tuesday’s win. “It’s really nice to have good players up and down the lineup. If your normal top players are struggling, everyone’s

picking each other up. It’s not just one person.” As an illustration of that, at least six Patriots had at least one home run this year, prior to Tuesday’s game. Junior infielder Tianna Bell has led the way with eight, sophomore first baseman Alexandra Cutonilli has three, junior infielder Taci Haase and sophomore infielder Skylar Stroh both have two, and senior catcher Julian Barnett and her batterymate, junior pitcher Kasey Aguinaga, have one each. Additionally, six of the Heritage players who had 20 or more at-bats ahead of Tuesday’s game with Freedom were hitting .500 or better. Cutonilli was hitting .700, Bell was at .697, senior outfielder Amari Houston was at .545, Barnett was hitting .541, Haase was at .538 and Stroh was at an even .500. Aguinaga has also been dominant on the mound, posting a 0.52 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 40 innings. Her best start was a five-inning perfect game in a 10-0 victory over Freedom on March 23. Aguinaga struck out twelve Falcon hitters that day. Beyond the talent, one of the most encouraging things about this team is its youth. Houston, Barnett and pitcher Emma Fournier are the only seniors on the team. The rest of the roster comprises five juniors, eight sophomores and a freshman. So although the Patriots will not get the chance to test themselves against the best non-BVAL teams in the playoffs this year, most of them

could get that chance in 2022, or even after. “We should be pretty good for the next couple years,” Rivers said. “I try to make sure that the well is not dry by bringing up some young players — freshmen — and letting them understand how it works. The pace of the game, the speed, is different. Playing varsity, some do really well right away, some take a year, some take two years. But I’d rather have a good player for multiple years than just one year.” There will be no North Coast Section playoffs this year, but Heritage has set some goals. One is to complete the regular season BVAL title. Then they want to win the league tournament. Another Heritage goal is to maintain a high ranking in the polls, ideally finishing the season as one of the top five teams of a very strong Northern California group. That, Rivers said, is what the Patriots are treating as this season’s NCS tournament. One of the goals has been to stay safe. That means taking proper precautions during games and practices, but also staying smart on the weekends and times when the team is not together. “I’m really proud of the team in its handling all of the COVID restrictions and trying to make sure that they stay safe on the weekends,” Rivers said. “One boo-boo will cost you a game because half of the team will have to quarantine. So I’m really proud of the team for working through that.”

The Planning Commission action is final unless an appeal is filed. Applicant: Minaret Holdings, LLC Due to COVID-19, and in keeping with the orders of the Contra Costa County Health Officer, the Executive Orders of the Governor, and the Emergency Orders of the Director of Emergency Services for the City of Brentwood, said Planning Commission meeting will be conducted via Zoom; no physical meeting will occur. Any public comments received up until 5pm of the meeting will be: * distributed to the Planning Commission via email, * posted online for public inspection within one day following the meeting with the agenda packet, and * later summarized in the meeting minutes. The City cannot guarantee that its network, website, and/or the Zoom system will be uninterrupted. To ensure that the Planning Commission receives your comments prior to taking action, you are strongly encouraged to submit

them in advance of the meeting. As e-mails containing public meeting comments are part of the official record, note that personal contact information (potentially including email addresses) may be published if it is included with your e-mail. auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site - www.servicelinkASAP.com - for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case: 141461. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (714) 730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale, or visit this internet website www.servicelinkASAP. com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case Ts# 141461 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Petco Love invests in Antioch Animal Services Antioch Animal Services announced a $10,000 grant investment from the newly named Petco Love, to support their lifesaving work for animals in Antioch. Petco Love is a nonprofit leading change for pets nationally by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. Since their founding in 1999 as the Petco Foundation, they’ve empowered organizations with nearly $300 million invested to date in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. They have helped find loving homes for more than 6.5 million pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations, like ours, nationwide. “Today Petco Love announces an investment in Antioch Animal Services and hundreds of other organizations as part of our commitment to create a

“We went through the great recession and he managed to keep our budget balanced,” Romick said. “We had a very tight budget — we have always had a really tight budget. He’s done a great job managing an ever-growing city, where the income is not always what is needed to keep up with the growth. His leadership will be missed.” Romick said Montgomery has accomplished big things with his small, dedicated staff, many of whom manage

multiple responsibilities. His accomplishments include pulling the town through the recession of 2008, and managing the city as it discontinued its contract for police services with the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and formed its own police department. He built a strong, skilled team to take ideas from inception to reality. With the help of his team, Montgomery completed many community projects during his time with Oakley. Under his leadership, over 2,600 acres were annexed

cal wildfires, some county residents feel anxious as the Fourth of July approaches and their neighbors begin to celebrate in the time-honored fashion: with fireworks. County Supervisor Diane Burgis is working with local law enforcement and fire agencies on drafting the ordinance, which must go before the county board of supervisors for approval. Johnson said that if it passes, it will help his officers enforce the “no fireworks” rule. Burgis affirmed that she will continue to work to give local agencies the tools they need to enforce the law. “Fireworks are an issue across the Bay Area,” said Burgis. “In many areas, like Discovery Bay and the rest of unincorporated Contra Costa County, the Fourth of July is no longer the typical backyard barbecue with sparklers celebrating Independence Day. It’s become a full-on fireworks show and production, all night long. Not only is it extremely disruptive to neighbors, pets and veterans who suffer from PTSD, but serious safety concerns need to be addressed. As we prepare for another drought year and fire season, we must do all we can to prevent fires.”

to the city. He oversaw the building of City Hall, the police department, Civic Center Park, Oakley Plaza, the recreation center, the senior center, the public works operations building, two fire stations and more than 30 parks. Nearly every major arterial road was widened and improved, and the “You, Me, We = Oakley” program was implemented with great success. The Contra Costa Logistics Center and many other projects and programs currently planned and underway were also implemented

Burgis noted that public outreach will continue, and she hopes to have an ordinance adopted before the summer holidays. She also plans to take the ordinance to the Contra Costa Mayors Conference, in hopes that other local cities will follow suit. Steve Aubert, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District fire marshal, said the new ordinance would pave the way for community involvement in the fight against fireworks. He noted that a citation issued to an unnamed Discovery Bay resident last year for lighting more than 500 fireworks on the Fourth of July resulted in a fine of over $52,000. The individual appealed the citation, bringing it down to $26,325. Neighbors in town then started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the fine and to move “forward with plans to work with the fire chief for a legal and safe show the next time we celebrate our freedom.” “For us, with the majority of our area being unincorporated, it’s a huge win,” Aubert said. “Last year, in 2020, despite COVID, we ran 114 calls for service on July Fourth. Twenty-nine of those calls were for

ing the project by the end of 2023. The anticipated cost for the project is $16 million, including design, construction and inspection. “We had been saving quite a bit of money for this project,” Breitstein noted. “We have been putting funds away, and we are also looking at financing options. The decisions about what portion will be financed and what won’t will be made at a later date with the finance committee. We want to receive the bids, get some real costs, and make some decisions then. It will go before the full board and everything will be publicized.” Bids will be received next month,

future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized,” said Susanne Kogut, president of Petco Love. “Our local investments are only one component. This month, we will also launch the first of our national tools to empower all animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us.” “We have worked diligently to improve the lives of pets in our community and are very excited to receive this grant from Petco Love to help support us in our efforts to return lost pets to their homes, and also help shelter pets find new loving homes,” said George Harding, animal services manager at Antioch Animal Services. under Montgomery and his staff. He also led the town through the pandemic while keeping the budget inline. “Bryan has been a strong leader for Oakley and has helped Oakley move from a newly incorporated city to a financially sound, safe city that has a very bright future,” said Oakley Mayor Sue Higgins. “We will always be grateful for the foundation and solid employee team that Bryan helped build, and we know he will continue to be successful in his public service career.”

fire, and that included two burn injuries to a child and a father, with $20,000 in property loss and 125 acres consumed. . . . Previously, we had to actually witness someone lighting off the fireworks before we could do something, but this kind of opens up that door to say we know where they are coming from, and if we know, we can go meet with the property owner, issue the citation and continue to offer deterrents from using illegal fireworks in our county.” Fireworks fines are administration citations in Contra Costa County and fall under the health and safety code. Offenses — that is, fireworks — are fined at approximately $135 each, which is why the aforementioned fine could reach such staggering amounts. “Hopefully it’s an extremely large deterrent for others who choose to go down that same path, and deters other people from lighting off any fireworks in our district and the county,” said Aubert. “No fireworks, whether ‘safe and sane’ or commercial grade, are allowed in Contra Costa. and water and wastewater manager Aaron Goldsworthy hopes to see work start soon after. He said the project’s difficulty lies in the fact a new procedure – the denitrification process – will be inserted into the middle of the town’s existing wastewater treatment system. “You are basically tapping into a pipe that already has a treatment process taking place,” he said. “So we are squeezing a process in between two processes, so it’s not something we can put at the beginning or end of the process, we are putting it in the middle.” The wastewater treatment plant currently has two oxidation ditches. The project calls for the construction of a third, as well as three denitrification

stations, where bacteria will “eat” the nitrogen off the molecules in the basin. Once the project is complete, the plant will have redundancy, allowing one section to be taken offline for maintenance if necessary. “It’s a good project and we are going to be discharging a cleaner product,” Goldsworthy said. “I like the process.” The town’s wastewater master plan was last updated in November of 2019. It determines the best technology and approach to achieve the new nitrogen limit and to identify any other deficiencies the town wastewater treatment facilities may have. For more information or to view the plan, visit www.todb. ca.gov or call 925-634-1131.
