grass mowing operation is believed to be what sparked a vegetation fire along East Cypress Road, just west of Sandmound Boulevard in Oakley, Wednesday, May 11. The mid-morning blaze was reported as being a half-acre in size, but quickly grew to between 2 and 2.5 acres, due to light, flashy fuel and strong winds, according to East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Gil Guerrero. It took crews about 45 minutes to get the fire contained. Early on, additional units had been added to the call for structure protection for a home that was potentially threatened by the fire’s spread, but fire crews were able to get forward progress stopped before it caused any damage to structures in the area. Early stages of the investigation determined that the fire was caused by workers mowing in the field, according to officials. by Jake Menez BRENTWOOD The Brentwood City Council is setting guidelines for the Brentwood Police Department’s usage and acquisition of military gear. The ordinance had first been brought before the council at the April 26 council meeting in an effort to comply with state Assembly Bill No. 481 before being unanimously approved at the May 10 meeting. The bill, passed in September 2021, required police departments to begin the process of adopting a usage policy before May 1 when considering acquiring military gear as well as to continue use of gear already owned by the department. The Assembly bill also requires police departments that receive approval to use military equipment to host an annual “community engagement meeting” in order to address questions or concerns regarding the department’s policy and use of military gear. “We’ll set up an annual meeting explaining what we’ve used them for and any purchasing for the upcoming year,” Captain Tim Herbert said as part of a presentation during the April meeting. “It’ll be a smooth process. I don’t think there’ll be any hiccups.” Military equipment, as defined by the new Brentwood Police Policy 708, encompasses a broad range of gear that includes drones, battering rams, “Firearms and ammunition of .50

The event featured live music, face painting, games with prizes and the opportunity to take photos with several costumed characters and cardboard cutouts, including Darth Vader, Doc Ock, Sailor Moon and a clown. The local chapter of the League of Women Voters is hosting a public candidates forum for Contra Costa District Attorney’s race on Wednesday, May 18, at 7 p.m. in the conference room of the Delta Association of Realtors, 3428 Hillcrest Ave - Suite 200, in Antioch. Incumbent Diane Becton is being challenged by Mary Knox, a 37-year county deputy district attorney. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. They don’t endorse or oppose candidates or political parties, and they strive to influence public policy through education and advocacy, according to their website. “Because we are nonpartisan and never support or oppose candidates, we have done Voter Education and outreach for the past

102 years,” said Martha Goralka of the Diablo Valley chapter of the League of Women Voters. “Candidate forums are one of the important ways we give candidates to reach voters. We also ask candidates to post their issues, positions and web links on VotersEdge.org…voters can enter their address and get all the currently certified candidates’ information on their ballots.” The forum will be moderated by Stephanie Williams-Rogers, who is a league member and current Brentwood Unified School District board member. Knox and Becton will begin by making brief candidate statements, followed by answering a series of questions. All attendees will be given the opportunity to write questions on provided index cards and submit them to be asked. All questions will be edited for clarity and answered by both candidates. The forum will not be streamed or televised live, but a separate forum will be broadcast several times on local TV in the coming days. For a complete broadcast schedule, visit www.contracosta.ca.gov/7626/Broadcast-Schedules. For more information on the May 18 forum, visit https://bit.ly/3yrlHkt.

A similar drive-through event was held last year, which drew an estimated 180 preregistered vehicles, scooping up supplies at various stops. The distributed essentials included health, safety and emergency roadside kits and boxes of solid foods. Jim Fridas, one of the many volunteers who turned out to distribute the supplies last year, said the recipients and volunteers benefited from the event. “If we were not here, what good would we be?” Fridas asked. “There are people who need help.” For more information, call 925-516-5380 or visit https://bit.ly/382Stxw.

Discovery Bay resident Donovan Zachary London, 21, was booked into the San Joaquin County jail on May 3 following an investigation into sexually inappropriate text messages he had been sending to a 14 year-old Tracy boy, according to a Tracy Police Department news release. According to police, London knew the victim from coaching his basketball team. After the boy’s parent discovered the nature of the messages, sent via an unnamed phone app, she contacted the Tracy Police Department. Throughout the agency’s investigation, London’s sexually explicit messages continued, police said. Under the assumption that he was still communicating with the teen, London agreed to meet the alleged victim in Tracy to engage in sexual acts. When London arrived at the agreed upon location, he was met by officers from Tracy’s Special Enforcement Team and Special Investigation Unit detectives, where he was taken into custody without incident. London was initially facing charges of contacting a minor with the intent to commit certain felonies and arranging a meeting with

FINDING UNCLAIMED LIFE INSURANCE BENEFITS

by Joan Grimes, Esq.

One of the most common questions people ask me after someone dies is about life insurance. How can I find out if my parent had life insurance? What if I can’t find a copy of the policy? It is estimated in the United States that 1 out of every 600 life insurance policies remains unclaimed with the average benefit being $2,000.00 It is believed that billions of dollars has gone unclaimed. The reasons that claims are not made on policies is usually because either the life insurance company and the policy owner are no longer in contact or the life insurance company does not know that the insured has died. What most people do not know is that anyone can locate a policy for a policy holder. If you know the name of the life insurance company or the name of the insurance company when the policy was issued, you can look up the address and phone number of their claims department at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ (NAIC) website https://content. naic.org/state-insurance-departments If you don’t know the name of the life insurance company, but think there was a life insurance or annuity contract on the person, you can go to the NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator Service and they will research to see if there is a policy in the person’s name. The website of the locator service is https://eapps.naic.org/ life-policy-locator/#/requestor. However, to make a request on the locator service, they are going to require that you have made a diligent search

of the deceased person’s records and property, including bank statement and safety deposit boxes and that you have asked family members to identify all life insurance policies and annuity contracts that you have reason to believe covered the life of the deceased person. In order to ensure that you do not have an unclaimed benefit after your death, it is very important for you to let you beneficiaries know about your life insurance policies and annuity contracts. Leave a copy of the policy or contract with your Estate Planning documents. Give a copy of the contract to the beneficiaries. If you do not have Estate Planning Worksheet outlining all of your assets and how to make claims on them, I strongly encourage prepare one and put it with your Estate Planning documents. If you need an Worksheet, you can download one at my website, www.grimesep.com/estateplanning-worksheets If you have questions about your assets and how they will be distributed after your death or need help reviewing your Trust, we offer FREE 30 minute consultations in our Walnut Creek and Brentwood offices. Register to vote: To ensure a ballot is received in the mail, prospective voters are registered to vote and that their address is correct at cocovote.us/myvotinginfo. Prospective voters who need to register or update their registration can visit registertovote. ca.gov. After May 23, new voters will need to register and vote in person at the Elections Division in Martinez, at one of the county’s early voting sites, or at a polling place on Election Day. Voting by mail: Vote by Mail now happens for every election, Cooper said. All eligible voters will continue to receive vote-bymail ballots, and the return envelope is postage paid. Prospective voters should put their completed ballot in the envelope, seal it, sign it, and mail it. Voted ballots returned by mail must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received within seven days of the election to be considered timely. Prospective voters can drop their ballot in the mail, at one of the county’s 38 official drop boxes or at any in-person voting locations. Official drop boxes will be open for service when ballots are mailed to voters. Dropping ballots at an official drop box is just like dropping it at the Elections Office and saves taxpayer dollars by reducing the cost of return postage, Cooper said. Voters can find a list of convenient drop-box locations and early voting locations at cocovote.us/drop-boxes.

Ballots must be dropped off no later than 8 p.m. on Election Day. There are two each in Brentwood and in Antioch, and one each in Discovery Bay and in Oakley. Brentwood – Brentwood City Hall at 150 City Park Way; Brentwood Raley’s at 2400 Sand Creek Road. Antioch – Antioch City Hall at 200 H St.; Antioch Community Center at 4703 Lone Tree Way. Discovery Bay – Regatta Park at Parking lot at Sailboat Drive & Porthole Drive. Oakley – Oakley City Hall at 3231 Main St. Prospective voters can avoid long lines and be sure their vote is included in the Election Night count by voting early and mail or drop off their ballot so the Elections Division receives it by Friday, June 3. Track your ballot Ballot tracking is provided by the Secretary of State. It will send notices about ballots, including when it’s mailed, received, and counted. Know where your ballot is every step of the way. Sign up at https://WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov. “If you have any questions about voting or elections, please reach out to us,” Cooper said. For more information about the June 7 Primary election, go to www. cocovote.us and select the “June 7, 2022 Statewide Election” icon, or call 925335-7800 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Upcoming at El Campanil Theatre CLOCKED IN First is Back to The Future trilogy June 4

El Campanil Theatre’s Classic Film Series has been growing in popularity over the years, featuring cult classics such as The Goonies, Dirty Dancing, and Selena, with attendees often coming dressed as their favorite characters and participating in games of movie trivia for free tickets and other prizes. This year, the series is coming back after a two-year hiatus because of COVID-19. This summer, it’s time to go back in history to 1985. On June 4, the theatre is presenting the “Back To The Future” trilogy with its popular soundtrack by Huey Lewis and The News. Not only that, “This will be our first movie showing with our new 4K projection, which was the focus of our “Projecting the Future” fundraising campaign in 2021. So this is very exciting,” said Joel Roster, Executive Director of El Campanil Theatre. The new projector allows El Campanil to show remastered classics with more clarity and quality. The theatre chose Back to the Future for this year’s Classic Film Series because “We really wanted to pick a movie that showed off the capabilities of our new 4k

Press photo

projector and was good for the whole family,” said Erin Green, marketing director for the theatre, in an email. “The Back to the Future trilogy captures the imagination and excitement of why we as a culture love to go to the movies. El Campanil Theatre was first erected as a vaudeville theater, but movies have been central to its programming for almost 100 years.” Fans can see one movie, or all three at a discounted price. The movies are spaced out, with Back to the Future at 11 a.m., Back to the Future Part II at 3 p.m. and Back to the Future Part III at 7 p.m. This leaves plenty of time to rest, stretch, or grab a bite to eat at one of Antioch’s local restaurants, many of which participate in a discount program when you present your same-day ticket stub. Tickets are $10 for adults. $8 for seniors (62 and older) and youth. Tickets can be purchased for the entire trilogy for $20. El Campanil Theatre Academy presents Crazy for You: Youth Edition The El Campanil Theatre in Antioch

has gone crazy -- for you. The El Campanil Theatre Academy Presents: Crazy For You: Youth Edition, on May 20-21 at 7 p.m. “The first thing that caught my eye about Crazy for You: Youth Edition was the high-energy dance numbers, and these students at ECTA have risen to the challenge!” said El Campanil Theatre Director of Education Rachel Kaiulani Kennealy. Youth actors take the stage for the production of Crazy For You: Youth Edition Inspired by the original story of “Crazy For You.” This kid-friendly and bite-sized, one-hour version is the musical story about a boy who loves dance and auditioning for Zangler’s Follies but has to work as a banker for his overbearing mother. For weeks, the youth actors of El Campanil Theatre Academy have been working, singing, and dancing to prepare for opening night on May 20. “These talented young actors have been on state at El Campanil Theatre three days a week to learn classic musical theatre songs from our vocal director Keren Gaiser and fast-paced dances from our choreographer Shelly McDowell,” Kennealy said. Even people who aren’t familiar with musical theater will likely recognize much of the music with famous tunes like “I Got Rhythm”, “Embraceable You” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” For tickets or more information on all upcoming events, visit visit www.elcampaniltheatre.com or call (925) 757-9500.

County needs low-cost spay-and-neuter clinics

Editor: There are an estimated 450,000 cats in Contra Costa County. The above number was documented in the Measure X proposal by Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS). Animal nonprofits desperately tried to submit the proposal, which included money for low-cost, highvolume spay and neuter clinics. There was no support from the Board of Supervisors. CCAS has made a decision not to take in healthy cats and kittens based on a private foundation’s recommendation. Local nonprofits are not asked to collaborate on this decision. The results: Citizens of Contra Costa County cannot cannot bring in healthy cats and kittens into the shelter. We are told to leave animals outside unaltered and unvaccinated, switching the CCAS reduction of burden onto local nonprofits. CCAS is now asking the 18 contracted cities to pay more in their Animal Services contracts. For the cities of Pittsburg, Oakley and Brentwood, this does not include any additional spay and neuter services, and CCAS will remain closed for taking in of healthy cats/kittens. West and Central County we’re given more spay and neuter services. Our elected supervisors have done nothing to support nonprofits.

I would urge the citizens and the cities of East Contra Costa County not to sign the contracts and instead start to develop lowcost, high-volume clinics within East Contra Costa County. This would reduce the animal population, calls for services and provide assistance to local nonprofit animal rescues. Lisa Kirk East County

Protect abortion rights

Editor: To protect our reproductive freedoms, we need to expand the Supreme Court. The Judiciary Act of 2021 would add four new seats to the Supreme Court, bringing the number of justices to 13. It would help restore balance to a Court that Mitch McConnell has packed with rightwing extremists who are on the verge of dismantling abortion rights in America. Recent polling showed that not only do a majority of Americans believe that the Supreme Court should uphold the right to an abortion, they also agree that we need to restore balance to the court and support adding moral judges to the Supreme Court. I’m urging Congress to pass the Judiciary Act so we can create an institution that moves away from partisan politics and represents the good of all Americans. Keren Carter Brentwood

Brentwood Eagle Scout joins elite group McManus earns all 138 merit badges Photo courtesy of Jack Roberts

OBITUARY Esther E. Aguilar

April 23, 1935 – May 4, 2022 Esther E. Aguilar died in Brentwood at age 87. She was a Summerset I community resident since 2000, and previously lived in Berkeley. She was preceded in death by her parents Esteban and Esther Aguilar. She is survived by siblings Margaret Heinz, Linda Aguilar, Teresa Wiedwald (Jay), Steve Aguilar (Sharon) and Daniel Aguilar; by nieces and nephews Leonard Heinz (Julie), Laureen Hildago, Rose-Ellen Fairgrieve (Scott), Jennifer Burgham, Doug Wiedwald, Kimberly Aguilar and Shelly Anderson (Eric); and 11 great nieces and nephews. Esther’s career was with the UC Berkeley Extension Department. Esther enjoyed spending time with family and she treasured memories of traveling to Europe, Asia, Israel and throughout the U.S. A burial Mass will be scheduled in Livingston, Calif., her ancestral home town, at a later date.

Only 0.02 percent of Eagle Scouts have earned all 138 merit badges within the Scouts BSA program. That figure plummets to 0.0004 percent of the total number of scouts who have participated in the organization. Euan McManus, an Eagle Scout with Troop 21 in Brentwood, has become part of that elite group. The Scouts BSA program, which now welcomes girls as well as boys, has seen more than 130 million youth participate. And more than 2.7 million of them have attained the highest rank of Eagle. They have to earn 21 merit badges, ranging from sports, crafts, and hobbies, through academic subjects and life skills. This is the first time a Scout in the Diablo Sunrise District has the distinction of earning every merit badge. The district serves Brentwood, Antioch, Pittsburg, Bay Point, Oakley, Discovery Bay, Byron, Knightsen and Bethel Island and the wider Golden Gate Area Council that covers seven regional counties. McManus was presented with a special plaque at the Golden Gate Area Council’s Leadership Education and Development annual training event (also known as Scouting University) at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill in March by Council representatives.

Troop 21’s Scoutmaster, Michael Chiprich, has known McManus since he was a Cub Scout in Brentwood’s Pack 21 and has watched him work on badges, earn awards, and give back to the program by mentoring younger Scouts. He became a Den Chief with Pack 21 (and later with two other packs) and led many activities for them, including a cycle ride with trash pick-up project along the Marsh Creek Trail, and many fun STEM activities, including remodeling a radiocontrolled truck into a planetary rover - remotely controlled and with a camera transmitting video back to a command center. In addition to being an Eagle Scout, he: – is also a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, the highest rank achievable in Scouts BSA’s Honor Society, – earned the Adams Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year in 2019 for organizing a STEM family night at Marsh Creek Elementary School in Brentwood (his former elementary school), – received the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Scout of the Year award at local and district levels in 2020, – earned the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement in 2019, – earned the Dr. Bernard Harris and Thomas Edison National STEM Supernova Award Medals in 2017, among others. Why spend so much time and energy on earning all these merit badges?

Euan McManus, a Brentwood Eagle Scout, recently earned all 138 merit badges, becoming the first Scout in the Diablo Sunrise District to earn the distinction. “I just love learning and experiencing new things,” he said. “The merit badges have increased my knowledge in a huge range of different subjects some of which I knew nothing about before starting work on the badge – as well as teaching me a variety of new outdoor, technical and life skills, which I am sure will stand me in good stead throughout my whole life. I am hoping to study mechanical engineering at college in the fall and several of the merit badges were STEM-related, so that really helped me with some of my high school classes.” If you are interested in learning more about the many opportunities and adventures offered by Scouting, contact Michael Chiprich at michael. chiprich@sbcglobal.net. Troop 21 also has a partner troop for girls age 11-17.

MIKE’S ESTATE PLANNING MINUTE

D

|

G

12

By Michael J. Amthor, Esq.

HAVE YOU TALKED WITH YOUR FAMILY ABOUT MONEY? YOU SHOULD. HERE’S WHY.

I have discussed the importance of estate planning many times in these articles. Saving money, peace of mind and making things easier for those you leave behind are just a few of the benefits. However, with estate planning typically comes difficult conversations with family members that does not come natural. Subjects such as who you want to be in charge of your estate after death, who should receive your assets and end of life issues are just the beginning. Nine out of 10 Americans consider it important to have a financial plan but almost half have difficulty discussing finances with loved ones. There are three reasons for this: It can be overwhelming, it can be awkward and talking about a future plan is difficult when you don’t have one in place. The statistics tell an interesting story. 38% of people do not even talk to their spouse or partner about the other’s financial situation before getting married. 55% of those without a financial plan say they are not confident in their retirement and a full 86% of us do not feel they have saved enough for retirement. It starts with a conversation and

sometimes we just need a little help to take that first step. When I talk to clients about estate planning, I do so without making them feel guilty or being ashamed. The most important step you take is talking with someone. I reassure my clients that it is never too late nor too early to start talking about finances after death. Most of my clients have a very real sense of accomplishment and relief because many have been putting it off for years. I cannot emphasize enough the peace of mind my clients walk away with when we complete their estate plan and they know this important issue has been handled. Make a commitment to yourself and talk to your family today about these issues. Keep it light and do not take it too seriously. Your next call should be to my office and we will put your plans into action. If you have questions on this or any other estate planning topic, call me at (925) 5164888. Early start to full wildfire staffing REGIONAL Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Con Fire) has returned to full fire responses for all grass, vegetation, and wildfires across the district because of the early start to wildfire season. Full responses consist of a minimum of five firefighting apparatus and crews. Since December 2021, such responses had been reduced to a single engine based on the reduced threat during winter months. Con Fire is preparing for a challenging wildfire season and urges all residents to do the same to protect their families, homes and neighbors. If not already done, now is the time to ensure properties meet or exceed all weed abatement and defensible space requirements, officials said. These are the most important things owners can do to make sure firefighters have the time and ability to better defend properties from wildfires. In addition to increasing response levels for all grass, vegetation and wildfires, ConFire is also adjusting staffing levels. A major improvement in wildfire readiness this year is the implementation of the Zonehaven digital evacuation planning and management tool by all county fire and law enforcement agencies. This new tool streamlines planning, conduct and communication of evacuations for all disasters by creating discrete evacuation zones for every area of the county. Residents are encouraged to note their zone for reference in an emergency by visiting cwsalerts.com/know-your-zone/. “Seasonal fire danger is once again upon us, earlier than in recent years, and likely potentially more dangerous with recent fire activity and behaviors normally not seen until June or July,” said Fire Chief Lewis Broschard. “Forecasts are

I urge all residents to prepare for the possibility of wildfires now by practicing weed abatement and defensible space creation and reviewing your own plans for evacuation, including learning your new evacuation zone.” In 2021, across Contra Costa County, more than 60 residents were displaced from their homes due to wind-driven wildfires destroying homes. In each case, inadequate weed abatement and/or defensible space contributed to the damage or loss of structures, officials said. Conversely, in an early season vegetation fire almost one year ago in Pittsburg, steps taken by home owners to protect their properties contributed to what might otherwise have been the loss of multiple homes, officials said. A significant contributor to early arrival of fire weather is season rain totals well below historically normal amounts, officials said. Recent late-season storms did not provide rainfall to keep vegetation moist, but did support new grass and brush growth. Vegetation across the district is uncharacteristically dry for this point in the season, officials said. Moreover, long-range weather forecasts predict average to slightly above average temperatures with little chance of measurable precipitation. Detailed information on protecting homes and businesses from wildfire dangers, including deadlines for pulling weeds and preparing for possible evacuation is at the district’s website at www. cccfpd.org. Daniel Sohn has been named the president/CEO of the Antioch Chamber of Commerce. Sohn will assume the overall direction of the chamber’s operations in June. He is the current CEO of the Sonoma County Alliance, a business advocacy organization located in the North Bay, and he replaces Sean Wright, who is stepping down. The Chamber is planning to celebrate Wright and his work/dedication to the chamber and the City of Antioch over the next couple of months, chamber officials said. The event will also include a meet-n-greet opportunity for Sohn and the Antioch business community. Details will be shared soon as plans are finalized, officials said. “We are also excited to bring in Daniel Sohn as our new CEO,” said Antioch Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Ana Cosovic in a press release. “The Antioch Chamber truly cares about our community and supports our businesses. Daniel brings expertise that will help bring Chamber members fresh programs and services. After ten years of having a part-time CEO, Daniel Sohn is being hired full time which will allow a greater opportunity for the Chamber to influence policy on a local and statewide level. The future of the Chamber is truly bright.” Sohn has served as CEO for the Imperial Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce where he was hired to lead the organization’s regionalization efforts. Most recently, he was nominated by Gov. Gavin Newsom and then appointed by President Joe Biden to serve as a local board member representing California to the nation’s Selective Service System, which registers men for the military draft. Before his appointment, Sohn was elect-

Patriots wrap up another winning season on courts Heritage wins 8th league title, but loses in playoffs

The Heritage boys tennis team recently wrapped up its eighth consecutive league title. The team fell in the first round of the North Coast Section team playoffs this week.

by Michael Dixon Correspondent

In more ways than one, the 2022 season was a return to normal for Heritage’s boys tennis team. It was the first normal schedule in three years, after COVID-19 wiped out nearly all of the 2020 season and significantly altered the 2021 year. It was also more of the same from a results standpoint, as the Patriots brought home their eighth consecutive Bay Valley Athletic League title – a streak that the current players emphasized they wanted to continue. Heritage posted a 10-0 record during the regular season and won the league tournament to clinch a spot in the North Coast Section playoffs. The season did come to an end there, with Amador Valley beating the Patriots 7-0. That loss aside, coach Beth Hill was happy with how the team played and grew throughout the year. “We have so much to be proud of this season,” she said. “We finished our BVAL season undefeated claiming the eighth straight title. The boys worked hard, stayed focused and earned the league title. It was nice to see the growth in each of our players to the end of the season. This goes for all of our players -- especially our JV players. They have not only improved their tennis skills but also their mental strength when it comes to the game.” Even with the first-round NCS teams draw playing against the No. 3 seed Amador, “We knew we were the underdog and had nothing to lose,” Hill added. “It was more pressure for them than us, and we could go into this match and just play our best and have fun. We are so proud of all of our team as each of them helped us have the successful season that we did.”

Photo courtesy of Heritage High School

Heritage’s top player on the season was No. 1 singles player, junior Nikhil Siao. He finished the season with an 8-2 record in BVAL matches and even took Amador Valley’s No. 1 singles player to a tiebreak in the first set of the NCS loss. A pair of underclassmen held down the No. 1 doubles spot, with freshman Blake Vitale and sophomore Michael Simpson going 8-0 in league play. Juniors Vince Cocciolone and Zain Hannan, meanwhile, were 10-0 in the BVAL and played as Heritage No. 2 doubles team. While having all of those players returning will bode well for the Patriots in 2023, they are losing some key players. Five seniors will graduate. That includes No. 2 singles player, Josh Kim, Simon Santiago, who played No. 4 and No. 5 throughout the season, No. 3 doubles team of Patrick Cruz and Ysaach Habon, and Santiago Carrascal. “We are sad to lose five seniors this year,” Hill said. “All five have been on the team since they were freshmen.” Despite that, the cupboard won’t be bare for Heritage. In addition to the returning players, the Patriots will also be bolstered by a junior varsity team that features many players with at least a degree of varsity experience. While Heritage had a full varsity lineup, many of their

BVAL opponents did not. But during those matches, many of their opponents had their varsity players play a second match against the Patriots’ JV players, giving them some vital match experience against potential future league rivals. “We have a few up-and-coming JV players that have impressed Coach Sylvina [Goff] and I with their eagerness to learn, work hard at practice and be part of the team,” Hill said. Goff was brought in as a new assistant coach. Hill lauded the team for how well they responded to and learned from the new coach. While Heritage’s streak of BVAL titles significantly predates any of the current player’s time at the school or in the program, Hill said she felt that the players wanted badly to keep that streak going. That drove the Patriots through the season, helping them do just that. “We have a great group of players who have worked very hard all season to continue to play their best tennis,” Hill said. “They are all coachable players, which makes our job as coaches a little easier. They were all very motivated to keep the winning streak going.” To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia/ slideshows

Heritage track and field athletes star at league meet by Michael Dixon Correspondent

Athletes from all six Bay Valley Athletic League schools enjoyed victory in at least one track and field event, but Heritage came away on top at the BVAL Championship Meet at Freedom High School. The Patriots dominated the girls varsity event on May 7, posting 197.5 points. No other school in the league was within even 100 points, as Deer Valley’s 77 points were good enough for second. The boys event was a little closer, with Heritage posting 175.5 points. But that was still comfortably ahead of second place Pittsburg, who finished with 129.5. Of the 14 individual events for BVAL girls, half were won by the Patriots. Boding even better for the future is that none of those winners are seniors. Junior Jasper Villanueva and sophomore Guinn Herron both won two events. Villanueva won the high jump (4 feet 8 inches) and pole vault (8 feet), while Herron also won in the 100-meter hurdles (15.81) and the long jump (18 feet, 1.5 inches). Other Heritage winners were juniors Kimora Mclemore and Allison Wedleigh, as well as freshman Kylie Wisley. Mclemore won the shot put (36

feet, 8 inches), Wedleigh won the triple jump (33 feet, 5.5 inches) and Kylie Wisley won the 3,200-meter race (12:15.46). While the overall girls event belonged to Heritage, the sprints belonged to Deer Valley -- specifically Wolverines senior, Deserey Bryant. Bryant swept the 100- and 200-meter races, winning in 12.17 and 25.57 respectively. She was also a part of Deer Valley’s 4x100 re-

lay team. Bryant ran the opening leg and was followed by seniors Leloni and Teloni Ervin, with sophomore Joi-Lyn Haulcy running the anchor for the Wolverine win (49.58). Bryant, Ervin and Ervin also ran in the same order in the 4x400 relay. There, sophomore Keneyia Hall ran anchor, delivering Deer Valley another win (4:11.68). Pittsburg was the only other BVAL

school with more than one winner in a girls event. Like Heritage, all of the Pirates league champions will be back. Sophomore Milani Bell won the 400-meter race (59.32), freshman Anaya Russell crossed first in the 300-meter hurdles (48.33) and junior Lauren Lemire won the discus (123 feet, 10 inches). Freedom senior Kylee Denver won the 800-meter race (2:23.63) while Liberty junior Rylee Guinn won the 1,600-meter event (5:24.97). Heritage and Pittsburg athletes generally found the winner’s circle in the boys events. Each school had league champions in six events -- with both winning five individual events and a relay. The longer-distance races were more favorable to the Patriots. Senior Morel Ombougno won at 400 meters (50.74), Dominic DePiero won the 1,600 meters (4:27.12) and senior James Woolery won the 3200 meterrace (10:01.49). Heritage Seniors Zachary Carroll won the 300-meter hurdles (40.68) while senior Dinari Washington took first place in pole vault (10 feet, 6 inches). four events -- three of them were from the host school. Freedom’s Wyatt Erickson won the 800-meter race (1:59.89) while fellow Falcons senior Aaron Martinez and Shamond Brooks won the shot put (48 feet, 5.5 inches) and long jump (22 feet, 8.5 inches), respectively. Jorge Hernandez recorded Antioch’s lone victory at the event, winning the triple jump (44 feet, 2.75 inches). Next up is the North Coast Section Tri-Valley Championship, which will also be hosted at Freedom on May 14. After that will be the NCS Meet of Champions on May 21, held at Dublin High School. Ombougno, freshman Jordan Green won the 4x400 relay (3:30.20). Like the girls event, the 100- and 200-meter races were won by the same person. For the boys, it was Pittsburg junior Zach Card, who won both the 100 (10.84) and 200 (22.03). Pirates senior Joseph Quinn was a star in the field events, winning the discus (134 feet, 9 inches) and high jump (5 feet, 8 inches). Pittsburg sophomore LaRico Tezeno won the 110 hurdles (16.07). Tezeno also led off the 4x100 relay for the Pirates and was followed by Card, junior Keynan Higgins and senior Dearen Idahosa, who ran the anchor leg and crossed the finish line first in the Pittsburg victory (42.38). Many people believe that estate planning is simply preparing a will to make sure that assets are passed to the people that we want to receive those assets when they die. While that is part of estate planning, estate planning involves more than just taking steps to pass property from one generation to another. A common question is, “Why do I need to do any planning?” There are countless reasons why people need a comprehensive estate plan to deal with the situations that all families must someday face. The reasons to plan vary from person to person and family to family, but a few reasons to have a comprehensive plan are: Establish a method for managing your assets in an efficient manner and avoid probate. Designate who will manage your affairs when you pass away. Protect your children’s inheritance if you pass away and your spouse re-marries after your death. As an estate planning attorney, I have seen what happens when people do not look at estate

Liberty Lions dance the night away High school juniors and seniors, despite their school year coming to a close, have officially entered prom season. The stressful, yet exciting, time of the school year when upperclassmen scavenge the outh racks for riter luxury dresses and fancy suits, to experience a night of fantasy. For many of our graduating seniors, this season would be both their first and last chance to formally celebrate the end of the school year with their classmates, as schools find themselves no longer strictly inhibited by COVID-19 restrictions. This year, Liberty’s High School’s Senior Ball was held at Lake Chalet in Oakland on April 16. The night consisted of dancing, food, karaoke, photo booths with Lake Merritt in the background, and more. What was senior Courtney Wieland’s favorite part of the experience? “My favorite part about the ball was the dance floor and the food. The fact that there was food you could get yourself, and with the dance floor on the other side of the room, it made this dance one of the best I’ve been to.” Wieland also said she loved the location selected and hopes that Liberty will “continue to give these experiences to future students.” Many were unsure how many seniors would attend the ball, as there were still COVID-19 regulations in place. All attendees must have either been vaccinated, or have taken a COVID-19 test 24 hours prior to the event. However, while not everyone from the graduating class participated, there were still a great number in attendance. Members of Liberty’s Leadership class visited the Lake Chalet prior to the dance in order to select the food. Among the appetizers offered were a variety of sliders, sandwiches, and bruschetta. In addition to the heavier foods, there

Y W

was also a dessert bar as well as a soft drink bar inside the venue. The entertainment of the night consisted of a DJ in one of the two main event rooms, with strobe lights and a dance floor, attracting many attendees. SF Photo Booths made an appearance on the outside dock, offering a wide variety of props for students to use in order to add a fun element to their photos. The second entertainment room housed a karaoke machine that students gathered around throughout the night. Ending at 11 p.m., the dance was considered a great success by many. However, this was not the only prom Liberty hosted in April. Liberty’s Junior Prom was held on April 9 at the high school’s aquatic center. The theme of the evening was “Enchanted Forest,’’ with the outdoor area decorated with fairy lights, balloons, tables, and a large tent in which students danced. The food consisted mainly of an assortment of fruit, doughnuts, and cake pops, and snacks such as chips and pretzels. This prom also included a DJ and teachers who volunteered to take photos of the attendees. “The last dance I had been to was homecoming but I definitely have to say that junior prom was really well put together,” said senior Elizabeth Estrada. “Everything, including snacks, tables, and the dance floor, was very organized and pure eye candy.” Estrada also said that while the dance took a bit to get started, once students all came to the dance floor it became very enjoyable. Students are now looking ahead to graduation and what that will mean for them. Both dances were a good opportunity for those nearing the end of high school to celebrate and let their hair down one last time before the end of the school year. – Keri Davis

East Bay Regional Park District officials are planning events, including a campfire, for this weekend at Big Break Regional Shoreline.

Events at Big Break Regional Shoreline this weekend Two special events are scheduled for Big Break Regional Shoreline this weekend. “A Tale of Two Salinities” will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon and again from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15, at the visitor center. The program explores the interaction between salt and fresh water that occurs in the Delta, and how it affects both wildlife and humans. And an evening campfire is scheduled at Big Break from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15. Campfire activities will highlight the park’s attractions. And s’mores, those gooey campfire treats, will be a part of the show, officials said.

Aside from this weekend, there are always interesting things to see and do at Big Break Regional Shoreline in Oakley, and weekends are especially active, according to East Bay Regional Park District officials. by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. The following statements; NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS and NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER are statutory notices for all one to four single family residences and a courtesy notice for all other types of properties. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916) 939-0772 or visit this Internet Website http://www.nationwideposting.com/, using the file number assigned to this case 812W-019309. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916) 939-0772, or visit this internet website http://www.nationwideposting.com/, using the file number assigned to this case 812W-019309 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Bay Area News Group prompted city officials to release the findings of the investigation on May 9 in the press release. “Ultimately, in compliance with State Law, we made the documents public (both the redacted investigative report and transcript),” City Manager Josh McMurray said of the decision via email. To view the documents, visit https://bit. ly/38rvuw6 Capelletti was initially placed on paid leave in September of 2021 as an investigation was conducted by the Danville-based firm Kramer Workplace Investigations, according to the press release. The investigation lasted 11 weeks. Numerous individuals were interviewed by the firm and a report was written with their findings. “The report found that Capelletti, who was hired in September of 2020, had engaged in a consensual sexual relationship with a subordinate

Support

employee and that evidence existed that he made sexually-related comments to a Police Department employee and of inappropriate touching of a Department employee,” the press release states. Following the report’s discovery of Capelletti’s inappropriate conduct, he was fired by McMurray. As an “at-will” employee, Capelletti could be terminated by the city at any time without cause, according to the release. As a condition of Capelletti’s employment agreement, he received four months of severance pay after being fired. “The results of the investigation made it clear that he lacked the judgment and ethical standards to remain as Chief,” McMurray said. “The damage to the morale in the Oakley Police Department through his actions and words is significant and we are working every day to ensure a safe environment for all employees and for all that we serve in this community.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net

especially young children – missed out on important developmental social interaction during the 18 months of distance learning. His district has focused on conversations with teachers to keep the lines of communication open, offering counseling services, programs for ailing employees, allowing students and staff to take time to be with their families, and a full-time marriage and family therapist on the Knightsen Elementary School campus. “It’s been a tremendous resource having that support on campus,” Yurkovich said. “We have increased training for staff to recognizing depression and anxiety, the county has been supportive, and our counselor has been critical in intervening in the moment and getting information out on how to access services.” A recent uptick in youth suicides has highlighted the need to engage students and support mental health. While these tragic stories don’t always make the news – for many reasons, including a perceived stigma attached to suicide – Graham Wiseman hopes to increase awareness of this darker epidemic. Wiseman suffered the loss of his own son to suicide and has since dedicated his life to preventing families from suffering the way his did. As part of his mission, Wiseman cofounded Being Well CA, an organization focused exclusively on youth mental health. His program focuses on the three legs of mental health support: students, parents and educators. It is currently under consideration by the Byron Union School District’s climate committee. Byron “We had proposed to the Byron District, pre COVID, that we offer a teacher training and we felt that – and we still do – that if you don’t have all three legs of mental health, you don’t have a stable base,” Wiseman said. “We start with teachers because they are critical to the success of this. Then we talk to the parents.” Part of Wiseman’s program lets participants know it’s “OK not to be OK” and covers what vocabulary to use when addressing the stigma of mental health. Tamara Weber, a Byron school board trustee, said her passion right now is making sure the district has the tools and programs necessary to address the social emotional needs of the entire community.

caliber or greater, excluding standard-issue shotguns and standard-issue shotgun ammunition,” and more. During the public comment portion of the April 26 meeting, residents spoke regarding the use of military equipment in Brentwood. “It’s just concerning that we need military-grade equipment in Brentwood,”

MAY 13, 2022

“We currently have Choose Love in place,” said Weber, noting the program encourages students to model positive behaviors. “We are piloting other programs as well. I am advocating for a robust program that will address the social and emotional needs for all, because we are faced with unique challenges educating students during an endemic. Children and adults alike are dealing with a lot of social and emotional issues that cause depression and can lead to violence and suicide.” Discovery Bay Jim Mattison, president of the Discovery Bay Community Foundation, is working with Wiseman and the Byron District to bring Being Well CA, which aims to to reduce anxiety, depression and suicide ideation in youth into the schools. Mattison said the numbers of children contemplating suicide demand action. “One out of four kids thinks about suicide and one out of five kids have some type of mental health issues and it’s now getting worse,” he said. “Many kids just sit at home and spend four to eight hours a day staring at their phones by themselves thinking, ‘Everyone has it better than me,’ and what does that lead to? In my opinion, this program should have been in place three years ago.” Brentwood Brentwood Union School District has also acknowledged a mental health crises and taken steps to help its students and teachers. The district used some of its one-time federal money provided during the COVID-19 pandemic to purchase additional counseling services for this school year and next. “That money is funding people, those people are boots on the ground, onsite, directly there to support students,” said BUSD Superintendent Dana Eaton. Eaton noted the district’s counselors share lessons connected to supporting students on Wellness Wednesdays. BUSD also contracts with Care Solace, a link given to parents to help connect them with a professional to suit their needs and insurance coverage. “The other thing we are doing, and this is the third year, we partnered with Sandy Hook Promise,” he said, referring to the program that intends to teach youth and adults how to prevent school violence, shoot-

resident Carolina Villaseca said. Villaseca then expressed privacy concerns regarding drones flying over private residences and the use of the footage taken by the aircrafts. Ben Kellogg asked why the department felt there was a need for militarygrade equipment. After the public comments, Herbert addressed both speakers’ concerns. “We have a strict policy on the

CAPELLETTI

ings, and other harmful acts. “Through that, all of our middle schoolers receive training on ‘say something,’ an anonymous reporting tool for students to report other students or themselves who might be in a mental health crises, who might be cutting or hurting themselves, or something else like that.” The district has also provided employee assistance for some counseling services to help them find appropriate services sooner than insurance might provide. Eaton said employee support is as critical as student support. Oakley In Oakley Elementary Union School District (OEUSD), Superintendent Jeff Palmquist said he and his staff have adopted a more systematic approach to social emotional learning through a curriculum called Second Step. OEUSD is also using the California Healthy Kids Survey -- an anonymous, confidential survey of school climate and safety, student wellness, and youth resiliency-- to gather as much data as possible to focus a response. Delta Vista Middle School is piloting a program called the Mindful Life Project, which helps staff provide mindfulness and social emotional strategies for students. The district is also partnering with Contra Costa County Health Services to provide tools and resources directly to students and their families. “We partner with the county to provide training,” Palmquist said. “They are helping us build our capacity to train folks and provide interventions. There is sitelevel context on it so they can develop their own site programs.” For more information on the programs offered in KESD, visit www.kesd-ca.schoolloop.com. drones, and we are very cognizant of some of those civil rights issues and civil liberties issues,” Herbert said, including who has access to drone footage and an enforced timeframe in which footage can be retained before it must be destroyed. The department’s policy prohibits the recording of footage in areas where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. Regarding Kellogg’s question, Her-

bert reiterated that military equipment was a designation for a wide variety of gear, some of which is already in use by the department. As a result of the Senate bill, the department’s gear has been reclassified as military grade. “Today is a good day,” Councilwoman Jovita Mendoza said. “It’s all about transparency.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net
