Ponds, puddles, and creeks can pose some serious problems for dogs. Dogs have a curious and instinctive nature, so they tend to want to drink from these sources. This is dangerous, and can even become fatal. Puddles tend to have a mixture of toxins, such as oil and antifreeze. Creeks contain blue-green algae, which is poison to dogs. They can develop gastrointestinal and neurological problems. Leptospirosis, a bacterial disease, can be found in both ponds and puddles, which is also toxic to dogs. Safety tip: Don’t ever let your dog drink from ponds, puddles and creeks. Always bring enough water and a collapsible bowl for the dog on your walks. Whenever you see your dog headed for these water sources, pull him away and find a place to sit and take out that collapsible bowl and pour some water into it or find a ground-level drinking fountain for dogs at a park.

feces, not to mention food bits, litter and debris not picked up before or dropped by others – on the street that piques their interest. They are curious and want to put it in their mouths. Maybe you pick up after Fido, but unfortunately, not everyone does, so keep that in mind. Dog feces contain E-coli, which can cause diarrhea. So be sure to take enough poop bags on your walks to pick up after Fido. Safety tip: Steer your dog away from any feces on your walks. If you see it, hold the leash closer to you and walk
GO
Safety tip: Walk the dog during certain hours of the day. The best times to walk the dog are in the early morning or in the evening — the coolest times of the day. Try to avoid direct sunlight and look for areas with lots of trees for shade. Also fit the dog with special booties for these walks to avoid not only a hot pavement, but also glass and other debris that litter the parks and trails. Both humans and dogs tend to get dehydrated in the hot sun, so bring enough water for yourself and Fido. There are also dog parks with special ground-level drinking fountains specifically for dogs. Find out where they are located.

If it’s too hot and there’s no shade where you choose to have your walk, then it’s best not to walk your dog that day. Walking your dog on a scorching hot day can be really dangerous for both you and the dog. It also damages their paw pads. They can wind up with serious burns, cuts and blisters. It’s disheartening to still see folks walking their dogs in hot weather. They seem unaware how unpleasant it is for the dog to walk on hot pavement with no shade. It’s best to test the pavement first by placing the back of your hand there. If you can’t keep it down longer than a few seconds, then it’s unsafe for the dog to walk on. Since humans wear shoes, we are unable to feel the heat. Plus, some dogs have fur, which is like wearing a coat in the summer. And there’s always the danger of heatstroke. Remember that if it’s too hot for you to walk barefoot on the pavement, then it’s too hot and uncomfortable for Fido.
Walking your dog is important for its health, but it’s imperative that you keep them safe while doing so.

Summer is almost here officially. With the sunny days upon us, more people are walking their dogs, too. But while walking the dog may seem like a fun and healthy activity, it comes with its own risks and dangers. You may encounter situations on your walk with Fido that you never thought about. That said, here are some common problems that you may have to deal with along with some safety precautions so that your walk with Fido can be more enjoyable.

Finding the right veterinarian for your pet DAWNMARIE FEHR

hoosing the right veterinarian can make or break a pet owner’s
experience, and there are a few veterinary care centers in East County. Manager Daniel Howland at Brentwood Family Pet Care said pet owners should make sure they find a veterinarian whose style of practicing medicine meets their needs. “You should make sure you are comfortable with your veterinarian,” said Howland. “Just like human doctors, they all have different personalities and styles. If you want someone who will sit and take time to talk to you, make sure that the veterinarian does that. Other people just want them to take the pet and fix it and that’s fine, but make sure the style of medicine the veterinarian practices is what is important to you.” Howland, who runs the day-to-day operations at Brentwood Family Pet Care, said another thing to consider is whether a veterinarian presents options to pet owners. “Vet care can be expensive, and the veterinarians that work the best for a lot

Veterinary Medical Center for 22 years. She suggested pet owners think about convenience as well as a good rapport. “I think with people’s schedules being what they are, think about where the hospital is located and do their hours fit your schedule,” she said. “If I have a regular 9-5 job, is that going to be a problem if I can only go to
the vet on Saturdays or late in the evening? So that’s what I would look at first.” She also suggested getting recommendations from friends and neighbors to see where they go for their animals. “In some cases, we have pets that come a long distance and drive past a lot of other vets to come here,” Lafferty said. “For them, it’s not the convenience so much as our services fit their needs.” Find out what type of animals a hospital will accept, the experts say. It can be difficult to find care for reptiles and amphibians, and even pocket pets like hamsters and rats. Finally, Lafferty suggested looking for a veterinarian with compassion. “Compassion is huge,” she said. “Do they care? Are they listening to you? Do their recommendations seem like they are based on your situation and your desires and wants? Compassion and listening is so important, from the person who answers the phone all the way to the vet themselves.” Brentwood Family Pet Care is at 4421 Balfour Road, Suite A, in Brentwood. Exploring the benefits of pet insurance
E
nsuring the safety and wellbeing of a companion animal is a big responsibility. Pets
need shelter, food, water, and routine medical care at the very least, and some extra TLC can always do a pet good as well. New pet owners may experience some sticker shock after bringing a furry friend home. According to a Harris Poll conducted in the spring of 2020 on behalf of TD Ameritrade, dog owners spent nearly twice as much on their pets as cat owners – $1,201 versus $687 in a single year. One area that can be particularly costly is health care, especially if the pet has a chronic illness or suffers an injury. Pet insurance is an increasingly viable option for those looking to defray medical costs for their pets and safeguard them in the process. Like other types of insurance, pet insurance is something pet owners purchase hoping they will never have to use it. The TD Ameritrade survey found Millennials or Generation Xers report spending anywhere from three to 20 times more on pet insurance than Baby Boomers. Pet owners have various options in regard to insuring their animals. Certain

Plans that also include wellness options, like My Pet Protection with Wellness from Nationwide, tend to be broader and may cover preventive visits, flea and tick products, spaying and neutering, and even dental cleanings.
There are several benefits to getting pet insurance. Many people are not financially prepared for an emergency pet bill that could cost several thousand dollars.

Pet insurance premiums, which are paid over time, can refund a good percentage of out-of-pocket costs to the pet owner. Here’s a look at some of the benefits of pet insurance. ♦ Pick whichever veterinarian you prefer: Unlike human health insurance plans that may require you to stay in a specific network of providers, pet insurance policies enable you to pick any veterinarian you prefer. ♦ Insure any age or breed of pet: Pet health insurance providers will cover older animals. However, premiums will be lower the earlier you insure your companion animal. ♦ Arrange a payment plan you can afford: Payment plans for pet insurance can be paid monthly, quarterly, semiannually, or annually depending on the plan and policy holders preferences. That makes it easier to fit pet health care into your budget. ♦ Ensures all health needs will be met: Some pet owners may push off or pick and choose treatments for their pets depending on the cost of these procedures. Pet insurance may be the difference between getting your pet the care he or she needs or delaying getting pets the help they need.

64 years and counting – Cutino’s feeds Oakley’s animals MELISSA VAN RUITEN

utino’s Feed and Tire Center has served Oakley and the surrounding area since 1958, when the original owners, Tony and Lois
Cutino, opened up shop on Main Street in Oakley. Cutino’s carries a variety of pet, poultry, and large animal feed, including popular brands such as Taste of the Wild, Canidae, Swanson Poultry Feed, and Victor Dog Food. “We special order a lot of stuff, as well.” said current
owner Tom Seeno. Seeno began working at Cutino’s in 1976, when he was a senior in high school. How have things changed since then? “It’s a rollercoaster all the time,” Seeno said. “Things change. You just have to go with the flow. Customer service has always been the benchmark of our business.” Since the Best of Oakley contest began in 2008, Cutino’s has consistently taken first place in Livestock and Feed Supply category, so locals enjoy the products and service offered. They’re also big supporters of local 4H and Future Farmers of America clubs. “During the 4H time, for the [county] fair, they buy their feed here,” Seeno said. “I order what they want, and they
feed [the livestock] from the time they get them, to the time they auction them at the fair.” While Cutino’s doesn’t facilitate the sale of most animals, they do offer live chicks for sale in the spring and summer, along with the equipment needed to get your own chicken operation up and running. Ameraucanas and Barred Plymouth Rocks are two of the chicken breeds that have been offered in the past. Both breeds are considered dual-purpose, meaning that they are good egg layers, but also are suitable for meat. Cutino’s Feed and Tire Center is at 3770 Main St, Oakley. Business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more information, call 925-625-2200.

dog owners lose their pets in a five-year period, while 15 percent of cat owners lose their pets. The ASPCA indicates that around one in three pets will go missing in their lifetimes. While Lost Pet Research & Recovery says only 6% of dogs are not recovered, a much larger percentage of cats (34%) are never found. Therefore, pet owners should take certain steps to prevent lost pets and to help recover them quickly. ♦ Update identification. The more forms of identification a pet has, the better the chances for recovery. While a collar with ID tags is essential, microchipping is an additional safeguard. Be sure to routinely update the microchip database with your current information.
♦ Act quickly. Don’t waste hours or days waiting for a pet to return home. The sooner you begin searching the area, the better the odds of finding the pet. Start with the immediate area right outside your home and branch out from there. ♦ Check nooks and crannies. Pets may become frightened of noises or escape homes to chase other animals. American Humane urges owners to look for places the pet may become trapped, such as in basements or garages. Other places to look include under vehicles. Pets may hide during the day, so return to areas at night. Bring along a toy or treat that may lure the pet out of hiding. – Courtesy of Metro Creative

Tips to make your home more cat-friendly
M
illions of people cannot imagine life at home without their cats. Cats
make wonderful pets, bringing their own unique personality into a home and providing companionship to their owners. As great as cats are, millions still enter animal shelters every year. According to the ASPCA, roughly half of the 6.5 million companion animals that enter United States animal shelters each year are cats. And while figures are dropping, hundreds of thousands of those cats end up being euthanized. Local animal shelters are home to many cats that would make great pets, and prospective cat owners are urged to
visit such shelters to find cats that would make welcome additions to their homes. For those who find cats to take home, the following are a handful of ways to make a home as cat-friendly as possible.
to such appliances closed, and check to make sure cats are not inside before using these appliances. Paper shredders and work stations with lots of wires also pose a safety risk to cats, so make sure these appliances and areas are inaccessible.
Watch how cats drink water.
Some cats respond positively to cat flaps, while others do not. Cat flaps also may invite other cats into a home, which can upset your cat and make it vulnerable to attack. While some cats may want the freedom a cat flap allows, others may be on edge around the cat flap. Let cats’ behavior dictate if you will keep the cat flap or not.
Provide high, but safe, resting places.
Take stock of appliances that pose Watch how cats safety risks. behave around cat Certain appliances are potentially flaps. significant threats to cats’ safety. For example, International Cat Care notes that open washing machines or tumble dryers, particularly those with warm clothes inside, may be too tempting for cats to ignore. Unsuspecting homeowners may close the doors to washers and dryers, trapping cats inside, or even turn the appliances on without recognizing the cats are inside. Always keep doors
Walking from page 3 dog is friendly and wants to play, the other dog may not and become territorial and reactive, possibly causing a fight. Your dog may be injured in the process. So to avoid any problems, move to the side and let the owner and dog duo pass. Or cross the street if you need to. Just be aware of your surroundings. Safety tip: Invest in a collar, leash and harness, all in one, to prevent losing control over Fido. There are
specially designed harnesses that allow you to attach a leash that won’t pull on your dog. It gently lures the dog away from possible danger. Also, carry a non-toxic, concentrated spray or a spray bottle with water just in case an aggressive dog approaches you. Or train the dog to focus attention on you. This can be done with treats. Get Fido to look you in the eyes before giving him the treat. Dog walking is a great way to get some exercise,
International Cat Care notes that the presence of water near food may deter some cats from drinking enough fluids. That’s because cats naturally hunt for food and water separately. Some cats may be fine if food and water are in the same bowl, but if you notice your cat is ignoring its water bowl, try placing it elsewhere in the home to ensure your cat gets enough fluids.
Cats want to rest and observe their surroundings from on high. Don’t deter cats from resting in such places, but make sure they’re positioned in such a way that cats can safely get down when they want to.
enjoy the outdoors and bond with your dog. Just be aware of your surroundings and learn about the possible risks and dangers when out with your dog. You will be better prepared and find the walks much more enjoyable. Norma Quintanilla is a long-time resident of Brentwood and the sole proprietor of Walking the Dog Pet Services.
