Most districts have not highlighted this type of training in the past two years as the struggles of distance learning and the COVID-19 pandemic took center stage. DISCOVERY BAY The county is thinking about changing the zoning so a developer can build apartments that Discovery Bay leaders and residents don’t want. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to explore the zoning change for the vacant lot on the corner of Sand Point Road and Discovery Bay Boulevard despite those strong objections. The change in zoning would allow Anton Development Company (ADC) to build three-story apartment buildings with a total of 170 units and 303 parking spaces. Those objecting to the project cite traffic and school congestion, aging town infrastructure, and a lack of fire, police and medical services. Supervisor Diane Burgis – whose district includes Discovery Bay – defended her decision to go against the wishes of her constituents. “I’m skeptical that the project will happen, and I understand and share the concerns of the community,” Burgis said after the vote. “I voted to authorize (the Department of Conservation and Development) to move forward with the application review and due diligence because I support the rights of property owners to have a fair and thorough process.” ADC submitted a request

Vegetation fire burns 159 acres in area 67 people lose power in unincorporated Brentwood

Strong winds fueled a 159-acre fire in a field adjacent to Walnut Boulevard and Marsh Creek Road in unincorporated Brentwood on June 9. Even though there were no reported injuries, 67 people were without power for an undetermined amount of time. When fire crews arrived just after 2:20 p.m., they reported the fire was two acres, but due to the wind it quickly ballooned, resulting in the decision to add a second alarm to the call. Responding units came from CalFire Santa Clara and Lake Napa Units, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ConFire). “We had a total of four air tankers, two ‘copters, 17 fire engines, two hand crews, and three bulldozers assigned to the incident,” said CalFire Battalion Chief Jesse Winnen. In less than 3 hours, fire crews were able to stop forward progress and reach 75% containment, but not before the fire grew to 159 acres, roughly the size of three football fields, officials said. midity, and 10-15 mph winds – helped spread the fire and make it more severe, officials said. “With the drought, with the heat, with the expected heat (over that weekend), everything is really dry,” said Winnen.”The relative humidity is dropping, and the winds are kind of the normal winds we do have out here in East Contra Costa County.” Surrounding roads were shut down – Vasco Road and Walnut Boulevard at their respective intersections with Camino Diablo and Marsh Creek Road – and weren’t expected to reopen until midnight. Pacific Gas and

Electric crews briefly shut down power, leaving 67 customers without electricity until they were able to determine the structural integrity of the poles in the area. All damaged poles will be replaced in the coming weeks. “There were a couple of structures threatened off of Walnut [Boulevard], but the structure threat has been mitigated,” Winnen said. “As far as I know, no structures were burned or destroyed. A couple of people were moved out of the area, he added, but they were allowed to return. Fire crews remained on scene through-

out the night and into the following day to prevent any potential flare-ups. The following day, Friday, June 10, at about 12:45 p.m., crews from the same agencies were called back out to the same area to battle a 50-acre vegetation fire along Vasco Road, between Walnut Boulevard and Highway 4 for about 6 hours before it was contained. Fire damages home OAKLEY A man and a cat escaped injury in a suspected electrical fire that damaged an Oakley home on June 13, an East Contra Costa Fire Protection District battalion chief said. The outdoor fire on the 3800 block of Creekside Way burned up the rear of the structure and spread into the eaves at about 6:40 p.m. before being put out some 35 minutes later. Crews from both the East Contra Costa and Contra Costa Fire Protection Districts responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze. Justin Luckhardt, the son of the homeowners, said he was watching TV when he heard “punching sounds” coming

from different parts of the house. He and a cat in the home at the time of the fire escaped safely. “What I experienced was I was watching TV and heard what sounded like someone punching the wall,” he said. “I was like ‘What is that loud noise?’ I go and open the sliding glass door and, lo and behold, my entire house is on fire. I freaked the hell out and did everything you are not supposed to do. I got my cat out and immediately called 911.” A monetary damage estimate was not immediately disclosed. With Contra Costa and other Bay Area counties seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases, health officials are reiterating their strong recommendation to wear masks indoors. Omicron subvariants, which are even more contagious than the original Omicron, are driving the recent increase in cases. Outbreaks in workplaces and schools have also sharply increased in the past few weeks. Antioch has seen 794 cases the last two weeks (population 112,848), with 441 reported in Brentwood (population 66,907), 320 in Oakley (population 42,895) and 75 reported in Discovery Bay (population 15,358). Antioch’s recent 14-day case count is the third highest of 31 county areas tracked. Brentwood’s is seventh, with Oakley 10th and Discovery Bay 21st. Concord registered the most cases

in the past 14 days: 831 (population 130,002). While masking remains optional for most public indoor settings, health officials say wearing face covering during periods of increased transmission is a simple best practice to protect against COVID-19. “There’s a lot of COVID out there right now, so it’s time to mask up in public again,” said Dr. Ori Tzvieli, health officer for Contra Costa County. Tzvieli said people should also stay home if they feel sick and get tested. He added that people eligible for booster shots should get one since protection from the COVID-19 vaccines wane over time. Local MESA team to represent state at national competition this month by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

A team of four girls from Orchard Park School in Oakley will represent California at the National MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement) competition at the end of the month. To reach the national level, Bethany Fumar, 13, Natalia Cortez, 14, Yaretzi Costilla, 13 and Bella Rose, 13, won the state-level National Engineering Design Competition earlier this month with their project titled Therm-Alert. The girls had to program a microprocessor to engineer a human-centered solution to an individual or group equity issue, and they chose to help people working outside in the heat. “Our project is a device called ThermAlert and it detects beginning symptoms of heat strokes for field workers and construction workers,” Natalia said. “It also has an interface so that family members can be alerted to the user’s temperature.” Bethany explained the device is an armband that measures user body temperature and heart rate, setting off an alarm when they reach dangerous levels. “It’s a heat stroke alerting system,” Bethany said. “When a field worker or construction worker is near heat stroke, it

will send an alarm, LED lights will light up or a buzzer will go off, and the device will send information to an app. We want to add a moisture or sweat measure to make it more precise.” To compete, the team had to submit a poster, design brief and prototype pitch, and have a live technical interview. The state competition was virtual, and the national competition will be as well. Though

disappointed the live competition in New Mexico was canceled, the team is still excited to be part of it. “It’s been a really fulfilling experience,” Natalia said, adding she had learned about different career options. “Doing this project really did open a lot of doors and it’s something that helps our community, and it gives you a sense of achievement that you were able to do

something for your community.” MESA is an extracurricular college and career preparatory program focused on increasing student diversity and achievement in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), according to Janiene Langford, a MESA director. Some 18,000 students in California participate in the program each year and enter numerous competitions. The top two teams from each MESA center then move on to regional level competition, then state and nationals. Langford said the girls have achieved something impressive with their hard work. “NEDC requires an incredible amount of work and skill combining the ability to recognize and challenge societal inequities, hardware and coding knowledge, business acumen, written communication skills, and public speaking,” Langford said. “This is no easy competition and the teams who advance to Regionals and State are fierce. This is the second year in a row Bethany, Natalia, and Yaretzi have competed at the State level.” MESA was founded in California in 1970 and has grown to a national program with chapters in nine states. Festa Italia brings the Italian experience to Pittsburg by Jake Menez Staff Writer

While there’s no substitute for the old-world charm of summering in Italy, Pittsburg’s upcoming Festa Italia could be a close second. The event on the weekend of June 24 in John Buckley Square promises to be “a cultural journey filled with authentic Italian food, music, art and tradition,” according to its website. The weekendlong party will include a bocce ball tournament and a spaghetti eating contest in addition to a lineup of entertainment featuring musical acts such as Louis Prima Jr. as well as comedians such as Mike Marino. “It’s really important that we keep the Italian culture alive,” says the event’s promoter, Anthony Lane. “It’s such a rich culture in so many ways and I think it’s something people will enjoy celebrating.” The festival’s greatest strength, Lane says, is its lineup of all-Italian entertainment. The half dozen musical acts include

a mix of local talent, such as Pittsburg’s own Vocal Ease and The Boogeymen, and national acts such as Rhode Island’s Cory Pesaturo. Lane’s own band, the Anthony “Nino” Lane Band out of Monterey, will play the festival as well. The other aspect to best showcase Italian culture is the food, according to Lane. “I’m very passionate about the wide range of food we’re bringing to the table,” he says. “No pun intended.” Lane said he was particular about the type of food that would be offered at the event. Knowing the importance of traditional Italian cuisine and the difficulty in finding some of those dishes, even at Italian restaurants, led him to select an extensive menu that ranges from authentic Italian-style pizza to more uncommon dishes such as pasta carbonara and seafood dishes like calamari. “The support I’m getting from the city is incredible. What excited you before being a parent that you can revive? What interests would you like to explore? Brainstorming with a significant other, a friend, or even a professional coach can spark the inner fire you let smolder while you nurtured others. It is time to replace the meaningful experience of parenting with other activities that bring out your passions and provide you meaning. Experts also advise to keep a journal to work out your grief and sense of loss as you move forward to this next phase of living. Finally, may I invite you to consider rekindling your marriage and other relationships? With children, we often sacrifice adult relationships for our children. This includes time with your spouse now that you are not revolving around the children. This next stage — the empty nest stage — can be the most empowering time of your life. next chapter of your life? You want to support them as they transition to independence. Yet, you are also acknowledging you need more for yourself, too. Since a child moving out of the house is a healthy and normal occurrence, the symptoms of empty nest syndrome often go unrecognized. This can result in a loss of purpose for a parent, especially if the parent is a full time, stay at home parent. How do you create a healthy transition during this natural stage of life? To begin, it is important to recognize what you are experiencing. There are three major characteristics of empty nesters: 1. Grief; 2. A sense of emptiness; 3. The combination of fear and worry. Once you identify what you are experiencing and recognize the symptoms, you can manage your own wellness to be present for your family and especially for yourself. As you have named what you are experiencing, acknowledge that this is normal. However, to dwell at this stage may cause depression, anxiety and other mental and physical issues. Fortunately, this is about coping to rejuvenate yourself. In the age of technology, it is easy to text, Facetime and Zoom with your children. However, you want to respect your adult child’s space and allow

I gained myself – finally Editor’s note: In honor of Pride Month, Brentwood resident Emily Banks shares her story of self discovery. I sat on the couch that night, like all other nights, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert playing in the background, the kids upstairs in bed, my husband and I uest settling down for a comment show or two before I fell asleep, myself. I opened my mouth to comment on the opening monologue and instead said, “I think I am gay,” as if continuing an ongoing conversation. The words tumbled out on their own. I closed my mouth. But I couldn’t put the words back inside. I glanced at my husband. He looked ... resigned. Not a stupid man, he probably saw the writing on the wall when I told him two years earlier I thought I was bi. Or perhaps it was my ongoing crush on Mary Louise Parker that showed my hand. Either way, the look on his face was not one of shock. I burst into tears. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. It had been building in me for weeks, months, years, a lifetime. Detached from myself for a moment, I wondered idly when this had started. After the birth of my daughter, when I started Googling “can you be gay at 35?” In junior high, when I felt that SPARK when Melissa L. accidentally brushed my arm in PE? Earlier? My rainbow obsession. Was that a sign? Did it matter? The truth was, I’d always known on some level. It was just never safe for me. Raised in a conservative, fundamentalist Christian home, I would have been sent off to Pray The Gay Away, isolated on some farm in Idaho with nothing but a devotional and a Bible to read, until I put myself so far

back in the closet I’d never see the light of day. Conversion therapy at its finest. I can’t remember, now, just two and half years later, what we talked about that night. How we left things. It took me a few weeks to feel like I could inhabit my own body again. We tried all the usual things of an ending marriage. Counseling. Date nights. Opening the marriage. But it simply wasn’t meant to be. Our forever was coming to a close, and I was sad. Relieved in a way, but sad. My husband had been by my side for some of the hardest years of my life, when my health failed and I didn’t know if I’d live to see 40. How could I embark on a life separate from him? How could I exist without him by my side? I didn’t know if it was possible. But what I did know, without any doubt, was that the status quo was not working anymore. Depression hovered over me like Eeyore’s rain cloud, coloring every step I took. Each breath was an effort. One foot in front of the other, I repeated to myself. “Just until the kids are in college,” I told myself once. My kids, at the time, were 9 and 7. College was a long way off. On outings into San Francisco with my kids, I looked wistfully at the women I saw holding hands. I wanted to be one of them. I wanted to belong. I wanted to feel like I fit in my own life. I didn’t want this unnamed secret living in me, this longing for a certain type of connection that I was lacking. I didn’t want to be lacking. I was scared, terrified, of what I was risking. Of what I was walking away from. A steady marriage. A man who loved me. A family unit that I’d always wanted. Parents who supported me. Brothers. And I wasn’t wrong to be scared. I lost a lot. I lost my parents. I lost my brothers. I lost my kids’ extended family. I lost the security of my marriage. But I didn’t lose my family. My husband stood by me, and remains a friend and loyal supporter. My kids adore me, and I them. My local friends made me a cake when I told them I was divorcing. “You can do this!” It read. My distant friends sent cards and emails and left comments and sent so, so much love. But mostly I gained. I gained selfrespect and certainty. I gained freedom. I gained comfort in my own skin. Now, I absent-mindedly trace circles on my girlfriend’s hand with my thumb, The Late Show playing in the background. Her cat paws at the strings of my hoodie. I rest my head on her shoulder. “I love you,” she whispers. I smile, I float, I soar. I gained myself. – Emily Banks

Liberty champion grappler commits to Iowa by Michael Dixon Correpondent

Not long after she won the California Interscholastic Federation State wrestling championship, Liberty High School wrestler Samantha Calkins was contacted by people she’d been hoping to hear from. The University of Iowa expressed interest in having her visit the school and ultimately, hoped that Calkins would attend Iowa as a student and be a part of the women’s wrestling team. The Hawkeyes were Calkins’ first choice but she also wanted to keep her options open. Other finalists included Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, North Central University in Minnesota and Iowa Wesleyan University, which is roughly an hour away from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The timing was fortuitous. Samantha was already planning on going to Iowa for a tournament that her brother, David Calkins, was wrestling in at that time. So, on that trip, Samantha also went to Iowa City to see the campus. She liked what she saw. One week after

her visit, Calkins made her decision to attend and wrestle for the University of Iowa official. “The coach there will help support my goals and what I want to do in college and out,” Calkins said. “I love the campus. They have a lot of resources for student-athletes. And when I stepped on

it, it just felt like home.” Women’s wrestling is still relatively new in college sports. But Calkins will be joining a powerhouse program. Iowa has long been known as one of the best programs in men’s wrestling and could be the same for women. Iowa -- a Big Ten school -- is the first university from

a Power Five conference (Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference) to officially sponsor women’s wrestling, according to the NCAA. Calkins is staying busy in wrestling before going to Iowa. In June, she’ll be wrestling at the Junior Girl National Dual Team event for California. In July, she’ll be defending her National Championship in Fargo. Once she gets to Iowa, Calkins has lofty goals in wrestling. “I want to be a four-time NCAA All-American, a multiple-time national champion and a multiple-time World team member,” she said. “And don’t want my career to end after college. I want my career to go on to world circuits after.” Calkins also has an idea of what she’ll study at Iowa and what she wants to do in her career after college and wrestling. “I’m under the Pre-Physician assistant program,” she said. “I want to go into medicine and get my Masters for Physician Assistants -- then work on my practice.”

The Brentwood Blast Williams 14u squad went 5-0 and took the championship at the Salute to Heroes Tournament. The Blast Williams team has been playing together since they were on the 9U squad, and now finished their last and final tournament, winning the 14u division with a farewell championship. “We are all so proud of these boys and the amazing coaching staff developing and teaching the fundamentals of baseball to these players,” the team said in a statement. “Lifelong friendships have been established,and the memories that the players have created are for a lifetime.” The team is composed of coach Eric, Mike, Jay and Jeff. Brannan Island boat ramp, day-use area open

The boat launch ramp and the nearby day-use area at the Brannan Island State Recreation Area are open for weekend use in Rio Vista.

California State Parks has announced the limited, partial reopening of Brannan Island State Recreation Area, located at 17645 State Highway 160, Rio Vista. The boat launch ramp and the nearby dayuse area are open on the weekends to the public from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sept. 1. The other areas of the park will remain closed. Earlier this year, State Parks announced the temporary closure of Brannan Island. American Land & Leisure worked with the department to operate the State Recreation Area starting in 2013 but ended its operations on April 1, 2022. The department is seeking a new park operator.

Brannan Island is a maze of waterways through the Delta. Located northeast of San Francisco Bay, the park unit has countless islands and marshes with many wildlife habitats and opportunities for recreation, including boating and swimming. State Parks reminds visitors to recreate responsibly as COVID-19 is still present. Prior to leaving home, visitors are asked to check the status of the park units they want to visit to find out what restrictions and guidelines are in place. Having a back-up plan in case their destination is crowded is recommended. For additional guidelines and safety tips, visit parks.ca.gov/COVID19.

Police: All fireworks are illegal in county Illegal and ‘safe and sane’ types are both banned As the Fourth of July approaches, the Brentwood Police Department recently reminded residents about the dangers associated with fireworks and the use of firearms when celebrating. Contra Costa County is a “fireworks-free-zone”. The possession or use of fireworks of all types and sizes (including Safe and Sane fireworks) are banned in the county. The difference between illegal and

‘safe and sane’ fireworks is as follows: Fireworks are defined under state law in two categories– dangerous, and ‘safe and sane.’ Dangerous are always illegal except for when used by licensed operators. ‘Safe and sane’ fireworks are sold by licensed retailers from June 28-July 6 and can be used by the public, but are subject to limitations, according to the state fire marshal. ‘Safe and sane’ fireworks are sparklers, spinners, fountains and snap caps. “The Brentwood Police Department is taking a zero-tolerance approach when dealing with these violations,” the city said in a news release. “It’s important to also keep in mind dry conditions create some additional safety concerns. High weeds and water stricken lawns are extremely vulnerable to stray embers or

sparks caused by fireworks. Please avoid the temptation of putting yourself and your neighbors at risk.” Possession of fireworks that leave the ground or explode may be a felony and could result in fines of up to $5,000 and imprisonment, officials said. Additionally, shooting a gun into the air is against the law. Bullets fired into the air return at some point and descend at 300 to 400 feet per second, which can be dangerous because theycan penetrate roofs and cause damage to property and residents, officials said. Police statistics show that fireworks and celebratory gunfire seriously injure thousands of people annually, officials said. On July 4, the police department will be assigning additional officers to patrol residential neighborhoods and

proactively enforce fireworks violations, officials said. Authorities ask anyone who witnesses a violation to contact the 24hour dispatch center at 925-809-7911. Instead of setting off fireworks, the police department encourages people to consider free July 4th fireworks displays in nearby cities. he has been in touch with both Brentwood and Oakley police departments to set up active shooter exercises on the high school campuses over the summer. “This way, law enforcement has a good feeling for our campuses and what classrooms look like and so forth,” Volta said. “They all have keys to our facilities, and the school resource officers (SRO) have keys, so no one will be waiting outside of a door for a custodian to show up.” Volta added that all school sites in his district had been through ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) active shooter training just before the pandemic, and school resource officers were getting a refresher course this summer. “Our Heritage High School SRO just finished his certification to be an ALICE trainer, and we regularly update our safety plans for this type of thing,” Volta said. “Unfortunately, we do intruder shutdown drills as much as we do fire drills. It’s just one of the many trainings we do at the beginning of the year with our teachers.” Brentwood Brentwood Union School District Superintendent Dr. Dana Eaton said his district has a strong relationship with the Brentwood Police Department and has worked on ALICE training to help prepare students and staff on how to deal with an intruder. “We started trainings with staff in 2018 that have included multiple staff presentations along with actual role-playing scenarios, without students, where staff are

Staff also promote Say Something, an anonymous early-warning reporting system that warns principals and police when a tip is received about a potentially threatening situation.. “Often, tips that come in late at night, or early in the morning are acted upon by our partners in the Brentwood Police Department prior to school starting,” Eaton said. “In almost every school shooting that has taken place, someone, or multiple people, had knowledge prior that could have prevented the tragedies that followed.” Brentwood has made physical changes to campuses over the past 10 years, adding fences, locked gates and hundreds of security cameras. There is also an internal system requiring volunteers arriving on campus to scan their driver’s license through a system that runs a background check for criminal activity. Mark Johnson, Delta Station Commander for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, said his officers do their best to familiarize themselves with local school campuses and meet kids under non-stressful circumstances. “We do ‘recess with a cop’ at the local schools, and that gives us a familiarity with the campuses, so we know where things are and what doors are locked,” Johnson said. “Our deputies carry active shooter kits with ballistic helmets and heavy vests, and they can put that on very quickly and go in when necessary.” Johnson said that active shooter situations in schools are handled the same way they are anywhere else. “We try to get there as soon as possible and the first officer that gets there goes in,” he said. “We are not waiting, we are not setting up a perimeter. We are going in. Powell’s next film, “Devotion,” is the true story of two fighter pilots during the Korean War and features support from the Patriot Jet Team and use of the CineJet camera system.
