Oakley woman missing since January by Jake Menez Staff Writer
OAKLEY A hand-written note might contain clues as to the location of a missing Oakley woman’s body. The family of Alexis Gabe, the woman who disappeared in January and is now believed the victim of foul play, released information from the Antioch police on social media that may lead to the discovery of her body. The Facebook post from

July 8 by Alexis’ father Gwyn includes a scan of hand-written directions to a location in Pioneer, about an hour east of Sacramento, as well as a July 7 letter from Antioch police Sgt. James Stenger alleging the handwritten note belonged to Marshall Jones. Jones was the ex-boyfriend of Gabe and law enforcement’s primary suspect in her disappearance. He was killed by police on June 1 near Seattle during an altercation in which he charged officers while brandishing a knife. drought salinity barrier if needed along the West False River twice within a 10-year time frame. The barrier, which would remain in place for up to 20 months, would improve longterm planning and provide the state with greater flexibility to respond to future droughts. They are growing more frequent and extreme due to climate change, state and federal scientists have asserted. The existing drought salinity barrier along the West False River, which was installed in 2021 following Gov. Gavin Newsom’s executive order, has helped
BRENTWOOD Mayor Joel Bryant delivered the annual ‘State of the City’ address as part of the July 12 City Council meeting, reiterating many of the goals that are part of the current Strategic Plan. Bryant provided a look at Brentwood’s demographics. As of January 2022, the city has a reported population of 64,032 residents, according to Bryant. The median annual household income is $115,167. Bryant reported that the city has an overall budget of $315 million and a $72 million General Fund budget. There are 30% reserves “available for emergency contingencies.” The General Fund is used at the city’s discretion while the overall budget includes money that must be spent on specific items such as water, sewer, garbage and development fees. Bryant recapped recent city projects, such as the fire district consolidation, as well as discussed upcoming projects that are part of the city’s current Strategic Plan, including security improvements to the parking structure in downtown Brentwood and the construction of the Innovation Center. The center, according to Bryant, is a major endeavor that is expected to add 8,000 potential jobs. The City Council is ex-

REGIONAL Department of Water Resources has released a draft environmental impact report analyzing potential construction effects of future drought salinity barriers in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The 2021 Emergency Drought Salinity Barrier Project consists of constructing a temporary rock barrier across West False River in the SacramentoSan Joaquin Delta. The state says a salinity bar-
rier is needed in response to the current drought. This is important, according to one state water department official. “Keeping saltwater from the central Delta is a p r i o r i t y, as a large portion of the state’s freshwater supplies travel through this part of the Delta,” said water department spokeswoman Nancy Vogel. “The bar-

Bristow Middle School’s new theater should open by October deadline by Jenna Hards Correspondent
The long-awaited Bristow Middle School Theater enters its final stages this summer with crews working to get the building ready by the October deadline. With classroom spaces for Bristow’s arts programs, a stage, dressing rooms and storage, this new theater is an example of Contra Costa County’s Measure B in action. Prior to this year, Bristow Middle School was the only one of the three middle schools that did not have a dedicated theater. However, after planning, community outreach and input, Britsow’s theater and music programs will have larger spaces in which to rehearse. The additions also include about 30 new parking spaces behind the theater and a staging area for storage or set building. The new theater is to be named after current Brentwood Union School District board member Emil Geddes, a contributor to the district since 1967 who has been a teacher, counselor and board member for the district. He is also the head of Geddes Music, a local music store and instrument rental company. “It’s our future,” Geddes said about his love for education. “I believe that people in education should be, and are, dedicated to the children in the community.” Geddes

The theater dedication announcement happened during a school district meeting where several members congratulated Geddes and spoke about his time and impact on their lives.
“I didn’t expect it. I’m honored. That legacy is so wonderful,” Geddes said smiling. Robert Schmidt, Chief Business Official for the school district, has also been overseeing the construction progress of the theater. Schmidt said the theater will also include a row of seats from the original Bristow Theater.

The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps returned to the competition field for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and East County residents got a taste of this year’s show during their Family Night showcase on July 7. The event at Ohmstede Field at Liberty High School featured performances by the A, B, and C Corps, along with the Special Needs Guard. Between the performances, there was even a surprise proposal between two of the corps members. The three corps are presenting allnew field shows this year, combining original compositions and time-tested favorites, while the Special Needs Guard, whose competition season has ended for the year, came back to perform their original routine to “This Is Me” from the musical The Greatest Showman. Each corps consists of brass, battery (mobile percussion), front ensemble, and color guard. The C Corps, a beginning-level group consisting of students 8-14 years old, performed “It’s About Time.” The set includes the “Doctor Who Theme,” “What Time Is It” from High School Musical 2, “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Freddie Mercury and Queen, and Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.” According to the group’s website, the program is about exploring the concept of time and how we experience it in our daily lives. The title is also a little play on words, considering it’s been a year since the corps has been able to play together. “Our members and staff are so excited for the return of drum corps, and we’ve been itching to show you what we can do now that the gang’s back togeth-

The world champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps held their annual family showcase at Liberty High School in Brentwood on July 7. er,” said Ben Kane, Blue Devil C Program Coordinator and Brass Caption Head. “We’re trying some new things with regards to body movement and choreography this year, which is a big deal for the C Corps. We’re looking at the activity with a fresh set of eyes and asking – how can we move forward?” In four original movements, the B Corps program, under the leadership of Efrain Hinojosa, celebrates the nuance of individuality and explores self-expression and connection with others. From discovering unique strengths and being aware of the impact we have on others, to recognizing the relationship between individuality and empathy, before ending with the power of the individual, corps members and composers John Meehan, Sean Clark, and Chavadith Tantavirojn take us on a journey of self-exploration

B Corps is made up of students aged 14-19, residing within a 500-mile radius of Concord, the group’s headquarters. “This show is designed to provide a positive and relatable message for our membership as they return to the field after a long hiatus,” said Program Coordinator Chris Carrasco. “We are excited for each of them to bring their unique personality, talents, and drive to the corps as they learn to work together as Blue Devils.” For their 65th anniversary, they’ve designed their program, “Tempus Blue,” which travels the timeline of the aforementioned color, from the rise of civilizasee Blue Devils page 18

education leadership students to have an opportunity to promote inclusive environments and practice servant leadership,” said Dr. Steve Amaro, an assistant principal at the school. Rachel Hancock, a fellow district principal assigned to Freedom for the summer, said she enjoyed watching the students have fun. “I’m loving that everyone is enjoying the games and I am really thankful for Freedom leadership,” she said. Local softball team vying to be best in West by Michael Dixon Correspondent
The softball team from East County Little League’s Senior Division has proven itself to be the best team in the area. Soon, it will get a chance to play against the best teams in the Western United States and possibly beyond. The East County team won the District 4 Championship by defeating a team from Richmond 2-1 in a best-ofthree series. That set up another best-ofthree series against a team from Sacramento’s Airport Little League, though three games were not needed. The East County team swept a pair of games on Saturday, July 9, winning both decisively –19-1 and 18-3. That gave the East County team a ticket to the Western Regional Tournament in Missoula, Montana from July 22-26. Other teams there will be a team from Missoula, another Montana team, a Southern California squad as well as teams from Hawaii, Arizona and Washington state competing in a round-robin format. “The expectation is to go out, have some fun and celebrate our success,” East County manager Art Ramos said. “This is the furthest East County Softball has been in a long time. Hopefully we can take this tournament, make something out of it and make our way to the World Series in Delaware.” Only the Western Regional champion will get a chance to play at the

Senior League Softball World Series, which will be held in Lower Sussex, Delaware from Aug. 1-6. Regardless of how the Western Regional goes, though, the East County team is guaranteed a minimum of seven more games. The Senior softball division is made up of 13- to 16-year-old girls. Bella Hernandez has been East County’s top pitcher but it’s been a team effort. Ro-
salyn Zermeno and Savannah Lohmeier have split time at catcher, second baseman Sophia Guardado, shortstop Destiny Criswell and speedy centerfielder Trinity Mendoza have been defensive anchors up the middle. Leyla Ramos has been East County’s main first baseman, while Siana Wood and Callie Porter have handled third base. Alyssa Price and Kendall
Johnston are left and right fielders, respectively. Janessa Simonetta and Kirra Kone have also pitched behind Hernandez. Ramos, as well as his coaches, Dan Johnston and Julie Hernandez, have liked seeing the team develop over time. “It’s been very enjoyable for me,” see Softball page 11
Heritage High alum gets MLB All-Star nod by Michael Dixon Correspondent
Oakland Athletics pitcher Paul Blackburn is the first player from Heritage High School to reach Major League Baseball. He’s also the first Heritage alum to be an MLB All-Star. Blackburn, who was named to the American League All-Star Team on Sunday, July 10, is enjoying the best season of his career. Through his start on Friday, July 8, Blackburn had a 3.36 ERA, 1.20 walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP) and 73 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched. Additionally, while Oakland has struggled throughout most of the season, Blackburn has managed to maintain a winning individual record, going 6-4. Blackburn struggled to find a reaction upon finding out that he was an All-Star. “I’m just kind of at a loss for words,” Blackburn said on Athletics.com. “The journey that it’s taken to get here has been incredible. I don’t know. I’m really lost for words. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to play in a big league All-Star Game. It’s incredible.” Blackburn’s journey to his first All-Star Game has been anything but a smooth path. He was drafted out of high school by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the

2012 supplemental draft, No. 56 overall. The right-hander remained in the Chicago organization until the 2016 trade deadline when he was dealt to the Seattle Mariners. Blackburn stayed in the Seattle organization for the remainder of that season. In the offseason, he was traded to Oakland.
On July 1, 2017, Blackburn made his MLB debut. He went six innings, allowed one unearned run, surrendered three hits and walked one in a no-decision. He see All-Star page 11

Softball from page 10 Ramos said. “It’s my first year coaching a senior softball team. It’s been a great experience to see the girls come from Day 1 to where they are now, to make it this far within the league.” One of the important steps in getting to Montana is raising the funds necessary to make the trip. To that end, the team is having a car wash on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17 at Straw Hat Pizza on Lone Tree Way in Brentwood from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (both days) and is accepting donations. “We’re gladly accepting donations,” Ramos said. “It’s short notice, trying to scramble to make sure that every girl has the funds to make the tournament.”
All-Star from page 10 earned his first MLB win in his next outing, allowing only one earned run with eight hits and one walk over 7.2 innings. Those were part of a successful rookie campaign. During that 2017 season, he posted a 3.22 ERA and 1.26 WHIP and went 3-1 in 10 starts. The following seasons were more of a struggle for Blackburn, as he bounced between the majors and the minors. He appeared in 20 total Major League games for the A’s from 2018-2021, with a 7.60 ERA and 1.65 WHIP with 55 strikeouts in 79.1 innings. His manager in Oakland, Mark Kotsay, cited Blackburn’s journey, which he said “is probably unlike another other

All-Star that’s going to be on that team this year.” “He’s dealt with a lot of adversity throughout his career,” Kotsay said of Blackburn. “He’s had to have the right mindset to battle back. The word I used for him is ‘grit.’ The determination and perseverance that it’s taken to continue his path and believe in it. He should feel really rewarded.” Blackburn was the only Oakland player named to the American League team, though others could join him in the coming days as other players drop out for various reasons. Delta Valley Baseball wins Casey Yokum Tournament The 2025 Delta Valley Baseball team, composed of Heritage and Liberty Baseball players, recently won the Casey Yokum Tournament in Reno, Nevada. The squad went 6-0 in the tournament, and currently has a record of 17-0-1. The team is composed of AJ Eissner, Bobby Droszcz, Cameron Leggier, Chase Miller, Cooper Melissare, Giovanni Cadena, Jace Bernard, Jack Roberts, Jordan “JJ” Kinnaird, Josh Kelleher, Julian Aguilar, Michael Mesnickow, Nate Grube, Peyton Donleavy, Rane Miller and Tristan Ainsworth. The team is coached by Mark Petures and Greg Gonzales.
The 2025 Delta Valley Baseball team, composed of Heritage and Liberty baseball players, won the recent Casey Yokum Tournament.
In a statement, the team said “During these six games, each player had a role in generating momentum to make it to that (tournament) championship game, from a multitude of amazing hits, home runs, steals, defensive plays and pitching. There was no stopping them in the championship game and these boys battled, coming from a small deficit to getting solid hits, taking care of defense, and having pitching that just shut it down at the end. For a team that was newly formed this year not a bad record of 17-0-1. Keep up the good work coaches and boys.”

GAMES & PUZZLES Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, (916) 939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website, www.nationwideposting.com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 22-02746CA. time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. to Oakley Police Detective Tyler Horn. “After a handwriting comparison, these handwritten directions were apparently written by Marshall Jones,” Horn said in a quote as part of Gabe’s Facebook post. “The directions are from Vacaville, CA (Marshall’s sister’s house) to a remote location in Pioneer, CA. The handwritten directions were obtained after the execution of a search warrant.” Investigators initially believed the directions would lead them to where Jones buried Gabe’s body, according to Stenger. But efforts to locate the body after following the directions yielded no results, even with the use of cadaver dogs. “We know that Marshall Jones wrote these directions to Pioneer and believe he used them to dispose of Alexis’ body near where the directions end,” Stenger wrote in his letter to her parents. “A friend of Marshall’s came forward after Marshall was killed and gave a statement that Marshall called the friend about two weeks

due to the challenge for inexperienced searchers. Stacey Dorsey, the West Coast Director for the KlaasKids Foundation, wrote in a statement that she had met with Horn on July 1 in Pioneer in an effort to determine possible next steps in the search. The foundation had first lent its resources to the search for Alexis Gabe in late April. “In my 10 plus years working with law enforcement, I can honestly say I have never seen such dedication and thoroughness,” Dorsey wrote. “We will continue to standby and study the information for new potential search areas.” Law enforcement echoed Dorsey’s statement, reaffirming that their own efforts would continue as well. “We have not given up on finding Alexis,” Stenger wrote. “We are continuing to search and continuing to follow up on any leads that we get.” As of press time, Oakley police had not responded to requests for further comment. before Alexis disappeared.” According to Stenger, the friend and Jones determined that the best way to dispose of a body would be to bury it in a forest or to hide it in a septic tank. Stenger wanted to “make it clear” that the friend thought Jones was kidding about killing Gabe. “We have not been able to locate anyone Marshall knew in the Pioneer area, and do not know why he chose this location,” he continued. “We do know that all the residences and businesses in that area have septic tanks.” In a subsequent Facebook post, Gwyn said Horn had taken the family to Pioneer on July 7 to show them the locations that had been searched since the discovery of the directions in February. According to Gynn Gabe, investigators have searched over 200 acres in the area over the past several months with help from more than 100 search teams from Contra Costa, Amador, El Dorado, and Placer counties. Gabe noted that areas of the forest had not yet been searched

The Blue Devils are the most decorated corps in DCI history. They were founded in 1957 by Ann and Tony Odello, and initially were an all-male percussion ensemble and an all-female majorette team. By the following year, glockenspiels (bells) had been added to the percussion division, and in 1961, color guard (flags), had been included. This led to success as a junior corps, and from 1957-70, they remained undefeated at the California State Championships.

The release of the draft environmental report kicks off a 45-day public comment period from now until Aug. 22. Until then, the public can review the proposed project and provide comment. The water department will host a virtual public hearing on the draft report on July 27. Details on how to join the meeting will be made available on the project’s website prior to the event. Information will also be posted on social media channels. The existing emergency drought barrier is scheduled to be removed by Nov. 30 as conditions allow, according to the state. From the time the Blue Devils became a full-fledged drum and bugle corps in the late 1960s and began touring and competing on the national level in 1973, they were a force to be reckoned with. According to their website, between 1975 and today, the Blue Devils have never placed out of the top five and have won the DCI world title an unprecedented 19 times. In 2005, they won the prestigious World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Holland. Since its inception, the Blue Devils have added performing arts programs for
youth and young adults and also offer entertainment services for corporate and other events. Their goal is to develop personal character through challenging physical, emotional, mental, and social activities while promoting the values of dedication, hard work, and commitment to a team effort, according to their website.
