BRENTWOOD The Brentwood City Council unanimously approved the sale of 101 Sand Creek Road, the former site of the Los Medanos Brentwood campus, to Sand Creek Orthopedic Associates to develop a new orthopedic center that would see potential job opportunities brought to the city. The vote took place during the council’s July 26 meeting following a presentation by Josh Ewen, senior analyst with the city’s economic development department in which Ewen provided an overview of the city-owned property and how the sale would benefit Brentwood. According to Ewen, the roughly 30,000-square-foot building sits on a three-acre site

and has a fair market value of $1.6 million in its current state. It is part of the Brentwood Center shopping complex located off of Sand Creek Road, which contains six other independently-owned properties. Part of the appeal of this business center is
its proximity to a major intersection, Sand Creek Road and Brentwood Boulevard, that is already seeing other residential and commercial development, Ewen said. Sale of the building to Sand Creek Orthopedic Associates
is expected to close on Jan. 31, 2023. Sand Creek Orthopedic Associates is a subsidiary of the Walnut Creek-based medical group Golden State Orthopedic and Spine. see Center page 18

REGIONAL City Council hopefuls in Brentwood and Oakley have until Aug. 12 to file papers for their candidacies. Approved candidates for both cities will appear on the General Election ballot on Nov. 8. This year’s city council elections will be district-based as
opposed to the at-large elections in previous years. Both cities approved district plans in the last year, based on 2020 Census population numbers. The data was used to determine appropriate district lines. This brings both elections in line with the California Voting Rights Act, which bans at-large election methods

REGIONAL “[On] July 8th, 2017, I called [my girlfriend] and my mother from a bridge and said goodbye,” said Alicia Lopez, an Emergency Room nurse. “I sat down and called the suicide hotline, who called help for me. If not for that, I wouldn’t be here.” Lopez elected to use the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline because she says that police officers are not always trained to handle someone on a bridge, at their breaking point, and ready to jump. These centers know how to bring someone back to a sense of self that allows you a moment to take a breath, she said. “When you’re in that fleeting moment you just want everything to stop,” Lopez said. “When you’re talking to people trained to handle these situations, they use harmless language, they know how to help get you grounded in the moment.” If someone is having a suicidal, mental health and/or substance use crisis, they can now call or text 988 — the new 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – instead of 911, or start an online chat at 988lifeline.org/chat. When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors who are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network, see 988 page 18

Discovery Bay woman writes third spy novel New book delves deeper into character by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent
Jan McCleery, Discovery Bay resident and local activist, has published the third book in her spy novel series. Titled “Finding Jessie Monroe,” this installment takes the heroine of the first two novels and digs deeper into the character as she goes undercover to discover the source of a plot to bring America to civil war. “The heroine in my series is a CIA Agent, highly technical – leveraging my background in software security, satellites, complex systems – skilled in martial arts, and fearless,” McCleery said. “In ‘Finding Jessie Monroe,’ this third book, our heroine has to face the fact that she has always hidden under her various personas, her CIA covers, but finally must face her demons and find herself.” McCleery said receiving good feed-

White Pony Express, a nonprofit that aims to eliminate hunger and poverty, according to its website, is expanding to meet the growing need for healthy food in the immediate area. Hunger is on the rise due to inflation and supply chain disruptions and fresh, nutritious food is out of reach for many, the organization said in a statement. White Pony Express seeks volunteers to drive and help those in need, organization officials said. Drivers can use either their personal vehicles or one of the organization’s fleet vehicles. “If you have a little time to spare and a good driving record, we would love to welcome you to our team of food rescue heroes,” the organization said in a statement. “Together, we can end hunger in our county and beyond!” For more information or to volunteer, contact Mandy and Ana at volunteer@ whiteponyexpress.org. lead and takes inspiration from current events for her plot lines. Fellow author Greg Wyss said her books are getting progressively better. “This most recent book is probably the best of the three,” Wyss said. “She’s very prescient, she’s making a statement and there’s a political story and she was very predictive on different things. This is a fictionalized version of current events. She has a great heroine, kind of a modern-day wonder woman who is a very interesting character, very strong, but also flawed.” Her spy novels are not McCleery’s first foray into authorhood. She also wrote her memoirs, “Class of ’67,” and wrote a children’s book simplifying the issues behind California’s water wars called “The Fable of the Farmer and the Fish.” Locally, McCleery is also known for taking a stand against the twin tunnels project and her work with the nonprofit Save the California Delta Alliance, whose mission is to help maintain a healthy waterway for everyone who uses it. McCleery’s books, including the three titles in “The Secret Lives of Jessie Monroe,” are all available on www. amazon.com.

New leaders, new year at two area schools Ron Nunn Elementary, Edna Hill Middle School welcome new principals by Jenna Hards Correspondent
Brentwood’s Ron Nunn Elementary School and Edna Hill Middle School will be welcoming new principals this school year. Ron Nunn Elementary School Ron Nunn Elementary will be welcoming a new principal this school year. Nicholas Casey will be stepping into this new role and said he is excited to work with new students, staff, and parents. Casey has worked in the Brentwood Union School District for the past 11 years as a teacher, and worked as a principal in another district for the past six years. “I’m most looking forward to really getting to know the Ron Nunn community,” Casey said. “The students and staff and everybody that I’ve met so far have been super nice and welcoming.” Casey was also a student at Ron Nunn. He was a part of the first fifth-grade class when the school opened in 1991-1992, and he has come full circle now as their new principal. “My biggest goal to start the school year is building those relationships with everybody,” he said. “And then also reviewing our current data in terms of how the students are performing and reviewing our school site plan and making adjustments to see what kind of next steps we need to take to continue to run the great

school that it is.” With experience in both being a principal and an elementary school teacher, Casey said he is inspired by the progress he gets to see students make in the classroom, and appreciates the wider impact that working in administration provides to his students. “I just want to tell them (the Ron Nunn community) ‘Thank you so much for welcoming me with open arms to Ron Nunn, and for those people that I haven’t yet met, I look forward to meeting and working with you. I know that we’re going to have a lot of fun together,’” Casey said. Ron Nunn’s school year started July 28 and the school’s office has also been open. Questions for Casey can be sent to his email: ncasey@brentwood.k12.ca.us.
Summer heat got you down?
Edna Hill Middle School Alongside welcoming back old and new students, Edna Hill Middle School will also be welcoming a new principal, Leonor Medina. Medina has worked in the Brentwood Union School District for many years. Medina started at Adams Middle School in 2006 before moving to Edna Hill and working as their Vice Principal in 2018. The motivation for connection with students led Medina to this new position as well as her passion for helping students through their middle school years. “I was inspired by the idea that I was making an impact in my classes, but those are just four walls that you can control completely. And I thought I wanted to make a greater impact,” Medina said. As a new principal, Medina said she wants to connect with the community and strengthen Edna Hill’s programs. She also recognizes that middle school is a time of transition and wants to help her students feel supported and have a sense of community. “I think the main goal in this position is trying to really figure out who I am as a principal, connecting with the staff and students and community. And I think about our themes, specifically, together, we can move mountains, that if we come together as a school staff and community that we will be able to move those mountains as they arise,” Medina explained. “I’m huge on belonging, and so that idea that Edna Hill is a place where everyone that’s here belongs here is important to me. And I want them to know that and believe it.” Edna Hill also started on July 28. For more information, visit the Edna Hill middle school website at ehs-brentwood-ca.schoolloop.com.

Money can be hard to come by at times, but Vice President Tim Lear remains vigilant in his efforts to help others and keep his community active. “We help everybody,’ he said. “Anyone who wants to get food in our food line is welcome; I don’t care if you’re rich or poor. If you’re in line and you need food, you take it. I give to everybody.” While the Thursday scene appears normal nowadays, the early pandemic created many challenges for the center’s mission. ‘Many hands make light work’ is the old English proverb. This adage holds true for the Oakley Senior Citizens’ food line distribution, where over a dozen seniors and volunteers unload and categorize palettes of food for those in need. Thursday mornings, a long line forms around the block trailing from 215 Second St. in Oakley, long before the doors open at 1 p.m. Boxes upon boxes filled with food are quickly left barren, a sign of a good deed done for members and volunteers. This food distribution is just one of several ways Oakley seniors stay active and involved in their community. Oakley Senior Citizens’ mission is to provide services and programs to encourage social connection, healthy aging, and well-being. A licensed 501 [c] (3) non-profit organization, they originally opened a food line to fill the gap left when Antioch’s food line disbanded. To prepare for the distribution, truckloads of food from the Food Bank of Contra Costa are delivered, which include a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and baked goods, as well as pre-packed boxes of dry and canned goods. The center also purchases some nonperishables with funds from grants and member dues. Donations from sources like the city of Oakley and anonymous donors also go towards general building mainte-

Pacific Coast Water Rescue, a local team that provides Discovery Bay and the Delta with access to water safety teams, was awarded for its efforts at a July 13 ceremony. The organization was presented with the Hal Schell Award by Bay and Delta Yachtsman Magazine for its outstanding dedication and promotion towards the betterment of the Delta, according to a press release from the rescue organization. “This award is proudly accepted for our whole PCWR Captains on Call Team,” the organization wrote on social media. “It is an honor to serve our Boaters on the Bay and Delta!” PCWR was formed in 2012 in response to cuts made to other water rescue operations in the area, according to the press release. The organization’s more than 30 members are mostly off-duty police, firefighters and military personnel who have assisted in more than 150 rescues around the Delta since then.

N.Y. craps game starts July 29 at El Campanil Theatre Ghostlight Theatre Ensemble presents the musical comedy, “Guys and Dolls,” directed by Martie Muldoon, with the support of Assistant Director, Chuck Phalen. Frequently revived and a fan favorite across the country (and a popular request from Ghostlight patrons as well), this show celebrates the joy of local live theatre. New York City gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck. His girlfriend and nightclub performer Adelaide laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to Sky Masterson for the money, while Sky chases straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown. “Guys and Dolls” takes the audience from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up where they belong. Frank Loesser’s brassy, immortal score makes ‘Guys and Dolls’ a crowd pleaser, with popular songs, including Luck Be a Lady, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat, A Bushel and a Peck, Adelaide’s Lament, If I Were a Bell, I’ve Never Been in Love Before, and more. “With all that everyone has gone through in the last

State school meals program is for all students The Brentwood, Liberty, Byron, Oakley and Knightsen School Districts recently announced a policy for serving free meals for children under the USDA National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. The policy provides free meals (one breakfast and one lunch per school day) to all students during the 2022/2023 school year regardless of their household income. The school districts, however, must continue to collect free or reduced-price meal applications to ensure the sustainability of the state’s program. Each school and district have copies of the policy. Meal program applications will be sent to all students’ households accompanied by a letter informing students’ parents or guardians of the availability of free and reduced-price meals. To apply, complete one application for each child in your household and submit it to their respective school.
Households may submit an application at any time during the school year. Additional applications are available at school or district offices, or you may apply online. OBITUARY
Michael Sutton Wolfe August 20, 1940-July 10, 2022
Michael Sutton Wolfe, 81, was surrounded by his family as he passed away on the morning of July 10, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patti, and sister, Tina Seelye. And he is survived by his son, Stephen, his daughter, Michelle Edwards; his eight grandchildren; his brother, Larry; and two sisters, Susie Merrill and Robin Lyon. Michael was born on August 20, 1940, to William and Dorothy Wolfe in Napa, California. He grew up in Napa on a property known today as the “Wild
Wolfe Ranch” (4th Avenue). He graduated from Napa High School and shortly after enlisted in the Navy. He served on the USS Bon Homme Richard, an Essex-class aircraft carrier. After being honorably discharged, he attended the Napa Junior College, where he was elected class president, and he went on to graduate from Sacramento State with a business degree. He was active in the Native Sons of the Golden West and Toastmasters, and he played slow-pitch softball for many years. Michael was a right-of-way agent for Alameda County, California for 26 years. Speaking at conferences throughout the country, he was nationally known in his profession as an expert in negotiation, speaking skills, and persuasion. Michael’s love of nature took him often to Yosemite, where (with his son, Stephen) he backpacked to the farthest corners of the park, catching fish in every stream and facing off with bears at his campsites. He met the love of his life, Patricia Gowan, in 2003 with whom he had many adventures across the country until she died in 2017. His friends and family will greatly miss his storytelling, his love for life, and his old-style humor. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Michael’s name to the Wounded Warriors Project (https:// support.woundedwarriorproject.org/). A memorial service will be held on September 4 at 2 p.m. at Club Los Meganos, 1700 Trilogy Parkway, Brentwood, California.

Foulger’s second win of the season comes at Antioch Speedway main event Troy Foulger won the 20-lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the second win of the season for five-time champion Foulger aboard the entry owned by Bill Bowers. Buddy Kniss raced into the early lead ahead of Bobby Motts, Jr. and Aaron Crowell. An inside pass gained Crowell second place on lap 5 with Foulger following into third. They ran that way until a high pass in turn 2 on lap 13 put Foulger into second. Foulger went outside Kniss in turn 4 on lap 15 to take the lead. Foulger went on to victory from there, followed by Kniss, Crowell, point leader Nick DeCarlo and Kellen Chadwick Shannon Newton continued to close in on the Wingless Spec Sprint point lead by winning his fourth 20-lap Main Event. Braidon Moniz started up front and took the early lead ahead of MacKenzie Newton. An inside pass on the backstretch on lap 2 gained Rick Panfili second place before a yellow flag waved for Steve Maionchi in turn 1. Moniz continued to lead the restart as Shannon Newton moved into second place. MacKenzie Newton gained third on lap 7 as Panfil retired. A low move in turn 4 on lap 8 gained Shannon Newton the lead from Moniz. Newton would hold off the threats of Moniz the rest of the way for the win. Dylan Newberry made a turn 2 pass on lap 19 to take third place as MacKenzie Newton settled for fourth ahead of incoming points leader James East. Jacob Mallet Jr. won the 20-lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event –

Troy Foulger won the main event at the Antioch Speedway on July 23. his first win at Antioch this season as he continues to run third in the track standings. However, he continues to lead the IMCA State points race. After an early tangle eliminated Haley Gomez, Mallet took the early lead ahead of Nick Caughnan Jr. Fred Ryland moved into third place by the seventh lap. After a Nick Zapatero spin brought out a lap 13 yellow flag, Ryland trailed Mallet on the restart. Though Ryland closed the gap, Mallet went on to the victory. Kenny Shrader ended up third ahead of Tyler Rogers and Andrew Pearce.
Aiden Ponciano won his first Hobby Stock Main Event. The race was cut to 12 laps due to limited time. Ponciano took the early lead ahead of Mitchell Dana. Points leader Misty Welborn gained second on lap 5 as Dana headed to the infield. Following a yellow flag, Welborn took the lead, but she had spun in turn 4 for a lap 7 yellow flag. Ponciano led Grayson Baca on the restart. Baca made a turn 4 pass on lap 8 to take the lead, but a yellow flag waved for Taylor DeCarlo on lap 11. Ponciano led Kevin Brown and Jared Baugh on the restart, and a yellow flag was accompanied by
the checkered flag on lap 12. Jake Archibald and Lori Brown completed the Top 5. Tom Brown won the 15-lap Mini Stock Main Event. Brown led from the outset ahead of Don Abitz. However, Dana Gardner gained second on a lap 3 restart as Abitz spun. A lap-11 yellow flag saw John Roberts veer into the path of Abitz as they crashed in turn 3. Roberts had broken steering and retired at that point. Brown led the restart with Gardner in close pursuit. They finished that way, Ricky Mandonca in third ahead of Abitz and David Carson.
Liberty wins 7-on-7 football tournament Victory increases optimism for upcoming season by Juan Cebreiros Correspondent
The Liberty Lions football team recently won a 7-on-7 summer camp tournament in Lake Tahoe. These 7-on-7 competitions, unlike traditional 11-on-11 play, don’t have the five offensive linemen or four defensive linemen upfront. There is no rush on the quarterback. This allows for the defense to drop all their seven players into cov-
erage while also giving the quarterback his allotted pass time without having to worry about getting hit by a rushing defensive lineman. Most of the teams Liberty saw at the camp were from across California. One school even attended from Iowa. According to first-year head coach Mike Cable, the Lions struggled early on. But after an early loss in round-robin play, the team never looked back and didn’t lose another game for the rest of the tournament. Led by offensive standouts such as quarterback Nate Bell and wide receiver Ryan McKendry, the Lions team breezed
through to the championship, defeating Miramonte. Teammates stepped up when they needed to in helping the overall team succeed throughout the tournament, Cable said. Bell is labeled by his coach as a “very smart quarterback.” “His ability to read defenses and make plays on the fly made my job as a coach easier,” Cable said.
Cable said the experience will be a lift for his team going forward. “The tournament was a major confidence booster in the offense and me overall as a coach,” he said. The championship wasn’t the only bright light to come from the trip to Lake Tahoe as the team chemistry took a huge leap forward as the season quickly approaches, Cable said. He said the tournament also showcased his team’s quick adaptation to his new system. The team begins its season in late August. “You can really feel the team coming together as a family, guys pulling for each other no matter how big or small their role was on the team,” Cable said.

Wall of Heroes raises $68,000 for sick 4-year-old With the sound of sirens approaching their quiet neighborhood, Luca and family headed outside to see what was going on. To their surprise, a sea of blue – Brentwood police – and volunteers from the Wall of Heroes were fast approaching with huge support. Since the day that Cassie and David found out that their 4-year-old son Luca had leukemia, David’s coworkers have been right by their side. Officer Chris Bollinger contacted Wall of Heroes CEO Jessie LaChance-Mellan and asked for support. Wall of Heroes created a Fund the First fundraiser for the family. On July 19, Wall of Heroes and David’s police family delivered a check for $68,270. These donations came from friends, family and even local residents who have never met the family. “We are incredibly honored to present

Los Medanos College offers East County history classes Los Medanos College is offering several adult education classes in the coming months about the history of various parts of East Contra Costa County. The first one, about the Byron Hot Springs, is scheduled for Aug. 16. This class costs $19 and will be taught by Carol Jensen. Each class is at the Brentwood Center campus the third Tuesday of each month from 1-3 p.m., is held on person, and lasts two hours. The Byron Hot Springs is the “Carlsbad of the West,” and during the early 20th century the famous, the wealthy, and the curious enjoyed the resort. The
160-acre property is near the western edge of the San Joaquin River. Three hotels, all designed by the renowned San Francisco architect James Reid provide the backdrop for 19th-century taffeta skirts, Prohibition entertainments, “the Cure,” and WWII secret POW interrogations. The resort provided mineral water cures, private sanitarium medical treatments and recreation on one of the oldest golf courses in the West. Times changed as the U.S. Army leased the property for WWII use as “Camp Tracy.” In its day, the Byron Hot Springs rivaled the Hotel Del Monte and the Hotel Del Coronado in popularity.

GAMES & PUZZLES Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Notice is hereby given that the City Council of the City of Brentwood will, at 5:30 p.m. or as soon thereafter as the normal course of business permits on August 9, 2022, hold a PA-1 Specific Plan Workshop, and whereas the City Council of the City of Brentwood will subsequently hold a public hearing at 7:00 p.m. or as soon thereafter as the normal course of business permits on August 9, 2022, to consider the following application: An amendment to the Priority Area 1 Specific Plan, which governs approximately 431 acres roughly bounded by Lone Tree Way, Heidorn Ranch Road, Old Sand Creek Road, and Shady Willow Lane (the “Priority Area 1 Specific Plan” or “project”). As originally envisioned by the Priority Area 1 Specific Plan, the project will provide for residential, professional office, technology, medical, manufacturing and research and development uses in a mixed-use business park campus and adjoining neighborhoods. The City Council may consider the adoption of text and land use map amendments to the Priority Area 1 Specific Plan (SPA 22-001), to update development standards, land uses, infrastructure and public services, and circulation, as well as economic development and implementation; and the adoption of an ordinance to amend Brentwood Municipal Code Chapter 17.295 (PA-1 [Priority Area One] zone) and the zoning map of the City of Brentwood accordingly (RZ 22-001). Approval of the project will not result in the approval of any particular development proposal, but rather the underlying planning to facilitate later project review and approval. The project includes an Addendum to the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) prepared for the Priority Area 1 (PA-1) Specific Plan Project (State Clearinghouse No. 2018042064), which was certified by the City of Brentwood on November 13, 2018 (Certified EIR). In accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), this Addendum analyzes proposed modifications (the Modified Project) to the PA-1 Specific Plan Project approved in 2018, and demonstrates that all of the potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed modifications would be within the envelope of impacts already evaluated in the Certified EIR. On June 21, 2022, the Planning Commission held a public hearing as to the Addendum, SPA 22-001, and RZ 22-001, and adopted a resolution recommending that the City Council approve the project. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-19-874101-JB. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-280-2832, or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan. com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-19-874101JB to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real
estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary’s Agent, or the Beneficiary’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only. and 10 on-site physician assistants. Public comments following the presentation were positive, with all four speakers expressing support and excitement for the proposed orthopedic center and the job creation that would go with it. Just before voting, the council also collectively expressed their enthusiasm for the project, thanking city staff as well as Kronick and his staff. “You’re going to be a tremendous asset to our community,” Mayor Joel Bryant said. my office. The signatures on the papers are then examined by the County elections Department to verify that they are
from registered voters residing within the District the potential candidate is running in. Once it is confirmed that they have 20
valid signatures, they are then considered qualified candidates.” Oakley Deputy City Clerk Kim Snodgrass confirmed that the process was the same for potential candidates in Oakley. As of press time, the following residents have declared their intent to run: Brentwood Mark Duke - District 2 Brayden Haena - District 2 Sinziana Todor - District 2 Holley Bishop-Lopez - District 4 Anthony Oerlemans - District 4 Oakley Shannon Shaw - District 4 For additional information, visit the city’s website or call the city clerk. ed. If there is no local crisis center, or a counselor is unavailable, the caller will be connected with a national backup center. Live call services are available in English and Spanish, but Language Line Solutions also provide translation services in over 250 languages. Text and online chat services are available only in English. Suicide is the dominant topic among 988 callers and second-leading cause of death among young people, and, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, was the 10thleading cause of death in the nation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Every year in the U.S., more people die by suicide than in car accidents, and more suicide deaths occur than homicide and AIDS deaths combined. In 2020, nearly 46,000 people died by suicide. That’s an average of 1 death every 11 minutes, according to the CDC website. There have been 944 deaths by suicide in the Contra Costa County, according to the county health department,
with 103 of those in 2020. Groups that are at higher suicide risk, statistically, include veterans, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and tribal populations. Victims of past trauma are also at a higher risk of attempting suicide, according to the CDC. 988 Lifeline counselors are also trained in appropriate follow-up procedures. Numerous studies show that effective follow-up support results in 20% fewer suicides in individuals who have received inpatient services. Follow-up care can involve letters, phone calls, emails, or texts that are designed to check in with individuals who have recently experienced a suicide crisis to assess their well-being, check in regarding their safety plan and make adjustments as needed, and support them by providing and connecting to any needed resources or referrals. Follow-up is usually by telephone and typically occurs 1-3 days after the initial contact. Phone calls are brief, and while they can be tailored to the in-
dividual’s need, they are structured and focus on review of the safety plan and care coordination, according to the Lifeline website. Efficient follow-up also has the potential to reduce hospital readmissions and additional Emergency Department visits. “When I went back to work in the ER, the first suicide attempt [patient] I had was more than I was able to deal with in the moment,” Lopez recounted. “I had another nurse take the patient and I called a counselor from a [Lifeline] center. She got me refocused, and I went to my therapist the next day, and every day for the next week. They don’t just take that call, they also give you resources for any other moments that go beyond what you can take in.” The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is also always looking for new volunteers and paid employees. Training is provided. Apply by visiting https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/988/jobs. To comment, visit www.thepress.net
