County to close youth Ranch The Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Center in Byron, also called the Byron Ranch, will close over the next 90 days following a vote by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors.
By Chris Campos Staff Writer
MARTINEZ The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to close the Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Center in Byron over the next 90 days. Also known as the Byron Ranch, the facility at 4491 Bixler Road was opened in March 1960 as a treatment center for delinquent adolescents. The first unit of the 50-acre Ranch had a capacity of 21 wards. The newest dormitory was added in 1999 bringing the total capacity to 100 residents. Residents are limited to male youth who have been committed by the Juvenile Court; 12 are housed there now. Calls for its closure began years ago, riding a wave of reform efforts among juvenile justice activists as well as questions about the cost of upgrading and maintaining the deterioting facility. Also, county District Attorney Diana Becton has announced her intention to close the county’s 290-bed John A. OAKLEY The City Council on Tuesday, Oct. 25, approved the Golden Oaks Subdivision, which will allow eight single-family homes to be built on a 2-acre lot at 4960 Fuschia Way abutting the south end of the Police Department parking lot. The approval also clears the way for an extension of West Ruby Street to the intersection of Wildcat Way and Fuschia Way. The city staff report urging its approval reported, “One of the main attributes of the project is the connectivity it pro-

Council member George Fuller and others called for a detailed plan to slow down traffic, or a “calming” plan, which staff produced and amended to the plans. The subdivision was approved unanimously. In another major approval, the City Council voted 5-0 to award a $9.1 million contract to R&R Pacific Construction Inc. for the widening and improvement of the East Cypress Road corridor. The biggest impact on the juvenile justice system came with the 2020 passage of Senate Bill 823 that required the state’s youth prisons to shut down by June 30, 2023, and stopped allowing counties to send youth to the state Department of Juvenile Justice as of July 1, 2021. Veterans Day event benefits community Dinner, game night set for Nov.11 The fifth annual Veterans Day dinner and Game Night is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11 from 5-10:30 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Hall, at 500 Fairview Ave., in Brentwood. Money raised from the event, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council #7467, will benefit several charities, including Brentwood Veterans, Warm Coats, Food for Families, turkey dinners for Thanksgiving, St. Vincent De Paul, Gabriel Project, BirthRight, and various church ministries. Grand Knight Richard Alward said the group wants to make a $5,000 profit, “but it really depends on the number of players and guests that will attend,” he said via email. “We had over 100 attendees last year with about 8 tables of 8 set up for Texas Hold ‘em, 64 players in total. And that’s our goal for this year.” Alward said proceeds go to various charities. The Brentwood Veterans received a $500 check from the event last year. “Our Council and other councils in our area gather enough food and turkeys to feed 480 families,” he said via email. “Our contribution was $450 for which our Council #7467 received 60 boxes of

Lively celebration at Day of the Dead festival By Dane Dickerson Correspondent
Last week’s annual Dia de Los Muertos Festival in Brentwood attracted the most people since before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The event was organized by a committee of volunteers from all corners of East County’s Hispanic community and took place in the parking lot of Azucar Dulceria on Brentwood Boulevard. By assembling local vendors of Latin heritage with time-honored traditions, they created a commemoration of life and death. El Dia de Los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday in which people reunite spiritually with departed loved ones for a brief celebration of food, drink, dancing, and fanfare. This tradition goes back more than 3,000 years, with roots in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican rituals, Spanish culture, and European religion. It is typically celebrated around Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, a period in which it’s believed the gates of heaven are opened, allowing for this reunion, according to history.com. Ariel Olivera, the historian of Heritage High School’s Latinos Unidos, was recruited as a volunteer for the festival after her club advertised it on social media. Olivera explains the event’s cultural and spiritual significance. “It definitely means a lot to us, especially for those who have lost people,” she said. “A big thing for our club is we want to let our community know what this means to us, like teach them, you know. We take this day to represent the ones we’ve lost. To cherish them and tell their story. So, it’s not about them passing; we don’t think of their death as sad. We like to think of their lives and the way they lived it.” Several food trucks provided refreshments, and vendors sold various handmade and commercial goods, including traditional garments, hats, beads, and trinkets. AA Succulents, a popular plant business out of Knightsen, held a

Spectators gathered in droves at 4 p.m. as the scheduled parade commenced, kicked off by Catrinas holding banners of proud event sponsors. Vintage cars from Viejitos Car Club rolled through before the parade concluded with a traditional Aztec dance group performance. The Catrinas (people adorned in traditional dresses, hats, and skeleton face paint) competed in a beauty contest following the parade. The catrina is a cultural symbol often synonymous with Dia de Los Muertos. They were the obvious fan favorites, posing for pictures with attendees. participant, says the traditional ensemble is freeform and slightly different depending on the region from which it’s sourced. “It’s like a character that symbolizes the day of the dead, and that’s why we dress up,” Castro said. “And then there’s all of these different costumes that you can do, and they have the big hat and everything. It’s not based on religion or anything. It’s just more like a culture-based thing. You can just do anything with it; there’s no rules with it and how you should do it. It is a lot of work. I’m wearing something from Oaxaca, and this is something that they typically wear. This is actually made in Oaxaca and they brought it here.” While the festivities were upbeat, the mood amidst the alley of ofrendas (altars of offering to the dead) was serious and reverent. These altars were arranged with photos of deceased loved ones, humble offerings of food and drink, vibrant flowers, flags, skulls and figurines. Attendees in mourning came to reflect on their lives, shed a tear, or perhaps reminisce on a joyful memory. Copal incense from Mexico and sage from Native American tribes were continuously burned at these altars. The incense is burned to call back to ancestors, and is believed to protect and purify spaces. It produces a sweet, yet rich smell. Marivel Mendoza, an event organizer, was delighted at the event’s big turnout. She said the event wasn’t significant just for those who have passed away, but also for representing the Latin communities of East County that are alive and well. “East Contra Costa was predominantly agricultural land,” said Mendoza. “So there have been a lot of people who actually live in the neighborhood where we are, who were farm workers here. And so they’ve seen the progression of how much the city [Brentwood] has grown. But to see themselves represented and celebrated, I mean, there are no words right? It’s telling people they are seen, they are heard, and they are appreciated.” To view a video and a slideshow, visit www.thepress. net/multimedia

Becton named to state abortion rights task force Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton has been named to a statewide task force formed by California Attorney General Rob Bonta to protect and expand access to abortion and other reproductive healthcare. The California Reproductive Rights Task Force, led by the California Department of Justice, is made up of district attorneys, county counsel, and city attorneys from across the state. The task force members will work together using their legal expertise and law enforcement powers to ensure that every corner of California is safe for those seeking or providing reproductive care. “I am proud to bring together our partners on this task force from across the state for one common goal: to preserve and strengthen our reproductive freedoms,” said Bonta in a press release that recently announced the task force. “Abortion is safe and legal in California, and we will keep fighting and working together to preserve access.” Becton said in the press release that she is “honored to join Attorney General Rob Bonta in the fight to protect hardwon rights. The Reproductive Rights Task Force is a powerful legal partnership that will be a bulwark in protecting women from harassment, deception, out-of-state punishment, and discrimination when making individual reproductive choices.”
Others on the task force include Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, Oakland City Attorney Barbara J. Parker, Sacramento City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood, San Diego City Attorney Mara W. Elliott, said San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu and District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley and Santa Clara County Counsel James R. Williams. The task force members will use their enforcement powers to help with: • Prosecuting crimes of intimidation and harassment at abortion clinics. • Enforcing consumer protection laws against deceptive or unlawful conduct concerning reproductive healthcare. • Crafting state and local laws and policies to keep reproductive care providers and patients safe. • Protecting abortion-related healthcare information in California from being accessed by out-of-state agencies and persons to punish patients or providers. • Reviewing land-use issues to prevent discrimination against reproductive healthcare facilities. The task force will also meet and collaborate with state and federal agencies, local law enforcement, legislators, reproductive care providers, nonprofits, and academic centers.

Town hires assistant general manager By Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent
The Town of Discovery Bay Community Services District (CSD) hired former Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando as its new assistant general manager. Cantando served with the Antioch Police Department for 30 years before retiring in 2017. He then spent five years working in Bank of America’s corporate security division, which he left earlier this year. Now, he said he is ready to return to public service. “This is an exciting time,” Cantando said. “I was off for seven months, I
thought I might be ready to retire. And during that time, I was thinking I enjoyed the camaraderie of working in city government, and when I heard about this job, I thought it was perfect for me.” Cantando’s first day was Oct. 17, and he was hired with an annual salary of $131,885.98. He replaced interim assistant general manager Mike Davies, who will continue to work with the town as needed through next June, under a contract approved by the town board on Oct. 5. Discovery Bay General Manager Dina Breitstein said the district is excited to have Cantando on board.
“Allan brings to the district integrity and passion for public service that will serve our community well,” she said. “His vast leadership experience will benefit the district, its staff and the residents of Discovery Bay.” Cantando was one of six candidates interviewed during the hiring process, officials said. The town contracted with Bob Murray and Associates for $29,500 to vet applicants. Though Cantando was not initially contacted by them – he submitted an application after hearing of the open position – they did include him in

The Press announces candidate endorsements for Nov. 8 election The Press has hosted several candidate forums in Brentwood and Oakley ahead of the Nov. 8 election. After several candidate interviews and two public forums, we have arrived at our endorsements for the cities’ two city council races. In Brentwood, the District 2 candidates are Sinziana Todor, Brayden Haena, Mark Duke and protem Judge Patanisha Davis Pierson. Pierson’s legal background and government experience make her the
obvious choice for a seat on the council. For the District 4 seat, candidates include Holley Bishop-Lopez, Police Officer Tony Oerlemans and Jacob Singh. In our opinion, Oerlemans is the most capable candidate in this race. In the Oakley City Council races, the candidates for District 2 are Shelly Fitzgerald and Hugh Henderson. Henderson, a planning commissioner who also served as chief of the local fire district, is our choice in District 2. The
candidates in District 4 include Shannon Shaw, another current planning commissioner, and write-in candidate Adam Gerhart. We endorse Shaw for the City Council seat.

OBITUARIES Patrick Gray McHenry
March 4, 1938 – Oct. 13, 2022 “That time will never come again.” That statement is often expressed when a time in history or an icon has passed. That statement can be made of Patrick Gray McHenry, who passed away on Oct. 13, 2022 at the age of 84. President of his senior class, Pat graduated from Liberty High School in 1957. While serving as a medic in the California National Guard, he attended and graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. He returned home to work at the local funeral chapel, purchased the business within seven years and rebranded it the Brentwood Funeral Home. He married Donnalee Fisher, and together they raised a daughter, Erin. Vonnie Stornetta, McHenry’s sister, remembered him as a “wonderful, wonderful man…. He was a pillar of the community.” He joined the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce and the Brentwood Rotary and immediately became an active member. At the time of his passing, he was the longest-serving member of Brentwood Rotary. Pat always took an active role in Rotary and happily volunteered to serve. He served as secretary, president and chairperson for various events including Rotary Trade Club dinner. He always sold the most tickets to any event in which he took part and was selected Rotarian of the Year. Bob Taylor, former mayor of Brentwood, recalled McHenry as “a very charitable man. You wanted him by your side. He was a very righteous man.” Jim Wangeman, a fellow Rotarian who knew McHenry for 32 years, said “He was always available when you needed him. A true friend and a true gentleman.”
He became a member of East Contra Costa Historical Society in 1983, served on the board of directors and as president and chairperson for the annual barbecue for a number of years. He was generous with his time, and was instrumental in acquiring the Burlington Northern Caboose and the Byron Hot Springs omnibus. He assisted in the restoration of both and also helped to build Homer’s Shed, front porch and back patio of the Byer /Nail house and fencing around the rose garden. He was also generous with his money, and supported many other museum projects. He was awarded the Conference of California Society Preservation Award. Doreen Forlow, who worked with McHenry at the Society, called him an “invaluable resource and driving force” in the growth of the group. Another lifelong friend, Bruce Ghiselli, called McHenry “a true businessman who carried the best interest of Brentwood all his life…. He fostered the small-town environment that Brentwood is famous for.” In the early 1990s, he restored a rare 1949 Buick Woody Roadmaster Estate Wagon. He retired in 1995, and was able to do much of the restoration work himself. He was not afraid to drive it to classic car shows in which the Woody always won first place and many times Best of Show awards. He regularly attended several Concours shows a year and always showed the Woody in local shows. In 2008, he was invited to apply to the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The Woody was accepted and showed itself on the greens with the best cars in the world. Pat and the Buick drove themselves home with a proud thirdplace win. Services for Mr. McHenry will be held Thursday, Nov. 10, from noon-2:30 p.m. at the Brentwood Funeral Home, 839 1st St., in Brentwood.
John Fife Bushman
May 30, 1946 – Sept. 30, 2022 John Fife Bushman, 76, of Brentwood, California, died on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek after an 89 day battle in intensive care the result of complications from a fall. John was born on May 30, 1946, in Oroville, California, the second of the seven children of John V. and Gwendolyn Bushman of Gridley. John graduated from Gridley High School where he played the baritone horn in the band, worked in the local bakery and was infamous for doing wheel stands on his motorcycle in front of the school. He attended Yuba College, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he was selected for Submarine Service as a scuba diver and sonar operator. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to California earning a degree at California State University in Chico, California while working as a diesel and motorcycle mechanic. In 1969, while working as a motorcycle mechanic in Yuba City, he met his future wife, Kathy Strle, who worked in the parts department of the same shop. In June 1972, they married, living in Yuba City, Live Oak, Dublin, Antioch, and Oakley, ultimately retiring and moving to Chico after working 28 years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he has five U.S. patents from his mechanical wizardry. John and Kathy moved back to the Bay Area after 11 years in
Chico to be closer to family, settling in Brentwood where he volunteered with the East Contra Costa Historical Society, fixing and restoring old machinery. John enjoyed tinkering in his shop, always reinventing anything that broke because he could fix it better than new. He loved life and was a big tease with a huge heart. John is lovingly survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy; sons Brian (Marian) Bushman of Oakley, Tom (Jennifer) Bushman of Concord; six grandchildren – Shelbi, Melissa, Maria, Ava, Andrew, and Ashley – as well as his siblings Daphne Kessinger, Delcia Bosch, Rodney Bushman, Jeff Bushman, Connie Webb, and Suzette Meik. Funeral is planned for Nov. 10 at 12:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 400 Spruce St., Gridley, California. Burial immediately following at Gridley-Biggs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations be made in John’s name to East Contra Costa Historical Society, P.O. Box 202, Brentwood, CA 94513.

Liberty dominates Deer Valley, 72-0 By Juan Cebreiros Correspondent
Complete domination describes the Liberty Lions’ victory at home against their league rival, the Deer Valley Wolverines. From the opening kickoff , the Lions dictated in all three phases of the game for four quarters as they stomped the Wolverines 72-0 in the Lions’ den. The Wolverines’ offense showed little signs of life all game as they turned the ball over five times and never crossed the 50 yard line to get into Lions territory. With the game getting so out of hand so quickly, Deer Valley never had a chance to get settled into the game. Deer Valley switched between senior Ayanfe Adediran Jr. and junior Coby Fosselman at quarterback all game but neither could get the offense moving. The two combined to throw four interceptions with two of them returned for touchdowns by Liberty defenders Kyle Cook and Sean Cervantes. While the passing game was sputtering, the running game saw the same struggles as Deer Valley never rushed the ball for more than 10 yards at a time and added a fumble to the team’s combined five turnovers. While the Wolverines’ offense was unable to move at all, the Lions’ offense did the exact opposite as they were able to move down the field at will against the Deer Valley defense. Quarterback Nate Bell completed six passes the entire game for 114 yards and three touchdowns to receiver Ryder Steen. Steen led the team in receiving with teamhigh marks in receptions with four and yards with 80. Liberty’s three running backs all had great games as Jamar Searcy, Emilio Velez, and Giancarlo Olveda combined to rush for over 200 yards and three touchdowns.
The Liberty Lions overwhelmed their league rivals, the Deer Valley Wolverines, in a home game 72-0.
The Lions’ defense also got in on the scoring with three touchdowns, two coming from interceptions returned for touchdowns and a third coming on a scoop-and-score fumble recovery. The defense helped set the tone of the game early on the Wolverines’ first offensive possession. Searcy, a safety, intercepted a pass to open the floodgates. By the end of the first quarter, it was 28-0 and by halftime, it was 42-0. Midway through the third quarter, the Lions pulled a majority of their starters, and back-up quarterback Kasen Cameron entered the game. For the rest of the game, the Lions kept the ball on
the ground to keep the clock counting down. Liberty’s victory improves their overall record to 6-3 and jumps them up to second place in the Bay Valley Athletic League standings at 3-1. Next week. Liberty will play Heritage in the Brentwood Bowl at Heritage on Nov. 4 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. With this loss, Deer Valley drops to 0-9 on the season and 0-4 in league play. Next week, they welcome the Freedom Falcons at home also on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia/ slideshows
Los Positas College soccer boasts sibling rivalry Teams feature three Oakley family stars By Matt Schwab Correspondent
After competing at Heritage High, siblings Griffin and Tiana LeFleur have both moved on to play soccer for Las Positas College. Their older brother Grant played at Freedom High and also competes for Las Positas.
Las Positas College soccer is all in the family this season — the LaFleur family, that is. Brothers and Oakley residents Griffin and Grant LaFleur are sophomore starters on the Hawks men’s team, and their younger sister, Tiana, is a freshman starter on the women’s squad. Grant, the oldest of the three siblings, starred on powerful teams at Freedom High, and Tiana and Griffin shined at Heritage. Las Positas coach Andy Cumbo is thrilled with his LaFleur triple treat. “I’ve had siblings and I’ve had twins, but I’ve never had three (in the program at the same time). All three are doing well,” said Cumbo, who coaches the Las Positas College men’s and women’s teams. Soccer is in the LaFleur family DNA, it turns out.
The siblings’ dad, Gary LaFleur, coached the Heritage girls soccer team for about 15 years (he has 25 years of coaching experience overall), and is a coach/ technical director with Delta United Soccer Club. The three siblings are also Academy coaches for Delta and commute to school from their dad’s house. They’re basically joined at the soccer hip and are loving the connection. “Honestly, I think it’s a once-in-alifetime, like, crazy thing because we all weren’t able to be at the same high school together,” said Griffin, an all-conference defender at Las Positas in 2021 who was moved up to striker this season. All three siblings won Bay Valley Athletic League soccer titles at their high schools. Grant LaFleur, a center midfielder, competed against Griffin in high school, but the brothers are enjoying working together in college. The Hawks entered the week with 6-7-1 overall record, 1-5-0 in conference. As of Oct. 24, Griffin ranked No. 2 in team scoring with four goals and four assists for 12 points. Tiana scored in the Lady Hawks’ 3-0 win over host Foothill on Oct. 21, her fifth goal of the season, as the team improved to 8-4-2 overall
and 2-1-2 in conference. “I like how we’re competitive and we all have such heart, and we all want it as much as the person next to you,” Grant said of the team. Gary LaFleur is enjoying seeing all three of them compete when he gets a chance, especially Griffin and Grant, because as a girls team coach at Heritage, he didn’t get to see the boys play much. “I know their mom, Tanya, has been watching them play too (at Las Positas),” Gary said. “They’re far enough away so they can be independent and close enough so I can watch them play a game every now and then. … I think Cumbo likes having them up there.” Cumbo describes all three LaFleurs as “very good, very technical. They all three have a really high soccer IQ, so the similarities aren’t really like in looks or appearance. They might be, but it’s just the way in which they play. There’s some similarities there,” he says. The coach describes all three as “softspoken” off the field, but more vocal and intense on the field. Grant and Griffin have a take-no-prisoners intensity. see Soccer page 11A
SPORTS
Soccer from page 10A “Both of us are very competitive. We want to win,” Grant says. “We’re just gonna do whatever works to win, on the field with the whole team. Griffin’s just resilient in general, even in life. Any type of adversity that comes his way he just brushes it off his shoulder like nothing and keeps moving.” Speaking of their mindset, Griffin said, “Ever since we were kicking a ball in the middle of a hallway, knocking pictures off the wall, we’ve always been that way.” Grant played in a powerful Freedom program composed of a bunch of players from the same club team. The Falcons advanced to the CIF North Coast Section Division I playoffs semifinals twice. As high school rivals, Griffin and Grant battled on the field, but their family bond was apparent outside of competition. In a telling scene during Grant’s walk-out for his “Senior Game” at Freedom against Griffin and Heritage, a photo showed the brothers in different school jerseys along with their parents and Tiana. “It was pretty funny,” Grant recalled of the scene. Grant said he attended Freedom because his mom worked at Iron House Elementary School in Oakley at the time, so it was easier for her to take him there than to Heritage. Griffin later chose Heritage because many of his friends were there, and Tiana opted to go there too, Grant said.

Thank you, senior water polo players
An overachiever, Griffin says he prioritizes education at Las Positas, but would play soccer at the next level if the “stars align. … School’s very important to me. After I broke my leg and missed out on my senior year of high school, I reshuffled my priorities because you never know when an injury could come up, but if I’m blessed with an opportunity to do so, then I’ll take that opportunity,” Griffin said. Grant played a season at Cal State East Bay in 2017-18, but things didn’t go so well. His next two seasons were “messed up” by the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, he says, which caused a three-year gap in his playing career. The delay did create one fringe benefit – it allowed his younger sister time to graduate and join the two brothers at Las Positas in 2022. For her part, Tiana says she has a mixture of her brothers’ personalities in the sport. “Griffin on the field, he’s more like a leader and he’s strong-minded, but they both really are goal-oriented and always want to win and strive for that,” she says. “So, I would say I’m the same way.” She relishes being at the same college as Griffin and Grant, whom she looked up to throughout her childhood. Likewise, Griffin also holds Tiana in high regard. “I would say I look up to her,” Griffin said. “She inspires me in so many ways. We have a really cool relationship that I’m thankful for.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net

The Drama Factory puts Dracula in spotlight original adaptations of public domain material for their members. However, the authentic character of each story is preserved through rich storytelling, and this production is no different. Dracula is half romance and half horror story, following the plight of lawyer Jonathan Harker (played by Gabriel McKenzie) and his fiance, Mina Murray (played by Cordelia Stoddard) as they slowly unveil the darkness and mystery surrounding Count Dracula (played by Jason Wolcott). After the unfortunate and puzzling death of Mina’s friend, Lucy (played by Carla Nicolini), the pair of lovers are joined by Dr. Seward (played by Daniel Knight) and Professor VanHelsing (played by Vaitalis Taito) in their quest for answers, and revenge. “This adaptation of Dracula is an homage to the classic horror films of the 1930s,” stated Ballesteros in his director’s note. “By today’s standards they’re benign and stagey, but back then, they had the same effect on the audience that The Exorcist had on its release some 40 years later.”

Halloween night might be over, but an Antioch community theatre troupe is keeping the spirit alive with their upcoming production. The Drama Factory is to perform an original adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula Nov. 4-12 at the Nick Rodriguez Theatre in downtown Antioch. Dracula, a gothic novel published in 1897, brought vampire legends of its day into the spotlight and became the basis for an entire genre of literature and film, according to Brittanica.com. “It’s just a great story,” said John Ballesteros, director and co-author of the adaptation. “And you always want something to do around Halloween. Since trick or treating is only one night, we get to go a little bit beyond.” As a small community theatre company with a limited budget, Ballesteros said The Drama Factory relies on producing

Ballestros said the lack of gore is what sets his adaptation apart from other performances. “What I like about the old films from the ‘30s is they’re just really melodramatic,” said Ballestros. “The actors were either silent or staged, or both. It’s obsolete the way those people used to act, which is too bad, because it really translates well to the stage.” For Ballesteros, it’s a piece of nostalgia. For the cast, which ranges in age from 9 years old to in their 40s, it’s an opportunity to put their own spin on a classic tale. Overall, Ballesteros said the production sets its sights on being a treat for an audience of all ages. Performances are on Nov. 4, 5, 11, and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 5, 6, and 12 at 1 p.m. The Nick Rodriguez Community Theatre is at 213 F St. in Antioch. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors. ering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING. COM, using the file number assigned to this case 101775-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 101775-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. enuine, Humble, Dedicated, Compassionate, Inspirational. These are just
a few words by many to describe Ed McClelland, who through his nonprofit organization Operation Creekside, received the Jefferson Award, a public service award given to individuals at both a local and national basis. The Jefferson Award highlights unsung heroes while inspiring those to become involved in community and public service, according to YoursHumanly.org. “Every week, we honor a quiet hero who is doing extraordinary things for our community,” said KPIX-TV Jefferson Awards reporter Sharon Chin. “We recognize his dedication and commitment to active military veterans ON THE COVER: Army Lt. Col. Curtis L. Yankie, commander, 834th Transportation Battalion of Military Ocean Terminal Concord, speaks at the 75th anniversary of the Port Chicago disaster in July 2019.

Operation Creekside has teamed up with 22TooMany to create custom memorial benches for family members of veterans who have died by suicide. through his volunteer-based distribution of care packages, overseas, and at home. We also honor his (McClelland’s) compassion for veterans and the families who have lost veterans through suicide. He has brought much comfort to them through the memorial benches he custom orders and delivers thousands of miles across the country for free. Ed is an example that one person really can make a
difference. What an inspiration he is to us all!” McClelland, formerly of Discovery Bay, says he is not big on individual recognition and doesn’t want it to be all about him, but was humbled and taken aback by the honor. “The Jefferson Award was a surprise to me,” he said. “One of our supporters nominated me, and I am very humbled. I had seven uncles that served this country, and I thought
of how our veterans have kept us safe 24/7 just like the troops serving today. What a fine group I chose to serve!” Kurt Buyer, a friend and supporter of McClelland, nominated him for the award, crediting him for turning his life around after experiencing personal struggles and emphasizing his propensity for dedicating himself to helping others, in particular among veterans. “He overcame a lot of obstacles in his personal life and dedicated himself to the mission of serving the veterans and the active people in Afghanistan and some of the other places overseas we used to send care packages,” said Buyer. “Just the way he goes about it on a shoestring and using a lot of his own money. I just really admire and respect him as a person. We need more people like Ed in the world today, who put other people first, especially the veterans and what they have done for our country.” McClelland, 62, spoke about his reasons for wanting to start Operation Creekside, detailing his battle with alcoholism and wanting to do something positive in his life after becoming sober in 2006. While he started Operation Creekside in 2009, McClelland said his support for the veterans in the form of sending care packs to the troops goes back further. see Honor page 3B

Operation Creekside Troop Pack at veterans hall
“In 2010 with the help of Creekside Church members in Brentwood, we quickly started shipping 50 to 100 care packs to U.S. troops deployed every month, with much more being shipped in November and December,” said McClelland, who is the chaplain for Operation Creekside. “I am not in this non-profit ‘business’ for awards or any attention for me. We are trying to fill tremendous needs in the veteran community which includes loving ‘The Families of the 22.” The ‘Families of the 22’ references the loss of 22 veterans daily by suicide. According to 22toomany.com, the reasons vary from post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, and the challenges of readjusting from military to civilian life. Operation Creekside has formed a partnership with 22TooMany, a group of runners nationwide who run races with photos of veterans lost to suicide and send medals to the families. In addition, Operation Creekside has teamed up with 22TooMany to create custom memorial benches for family members of veterans who have died by suicide. “As a civilian who spends a lot of time with veterans, I’ve learned what an honorable group they are and serving them and the families of the 22 is an amazing mission,” said McClelland. Linda Wilson has worked with McClelland for many years. “He does an amazing job,” she said. “They are beautiful benches. The joy that they bring to those is
T
his year’s Operation
McCLELLAND amazing. Each one has these troops’ names, their birthdays, and whatever is significant to them. If they had a favorite saying or biblical verse, they are engraved into them.” McClelland said that the feeling of delivering a bench to a troop’s family is difficult to explain. “Over the last five years or so, I have been meeting some of these families across the country, and we have built and delivered about 16 benches now,” said McClelland. “It can be very solemn, but it is extremely important to recognize these families and show them that we care for their loss. The families never want their loved ones forgotten. We become family with them.” McClelland, who now resides in Tuolumne, says he wishes to keep doing this mission for as long as he can. “I am hoping for eight to 10 years more, or basically as long as I can serve efficiently,” said McClelland. “As a believer who believes that God rescued me from alcoholism, my strength to serve comes from Him. In fact, my favorite prayer is, ‘Lord give me the ability to do more than I am capable of.’”

Creekside Troop Pack is scheduled for 6pm on Dec. 13
at the Brentwood Veterans Memorial Building, 757 First St. Co-sponsor is Brentwood NAPA Auto Parts. Volunteers will fill care packages with necessities that will be sent to U.S. service members stationed overseas in time for the holidays. Here is a list of needed items, according to the Operation Creekside website: ♦ Small individual packs of all kinds of nuts ♦ Granola bars and energy bars ♦ Powdered drink mixes ♦ Pop-Tarts ♦ Fruit snacks, sunflower seeds ♦ Beef jerky ♦ Gum ♦ Socks, T-shirts, gloves Monetary donations also are needed to mail the packages overseas. To donate money, send it to: Operation Creekside, Box 1758, Discovery Bay, CA 94505. Operation Creekside relies on the taxdeductible donations and support from local businesses, said Ed McClelland, a chaplain in Brentwood. And it’s not just about paying for
what goes inside the packages. Each box also costs about $23.50 in postage to send, he said. Operation Creekside will ship a care package to anyone service member or veteran who needs one, McClelland says, adding that he always keeps a few with him just in case. ”I’ve probably mailed care packs from more post offices than anybody in the country,” he said last year. “I’ve mailed them across the nation. And it’s fun. Sometimes, it’s boring. Other times, I’ve had the clerks cry.” About 15,000 boxes are sent across the U.S. and to those deployed in countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, Kuwait and South Korea. The packs contain dry, packaged food and treats that won’t spoil and can survive the shipping process, such as granola bars, nuts and beef jerky. Sometimes the packages contain special gifts, such as letters and homemade pillow cases. McClelland founded Operation Creekside in 2009, and is the nonprofit’s director and outreach liaison. The organization also has a small board of directors and 12 people who regularly help assemble care packages throughout the year for service members and veterans. For any assistance with donations or if you have any questions, call Brentwood Auto Parts at 925-634-3952 and ask for Linda or Beth, or email at naparick@sbcglobal.net. “Sometimes, explosions were so intense, only pieces of a person remained,” said Bostick, 44, of Pittsburg. “In the Army, we never leave a soldier behind. I am proud that any time a fellow soldier met his end next to me, I carried what was left of him off the battlefield with me. War brings out opportunities to see the depth of who you are as a person.” Bostick said he has seen and experienced things firsthand many would consider inconceivable. MILITARY/VETERAN
The City of Brentwood Military/Veteran Banner Program has been established to honor and recognize active duty military personnel or military veterans that reside in, or have immediate family living in the City of Brentwood. Military/Veteran Banners will display the official military photo of the service member or veteran, as well as their name, rank, and branch of the United States Armed Forces. Honor those who served in the U.S. Armed Services and recognize their bravery, commitment, and sacrifices to protect the values and freedoms of Americans.
Freedom, and Operation New Dawn primarily consisted of dismounted fighting with small arms, rocket-propelled grenades, and improvised explosive devices, serving in the 14th Psychological Operations Battalion (POB), 301st Psychological Operations Company (POC), and 870th Military Police (MP) Company, leaving in 2017 as a first lieutenant. Yet, he recounts his reasons for wanting to serve in the first place. “I longed for a sense of brotherhood and camaraderie that I knew could only be forged on the battlefield amongst soldiers willing to sacrifice everything for their country, unit, and fellow soldier,” said Bostick. “Both of my grandfathers served. One served in World War II. One served in the Korean War. I saw it as a young child as I watched my grandfathers and their friends and saw the bond that they shared. There was a brotherhood and camaraderie.” According to Bostick, war revealed that the most precious thing any person may have is time, because once spent, it is never regained. And no matter how much time people are given, it is never enough. Bostick says that this lesson changed his personal value system from one focused on materialism and status, to one that values personal relationships and the time spent with friends and loved ones. “I find that many people who have never served take much for granted and seem to have no value system that guides their actions,” said Bostick. “The Army values are leadership, duty, responsibility, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. Violation of an Army value is grounds for court martial. At my unit, I was surrounded by women and men of convictions rooted in the Army values. I miss that in civilian life.” Adjusting to civilian life for Bostick has been difficult in more ways than one since leaving the service five years ago. He said he struggles, along with other combat veterans today, and how these experiences will impact him and his fellow veterans for the rest of his life. Today, Bostick is the owner and operations director of Junked: Powered by Veterans, a fullservice junk removal and hauling service, whose mission is to provide eco-friendly junk removal while hiring and supporting veterans. “I have some physical and mental injuries that will be with me the rest of my life, which has impacted my quality of life,” Bostick said. “It has taken the unyielding support of my wife and battle buddies. Often, I feel like there is no place for me here at home, but organizations like Delta Veterans Group created a community for veterans like me where I can feel a sense of belonging and purpose.” The Delta Veterans Group is a group composed of veteran and civilian volunteers who wish to serve local veterans. “Movies are sensationalized,” said Bostick. “When you read an account, one can get the mental and emotional impact of the events and can get inside the head and hearts of people more so than a movie. It gives you a better understanding.” Bostick said emphatically that he absolutely would serve all over again “without question”, while also offering some advice for young people interested in serving, in the meantime putting a great emphasis on the friendships, the clear value system, and codes of conduct from serving. “I would advocate joining,” said Bostick. “The friendships you make in the military are unparalleled to those made in any other aspect of life. So in addition to the skills you gain, you gain an extended family that will see you through your most trying times. Friends end up being more like family when it is all said and done. It was proud for me to show up for me, for my fellow soldiers, and for my country.”

in Antioch, their goal is to bring veterans the four pillars of success: housing, employment, health and education. “Our goal is simple; to bring together all of the Veteran Service Organizations in our communities and champion support for our nation’s finest men and women Veterans,” said J.R. Wilson, founder and president of the Delta Veterans Group. “Through the four pillars of success as a veteran myself, I was able to find peace and balance in my life, and a chance to bring about positive changes for veterans in our community.” While many veterans endure the physical and mental injuries that leave debilitating scars and lasting effects, Bostick said veterans aren’t treated with enough respect, exemplifying the United States Congress’ use of the PACT Act, which provides expanded health benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, herbicides, and other airborne toxins, as a political tool. “Veterans and their supporters had to protest and obtain vast media coverage to get a bill to pass that should have passed without incident,” said Bostick. “It is sad when the leaders of this country treat its veterans with such disregard.” Bostick said he feels however, that there are ways the public can be more supportive and respectful of veterans, like getting to know veterans by volunteering with organizations that support veterans, or reading a historically accurate account of war, such as books as opposed to what may be depicted in a movie.

Brentwood’s Sons of the American Legion revived DANE DICKERSON
A
Some members of the Sons of the American Legion gather at the Brentwood Veterans Memorial Hall to practice their 21-gun salute for Veterans Day.
Sons of the American Legion chapter existed in Brentwood some 50
years ago, but a dedicated group of longtime residents is reviving its legacy to serve its community.
Brentwood’s Sons of the American Legion Squadron 202 was established at the brink of the COVID-19 pandemic but managed to thrive in community involvement despite restrictions. They are fully operational as the pandemic winds down, and are involved in a little bit of everything. Nationally, Sons of the American Legionwas founded in 1932 and exists to “honor the service and sacrifice of Legionnaires.” It is a national non-profit organization composed of males of any age whose parents or grandparents are U.S. military veterans. It is a brother organization of the American Legion, a U.S. veterans association, created to allow families of veterans to serve the local community and perpetuate American values. The local Legion consists of about 30 active members, headed by their newly appointed Commander, Britt Parks. They meet the last Tuesday of each month at Bentwood’s Veterans Memorial Building, the

interior of which was renovated by Legion members within their first year of operation. The son of a Vietnam veteran and longtime Brentwood resident, Parks explains that Sons of the American Legion is about honoring those who have served and improving the community that raised him. “I joined right after my father passed away,” said Parks. “I’ve lived in Brentwood for 54 years, and I wanted to give something back to the town, you know, I think the group is great. We’re all together because we all grew up in this town. It’s about respect for what they [veterans] did. They went and served our country, and some of them have seen some
things you don’t want to see.” Squadron 202 partners with other local nonprofits to provide aid wherever needed. Members volunteer at the food bank, have helped with the Brentwood Strong food drive, they provide set-up of events like Brentwood Oktoberfest, they have worked security for the Dia De Los Muertos festivals in the past, and they partner with One Day at a Time to hand out food to the needy. They also distribute turkeys and other Thanksgiving essentials to veterans around the holidays. Soon they will prepare Veterans Park for Veterans Day festivities on Nov. 11 and perform a ceremony complete with a
21-gun salute. In addition to service hours, Sons of the American Legion raises funds for the community. They run an Adopt-A-Senior program, where they donate college school supplies and gifts to select graduating students at Heritage High. They host an annual crab feed fundraiser and have gifted past proceeds to Legion members with sudden health expenses, including cancer and stroke. The Chris Berumen Memorial scholarship is also supported with fundraising by members of Sons of the American Legion annually and is named after one of their founding members. Parks regards excellent community support as a key reason so many people spend their whole lives here. “My friend Rod had a stroke. In a big town, you have no help. In this little town, we got 500 people to show up and give money for him. That’s why you stay in a little town, right? There’s community; sometimes we don’t agree, but we’re all friends and stay as a team. It’s pretty cool to be a part of. In a bigger city, you don’t know your neighbors; you don’t know the people that live down the street. But here, I go anywhere and know people,” Parks said. rentwood’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10789 is set to distribute its traditional
“Buddy” poppies to raise funds and awareness for needy and veterans with disabilities, and the surviving family members of deceased veterans. Post members will be at four locations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5, to hand out the poppies and collect donations: ♦ Ace Hardware, 8900 Brentwood Blvd., Suite J, in Brentwood; ♦ both Brentwood Safeway locations at 1152 Second St., Brentwood and 3110 Balfour Road, Brentwood; ♦ Discovery Bay’s Safeway, 14840 Highway 4, Discovery Bay. “We pass out the poppies, the red flowers with the white tags on them, and we ask for donations that go directly into our VFW relief fund,” said VFW member and Air Force veteran Mike Meyokovich.
“Those monies are used to help veterans in need if they are having a hard time paying their rent or utility bills, something really needs fixing on their home, if they need some type of wheelchair ramp or something like that installed … and everything we collect in our VFW post stays in our local area.” The VFW ensures that 100% of the donations go to veterans and their surviving family members, he said. Red poppies are recognized as memorial flowers in the United States and around the world. The small paper and wire “Buddy” poppies have been handed out by the VFW since 1922 and are assembled by veterans with disabilities and serve as a reminder of those who have served, fought and died in service to their country, VFW officials say. The origins of the tradition can be traced to Col. John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields,” meant to honor the men and women who died in France in World War I. For more information on VFW Post 10789, or to donate, visit www.vfw10789. org, or attend their regular meeting the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Brentwood Veterans Memorial Building, 757 First St., Brentwood.

It is my privilege to serve as a Veterans Volunteer with Hospice East Bay. I am a Vietnam Era veteran and served a six-year enlistment in the U.S. Air Force. I have also served as a Hospice East Bay Veteran Volunteer for the past three years. For our Veteran patients (and their families), as the end of life approaches, military service for our country is one of their lives’ most memorable periods. The families of our Veteran patients are genuinely moved by the tributes paid to their service by Hospice East Bay. ~Don C.

Andrew Becker called the park “a phenomenal project.” Martin Wesley, identifying himself as a co-founder of the CoCo Farms cannabis dispensary, said “We pledge our total support to the project … It will beautify downtown.” The three presenters emphasized the importance of community support and financial donations. The council voted unanimously to request a city staff report for details on the next steps to bring the park to fruition. They also requested a draft of an agreement with the park veterans group.

Sponsored by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6435, the proposed Veterans Memorial Park was presented to the City Council on Oct. 11 by Gerald “JR” Wilson, local VFW commander, Don Freitas, former mayor, and Pat Jeremy, vice president of VFW 6435. Wilson called the project, “a community project that is educational, equitable and inclusive.” The three lots, now city surplus properties, would entail a parking lot at the southern end and two other lots linked by a “Path of Heroes” honoring veterans who served from World War I throughWorld War II, the Vietnam War, Iraq and Afghanistan. The park design features obelisks with information covering various conflicts and local veterans’ experiences. Jeremy told the council that the group “wants to be able to tell the real story” of the sacrifices that veterans endured over the decades. Freitas noted that the park would “offer a recreational opportunity, as well as eliminate a blighted location at the entrance of the city.” During public comments at the meeting,
