A region rich in history
More than 1,000 years ago, Native Americans called the East County area home. The Bay Miwok and Yokut Indians preceded Spanish explorer Pedro Fages, who in 1772, led the first European parties through the area. More than a century passed before European settlers arrived to put down roots.
ANTIOCH
On Sept. 16, 1850, the first settlers arrived at the foot of what is now F Street in Antioch. The town was named after the ancient, biblical city in Syria. The town incorporated in February 1872, with a population of only 600. The year 1876 saw the introduction of a narrow-gauge railway between Antioch and the mining town of Stewartsville 6 miles to the south, at the site of today’s Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve.
In 1851, Antioch got its first school, provided by a ship owner who donated the galley of his beached vessel to serve as the building. Some of Antioch’s early businesses included brick kilns, coal mining, a copper smelter, several potteries and a distillery.
By the early 1900s, Antioch had only about 700 residents, but the population began to skyrocket in the 1920s with the construction of the Antioch Bridge and Fulton Shipyards. During World War
II, 27 vessels were built in Antioch for the U.S. Navy.
By 1970, Antioch had grown to 28,500 residents. Built on inexpensive land, residential development further increased the citizenry to an estimated 47,000 by the mid-1980s. Today, the population tops 115,200.
BRENTWOOD
One of the first pioneers to settle in the Brentwood area was a doctor named John Marsh. He built a stately mansion out of stone, which still stands today on Marsh Creek Road. Marsh was murdered in 1856 before he ever moved into the house. The name Brentwood is believed to have come from the Marsh family’s hometown of Brentwood, England.
City development was hastened by the discovery of coal in the Mount Diablo foothills. By 1874, the first structures were popping up on Oak Street.
Fertile soils and the coming of the railroad in 1890 helped make the area the largest shipping point for grain between New Orleans and San Francisco. The English land speculation company Balfour Guthrie installed a vast irrigation system that improved land values, allowing farmers to grow row crops and fruit trees and firmly establish the town’s agricultural core.
Brentwood incorporated as a city in 1948. It remained a small agricultural
community until the last decade of the century, when its proximity to the financial centers of the Bay Area and its relatively affordable housing triggered rapid growth. The population grew nearly five times from 1990 to today’s more than 66,000, bringing a suburban lifestyle and the related influx of goods and services to the formerly rural area. Efforts to preserve its agricultural heritage continue today.
OAKLEY
The discovery of Native American artifacts in Big Break clearly establishes Oakley as a site of that earlier culture. The first evidence of European settlers in the city can be traced to Randolph C. Marsh, one of its first landowners (no relation to pioneer Dr. John Marsh).
In 1897, Marsh arrived and foresaw that the area could produce successful crops. He purchased 12 acres of land, plotted the town and named the first five streets Main, Acme, Ruby, Star and Home, spelling MARSH with the initials of each street name. Nicknamed “sandlappers” by critics who said crops would never grow in the sandy soil, the early settlers proved otherwise, turning Oakley into a bountiful source of fresh fruits and vegetables.
In the 1930s, Oakley’s Main Street was dotted with packing sheds, and agriculture was shipped via the railroad throughout the nation. Oakley became a city in 1999.
DISCOVERY BAY
Discovery Bay is a unique community in Contra Costa County. The idea was born in 1970, when the Veronica Development Company envisioned a water-oriented community where you could “live where you play,” which became the town’s motto.
Those who put their faith in the project haven’t been sorry. Lots they purchased for $15,000 have sold in recent years for 30 to 45 times that amount. Developer Ken Hofmann opened sales in 1978, and buyers slept in the streets to get the lot of their choice.
In 1984, Discovery Bay unveiled its crown jewel: an 18-hole championship golf course. The final bays of the original Discovery Bay development opened in 1988.
In 1997, Discovery Bay became a community services district, assuming oversight of most of its own activities beyond land-use decisions and emergency services. Land-use regulations and police services are overseen by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, while fire service is provided by the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
The expansion of the community, Discovery Bay West, began in 2000 when the official name of the community became The Town of Discovery Bay.
In 2007, Discovery Bay was granted its own ZIP code, 94505, as its population grew past 14,000.
BETHEL ISLAND
In 1860, a Mr. Stone reclaimed the land known as Bethel Island under the Swamp and Over Flowed Act of 1855. It was named Stone Tract. Ten years later, he sold the land to Maj. William K. Bethel, who used it to grow feed for the dairy herd on the island.
Though it was officially named in 1898, Bethel Island actually became an island in the 1890s when surrounding sloughs were dredged.
The Bethel Island Bridge, a one-lane wooden plank structure, was built in 1918. During this same time, the island was farmed by William J. Hotchkiss whzo purchased 1,317 acres to grow potatoes, beans and sugar beets.
During the 1920s and ’30s, Bethel Island became known as a fishing paradise and a haven for hunters. Harbors were built
along the island’s waterfront, and recreation flourished. Electricity was first brought to the island in 1946.
In 2010, a new Bethel Island bridge replaced the aging wooden structure that provided the only access to the island.
BYRON
The town of Byron was founded in 1878, when the San Pablo and Tulare Railroad Company built a track connecting Contra Costa and San Joaquin counties, though settlers already had been in the area for many years.
After finding no luck in the Sierra Nevada gold mines, German immigrant Henry Wilkening built a house on land he purchased near a planned railroad station. He became Byron’s first postmaster and built the town’s first hotel, saloon and livery stable.
In the 1860s, R.O. Risdon discovered the Byron Hot Springs. His nephew, Lewis Risdon Mead, discovered more than 50 springs, ranging in temperature from 52 to 140 degrees.
Mead developed the now-idle Byron Hot Springs, popular with the rich and famous in
the 1920s and ’30s. In 1938, the resort was closed and sold to the government, which used it as a prisoner of war interrogation center during World War II. The property remains unoccupied.
KNIGHTSEN
Knightsen was founded in 1898, when the Sante Fe Railroad made its preliminary survey through the area.
George W. Knight, a native of Maine, purchased 110 acres of land from Lazarus Barkley, acreage that eventually became the town of Knightsen. The name Knightsen was derived from Knight’s last name and the last three letters of his wife’s maiden name, Christensen.
Dairies were established in the early 1900s. In the 1920s, the Knightsen Irrigation District brought water to the fields, allowing farmers to plant a wide variety of crops. The Knightsen Farm Bureau was established in 1918, and the Farm Bureau Center is still a community gathering place.
Recently, Knightsen received official historical designation for several of its downtown buildings.
Historical information was compiled from “Footprints in the Sand,” by Kathy Leighton, the East Contra Costa Historical Society, the Antioch Chamber of Commerce and the Antioch Historical Society.
New Amtrak station coming to Oakley in 2025
By Sean TongsonEast Contra Costa County will welcome a new addition, the Oakley Amtrack Station, a key to future community development, while providing another transit option for local commuters starting in 2025.
The new Amtrak station will be located in downtown Oakley. Currently in the design phase, the new train platform in Oakley is expected to serve about 52,300 passengers annually, representing riders using the service for the first time and existing passengers diverted from the current nearest station in Antioch–Pittsburg. According to Oakley Assistant City Manager Danielle Navarro, the project has been in the works for the past 10 years.
“The train platform is critical to the continued development of the Oakley downtown,” Navarro said. “The addition of another mode of transportation, coupled with connectivity with the existing Tri-Delta Transit bus network will serve not just Oakley, but the surrounding far East County region.”
The 700-foot-long train station platform will be located north of Main Street
between Norcross Lane and 2nd Street. To accommodate the project, Oakley has made various improvements totaling $5,431,600, which include new roadways with curb, gutter and sidewalks, a new storm drain, lighting and landscaping, along with about 300 new parking spaces to support the train platform and downtown merchants.
Overall, officials said the new train platform is projected to improve transportation coverage in East County, while helping to recruit passengers in
shorter-distance markets to and from the Bay Area along with northern San Joaquin Valley.
“BNSF will be constructing the train platform, and they are currently still in the design phase with construction expected to start later this year,” Navarro said in March.
According to Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway, (BNSF), the projected completion of the new train station is summer or fall of 2025.
“East County is the fastest-growing part of Contra Costa, and the Oakley station is another big step to improve our infrastructure to meet demand,” said county Supervisor Diane Burgis. “Having Amtrak service to downtown Oakley will make it easier for East County residents to commute without adding their cars to Highway 4 traffic, and it will attract new residents and businesses who prioritize being near transit. East County offers visitors so much, whether it’s our U-Pick farms, the Delta or our smalltown feel, and the new station will make it easier for visitors to experience what makes our region great.”

One of the area’s first cities is now one of its largest
Antioch, the ancient translation meaning “First City of the East,” is also one of the state’s oldest cities with origins dating to 1850.
The once-small town’s population has shot up from 5,000 in 1940 to 115,000 today, becoming the secondlargest city in Contra Costa County, offering an array of attractive affordable homes and business opportunities.
What started as a quaint locale is now a cityscape, with nearly 3,000 thriving businesses. The city offers all the amenities of modern life accompanied by nature’s pristine graces.
Nestled amid housing developments, shopping centers and office parks, untouched nature emerges at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, Contra Loma Regional Park and along the vast
banks of the San Joaquin River as it spills into the Delta.
Not far in every direction, activity springs to life in a variety of sports and leisure activities within the city’s more than 30 parks.
Other popular visitor attractions include the Dow Wetlands Preserve, the Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge, the Lone Tree Golf Course, Lynn House Art Gallery and the Antioch Historical Society Museum.
As summer temperatures climb, the annual Contra Costa County Fair pitches its tents at the Contra Costa Event Park, and the city’s water park splashes to life just steps from the 35,000-square-foot community center.
Visitors and residents looking to turn back the clock can stroll through
the historic Rivertown District, featuring quaint shops cuddled up to the San Joaquin River.
The area is also home to the longstanding entertainment destination, El Campanil Theatre, which turned 95 in 2023 and earned The Art Deco Society of California’s 2018 Eclectic Architecture award.
Antioch itself celebrated 150 years of cityhood in 2022 with a series of events for residents. Despite its age, the city is far from stuck in the past. Antioch embarked on a rebranding effort in 2018, and ushered in the long-awaited eBARTto-Antioch extension that carried a least a million riders between the new Antioch facility on Slatten Ranch Road and the existing Pittsburg/Bay Point eBART Station in the first five months of its operation.
Hernandez-Thorpe, Antioch fight climate change
Mayor signs pledge to reject new fossil fuel infrastructure
By Jeff WeisingerAntioch Mayor Lamar HernandezThorpe was waiting for someone else to pull the trigger first against new fossil fuel infrastructure. But after waiting long enough, he decided that he and the city of Antioch will be the ones to step up instead.
In February of this year, the mayor signed a pledge and mayoral proclamation for the city to reject any new fossil fuel infrastructure in an effort to steer the city toward zero-emission vehicles.
“We’ve just got to deal with this in a real way,” Hernandez-Thorpe said. “We want to make sure that people have an environment that’s clean and an environment that their children and grandchildren can look forward to.”
The pledge and proclamation rejects investments of public money in new, renewed, or expanded fossil fuel infrastructure in Antioch to mark the city’s transition to zero emissions in an effort to combat the damage from climate change. The signing comes just two years after the city banned oil and gas drilling, and comes off of a year when California continues to see rising temperatures since the 1970s, according to a news release.
Fern Uennatornwaranggoon, the climate campaign director for ports at the Pacific Environment, a California-based local to global non-governmental organization that focuses on advancing systemic environmental reform through grassroots movement building and international diplomacy across the Pacific Rim, explained that fossil fuels are causing the average temperature of the planet to continue to rise.
“As you know, climate change is already hitting us here in California due to human caused greenhouse gas emissions,” she explained. “This is leading to increasingly frequent and more severe incidences of storms and flooding, heat waves, wildfires, drought and power outages."
“Antioch too is seeing local impacts of this climate change. While, historically,
Antioch experiences 30 days per year of temperatures over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, by mid-century the city could experience up to 70 days per year of 90 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures, and by late century more than 100 days unless we take bold action.
Part of the plan by Hernandez-Thorpe is for the city to invest in more charging stations and to, eventually, phase out any gas-powered vehicles – police cars and public works trucks, to name a few.
“We need to see charging stations as quickly as we can to encourage people into more investment in that area,” HernandezThorpe said.
Local groups dedicated to climate action have voiced their support.
“It took both immense courage to stand up to the industry and also very principled listening to the people, to local residents who called attention to the presence of oil and gas drilling,” Shoshana Wechsler, a founding member of the Sunflower Alliance advocacy group said. “We are shutting the door to any further fossil fuel extraction in a country that has been a hub of fossil fuel activity.”

A city preparing for the future while honoring its past
Brentwood, with its deep agricultural roots, has blossomed into a growing community.
The city’s population, which hovered around 23,000 in 2000, has grown to over 66,000.
Even in its growth, many longtime residents say Brentwood hasn’t lost its small-town charm. Efforts to preserve the legacy of agriculture continue. The area boasts more than 40 local growers of farm-fresh produce sold directly to
consumers.
Brentwood was incorporated in 1948.
While the future is unfolding, the city already has a lot to offer. Brentwood’s downtown features a year-round schedule of events for residents and visitors alike, including concerts and movies in the park, a Saturday morning farmers market, Fourth of July parade, Hometown Halloween and a holiday parade.
Even while celebrating Brentwood’s storied past, city leaders have their eyes on the future with upcoming
developments they hope will create a prosperous future for the city. One is the Innovation Center at Brentwood, a 400-acre parcel of land envisioned as a “next-generation business park and town center/mixed-used development.”
Other projects residents can look forward to include an expansive sports complex on Sand Creek Road and the opening of the Mokelumne Trail bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing, a foot bridge that will enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross Highway 4.
Brentwood invests in U-Pick capital, harvests big return
By Dawnmarie FehrEach spring and summer, the backroads of East County are filled with residents and visitors eager to grab fresh fruit right off the tree. The fields surrounding Oakley, Brentwood and Discovery Bay are filled with orchards, fruit stands and plenty of U-Pick opportunities, attracting more than 500,000 visitors annually and leading local officials to call the region the U-Pick Capital.
Harvest Time, a non-profit organization educating the community about agriculture and enhancing agri-tourism in the Brentwood region, runs the show.
To support this mission, the Brentwood City Council approved a deal with Harvest Time in February of this year, implementing a three-year staffing and marketing program. Brentwood agreed to earmark $81,400 per year for three years to fund the U-Pick Capital marketing program, with $55,000 going to pay for a part-time consultant on Harvest Time’s staff, and the remaining $26,400 for marketing efforts, according to local officials. This money, city officials say, comes from developers' fees.
“It’s a big deal that the City Council approved this (deal),” said Brentwood Assistant City
Manager Darin Gale. “It’s a significant amount of funding, and Harvest Time attracts half a million people annually to the U-Pick farms. This is the city’s effort to continue to support the region and grow our economy here.”
Harvest Time provides extensive information and opportunities to visitors and local businesses that benefit from Brentwood’s agricultural hub. For decades, the City of Brentwood collaborated with Harvest Time to draw visitors to prominent locations, including downtown Brentwood, Brentwood Boulevard, and The Streets of Brentwood.
Brentwood features more than 50 active U-Pick farms within a four-mile radius, drawing the majority of Harvest Time’s visitors. These farms allow for direct, hands-on experiences where visitors can harvest fresh fruits and vegetables at the peak of their season.
Enos said visiting U-Pick orchards supports local family farming operations, as most East County farms have been passed down through generations, starting in the 1940s.
“Word spread that Brentwood had amazing peaches and farmers realized that many of the customers preferred to pick their own fruit,” Enos said. “Since then, we have grown into the U-Pick Capital.”
Harvest Time worked with local historians to verify Brentwood has the oldest U-Pick farms west of the Allegheny Mountains, and the most U-Pick farms in the nation. Enos said the soil and weather conditions in East County produce some of the finest fruits and vegetables in the world.
Local farms offer U-Pick experiences for a range of products, including cherries, peaches, apricots, strawberries, olallieberries, mulberries, flowers, pumpkins and wine grapes.
“We are so excited that we are able to present our official designation as the U-Pick Capital and can't wait to welcome our locals to our farms,” Enos said.
“Having access to fresh fruit provides huge health benefits,” said Harvest Time President Jessica Enos. “Knowing where your food comes from and getting to experience and participate in the harvesting of the fruit first-hand is not something many people get to do.”

A growing community for growing families
An area rich with history, the City of Oakley is a growing community situated beside the Delta’s flowing waters.
Its first residents were the Miwok Indians, whose remains and artifacts from their daily lives have been found near Big Break Marina and Village Parkway. Randolph Marsh is credited for establishing Oakley as a town in 1897 after he purchased 12 acres. According to legend, Marsh and another settler couldn’t agree upon a name at the time, so they settled it with a cribbage game. Marsh’s idea to name the area Oakley — after its once-abundant trees — won
when the game ended in his favor.
Oakley, incorporated in July 1999, is one of California’s youngest cities. Since that time, Oakley has grown into a bustling city with a current population of more than 43,000. Residents can find a variety of restaurants, parks, community events and more in what’s commonly referred to as a place for families.
But business development is picking up steam.
Amazon, Pet Food Express and PA Pride Distribution tenants occupy the site of a 375.7-acre property at 6000 Bridgehead Road, north of the BNSF rail tracks and just south of Anthem Marina. Three of the five
buildings have been constructed, with all five buildings ranging between 150,000 and 480,000 square feet.
While the town sallies forth with development, much of the area remains true to its roots. Drivers passing through its country land can still find horseback riders traveling alongside the road, and Cypress Stables caters to the equine crowd. Dwelley Farms boasts a wide variety of fruits and vegetables grown locally along Delta Road. And Big Break Marina offers families a chance to get outdoors, while learning about wildlife and local geology in the heart of the Delta.

Activities abound in a waterfront community
Life on Bethel Island features a variety of residents who embrace the abundance of yearly waterfront events, including the Frozen Bun Run, ’50s Bash, Holiday Lighted Boat Parade and Opening Day on the Delta Boat Parade.
The Delta Coves development, featuring waterfront homes with private docks, has been a favorite among locals since it opened.
In the water, the Delta’s longstanding abundance of black bass,
striped bass, catfish, crappie, perch, bullhead and sturgeon lure fishermen on a national scale. Boaters can also find fun times and friendships at the San Joaquin Yacht Club.
The Bethel Island Municipal Advisory Council, established in the mid-1990s, is the voice of the residents on the island and for regional issues. The Bethel Island Municipal Improvement District (BIMID) provides levee maintenance and repair, and the Ironhouse Sanitary District (ISD) handles the island’s sewer services.

Rustic small town living
One of East County’s smallest communities, the unincorporated farming town of Byron, may be home to just over 1,300 residents, but it boasts plenty of charm.
Byron is governed by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors. The Byron Municipal Advisory Council (BMAC) — composed of local residents — advises the supervisors on local land-use, planning and zoning issues and represents Byron on the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) regarding annexation and boundary issues.
Another area agency, Reclamation District 800, is responsible for the maintenance and operation of levees in and around the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Reclamation District 800’s fivemember board of directors, elected by local landowners, governs the district.
The Byron-Bethany Irrigation District manages Byron’s irrigation water. BBID also provides management services and operations & maintenance support to the Byron Sanitary District, which provides wastewater and sewer services to Byron residents.
Police services for Byron are provided by the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff, and the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District provides fire and emergency services.
Tucked away in a corner of Bryon is one of the community’s best-kept secrets — the Patriots Jet Team (PJT) and Foundation. Located in a hangar in the Byron airport complex, PJT is made up of six pilots and a dedicated support crew from diverse aviation backgrounds. These men and women volunteer their time and knowledge to inspire a love of flight in local kids.
Byron is also home to the famous Byron Hot Springs. Its hotel, built in the late 1800s, reached its peak of popularity in the 1930s and was a destination for some of Hollywood’s brightest stars, including Clark Gable, who was known to enjoy the springs’ healing waters, mud baths and luxurious accommodations. While the skeleton of the hotel still sits in ruins, plans to restore the structure are being visited by developer Robert Cort, who submitted a pre-application review to county officials that proposes turning the inn into a brewery or winery and event center.

A small town with a storied past
In a town where the number of humans and horses is nearly equal, Knightsen prides itself on maintaining its rural, agricultural heritage. While neighboring towns have fallen to track-home developments and ballooned in size over recent years, Knightsen has remained small and full of rural charm.
Once a railroad station, the town was established in 1898 and named for its founder, George W. Knight, and his wife, Christina Christensen, whose names together formed Knightsen. The 4-H club founded in 1927 is California’s oldest 4-H chapter.
For a town with a long legacy, not
much has changed. Ranchettes dot the 14 square miles of land, which is also home to farms, produce stands, boarding facilities and a one-block downtown area with a few shops and a post office.
Another change for the sleepy town was in education. Old River Elementary School for kindergarten through sixthgrade students, making it the second school in the Knightsen Elementary School District.
However, it’s the things that haven’t changed, such as the Christmas parade (with a host of hooved participants) or the Knightsen Days car and tractor show, that keep Knightsen a living, breathing document of a more genial time.

A town where there's always something to do
Established in the early 1970s, Discovery Bay has evolved into a thriving year-round home for residents who enjoy small-town living against the backdrop of more than 1,200 miles of Delta waterways. Residents enjoy excellent tennis, and pickleball facilities, a championship golf course at the Discovery Bay Country Club and several concerts and events throughout the year. Water sports abound here, including boating, windsurfing, paddle boarding, fishing and swimming. Boaters can navigate from Discovery Bay to the San Francisco Bay, giving residents water access to just about anywhere from their own backyards.
The Town of Discovery Bay Community Services District provides water, wastewater, parks, landscaping and
recreation services. The board has five members who are elected by community residents.
Reclamation District 800 is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the town’s levee system. It also manages water drainage and circulation in the lakes and lagoons and is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees.
Discovery Bay’s Community Center provides many amenities, such as swimming, tennis, pickleball, a barbecue area, dog park and activities for all ages. The town boasts award-winning schools and is home to a full-service, deep-water yacht harbor with a chandlery, marina and shops. There are four shopping centers in town and a variety of commercial and retail outlets that include many places to dine.
East County: A great place for learning
Most East County students begin their education attending public schools in Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Byron, Discovery Bay and Knightsen.
As they grow older, they can continue to pursue their studies locally, as the East Bay is home to a variety of institutions of higher education, whether students are looking for two- or four-year colleges or careeroriented training.
Los Medanos College, a public community college in Pittsburg with a satellite campus in Brentwood, offers career technical and transfer opportunities that aim to “prepare students to excel and succeed economically, socially and intellectually in an innovative, engaging
and supportive learning environment.” Its most popular degree programs are Liberal Arts, Nursing, Engineering, Mathematics, English, Physics, Biology, Business, Behavioral Sciences, Fire Technology, Child Development, Administration of Justice, Process Technology, and Electrical and Instrumentation Technology.
The college is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It was once again named one of the country’s top 150 institutions by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, which aims to advance higher education practices, policies and leadership to significantly improve student outcomes,
especially for the growing population of lowincome students and students of color on American campuses.
Meanwhile, Contra Costa Career College in Antioch, a small, private vocational training school, strives to equip its students with the most current and comprehensive tools and technical training required to function in a variety of medical settings. It graduates more than 1,200 students annually from 14 programs, including Clinical Medical
Assisting, Dental Assisting, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Phlebotomy, and Pharmacy Technician training.

New pedestrian bridge a small but pivotal piece of a bigger vision for Brentwood
By Sean TongsonThe long-awaited Mokelumne Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge, which crosses over Highway 4 south of its interchange with Lone Tree Way, opened for use on March 20.
Completion of this bridge created a trail link connecting six counties across California from the East Bay to the Sierra Nevada as part of the larger, Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail.
“This is not just a path connecting two points; it is weaving communities together,” said Contra Costa Transportation Authority Executive Director Tim Haile. “This overcrossing will foster healthier lifestyles, safer travels, and a vibrant multi-modal future. We are excited to see the Brentwood and Contra Costa community enjoy this newly connected trail.”
The $13 million project was funded through Measure J taxpayer dollars, the State Route 4 Bypass Authority, and Bay Area bridge toll funds. Construction began in March 2022 with an intention to close a gap in the Mokelumne Trail that was created upon the construction of the Highway 4 extension. Spanning
2,600 feet, including 1,500 feet of bridge, the bridge also includes a width ranging from 12 to 16 feet to accommodate the potential for future autonomous shuttle travel.
“Currently, navigating the busy thoroughfare poses challenges for pedestrians, particularly those seeking access to the nearby shopping area,” said City of Brentwood Engineering Manager Steve Kersevan. “With the introduction of the bridge, individuals can safely traverse the highway, avoiding traffic hazards and reducing travel time. This newfound convenience promotes a healthier lifestyle by encouraging walking and cycling, ultimately contributing to the wellbeing of the community.”
The project was originally scheduled to be completed in fall 2023, but an issue with the ramps on the east end of the project, which did not meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, required the ramps to be modified by the CCTA (Contra Costa Transportation Authority). This delayed the grand opening to spring 2024,
when a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on March 20.
According to Kersevan, the new bridge will offer a safe alternative to vehicular access, with future plans in the area that also include the Brentwood Innovation Center, the proposed Costco, and the BART extension to Brentwood intended to facilitate seamless integration between local transit networks and regional transportation infrastructure.
“While the pedestrian bridge offers immediate benefits, its significance extends far into the future,” Kersevan said. “As BART becomes increasingly accessible to residents, the pedestrian bridge will play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable transportation options and reducing reliance on private vehicles. This forward-thinking approach to urban planning ensures that the community remains well-positioned for future growth and development.”

Serendipity Cellars at Lucier Family Vineyards
Serendipity Cellars in Brentwood is a bonded winery, family-owned by Bryan and Michele Lucay. It operates as a vine-to-bottle boutique winery producing fewer than 2,000 cases per year. Producing small lots of wine allows Bryan to devote his time to winemaking, growing topquality fruit in their vineyards and crafting quality wines in their cellars.
You may notice “Lucier Family Vineyards” on the labels; Lucier is the original French spelling of Lucay, the name adopted by Bryan’s great-grandfather, and Serendipity Cellars resides on the Lucier Family Vineyards property.
Serendipity Cellars is open to the public for drop-ins on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (under 21 allowed on the lawn area) and on Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. (21 and older only). Check their website (www.serendipitycellars. wine) beforehand for scheduled closings for private
events. Guests are invited to drop in and purchase wines by the glass or bottle during these visiting hours while enjoying the winery’s grounds.
