LUXMASTER KGP
HOW TO IMPROVE LAPPING OPERATIONS ON CERAMIC SLABS
Luxmaster KGP 5000 lapping lines provide comprehensive lapping operations thanks to the generous configuration options and their use of top level exclusive equipment. These lapping machines in fact use aluminium alloy cast spindles, which are lighter on the beam and allow extraordinary higher accelerations. On request, the Luxmaster KGP 5000 can be equipped with the Tango device, which adds an angular spindle positioning axis, making it possible to: • improve treatment on the slab edges, where small defects such as enamel accumulation or else can usually occur; if not treated as required, they could spoil the final general appearance of the product; • optimize the trajectories of the double heads on the slab, avoiding their superimposition.
4
www.tecnema.it
www.breton.it
Moreover, the KGP 5000 may be equipped with a hardware-software package that can automatically vary the working pressures of the individual heads along the machine’s transverse movement axis, e.g. to optimize the pressure on the slab edge. A “soft landing system has also been provided for the heads, whose goal is to reduce the aesthetic defects (haze) created by their abrupt landing on the slab when the machine has to be stopped, for example to replace the head abrasives. The Breton lapping lines can therefore ensure flexibility in production, uniform and top quality treatments, as well as reduced and predictable operating and maintenance cost. The enduring value of these lines is clearly evidenced by the high prices that used machines fetch on the market
5
SURFACE TREATMENT LINE
HOW TO SOLVE THE GHOST STAINS PROBLEM ON CERAMIC SLABS The solution proposed by Breton to aesthetic degradations - also known as “ghost stains - caused by the impurities that make the slab surface sensitive to environmental conditions and deteriorate the honing/lapping effect is a new all-in-one approach called Integrex.
Integrex therefore extends treatment versatility and productivity with a limited footprint on the production floor.
Integrex allows managing the several types of surface treatments with the purpose of improving both the appearance of the ceramic slabs and their duration. With current techniques, surface porosities are sealed and then the surface is polished using products that may or not require application by means of pressure or surface heating processes.

Depending on the specific needs, each treatment process variable may be managed and customized: • differentiate rotational speed among the several tool heads; • adjust the position of each spindle with decimal accuracy thanks to the “Soft Landing” device; • scale, store and recall the pressure on each spindle; • reduce the pressure induced by the weight of each head thanks to the independent digital control operating with a pneumatic counterpressure device; • adjust the treatment application effectiveness on the slab thanks to the digital ammeter fitted to each spindle to check motor absorption;
• differentiate the trajectory of the heads on the slab thanks to the unique Tango system, to improve the distribution and laying of the products to be applied to the slab surface; • the unique Tango system also ensures the traverse bridge moves smoothly both in acceleration and deceleration, to prevent product haze; • select the types of heads - spatulas or satellites in order to use different types of tools and processes; • pressurize the heads and preserve them from contaminants, reduce their maintenance requirements and extend their life cycle; • manage recipes based on materials, thanks to the specifically designed and developed software.

CUTTING-EDGE TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS FOR SQUARING OPERATIONS ON LARGE FORMATS The requirements of ceramic companies worldwide are evolving rapidly, driven by the increasing use of production plants that can make maxi ceramic slabs in sizes of up to 1800x3600 mm and by the desire to reduce batches in stock subdivided by measurement. Technological change brings the chance to
8
implement increasingly automated and performant solutions that can mitigate the efforts of specialized operators. With the new Ghibli automatic dry-squaring machine, the Tecnema Breton Group taps into change by offering the ceramic industry an automatic and technologically advanced
www.tecnema.it
visionary system that meets today the needs of tomorrow. The machine features many innovations, among which stands out the use of gauging spindles designed to work at high variable rotational speeds of up to 4900 rpm. Even when working at the highest rotational speed, their temperature variation with respect to the idle state is minimal: this means no dimensional variations induced by temperature.
www.breton.it
with absolute precision thanks to the independent pusher position control system patented by Tecnema Breton Group. The drive to boost production performance and finished product quality is greatly assisted by the tool wear checking and correction system. Specifically, the outbound tile dimensions can be monitored by means of thickness measurement lasers installed on both side squaring modules.
The orthogonalizing group, fitted at the input of the second grinding module, can automatically check and adjust diagonal dimensions
9
In addition, actual wear of the grinding wheels can be read directly with an automatic check-up performed by an ultra high precision laser probe. If any deviation is detected with respect to the programmed measurements, the operator can instruct the system to reposition the grinding wheels automatically to recover tool wear differences.
10
The synergy between Tecnema and Breton also created the new machine management and control electronics with Siemens PLCs, which is extremely reliable and whose replacement parts can and will be found all over the world for many years to come.
The squaring line can be integrated upline with a tile cutting system, operating exclusively in dry cutting mode. The tile cut is prepared by a longitudinal or
transverse scoring tool and is then completed on a splitting machine through the action of rollers that break the tile along the scored incisions.

MATTING LINE
A NEW PROCESS REINFORCES THE STRUCTURE OF CERAMIC SLABS
The ceramics market calls for increasingly large slabs of reduced thickness for a variety of different applications.
Therefore, it becomes especially important to reinforce their structure, to prevent both possible collapses and dangerous detachments of fragments.
To meet this need, Breton has developed an innovative line to glue mats with epoxy resin.
The line performs the complete processing cycle, from slabs loading to unloading, without human intervention.
To bond the mat correctly to the surface the process must provide for uniform application of polyurethane resin, placement of the mat on the resin coated surface and, finally, pressing of the mat onto the slab.
Line loading and unloading is carried out according to possible different slab storage methods: in fact, the robots placed at the beginning and at the end of the line allow placing them on pallets or A-frames, both horizontally and vertically.

To further enhance the quality of the reinforcing treatment and ensure the highest standards, the process includes multiple work table cleaning phases: from brushing when out of the oven to the application of a protective film that preservers the lower surface of the slabs while moved on the conveyor. The final phases of the process include a special innovation that allow achieving higher uniformity and quality yield on the one side, and, reducing the time required for such treatment on the other. Notably, the mat previously laid, aligned and glued to the slab initially undergoes hot pressing, which accelerates its catalysis; it is then gradually cooled by passing under a set of fans to accelerate its availability for possible subsequent processes.

ETERIAL CK ®
YOUR NEW HELPMATE FOR THIN CERAMIC SLABS
Thin ceramic slabs are becoming increasingly popular and more widely used in the interior decor and architectural sectors with a constantly growing range of applications, despite the limits posed by their intrinsic fragility. To meet emerging requirements on the market and extend the application possibilities of these slabs, Breton has developed and patented Eterial® CK, a completely new and unique product in its category. Eterial® CK addresses the demand for panels that combine very low weight with high thickness and strength, with an upgraded ceramic surface just a few millimetres thick.
14
www.tecnema.it
Eterial® CK is an ultralight panel from 2 to 4 cm thick, with an inorganic mineral base, specific gravity of around half that of wood, extremely strong, stable, resistant to fire, impermeable, insulating, and easy to machine, also dry. The material is designed to have a thermal expansion coefficient that is the same as that of ceramics, so the panel remains perfectly flat – even in changing ambient temperatures – once it has been bonded to a thin ceramic slab.
www.breton.it
The Eterial® CK / ceramic composite panel has huge potential for use in the furniture and interior design sector and for architectural projects in general. Eterial® CK is an eco sustainable material, primarily composed of recyclates and materials from renewable sources, ideal for bio-buildings and with a wide range of applications.

BRETON BY MISTRELLO
A NEW APPROACH TO MANAGING YOUR SLABS STORE
Ever smarter slab stores, extreme levels of automation, maximum workplace safety levels and space optimisation are emerging requirements also in the ceramics industry. Breton, has signed an exclusive agreement with Mistrello, a company with consolidated experience in the storage of slabbed materials, to offer highly flexible solutions that are perfectly suited to the extreme levels of customization demanded by the sector today.
16
The minimum surface area required to install a storage system of this type is 26 m2, which provides capacity of 145 slabs (single slab size of 3500x2200x20 mm), so there’s no need for masses of space. The automation level is highly customisable: starting from semi-automatic storage systems and culminating in super automated versions with very little need for the presence of operators.
www.tecnema.it
The main customer benefits can be summarised as: • increased storage capacity: the stored material occupies approximately one third of the space required by conventional A-frames; • reduced cost of the area to be used for the slabs store (rental/purchase of land and building); • improvement of the safety conditions for personnel: the ruggedness and safety of the system is guaranteed by installation of all elements on floor-mounted tracks,
www.breton.it
by the latest generation of anti-tipping measures and by overhead handling zones not accessible by personnel; • reduction of labour costs: the presence of personnel for inventory movements is reduced to the minimum so your workforce can be redeployed on higher value added activities; • increased productivity of plants: the times required to prepare slab packs is reduced thanks to the various tiers of automation introduced.

HURACAN
THE INNOVATIVE CUTTING LINE WITH PRE-CUTTING AND CHAMFERING FOR CERAMIC MATERIALS
Huracan is an innovative automatic ceramic slab cutting line with layout optimisation developed by Breton to meet a specific market demand.
Stratos, a Fiorano Modenese based company specialised in processing and finishing ceramic slabs for the interior decor and design sector, has chosen this machine for its structural robustness and high power (indispensable in order to cut slabs quickly and accurately), and also for its flexibility - an essential requirement in order to cut maxi format slabs down to the sizes required for clients’ environments, also with the possibility of managing veined materials in a unique manner.
18
Another unique and patented feature of the machine is its ability to cut and chamfer the side edge at the same time and on the same machine, since it is equipped (in the Edge version) with a special chamfering spindle in line with the cutting spindle which, thanks to a slab profile tracking device, executes the chamfer or a pre-cut, if required, with the slab still intact.
www.tecnema.it
A Huracan is equipped with optical systems to read the slab perimeter and surface and also cutting layout optimisation software designed to minimise waste. Cutting optimization is enabled by a set of
Suction cups pick-up system
www.breton.it
lifting suction cups that move the workpieces to the machine table to perform the programmed cutting pattern.
19
The system is mounted to fabricated steel shoulders or on concrete foundations; it can be equipped with automatic tool diameter monitoring and aligners to assure square positioning of pre-machined
slabs (i.e. slabs on which the perimeter has been trimmed before they are placed in storage pending downstream machining operations).
Rotary work table
Breton offers the new line in various solutions with 3 to 7 cutting spindles.
Automatic advanced nesting The system software allows optimized and efficient use of the slab surface area: the software offers different solutions for positioning and cutting the available surface area in accordance with the number of parts required and the required tile dimensions. The slab usage percentage is shown for each solution, both in total, and subdivided into work orders, allowing the operator to select the best solution; the operator can also override the proposed cutting layout by selecting the manual nesting option.

Several of these lines have already been acquired by market leading companies in their sectors. These lines may be configured based on the required automation level, size and capacity.
The starting material is normally composed of tiles or strips cut from slabs – such as slabs marred by chipping etc. – of lapped material, which are then cut into rectangles or squares of the required size, followed by corner bevelling and edge polishing. This results in the creation of perfect “calling cards” to present your products to the market.

SKIRTING TILE LINE
HOW TO CREATE STEPS, SKIRTING BOARDS AND OTHER SPECIAL PRODUCTS WITH SEVERAL BENEFITS The market is showing an increasingly interesting niche for operators specialized in the production of special components, steps and skirting boards no longer obtained from pressing processes but With this in mind, the Tecnema Breton Group is launching Skirting Tile Line, a special component production line that supports the need for higher production flexibility depending on customer demand, both for smaller batches and special formats; the line can actually manage formats from 60x150 mm up to 600x600 mm and more. The adoption of these semi-automatic processes involves further benefits for the producer, which

COMBICUT
IN CERAMIC SLAB MACHINING OPERATIONS
The widespread use of large format ceramic slabs in the interior decor sector has been accompanied by the development of increasingly sophisticated
technology dedicated to the processing and transformation of large surfaces for interior design, bathrooms and kitchens.
The starting point is the slab cutting phase. In general, the technological solutions available involve making a choice between the speed and economy of diamond blade cutting, and the versatility offered by waterjet cutting systems, despite the high costs involved.
By using Combicut, your fabshop can make use of both methods, even on the same cut, without having to move the slab: in fact, Combicut allows you to switch to waterjet cutting whenever conventional diamond blade cutting would produce unsatisfactory results.
32
www.tecnema.it
One example is a 45° cut through the slab thickness (to create a mitre) in order to glue a downstand apron to the edge of the worktop. To guarantee the maximum cutting precision, even when working with slabs that are not perfectly flat, Breton uses the hardware/software package installed on Combicut. Called MiterWave, this system employs a laser device to sample the slab Processed without Miterwave
www.breton.it
surface and define its precise shape along the cutting line before actually making the cut. This results in the generation of a curved cutting path (impossible to follow with a diamond blade) which, when interpolated by the waterjet, will produce straight pieces even when starting from curved surfaces.
Processed with Miterwave
33
Another application concerns cases when space is insufficient for the blade to complete a straight cut without cutting into the material adjacent to the workpiece. To get around this problem, Combicut allows the majority of the cut to be made using the blade to benefit from the low cost and high speed of this cutting process, subsequently switching to the waterjet system for the final few centimetres. For worktops designed for kitchens that require a
34
slightly inclined surface for water run-off, Breton has developed a specific add-on software module for making cuts with a variable angle of inclination using the waterjet system. It should be stressed that piercing, which is already minimal, is usually completely absent during final finishing of the piece. This system is extremely valuable when applied to pieces featuring full body veining used to make inclined surfaces with “bookmatch veining.
BRETON VEIN MATCHING
HOW TO CREATE THE BOOKMATCH VEINING AESTHETIC EFFECT Programming slab cuts with bookmatch veining has never been an easy task, especially when matching different faces of the same unit. Today however, this technique is readily available thanks to the new Breton Vein Matching software. It is capable of simultaneously managing up to 8 slabs, and it offers a 3D image of the project starting from the project’s 2D drawing in DXF format. This system means that the final aesthetic result obtained by combining pieces can be assessed before making the cuts, fully evaluating the
36
“bookmatch veining” effect in its entirety, and sharing previews with customers to receive their approval before proceeding. Different materials and thicknesses can be used at the same time to prepare alternative solutions of the same project, which may then be compared before actually proceeding. The software allows you to continuously view the final result even during its creation, and also to carry out modifications while working; this means maximum flexibility and being able to evaluate the highest possible range of available combinations and effects.

Final definition of the components
Thanks to real-time processing, you can assess and adjust the finished result of the project in accordance with the desired bookmatch veining effect, by modifying positioning and orientation of the pieces directly.
7
6
Final view export to be proposed to the client
At the end of the development phase, the final view’s layout may be exported and shown to the client for final evaluation.
The procedure may be repeated at will to offer infinite variations to the client. Once the client has made his/her choice, all you have to do is launch the approved project in the machine to start actual production. Vein Matching can be used to generate cutting programs on any Breton CNC machine.
38
Miterwave and Combicut Still a perfect mitre with uneven slabs All too frequently slabs are not perfectly flat and bad cutting, or imperfect calibrations are very common. When you want to get a perfect 45° cut (mitre) with a machine, you have to work hard and the result is not guaranteed. • The Breton MiterWave hardware/software package enables you to execute perfect 45° cuts on uneven slabs. • MiterWave, specialising in ceramic slab, automatically corrects the cutting paths for a perfect result. • MiterWave can be installed on CombiCut machines, even existing ones.
