GEORGIA MIXING YOUTH WITH EXPERIENCE IN 2015 Georgia will enter the 2015 season looking to repeat as SEC Tournament Champions and make a deep run into the NCAA Tournament which will take place in Waco, Texas this May. The Bulldogs return four (Lauren Herring, Silvia Garcia, Mia King, and Caroline Brinson) from the 2014 squad, all of whom saw action during conference and postseason play last year. Of those four Bulldogs, two (Herring and Garcia) were All-Americans a season ago. In addition to the four returners, Georgia welcomes five newcomers to the mix, as Ellen Perez, Hannah King, Mariana Gould, Laura Patterson, and Kennedy Shaffer will all compete for the first time on the collegiate stage this season.

Following the conclusion of the fall matches, head coach Jeff Wallace, now in his 30th season at the helm of the program, reflected on the fall and talked about his expectations for the upcoming spring dual match season: Looking back, how do you think the fall went for the team?

Wallace: I think we had a really busy fall. We competed in a lot of tournaments and I thought it was great for this team in this particular year, with how many new players we have, to get the experience of traveling together and learning what a college fall is all about. Overall I thought it went really well. I thought the training was good and that some of the things we did to try to get these young ladies to become a team were very successful. We’re really excited with where we ended up, but more than that we’re just really looking forward to getting things started in January when we start competing as a team.

There are five freshmen on the team this season. What kind of impact can we expect them to have?

Wallace: It’s a fun year for us because we have so many new players and they are all really good. We realize that a great deal of our lineup is going to be made up of freshmen, but they are talented, hardworking, and excited to be here to start competing and traveling as a team.

Obviously we’ve got some great returning players, and that, along with the nucleus of new players, will create an environment that should make for a very exciting year for us.

Where do you think the leadership will come from on this year’s team?

Wallace: Lauren is our senior and you always look to those upperclassmen, along with Silvia and Mia, to give you some leadership. But at the same time, we went through a leadership course in the fall semester and what we really discovered is that everybody can lead and everybody needs to lead. As a small team of nine people, all of us will need to assume a leadership role at one time or another.

a good thing. We’ve got a really tough non-conference schedule, too, and you’ve got to play the best to know where you stack up. That’s always been my theory, so we’re going to have our opportunities and challenges with a strong schedule, but that’s what we’re looking forward to.

What can you say about assistant coach Drake Bernstein and everything he has brought to the table for your program?

Wallace: Bringing in Drake as an assistant coach has added a great deal to our program. I really feel that everything he brings each and every day has been outstanding both on and off the court.

He’s been a huge help and has done a great job developing these student athletes. I think his recent playing experience and abilities as both a player and coach have added a great dynamic to this program. The mental edge that I think he’s instilling in our players is fantastic and his addition to this team has been absolutely great. We’re fired up that he’s here and we are looking forward to continuing to work with him.

This team is great on the court, but also very accomplished off of it. Why is having such a well-rounded program important?

Wallace: I think it’s important for the student athletes in our tennis program to be well-rounded.

We’ve been fortunate enough that we’ve been able to do some outside community service projects.

One of the things that we look forward to each year is working with Habitat for Humanity. We’ve been going to Greensboro to help build houses and that’s been a great experience for our players.

It’s hard work but it’s very rewarding. I think it’s great for these guys to reach out and give a little back and I think they really enjoy that, too. We also strive for success in the classroom. We’ve had numerous players earn academic honors and have consistently posted a 100% graduation success rate that leads the nation, and all of that really means a lot to us. We not only emphasize the importance of being champions on the court, but also the importance of being successful off of it.

Georgia led the nation in attendance last season and obviously has a strong fan base.

What can the supporters look forward to this spring?

Wallace: We’ve got a lot of great matches coming up at home this season. Following the ITA Kickoff Weekend we get to start things off with the Georgia Tech match, and that’s always really exciting. We’ve also got some really big SEC matches here at home. Last year we led the nation in attendance and that’s something we would like to repeat this year. It’s always exciting for our players to play in front of a great crowd during our big home matches. I felt like last year it really helped us. I remember our Virginia match, indoors, had a really phenomenal crowd and that’s what college tennis is really all about. Whether we go on the road, and especially at home, we like it when a lot of people are out there cheering for us and even against us when we’re away. It just makes for a really exciting environment. We’re really excited with how many fans we’ve had come out and we want to keep cultivating relationships with this community so that more and more people get interested and come out and support our team each year.

Last year’s team won an SEC Tournament title, advanced to the quarterfinals at the NCAA tournament, and finished the season ranked No. 4 in the nation. What can we expect from this year’s team?

Wallace: It’s interesting because after finishing No. 3 in the country about six seasons ago we dropped to about No. 18 in the next, but since then have finished at No.’s 8, 6, 5, and 4, so we’ve been steadily progressing in the right direction. Last year was a great year and we lost three great seniors but we’ve got a lot of really good freshmen that have arrived to join our experienced returners. It could be a really special year for us.

How strong is the league competition looking this year as Georgia seeks its secondstraight SEC title?

Wallace: The preseason rankings came out and five of the top 11 teams in the country were in the SEC. So, once again we are playing in the toughest, best conference in the country and that’s

As the nation’s winningest active women’s tennis coach, Jeff Wallace has built the Georgia Bulldogs into one of the elite college programs that both wins and plays host to NCAA Championships. The 2013-14 season marked his 29th year with the Bulldogs.

Tournaments and has advanced to the “Final Four” 10 times.

Only once during his time as coach of the Bulldogs has the team missed the NCAA Tournament, and that was his first year back in 1986.

In 2014, Wallace garnered ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors after the Bulldogs enjoyed another banner season, going 24-5 with a final ranking of No. 4. Georgia captured the SEC Tournament title, the NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 overall seed for the first time in school history, advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals plus saw the top duo of Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase reach the NCAA Doubles Final. Also, the program led the nation in attendance including drawing more than 600 fans to three matches during the season.

A 1985 graduate of the University of Georgia, Wallace capped his playing career under legendary Bulldog head coach Dan Magill in 1984 after winning the SEC singles title at the No. 6 spot. The very next season, his first as coach of the Bulldogs, Wallace led a struggling team up the path of respectability by posting a 20-9 mark and landing a spot in the final Volvo Tennis/ ITCA Top 25 poll. In 1987, just two years removed from a losing record, Georgia advanced to the national championship match.

Although they didn’t win it that year, the Bulldogs would have their day.

In 2013, Wallace became one of three coaches in women’s tennis history to reach the 600-win plateau. He is one of five active collegiate tennis coaches with at least 600 wins, and is one of five UGA coaches to reach the mark. In 2009 following another memorable campaign when Georgia advanced to its 10th NCAA Final Four, Wallace became the first person to ever be named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Coach of the Year four times. The 2010 season featured Chelsey Gullickson winning the NCAA singles title at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The past four years, Georgia has finished the year ranked in the top eight after reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships.

A Proven Winner

During his tenure, Wallace’s squads have claimed two NCAA championships, three USTA/ITA National Team Indoor titles, eight Southeastern Conference crowns and six SEC Tournament titles. A four-time National Coach of the Year recipient and four-time SEC Coach of the Year, Wallace’s career record entering the 2015 season is 631-155. His .803 winning percentage is the best among active Division I coaches with a minimum of 500 victories.

Wallace’s teams are the picture of consistency. With the 2014 NCAA bid, Georgia has appeared in 28 straight NCAA

The 1994 season ranks as one of the most dominant ever in women’s tennis history. It found Georgia on the champion’s pedestal in every major team tournament possible: NCAA Champions, USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Champions, and SEC regular season and tournament champions. Top that all off with a 27-2 overall record including a perfect 14-0 SEC mark and a season sweep of arch-rival Florida and it’s easy to see why Wallace was named coach of the year.

The 2000 Bulldogs went 27-2, winning the Southeastern Conference title and the NCAA National Championship. In the title match on the campus of Pepperdine, Georgia dethroned the defending champion Stanford Cardinal 5-4, snapping a 48-match winning streak. Wallace was named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year.

USTA/ITA National Team Indoors

Under Wallace, the Bulldogs have been among the most successful teams at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The annual event attracts the nation’s finest programs. The Bulldogs have won the title three times (1994, 1995, 2002) and have reached at least the semifinals 15 times.

Developing Talent

His record for developing players and having them maximize their potential has been evident throughout his tenure. Last season he guided the team to a 24-5 record and the program’s seventh SEC Tournament title. The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals and finished with a No. 4 national ranking. In 2013, the Bulldogs won their ninth regular season SEC championship after going 24-4 and clinching its third consecutive 20-plus win season. The Bulldogs went undefeated at home (14-0) for the first time since 2009 and 12th time in program history. In 2001, Agata Cioroch arrived from Poland and played No. 5 for the Bulldogs as a freshman. Two years later, she became Georgia’s top talent and in 2004 was the No. 1-ranked player in college tennis for much of the season. Cioroch concluded her career as a five-time All-American with two grand slam singles titles.

Strong doubles teams are a key component for a successful college tennis team. There have been six Bulldog tandems under Wallace to finish the season ranked No. 1.

In 2009, two of Georgia’s top players were freshmen: Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist, and by the end of the year they had earned All-America honors. Gullickson was named the ITA National Rookie of the Year, advanced to the NCAA Singles semifinals and tied a school record with 69 combined wins. Gullickson and Gilchrist became the first freshmen in school history to play No. 1 doubles in the lineup.

In 2010, the pair earned All-America honors again and Gullickson became the second Bulldog to win an NCAA singles title in Athens under Wallace and the third overall in the history of the program.

She would finish her career in 2012 as the school’s first ever eight-time All-American and own the record for victories. Meanwhile, Lauren Herring became the fourth Bulldog under Wallace to be named SEC Freshman of the Year and the sophomore All-SEC tandem of Maho Kowase and Lilly Kimbell posted a school record of their own by going 22-0 at No. 3.

While the depth of talent can vary each season, the results remain consistent. This was no more evident than in 2002. Despite having only one player earn All-America honors, Georgia went undefeated during the regular season, won the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor title, the SEC championship and advanced to the NCAA “Final Four.” The 2002 squad finished with a 26-2 record and final national ranking of No. 3. Georgia went 13-0 at home and extended its home winning streak to 50 straight.

Success in the Wallace Era

In 25 of the past 29 seasons, Georgia has finished with a top-10 national ranking including No. 1 in 1994 and 2000. In the Wallace era, seven Bulldogs have won grand slam titles, two have won the Honda-Broderick Award/tennis, 30 Bulldogs have earned All-America honors 96 times, and 49 different Bulldogs have been listed on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Family

A native of Portland, Oregon, Wallace is married to the former Sabina Marie Horne. They have two children, Brittany Sabina (25) and Jarryd Jeffrey (24). Brittany is a graduate of Valdosta State and is working in Atlanta while Jarryd is training full-time as a sprinter for the U.S. Paralympic Team. Jarryd competed in the 2012 Paralympics in London. In November of 2011, Jarryd, a world record holder, captured a gold medal in the 100m race at the Parapan American Games in Mexico as a member of the United States Paralympic Team.

Sabina, a former All-SEC distance runner at Georgia, was inducted into the North Bay (Ontario, Canada) Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. She has continued to run competitively and has helped Wallace train for road races and marathons. Sabina is the track representative for Georgia’s “G” club, an alumni association for University of Georgia letter-winners. Also, Wallace received the 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Recreation and Leisure Studies department of the University of Georgia’s College of Education.

Drake bernstein Assistant Coach | 3rd Season Georgia ‘11

Drake Bernstein enters his third year as UGA assistant women’s tennis coach in 2014-15. A member of the 2008 national champion Georgia men’s tennis team, Bernstein was named to his current position in July of 2012.

Last season, Bernstein assisted Coach Wallace in guiding the Bulldogs to a 24-5 record, No. 4 national ranking, and a quarterfinals appearance at the 2014 NCAA Championships. He was also present to help lead Georgia to its seventh SEC tournament title.

In his first season as assistant back in 2012-13, Bernstein helped Georgia to a 24-4 record, an NCAA Quarterfinals appearance, and a final ranking of No. 5. He also helped the program win its first SEC Championship since 2009.

A native of nearby Winder, Ga., Bernstein returned to Georgia prior to the 2012-13 campaign after spending one season as an assistant coach for the University of Alabama women’s tennis team. The Crimson Tide finished the season No. 11; their highest final ranking in program history. Alabama posted an 18-5 record, claimed the SEC Western Division with a 10-1 league mark and played host to an NCAA Regional for the first time in school history.

Bernstein graduated from the University of Georgia in May 2011 with a degree in sports studies. He compiled a career record of 112-44 in singles and 84-56 in doubles and is one of only 14 players in Bulldog history to win over 100 career singles matches. As a senior, he earned All-SEC Second Team honors and was the recipient of the Dick Copas Leadership Award while serving as a team captain.

The Georgia men’s tennis team reached the NCAA semifinals in three of Bernstein’s four seasons in Athens including the national championship run in 2008, his freshman year. Bernstein enjoyed a stellar prep career at Winder-Barrow High School, registering an 82-1 record that included 79 consecutive victories. He was named the 2007 Athens Banner-Herald Boys Tennis Player of the Year and was a three-time Athens Banner-Herald All-Northeast Georgia selection. He helped Winder-Barrow to its first state tournament appearance in 2006 and again in 2007.

Matt Williams arrives at Georgia following a year as an assistant tennis coach at Southern Wesleyan University in Central, S.C., where he helped the Warriors qualify for the 2014 SSAC Conference Tournament.

In addition to his time with SWU, Williams has also served as a counselor for tennis camps at Clemson and Georgia. Most recently, he helped with both the Manny Diaz Bulldog Tennis Camp and Jeff Wallace Bulldog Tennis Camp this past summer in Athens.

Williams graduated from Mercer University with a B.S. in Chemistry in May 2012 and is currently working on obtaining an M.S. in Sport Pedagogy from the University of Georgia.

Lindsay McManus

Athletic Trainer | 1st Season | Keene St. ‘13

Lindsay McManus is entering her first season as the athletic trainer for the University of Georgia women’s tennis team.

McManus arrived in Athens in August 2014 to pursue her M.S. in Kinesiology with a concentration on Athletic Training. She is currently serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer to the UGA Athletics Association.

Prior to arriving at UGA, McManus did rotations with all of Keene State College’s (New Hampshire) Div. III sports programs. She also performed rotations with Franklin Pierce University’s Div. II field hockey team and the Cheshire Medicine Sports Orthopedic Clinic. She graduated from Kenne State in 2013 with a B.S. in Athletic Training and was a member of the varsity lacrosse team. She has also volunteered as a finish line medical assistant at the Boston Marathon for the past two years.

2014 Season review 2014 SEASON REVIEW: Georgia (24-5, 11-2 SEC), No. 4 Final Ranking

SEASON IN REVIEW: The Bulldogs made their 28th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance last season, falling in the NCAA Quarterfinals to No. 8 Florida, 4-1. Georgia beat Elon (First Round), Florida State (Second Round) and Southern California (Round of 16) en route to its 22nd quarterfinal appearance in program history. Georgia is 70-26 all-time in the NCAA Championships. For the first time in school history, Georgia entered the NCAA Tournament as the country’s No. 1 overall seed.

Georgia went 24-5 knocking off 10 top-25 opponents, five of which were among the nation’s top 10. The Bulldogs won their seventh SEC Tournament Championship, beating No. 53 LSU, No. 11 Vanderbilt and No. 3 Alabama in three straight days. The Bulldogs’ wins over Vanderbilt and Alabama both avenged regular season losses.

The Bulldogs’ final 24-5 record gave them their 22nd 20+ win season in program history and a final national ranking of No. 4.

BULLDOGS IN NCAA SINGLES AND DOUBLES: Junior Lauren Herring and senior Maho Kowase advanced to the finals of the NCAA doubles tournament, becoming the fifth Bulldog pair to advance to the finals. Georgia tandems are still in search of their first national title. In singles, Herring advanced to the Round of 32 and sophomore Silvia Garcia advanced to the Round of 16.

SEC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS: It’s safe to say that the 2014 squad will always have fond memories of the program’s first trip to Columbia, Mo. Georgia beat LSU, before avenging regular season losses to No. 11 Vanderbilt and No. 3 Alabama en route to the program’s seventh SEC Tournament Title, and first since 2009. Lilly Kimbell and Silvia Garcia were named to the All-Tournament team, with Garcia also taking home Tournament MVP honors.

TOP DAWGS: The Georgia women’s tennis team was ranked No. 4 in the ITA’s final rankings of 2014. In addition, the Bulldogs had four singles players and three doubles pairs in the final individual rankings. Lauren Herring headlined the Georgia contingent at the No. 7 spot. Silvia Garcia and Maho Kowase followed at No’s. 13 and 23, respectively. Lilly Kimbell rounded out Georgia’s presence in the singles rankings at No. 106.

In doubles, after their deep run into the NCAA doubles championship, Herring and Kowase finished ranked No. 2, while Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia concluded the season at No. 24. Lilly Kimbell was also ranked with Mia King at No. 71.

The Georgia women’s tennis program was the only one in the SEC to have three singles players ranked in the top 25 and the only school in the SEC to have two doubles pairs ranked in the top 25. It was also one of just three programs in the country to have three singles players finish the year in the top 25 (Cal, UCLA). Perhaps most impressive, Georgia was the only school in the country to have three players ranked in the final top-25 singles and doubles rankings. As a school, Georgia was one of five schools in the country to have both its men’s and women’s programs ranked inside the top 10.

DAWGS. ALWAYS: Georgia said goodbye to three seniors (Kowase, Kimbell, Fuller) who made a lasting impact on the program. The class will certainly go down as one of the winningest and most effective classes in program history. Here’s why: • They combined for 318 singles wins and 342 doubles wins.

• They held a 75.4 singles and 77.4 doubles winning percentage.

• They made three NCAA Quarterfinal appearances , won an SEC regular season and tournament championship.

ALL-AMERICANS: Three players took home four All-American honors last season.

By virtue of being seeded in their respective draws, Lauren Herring and Silvia Garcia earned singles All-American honors and Herring and Maho Kowase earned doubles All-American honors. In the Jeff Wallace era, 30 different Bulldogs have garnered 96 All-American honors.

ADDITIONAL HONORS AND AWARDS: • Three members of the Georgia women’s tennis team were named to the All-SEC First Team, and one was named the SEC Player of the Year.

• Junior Lauren Herring was awarded SEC Player of the Year Honors and she, senior Maho Kowase and sophomore Silvia Garcia were named to the All-SEC First Team. Georgia is one of just two schools to have three players included on the top All-SEC team.

• Senior Kate Fuller was named to the SEC Community Service Team. She is the SEC’s first four-time honoree since the award expanded to include a team for each individual sport in 2003. Also, for the second straight year, Kate Fuller won the region’s Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership award. Earlier this spring, Fuller was also a 2014 Georgia “Peach of an Athlete” collegiate nominee for her work in the classroom and in the community.

• Lilly Kimbell was awarded ITA Regional Most Improved Senior of the Year. She was a career-best 30-8 in singles this season.

• Maho Kowase was named ITA Region Senior of the Year and the region’s winner of the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship. In early May, it was announced that she won the ITA’s National Cissie Leary Award.

• Head Coach Jeff Wallace and Assistant Coach Drake Bernstein each won ITA Regional Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the year honors, respectively. Wallace, who this season led Georgia to its first No. 1 overall seed in program history and the program’s 23rd 20-win season, has now won four ITA regional coaching awards. This is the first such honor for Bernstein.

• Junior Lauren Herring garnered SEC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 29 and March 19.

• After Georgia won the 2014 SEC Tournament, Kimbell and Garcia were named to the AllTournament team. Garcia was also named the tournament’s MVP. • Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase earned places in the 2014 ITA Collegiate All-Star Team after the pair’s impressive doubles performances at the 2013 ITA Southeast Regional, 2013 National Indoor Championships,and 2014 NCAA Championships.

SEC REGULAR SEASON championships

Georgia claimed its first SEC title, going 8-1 in the regular season and then sweeping through the league tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala. At the SEC Tournament, Georgia avenged its only league loss of the year, defeating Florida 5-4 in the final. For the second straight year, Lisa Spain earned All-America honors, compiling a 32-4 mark and advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. Also, Maxxine Kaufman and Dot Higgins played key roles during the season and in the SEC Tournament.

Georgia captured its second SEC title with a four-point margin over rival Florida (29-25) after a stellar showing in the league tournament. Stacey Schefflin (No. 2 singles), Caryn Moss (No. 3 singles, No. 3 Doubles) and Jill Waldman (No. 5 singles, No. 3 doubles) earned first place finishes in their SEC flights. Schefflin, Moss and Shannan McCarthy earned All-America honors and McCarthy was named the National-Player-to-Watch. Waldman and Amila Fetahagic were named Academic All-Americans.

Georgia recorded its first-ever perfect regular season mark against SEC opponents including six shutouts and halted Florida’s sixyear SEC winning streak. The fourth-ranked Bulldogs began league play with a 5-4 win over third-ranked Florida. The Lady Gators shared the league title after a 5-2 win over Georgia in the SEC Tournament final. For the second year in a row, Shannan McCarthy, Stacey Schefflin and Caryn Moss earned All-America honors and Schefflin was named the National Senior-of-the Year.

Georgia’s magical season began with a USTA/ITA National Indoor team title in March and continued through conference play as they went undefeated in the SEC. The NCAA champions posted three wins over Florida during the year. At one point, Georgia’s entire lineup was ranked among the top 100. Four Bulldogs earned All-America honors, seven made All-SEC including Angela Lettiere who went on to win the NCAA singles title and was named College Player-of-the-Year, National-Senior-of-the-Year and SEC Playerof-the Year. Lettiere and Michelle Anderson won the USTA/ITA national indoor doubles title too and ended the year ranked No. 1.

Georgia extended its home match winning streak to 50 and posted several impressive road victories to help garner its sixth SEC title.

The Bulldogs began their winning ways with another USTA/ITA National Team Indoor title and then went undefeated in conference play. Agata Cioroch headlined the squad as she was named the ITA National-Player-to-Watch, was the lone All-American and was one of five players to be named All-SEC. Alexandra Smith earned MVP honors as she came up big with clinching wins over secondranked Vanderbilt in Nashville, at top-ranked Florida and South Alabama in the NCAA Championships with the match on the line.

The Bulldogs returned to the top of the league in 2007 behind a 10-1 performance in the SEC. One of those 10 wins came against No. 1 Florida, the reigning SEC Champs. That victory catapulted the Bulldogs to the top ranking in the country for the first time since their last SEC Championship in 2002. Georgia went on the win the SEC Tournament as well, upending the five-time defending Gators once more. Senior Natalie Frazier was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for her undefeated performance at the No. 1 slot. She was named to the All-SEC team as well along with Monika Dancevic, Yvette Hyndman and Darya Ivanov. Frazier, Hyndman and Ivanov became All-Americans as well.

The Bulldogs claimed another SEC title in 2009 behind a 10-1 performance in the SEC and then followed that up with their third straight SEC Tournament crown and an NCAA Final Four showing. Senior Monika Dancevic was the SEC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player for her steady performance at the No. 4 slot in singles and No. 2 doubles. She was named to the first team All-SEC team along with \ well freshmen Nadja Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson. The freshmen duo earned All-America honors too.

Georgia won its ninth SEC championship after going 12-1 in SEC play, including wins on the road over No.3 Texas A&M and No. 8 Alabama. Along with the men, it was the fourth time in history that both the men’s and womens team’s have won the SEC regular season title in the same year. The Bulldogs went on the road to clinch the title, first beating No. 22 Auburn 4-0 and then topping No. 8 Alabama 4-0. Georgia had four represenatives on the All-SEC Teams; Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase were named to the first team, while Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia were named to the second team. Garcia was also named to the conference’s All-Freshman Team.

DAN MAGILL TENNIS COMPLEX

DAN MAGILL (1921-2014) The University of Georgia tennis programs owe much to the hard work and dedication of legendary Bulldog Dan Magill.

He developed the Georgia tennis complex into the finest on-campus tennis facility in the country which includes 12 outdoor courts, four indoor, and grandstand and private box seating for 5,000. He also spearheaded the move to locate the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame facility on the Georgia campus. For his efforts, the entire facility was officially named the “Dan Magill Tennis Complex” in 1993.

The Dan Magill Tennis Complex has long stood as a beacon of excellence in collegiate tennis. With a total of 16 courts (12 outdoor and four indoor) and a total seating capacity of more than 5,000 fans, it is one of the largest on-campus tennis facilities in the country. The ever-evolving complex underwent a $7.5 million development and renovation project in 2002 that included the construction of brand-new clubhouses for the men’s and women’s programs. In 1991, the complex received lights thanks to the generous support of Oscarwinning actress and Athens native, Kim Basinger.

Regarded as one of the best collegiate tennis facilites in America, the complex hosted the men’s NCAA Championships a total of 24 times, the women’s Championships three times and both genders four times, most recently in 2014. It played host to 13 NCAA Championship in a row from 1977-89. In 2006, the NCAA opted to have one combined site for the men’s and women’s tennis championships. Georgia has served as a host for the combined NCAA Tennis Championships in 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2014, and it will return to Athens again in 2017.

Five of Georgia’s six National Championships in men’s tennis and one of the two women’s NCAA titles were won on their home courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Aside from Georgia’s best players, the Magill Tennis Complex has hosted classic matchups featuring such stars as John McEnroe and the Bryan brothers. Former Bulldog All-American John Isner is having a successful professional career ranked in the top 20 in the world. Former Bulldog Chelsey Gullickson captured the 2010 NCAA singles title at the Magill Tennis Complex and went on to play in the US Open in singles and doubles.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The UGA women’s tennis team has a long-standing history of service to the Athens and northeast Georgia communities. The team most recently embarked on two community service projects in the area with Habitat for Humanity in September and the Salvation Army Angel Tree initiative in December. Coach Wallace’s dedication to building character and well-rounded student-athletes extends far beyond the most recent season, though. Since the SEC began handing out the honor in 2004, a UGA women’s tennis player has appeared on the SEC Community Service Team each season. In addition, the Bulldogs are one of the most decorated programs in the nation when it comes to academic awards. The program has posted a 100% Graduation Success Rate (GSR) since the NCAA began tracking academic progress in 2006 and has had 85 athletes earn a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll since 1984. All of this speaks volumes to the team’s ability to pursue excellence both on and off the court.

CONSECUTIVE SEASONS WITH A PERFECT GSR RATE Since the NCAA began keeping track of the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in 2006, the UGA women’s tennis team has posted a perfect 100% mark each season. This speaks volumes to the program’s ability to compete on the court, in the community and in the classroom.

Ensuring the Future of UGA Athletics

The Athletic Scholarship Endowment Program was instituted to allow supporters of the University of Georgia Athletic Association to invest in the educational opportunities of UGA student-athletes. The program is vital to the future of Georgia Athletics by providing the long-term solution of keeping pace with escalating expenses. A gift to establish a scholarship provides income towards funding a scholarship each year and permanently memorializes the donor or any individual whose honor the scholarship is named. A full scholarship is endowed through a gift of $150,000.

There are four women’s tennis scholarship endowments including one established by the UGAAA in honor of the 2000 team which won both the NCAA and SEC titles. Leighton Ballew Scholarship Endowment Silvia Garcia is the 2014-15 recipient of the Leighton Ballew tennis scholarship. It is awarded annually to an international student-athlete who has demonstrated commitment to the University in an outstanding manner, both in the classroom and on the court. If no international student-athlete exists, selection of a student-athlete recipient is based on the aforementioned criteria.

The late Mr. Ballew was a UGA faculty member for 40 years and founded the drama department.

Barbara Hartman Howell Scholarship Endowment Caroline Brinson is the 2014-15 recipient of the Barbara Hartman Howell tennis scholarship. It is awarded annually to a scholar-athlete on the women’s tennis team who has a stated purpose of graduating.

The scholarship was established by Barbara Hartman Howell’s lifelong friends Vickie Pruitt Farmer and Leon Farmer, Jr. for her many years of dedication to and love of the Georgia Athletic Association and in memory of her daughter, Amanda, who passed away suddenly on July 22, 2007 at the tender age of 26. Vickie and Barbara graduated from Athens High School Class of 1969 and were Phi Mu sorority sisters at UGA.

Vickie Farmer Scholarship Endowment As natives of Athens, Ga., Vickie and Leon Farmer have been enthusiastic supporters of the Bulldog sports program for many years.

Graduates of the University of Georgia, Vickie (AB ’73) and Leon (BBA ’64 and JD ’67) have fully funded multiple scholarships for studentathletes in 12 different Bulldog sports. A women’s tennis student-athlete received one of these endowments in 2006 (Shadisha Robinson) and 2007 (Natalie Frazier).

Doris Marie Ramsey Scholarship Endowment Established by the late Bernard B. Ramsey in honor of his beloved wife, Doris Marie Ramsey, this endowment creates 10 athletic scholarships, continuing the legacy of the Ramsey name.

These scholarships benefit two scholar-athletes in football, two in other men’s sports, two in women’s sports, and four pursuing postgraduate educations at UGA. Women’s tennis standout Alexandra Smith was a recipient of one of these scholarships from 2002-04. Junior women’s tennis player Lauren Herring was a recipient in 2013-14.

Doyle E. Mote Scholarship Endowment Lauren Herring is the 2014-15 recipient of the Doyle E. Mote women’s tennis scholarship. It is awarded annually to an all-around student-athlete who is a good student and loves the game of tennis.

This scholarship endowment was established by Lillian Jensen Mote in loving memory of her husband, Doyle E. Mote. Originally from Calhoun, Doyle graduated from the University’s School of Pharmacy in 1950 and was a pharmacist in Lynchburg, Va., for 36 years.

UGAAA Women’s Tennis Scholarship Endowment Hannah King is the 2014-15 recipient of the UGAA women’s tennis scholarship. It is awarded annually to a student-athlete who best demonstrates outstanding character, leadership and dedication to the University, the women’s tennis team and the community.

This scholarship endowment was established by the University of Georgia Athletic Association in 2000 in honor of the 2000 women’s tennis team. The 2000 squad captured its fifth SEC title and its second national championship crown. The 2002-03 season marked the first year the UGAA Women’s Tennis Scholarship Endowment was awarded.
