All practices are open to the media unless otherwise specified. Interviews will generally be conducted following practice. However, other arrangements can be made by contacting UGA Sports Communications. Media desiring to conduct interviews over the phone should make arrangements through the Sports Communications office as well. These will be conducted according to Coach Holeman’s and the players’ availability, usually following practice. Photography & Video Only accredited photographers and videographers have permission to shoot on the sidelines. All photographers wishing to shoot at practice or at games must check in with UGA Sports Communications before going onto the field. To shoot practice, please call or email Kate Copp. On game days, photographers must either call, email, or check in with UGA Sports Communications in the press box before they will be allowed onto the field. Gameday Media Services All media personnel and photographers are invited to work in the press box located atop the stadium grandstands (credentials are not required). The press box is equipped with wireless and hard-wired high-speed internet connections as well as two telephone lines, all of which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Post-Game Interviews Media in the press box area will be surveyed with approximately two minutes left in the game to determine which players and coaches are requested for post-game interviews. All interviews will be conducted on the field unless otherwise specified, and will be arranged by UGA Sports Communications. Social Media Stay connected to the Georgia soccer team on Facebook (Facebook.com/ UGAWomensSoccer) and on Twitter (@UGAWomensSoccer) for updates throughout the season. season preview
Q&A with head coach steve holeman How important was the game experience gained by your freshman class last season? I think it was extremely important. Our freshman group played a big role in our success last fall and I think they’ll play an important role in what we do again this season. There is no substitution for game experience. The one thing a rookie player can’t have is collegiate game experience so returners with that experience will always have an edge. Our sophomores will play a big role in what we do this fall. How do you go about preparing this year’s young team for the upcoming season? It starts from day one. We start with a fitness test and kind of put them into some duels right away. We want to integrate them as quickly as possible. This is kind of an unusual year in that we have two exhibition games before our season opener, so that will benefit us greatly in getting our newcomers game experience. Most of the freshmen have also been here since July so they’ve gotten used to the level of play. Our job now is to integrate them into our system and help them make the adjustment. What does new assistant coach Stefani Workman bring to the team? Her primary role will be working with our keepers. She has an incredible background as a player and coach, has coached at many levels, and has worked with some of the top youth players in the country. She’s more than just a keeper coach. She came here having been a head coach at the NCAA Division II level so her knowledge of being a head coach and working with an entire team will benefit us greatly. She’s already made a positive impact on our team. What can you say about the determination of Laura Eddy as she keeps fighting back from injury? She is amazing. It’s hard to describe what she’s gone through and what she’s still been able to accomplish. The positive attitude she has had throughout the process is rare. Going through an ACL injury is a traumatic experience, one that a lot of athletes can attest to, but it’s very rare to have it happen three times. She unfortunately is one of those but she’s determined, she’s motivated, and you would never know from her positive outlook that that’s happened to her. She can’t wait to get back for this season. The doctors initially told her she would never play again so she is ready to get back and prove them wrong. After a standout freshman season, what do you expect from Marion Crowder this fall? She is coming off an ACL injury as well but is determined and motivated. She’s worked incredibly hard over the last six months to recover and it’s really just a matter of time until she gets back. She came in last year and was phenomenal as a freshman. I think she is an impact player and a game changer and we’ll be hoping for even more from her this year. How do you go about replacing leaders like Torri, Nikki, Nicole and Madeline from last year’s senior class? I don’t know that you replace leaders like that, but we have players who are ready to step up and fill the gaps that they’ve left behind. We have two great captains in Laura Eddy and Carli Shultis who, as sixth and fifth year seniors, have a lot of experience. They are two people who lead by example and who lead vocally. They have a lot of respect from all their teammates.
Three of your incoming freshmen are internationals, what does this bring to the team? They may come from different cultures and backgrounds but we all share the game of soccer in common. They are internationals in that they’ve played international soccer against other countries so they bring a lot of experience to the table. They’ve represented their countries at the highest levels. That involvement kind of separates them from your average freshman in that they have experience playing against some of the best players in the world. That will certainly come in handy when the season kicks off. What expectations and goals do you guys have as a team this season? Our expectation is to compete for an SEC title. Women’s soccer is just like every other sport in the conference in that it’s extremely competitive. We’re one of the best soccer conferences in the country and we have a lot of quality teams in our league who have a legitimate shot at the SEC title. Georgia is certainly one of those teams and we just missed out on making the NCAA tournament last season. We felt like we should have been in the tournament, so this year we have a little chip on our shoulder and feel that we have something to prove.

Steve Holeman Head Coach Fifth Season at Georgia • 21st Overall Wake Forest 1990 Career Record: 208-156-40 (0.564) Steve Holeman made his debut as the head coach of Georgia soccer for the 2010 season. Holeman came to Athens after spending the previous 15 seasons as the head coach at Ole Miss. The dean of SEC soccer coaches, Holeman is the fourth head coach at Georgia since the program’s inception in 1995, and enters his fifth season at the helm in 2014. The 2010 season saw Georgia compile a record of 11-6-4 (5-3-3 SEC) while reaching the SEC Championships semifinals for the third time in four seasons. Four Bulldogs received All-SEC honors under Holeman’s direction, while the team garnered its eighth consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA in his first year in Athens. In 2011, Holeman led the Bulldogs back to the NCAA Tournament, the program’s eighth alltime appearance, with a regular-season record of 12-5-2 (6-3-2). Georgia reached the NCAA second round for the sixth time overall, falling 3-1 to Duke in Durham, N.C., a place the Blue Devils have never lost in tournament time, to end with a record of 13-7-2. The trip was Holeman’s first at Georgia and his fifth overall. Following a 7-11-2 campaign in 2012, as the program dealt with injuries to several key players, Holeman’s 2013 squad finished 12-7-1 and reached the SEC quarterfinals. He nowowns a career record of 208-156-40 (.564). Holeman’s career began by starting the women’s soccer program at Auburn in 1993, before making the move to Oxford, Miss., where he began the soccer program for the Rebels in 1995. In addition to the four NCAA Tournament appearances under his direction, Ole Miss won three SEC Western Division titles and made an appearance in the SEC Tournament Finals in 1999. The four NCAA Tournament appearances (2002, 2003, 2005, 2009) included a trip to the second round in 2003, when the Rebels defeated the Texas Longhorns. In 2005, Holeman led the Rebels to a 14-5-2 record, including an 8-1-2 mark in league play. He was honored by Soccer Buzz as the 2005 Central Region Coach of the Year runner-up following that season. His 20 completed seasons in the conference makes him the longest-tenured active SEC women’s soccer coach. Holeman produced 29 All-SEC selections for the Rebels, and had at least one all-league player every year since 1996. Under Holeman, Ole Miss players were among the nation’s elite in the classroom with eight Academic/Scholar All-America honorees and 33 Academic All-Region selections.Over his last five seasons in Oxford, the Rebels went 19-1-5 against SEC West foes. At Auburn, Holeman put together the Tigers’ first-ever women’s soccer program in only six weeks and led the team to winning record at 7-6-3 in its inaugural campaign. Holeman has served on the staff at the Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He was head coach of the South Region team at the U.S. Soccer Festival in 2001-02, and guided them to a gold medal finish at the 2001 event in Chicago. Holeman, who holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “A” coaching license, began his coaching career while still a student-athlete on the men’s soccer team at Wake Forest University.
In 1991, Holeman guided the Huntsville (Ala.) Under-17 boys select team to the Alabama state championship. From 1992-94, he served as coach of the Auburn men’s club team. At the same time he was beginning his coaching career, Holeman also played soccer at Wake Forest. A fouryear letterman at midfield, he helped lead the Demon Deacons to the NCAA Tournament in 1988, 1989 and 1990. In 1989, he was a member of the Wake Forest squad that clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round. During that 1989 season, Wake Forest was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation. Holeman played professional soccer as a member of the Montgomery Capitals, a semi-pro team based in Montgomery, Ala., in 1993 and 1994. He also played on the Alabama Men’s All-Star Indoor Team in 1992. His knowledge and respect throughout college soccer earned him the position of chairman for the NCAA men’s and women’s soccer rules committee, a position he held in 2004-05. A native of West Long Branch, N.J., Holeman graduated from Wake Forest University in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in health and sports science. In 1993, he received his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Auburn, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout his graduate studies. Holeman has also successfully completed coursework toward a doctorate degree in exercise physiology. He was named the Georgia head coach on April 16, 2010. Born Dec. 21, 1967, Holeman is married to the former Julie Newton of Goodman, Miss., and they have one daughter, Anna Mae, and one son, Robert (Bo) Stephen.

Dan Blank Associate Head Coach Fifth Season Bethany College 1991
Dan Blank was promoted to associate head coach of the Georgia soccer team in December of 2011 after spending the 2010 and 2011 seasons as the team’s assistant coach under Steve Holeman. Blank’s first season with Georgia soccer was 2010, as he joined Holeman in Athens following three seasons as an assistant at Ole Miss. Blank was previously a volunteer coach for the Rebels in 2007 and 2008, before he was promoted to a full-time assistant in 2009. In his first year in charge of the Ole Miss defense, Blank helped lead the Rebels to the best goals-against average in the SEC. On that note, Blank became the first coach in SEC history to lead his defense to the best goalsagainst average in consecutive years at different universities in 2010. In 2009 with the Rebels, Blank’s defense put up a conference-best 0.68 GAA in SEC games. A year later at UGA, Blank led the Bulldogs to a GAA of 0.60 in league games to top the SEC. Guiding the Georgia defenders, Blank helped the Bulldog backs post a 0.85 goals against average overall that year, allowing just 19 goals all season and coming away with nine shutouts on the year. Defenders Rebekah Perry and Torri Allen were named second-team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman, respectively, under Blank’s leadership in 2010. In 2011, Blank’s back-four put up a goals against average of 1.20 and recorded six shutouts, and in both 2012 and 2013, they posted a 1.10 GAA. Also in 2013, Blank’s back line was instrumental in securing the second-longest shutout streak in school history at 652:37. The team did not allow a goal in the run of play until the 11th game of the season. Blank boasts a wealth of coaching experience and success at many levels of soccer. Prior to joining the Rebel staff in 2007, he spent nine years as the head women’s coach at Embry-Riddle University after building the program from scratch in 1998. A three-time Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year and NAIA Region 14 Coach of the Year, Blank compiled a 98-61-8 record and guided the Eagles to three conference titles, three NAIA Region XIV titles, and three NAIA national tournament appearances. Before his time at Embry-Riddle, Blank spent three seasons as head coach of the nationally ranked Brewton-Parker College women’s soccer program, where he amassed a 47-13-3 record. He led the Barons to two NAIA tournament berths and three league titles, earning Georgia Athletic Conference Coach of the Year plaudits each season. The Barons were ranked as high as fourth nationally all three years. Prior to his tenure at Brewton-Parker, Blank served for three years as assistant coach for Wheeling Jesuit College, helping that program to three national tournament berths as well as three regional and district titles. Blank has also had success on the semi-pro level, having served as an assistant coach and assistant general manager for the USL W-League’s Atlanta Classics from 1997-98 and head coach of the Jacksonville Jade in 2001 and 2002, leading that franchise to its first ever winning record. Blank has helped produce more than 25 collegiate All-Americans and numerous NAIA Scholar-Athletes and Academic All-America picks throughout his career. He holds a USSF “A” License and an advanced national diploma from the NSCAA. Blank played his collegiate soccer at Bethany College (W. Va.), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1991. At Bethany, he played under coaching legend Graham Ramsay and helped the Bison to four straight NCAA Division III Tournament berths. Blank resides in Athens with his wife, Beth, and their daughter, Izzy.
