LOCATION: MINNEAPOLIS, MN

Social isolation is a behavioral epidemic that has become prevalent in younger generations within the last decade. There are significant psychological deficits associated with loneliness, including increased risk for depression and anxiety, decreased physiological health, and overall lower well-being. On another hand, workplace flexibility, especially location flexibility, is increasingly desirable among American workers, particularly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. These two issues led to the creation of Revamp. Revamp is located in downtown Minneapolis because of the city’s large beer culture and established, walkable downtown area. The warehouse district is also located near many different types of corporations, to encourage interdisciplinary socialization between users. The four key goals for this project were acoustics, workplace flexibility, enhancing socialization, and design of a third place. The space plan was designed to create different work modalities and an acoustic privacy gradient, which improves workplace flexibility.

PLAN NORTH TRUE NORTH

Revamp is a 6,550 sf coworking space with a 4,500 sf microbrewery attached. The collaboration areas feature various furniture arrangements to allow for maximal flexibility, allowing users to select which area they would like to work. By limiting the amount of walls in this space there is a sensation of openness that allows users to look across the space and interact with users throughout. The private areas, located plan north, are intentionally smaller to encourage users to utilize the open collaboration areas and socialize, while drinking a beer or two. The beer tap wall, located in the center of the collaboration area, plan south, was positioned to enhance socialization and conversation through the water cooler effect.

To create an organizational layout that refelcts the historic modernism of the art deco style, we chose the fan motif as the basis for our floor plan. The central curve creates a simple, legible path of circulation between the three main zones of the first floor -- the restaurant, hotel lobby, and coworking space. This central zone also separates introductory and private spaces that are fromed by the shape of the curve. We also designed interior architectural elements and spaces to follow the curve, further emphasizing the fan shape and motif. Our team divided the spaces to design, with consistent communication to ensure we were all in agreement with the design decisions made. I was primarily responsible for the overall space planning of the project, and specifically the coworking and 2nd floor during design development.
