POUVA START CAMERA Made in 1956 by Karl Pouva in Freital, near Dresden former East Germany its a Bakelite plastic medium format camera with features much like those of contemporary smart Bakelite cameras: two apertures, modes time and instant (1/30 sec.), screw tube and simple lens and is quite a well known “cult” camera with fans who are into lomography and such. It was a rather inexpensive camera for the time and easy to use for beginners totally suggest snapping one up if you do ever get your hands on one!

PIN CUSHION So you’ve been an extreme pin collector for quite some time or only just discovered these little pieces of metal, pin collecting is rather addictive and somewhat entertaining… They can gain quite a lot of attention and also aid as a cheesy pick up line! You can find super cheap ones or insanely expensive ones but next time you see one somewhere perhaps looking into its history a little more might be worth the time, Eventually scoring a gem of a pin for your collection is a great feeling. It’s that uniqueness, where you found it or who gave it to you is where the true value is.

VELCRO’S BACK! I have a Velcro wallet, and I’m not ashamed of it… A lot of people seem to think there’s an age limit on velcro wallets, I don’t think that’s true some people laugh, some people stare. One thing i do know is it lets everyone in the room know you mean business. When a guy tears open a velcro wallet, people listen. Now that’s a man with a wallet right there. That’s a man who is about to engage in some big spending. No man is complete without a velcro wallet.

PIPE DREAMS For smoking with style, try a wooden pipe. This apparatus feels like it takes you back years and is an art in itself far superior to the regular cigarette or even cigars The material and shape of a pipe has a profound influence upon the aesthetic of the smoke. The pipe itself is commonly made from wood, briar, meerschaum, corncob or clay. Today, men who smoke a pipe are taking part in a manly ritual that stretches back to the dawn of time and has continued unbroken to the present.

SPARKS OF TIME Rare and unique vintage lighters and collectibles are hard to come by sometimes and when you do find one most of the time they aren’t even that expense, its a perfect novelty gift even if the person don’t smoke. Most of the old lighters are refillable which is a bonus and you know people will ask when you pull out a vintage lighter, what’s its story? where did it come from? and one other thing no one will take it, someone will always know its yours.

FLENSBURGER PILLS Classic pilsener from Flensburg Germany golden in colour, Develops bitterness along the way with hints of sweetness. Today it is still mainly held by the founder families Petersen and Dethleffsen. Before modern refrigeration, the brewery used to chop blocks of ice from frozen lakes in the winter and bring the blocks back to the brewery to keep their underground storage facilities cool in summer. The brewery is still operating its own water well, which is supplied by an underground vein of very old Ice Age melting water coming from Scandinavia.

PRESSING ISSUE Letterpress printing is a form of text and image using a press with a printing press and movable type, in which a reversed, raised area is inked and then pressed into paper to obtain a positive right reading image. It remained in wide use for printing books and other uses until the second half of the 20th century. The is a hell of a lot of buzz about this style of design with small boutiques and studios leading a revival of this dying art. Perhaps the next time you decide to get something printed, think about these little letters and what they could achieve for you!

VINTAGE VEW-FINDING Much like the old school View-Master these little viewing portals have had a long history, dating back to the late 1930’s. I actually didn’t even know these were something to look through thinking they were just plain old key chains, to my surprise its another world in there! Now marketed to children, the viewfinders were originally heavily oriented toward adults, and included much educational and tourism content. You defiantly get a kick out of these things or some kind of nostalgic feeling.

SUMMER SOCKS So you want a bit of colour in your life? These insanely bight 3 pack socks from American Apparel are right up your alley, A sporty sock that are perfect for everyday use, cotton blend and a soft knit material feel means you don’t get those epic sock strangle marks, totally fits in with summers crazy loud vibe, you obviously know what’s next, fun times ahead for your feet and that’s for sure.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [17]

FRENCH SKATE CINEMA: YOAN TAILLANDIER INTERVIEW Interviewed by Brett Randall Answed by Yoan Taillandier corrected by Vivien Feil.

Left: Yoan in the zone Backside Nosegrind, shot by Guillaume Anselin Right: Super 8 Frame grabs from Yoan’s first film Minuit shot while in Japan. .

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [18]

1. SO YOAN, YOU GREW UP IN BORDEAUX, FRANCE, GIVE US A LITTLE LOWDOWN ON THE CITY AND WHAT ITS LIKE TO GROW UP THERE.

Zoo york Mixtape 1 - Maybe the first video I saw, Real street spirit.

I’m Yoan Taillandier i’m 25 year old and I was born in Bordeaux, in the southern part of France, Bordeaux is a small and mellow city. The city has a strong architectural past. Almost all building have sculpted fronts, the downtown area has been changing in the past few years because of the tramway construction works, so there has been a lot of new spots popping up.

Overground broadcasting & Dialogue Between Insiders: creative and refreshing.

Alien Workshop Photosynthesis & Mosaic: Aesthetic influence.

When we discovered Japanese skateboarding with my friends it just came as a breath of fresh air. It was refreshing to see that there’s shades in skateboarding. And to be present at the Tokyo premiere of ‘Overground’ was also a chapter in my skateboard history.

2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SKATEBOARDING FOR? I started skating around 1998 after seeing the World Industries demo at the main spot near my house. It was crowded and I got excited to see that many skaters that day. 4. WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE VIDEOS AND HOW THEY CHANGED THE WAY YOU LOOKED AT SKATEBOARDING? Actually when I got the internet I tried to watch as many videos as I could to make my skate culture, but we all come back to our classic. There are a few special brands or style that I keep in mind…

These videos are also important to me: ftc’s vids, Stereo’s vids, Transworld vids, On video Tantrum, Fit, Trilogy, Non fiction, Collage, La County, Closure, Eastern exposure and there is many more... 5. HOW DID YOU GET INTO FILMING AND WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT IT WAS YOUR PASSION? I started filming with my friends and our little camera. It was fun and motivating. After a few broken cameras I decide to buy a VX camera. And I think from there my filming took an another direction. I have always been into movies, photography and graphic design. I like all that stuff. It speaks to my mind.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [19]

7. STYLE PLAYS A BIG PART IN SKATEBOARDING, HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE STYLE YOURSELF? If I try to put it into a short sentence: style is the expression of body language. For me style represent the way you look at things, what can you read or see trough shapes. it’s like your imagination speaking. And the thing I like about style is that nobody has the same style. It’s unique to every person and that’s the interesting part of it. We’re now in a period of globalization and uniformisation, but I believe it is the wrong path. Our strength lies in the world diversity. All the differences make our power. 8. WHO WOULD BE THE MOST INFLUENTIAL TO YOU IN SKATEBOARDING AND WHY? It’s a difficult question... I think I’m not influenced by only one person. My inspiration comes from various sources. I like to take little bits of a lot of things and put them together to create something new. I don’t want to

focus on one thing very specific to look up as my main influence because it’s too restrictive. I take my influences from a lot of difference things outside of skateboarding: I go the public library to check books, listen to music, rent movies… 9. YOU HAVE TRAVELLED A LOT WITH FILMMAKING, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES SO FAR AND SOME YOU WOULD LIKE TO VISIT IN THE FUTURE? I would like to go visit a part of my family that’s in Guadaloupe (Caraibean island) and try to skate around Porto Rico… I definitely want to go back to Japan, I would like to visit Australia as well. Perth scene seems to be amazing I really like Josh Robert’s videos! for skateboarding I went to sf and Japan. But I also would like to travel to discover the world go in as much country as I can because I find it interesting but I just need money to do that I would like to go everywhere... I think travelling is the most beautiful thing humans can do. \Wherever you go you just live, experience and it will make you bigger.

Left: Hunting for spots around japan, a couple of examples right here. Right: Skateboard Party Japan style from Yoan’s recent trip.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [20]

10. YOUR CURRENTLY WORKING ON HILL STREET BLUES 2 AT THE MOMENT, HOW DOES THIS COMPARE TO OTHER FILMS YOU HAVE MADE - FLOW AND VIBE WISE? Hsb2 is going to be released soon!! It is a different style of skating from what I’m doing with Minuit. Hsb2 is more based on cruising and downhills skating. I think it just represents the simplicity in skateboarding and the basic elements of crusing and going fast which are at the essence of skateboarding. I try to show that it can be very rewarding to experience life in the city by cruising with friends in downhills. I also tried to get our friends involved in the project. People that are skating with us like Ben gore and Isaac Mc Kay Randozzi. I thought it could be cool to mix their photos with some of my super 8 and make a mix of everyone’s point of view to show that friendly spirit. It was very cool and I want to thank them for being a part of that project. Hope you will like Hill Street Blues Vol.2! :) 11. WHERE DO YOU THINK SKATEBOARDING IS HEADING IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS AND WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IT?

and compare it to today’s hip hop: it’s just the opposite of what it was back in the days… Now there is the Berrics, Street league, etc. It’s like Skateboarding mass media. They are just taking possession of the kids’ brains to make them think as skateboarding consumers. It became just another market rather than a subculture. Kids are taught how to act to be better than their friends and how to become professionals. The fun part of skateboarding is not the main focus anymore. I believe skateboarding is primary made to have fun with your friends and to be free to use it however you want to... 12. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR YOURSELF? WHAT’S YOUR NEXT PROJECTS? I’m planing on making another Minuit dvd. I’m probably going to start filming for it next year. I want to express as good as I can my vision of skateboarding. I really want to come back to Japan to capture that particular energy again. Japan is a beautiful country and every trip is a life changing experience. 13. FAMOUS LAST WORDS.

I’m pretty sure that it’s going to go to the Olympics but I don’t care because the commercial part has already taken possession of skateboarding. It’s not a new thing… I think a good examples is hip hop. Watch “Black Moon - How Many Mc’s”

Life is short and we just have to enjoy it as much as we can with our skateboard.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [21]

RUSHY RUSH & SARAH CHARLOT TE BLOCH X JUST STUDIO INTERVIEW

PRETTY NICE #1

Left: A fotodocumentary of Rush and Sarah always without faces.

INTERVIEW [22]

Right: Rushy’s one of a kind of wonder lamps and money bags & Sarah’s ninja style parkour outfits.

HISTORY / STORY BEHIND THE NAME

WHATS A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU?

RUSH: I was feeling uninspired and wanted to stop art all together, but I couldn’t. I needed a sign, a way of knowing I was to continue so I asked the universe and I was presented with an opportunity from the creative manager of the Zeil Gallery to create a space, he knew about my past history and willing to try something new. We wanted to recreate a new look, an urbanmodern styled space, a mixture of elegance and improvement it was almost like should we actually go ahead with this, like official exposure of the creative process in public? But it worked in our favour. The name process was short in choosing before we had the space we were operating from a backyard and need a word that could be appropriate for the new space, something that flowed, something original. A studio in as a shop front is quite hard to present as a whole, the name had to reflect a shop but also a creative project space, it was a space looking for constant change - positive influence, acting and reacting creating a chain reaction around us. In Germany the word “Just” means now, surprising or in the moment, not only in German just transcribes in every language, it had the positive vibe we were after… just like that Michael Jackson song ‘Just another part of me’.

RUSH: We open the store at 10.am, organize our individual work space, start to work on our current and future projects, The real work or hustle / creative lifestyle is constant, we are working all the time to stay on the ball as the space is open till 8.pm. Its great to invite clients here as opposed to the previous backyard studio, it has more of a private yet public feel to it, its kinda like a adventure for the client and i guess we would be taking advantage of every creative moment anywhere and everywhere!

HOW LONG HAVE HAD THE SPACE - JUST RUSH: The space was officially opened on the 17th of December 2011.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOUR PASSION FOR BEING CREATIVE? RUSH: Coming from a multicultural family with a background in art, it was flowing through my veins it was only natural for me and not hard to bring to the surface. I was always thinking different, came up with crazy ideas. SARAH: From a young age i was creative, I began to study art and fashion, I was always striving to be different, I wanted to specialize in fashion with an art background, I still always love to draw, I’m into photography and am constantly creating.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [23]

Left: Necklaces, Kicks and flavoursome refreshments. Right: Rushy’s / Sarahs work area, Speciality printed T-shirts and parkour outfits.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [24]

WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION? RUSH: Fashion, room accessories, men and women’s accessories and the basics. The idea behind it is pretty much, what should I do today? what can i invent? The inspiration grows bigger by itself, everyday!

SARAH: I like to work with garments i can remix in a way that I can recreate into a timeless/classic piece, some mediums I work with are wool, perforated mesh, cotton, natural materials, elastic, linen, I like to use the highest quality of goods to create garments, but I guess any material is possible! QUOTE

SARAH: Minimal vibes, unique and one off items, seeking for innovation, individual choice, custom expression, fashion trends, accessories, exclusive things, less is more / more is less.

RUSH: I’m a mix of Rocky, John McClain, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, a Shaolin Monk, Indiana Jones Huckleberry Fin and Jim Hawkins with much influence of my family roots, a one of a kind artist/creator.

THE MOST POPULAR ITEM YOU STOCK? SARAH: Won´t answer that. RUSH: My original wonder lamps and wallets. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE? SARAH: Parkour pants or outfits I create. WHAT ARE SOME TECHNIQUES OR MEDIUMS YOU USE? RUSH: Original techniques I’ve developed over time and experience, Some techniques I use may look easy but are hard for anyone to recreate, it took me over 1 year to get my technique to a level I was happy with. I also work with mediums like prints, patterns, paper, trash, card, material and various other things that work for me oh and of course pencil and paper for the initial sketches and planning for the work.

RUSH: Intercity Hopper, Jumping internationally, produce my own rap e.p in Berlin by that time I’ll be done with lamps and wallets. I’ll also be searching for a new character maybe I’ll be on Jupiter? SARAH: Somewhere bigger, move around, see new places. I’d hope to have an extended shop just for my fashion side of things.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [25]

CHRIS (SIMPSON’S ARTIST) XOX INTERVIEW

Left: Houston we have got a problem because the first ever man to have a walk on the moon neil amrstrongs has died. Right: Look who it is because it is the girls that everyone wants to be even dads and they are called the spice girls.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [26]

SO, CHRIS (SIMPSON’S ARTIST) WHY CHOOSE THE SIMPSON’S TO DRAW? DO YOU LIKE ANY OTHER CARTOONS AT ALL? Since i was dead small i have always had a draw of all of the people from on The Simpson’s and it is what made me start drawing pictures so if it was not for The Simpson’s then i don’t think that i would have started drawing and i would probably just have died when i was a little boy. YOU ARE QUITE A ONLINE PHENOMENON YET REMAIN RATHER ELUSIVE, PERHAPS YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOURSELF A LITTLE? I am just me because no one else will be me so i think that i am the best person to be me. YOUR ART IS VERY DETAILED, IT MUST TAKE A LONG TIME TO CREATE JUST ONE PICTURE? TELL ME THE PROCESS AND METAL PREPARATION YOU MUST GO THROUGH TO CREATE A MASTERPIECE? When i am starting to do a new picture i always just think inside of my head what the person or animal looks like and then i make my thoughts go inside of

my hand and then i make my hand move and then it just comes to life and a lady said to me one time before when she was having a watch of me drawing a picture when i was in a cafe and she said that having a watch of me draw was like watching a play. WHEN YOU DECIDE TO DRAW SOMEONE WHO ISN’T FROM THE SIMPSON’S HOW WOULD YOU DECIDE WHO TO DRAW NEXT? I just draw what i feel like having a draw of because i think that it is important to have a draw of what you want to draw and i think that a artist is only truly happy when they are drawing something they truly wish to draw and i don’t think a artist will become truly successful unless they draw their true wish and a artist can draw pictures of things that they don’t want to have a draw of and have lots of money and not be truly happy inside of my head but i don’t think they should be called a artist because a artist to me is someone that has a draw of pictures that they want to have a draw of and be happy and if lots of money comes to them then that is just a extra treat.

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [27]

Left: Here he comes it is stephen hawkins and he is so futuristic and quite like a car film as well. Right: It is the best day ever because the queen is 100 years old exactly today and everyone loves the queen even beggars and blind people.

YOU DONT SEEM TO TALK ABOUT ANY FRIENDS MUCH, WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOUR BEST FRIEND IS YOUR MUM?

that it is just a trick so make sure you act like you have got a bone infection loads and make your body really soft as well like your bones are really infected.

I think that every persons best friend is their mum because it is your mum

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? AND WHAT JOB

that has cared for you since you was just a seed and so no other person in all of the world and all of the planets can have a connection with you the way a mum does and when i see people drift apart from their mum it makes me sad but it also makes me thankful that i am so close to my mum and she is really good at giving me lifts as well when i need a lift to town.

DID YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU BECAME A DEAD PROPER ARTIST?

ON THAT NOTE, YOU SEEM TO PLAY A LOT OF TRICKS ON YOUR MUM, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TRICK AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO HER ON APRIL FOOLS DAY? My best trick is probably just my bone infection trick that i do all of the time and it is dead easy but it is dead effective and all that you do is just go on to the floor or the ground and you just lay there completely still and then when a man or a lady or a boy comes over to you and says are you ok what is wrong with you then you just say in a really weak voice that you have got a bone infection and then they will carry you back to your house but it is important to try and not to laugh when they are carrying you because then they will know

I have always wanted to be a artist since i was dead small and i think that if you want to be something so much then the only thing that can stop you from becoming that thing is yourself and so many people say that it is too hard to become a popular artist and i think that is just not true because if you believe in yourself and you work hard like i gone and done then there is nothing stopping you apart from the little thoughts inside of your head that say you cant do something so it is important to be positive and not focus on the things that you cant do for yourself but focus on the things that you can achieve for yourself. DO YOU ONLY SHOP AT TESCO OR DO YOU HAVE OTHER FAVOURITE STORES THAT YOU LIKE TO FREQUENT? Just like tescos the best because it has got everything that anyone could ever dream of and it is a magical place

PRETTY NICE #1 INTERVIEW [28]

DID YOU OR DO YOU OWN ANY PETS? IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY ANIMAL IN THE WORLD AS A PET WHAT WOULD IT BE? I have got a baby mole called tired eyes and he is so sweet aw i love him so much and he has got light blue eyes and he always screams when i go in to a room that he is in because he loves me so much and he loves it when i put him inside of one of my socks and i do a swing of him all around my living room and he screams so much because he loves me doing it for him as well and i just love him so much because he is like my son.

clapping when i was singing as well and i love going on the train to my uncle davids house because it is exciting going to other places because it is other places that hold other faces and it is other faces that hold the keys to other worlds even if the train you took only went to manchester and that is a beautiful thing. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR CHRIS (SIMPSON’S ARTIST)? I think that the future holds whatever i wish it to.

HAVE YOU EVER TRAVELLED BEFORE? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO VISIT? AND IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

FINALLY, DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM? Just be you because no one else will be.

I have gone to my uncle davids house on a train to manchester loads and it is dead good because i always sing for the whole of the way there and a lady was

I travel a lot with work some favourite places were Istanbul for (Genc Klasikciler Festivali), London (Footlocker/ Converse) and Frankfurt (BRIGHT Skateboarding Tradeshow for Puma). WHY ARE YOU IN BERLIN? It was because of the need for a change of environment. I wanted to experience something new. It’s a relaxed city so I decided to give it a try. I finished school and the moment was right. Its a city in which you can always find what you are looking for...
