Brett Shifflett

As a first generation college student, I have been blessed with the opportunity to pursue my Bachelor of Science in architecture at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. As a kid, I grew up with a number of friends and family members involved in the field of construction, this led to my intense interest involved with the creating of living spaces and understanding design. I have worked for a local contractor in Virginia, Mid-Atlantic Home Improvement, on a number of small and large scale projects as well as a previous architectural internship with Overland Partners in San Antonio, Texas where I was able to further test and enhance my skills as a designer. I hope to take the skills I have learned from all of my past experiences and education and apply them to all of my future work. I am constantly looking for new opportunities to strengthen my skills and test my knowledge. I am extremely grateful to pursue a career in a field I love and intend to show this through my portfolio. Here I have compiled a number of projects from design studios, structural design and professional experiences which proved to be successful and worthy of note.

Understanding Design Looking at well known buildings like Farnsworth, Wolf House and Villa Muller, we were asked to replicate their designs and analyze how they work. After understanding their design and being given a conceptual site, a design was developed using a free plan system. Half way through the project we were paired with our neighbors to combine our sites and share a common amenity such as a swimming pool. Finalizing a dual site, the buildings were to compliment the other and effectively implement the shared program.

Pool to Sky Focusing on a very complex site, this sports complex looks to introduce a new facility with access to three different swimming areas, including an Olympic sized swimming area placed on the third floor. This pool is used to open to the sky with an entirely glass ceiling giving way to a beautiful, serene atmosphere for all users. With the diving pool outside and the exercise pool below, the building is divided into a public and private sector allowing for spaces to be separated and differentiate their uses.

Slots and Stacks Introducing a library as a thin slot between two existing structures in the Chinatown district, this design uses the division of spaces and their lighting to help direct design choices and spaces. All public spaces were pushed to the more public facade, in turn pushing the stacks to the more private sector of the building. In section, it is to be understood how light is used to invite people to use all public amenities paired with a single window angled in direct view of the Jan Hancock tower.

Behind the Scenes A new approach to the theater, this design disregards the practice of keeping the theater as a single component and is instead, broken into two. Proposing a dual stage, the performers would be facing an audience from the interior and exterior; green seating allowing for a wide range of plays for both a private and public audience. However, instead of hiding the backstage, they are seen climbing through the glass box directly adjacent to the main stage, thus allowing for the audience to see the magic behind the scenes.

Growing Berlin Introducing an organic form into a very hard environment allowed for a lot of unique and interesting opportunities for my studio in Berlin. Mixing residential apartments with gardening programs, this design looks at bringing nature into the spaces. Using a curved facade system, the greenhouses receive an ample amount of sunlight slowly shifting into smaller less drastic double height terraces for all apartments as well as a circular staircase in the center dividing the two sections and preserving a preexisting tree on site.

Favelas 2.0 Focusing on social housing and needs, this project looks at giving shape and definition to the Brazilian favelas. As Brazil stands now, the favelas are to simply be demolished and relocated, but when in Brazil you understand the favelas add to the beauty and character to the country, can simply need direction not demolition. With a focus on sustainable modular units, this new building system and provide housing, education, recreation and create a whole new look for the Brazilian community scheduled for destruction.

SoWa Market A well known farmers market in Boston, the SoWa market, this structure looks to provide a completely open space for users. A very large and simplistic approach, introduces a suspended steel platform over head. With thick concrete columns on one side, stabilized deep underground, the platform is attached to the columns and suspended from steel cables above. Winning most impressive structure for our year, this floating platform would be a simplistic, but interesting approach for the SoWa design.

Watchtower Coming to understand balloon frame systems, the watchtower project is constructed to only represent the wooden framing necessary for construction. With less emphasis on design, this project was meant to be strictly structural. However, with very strict square footage limits and the ground floor giving way to a single staircase, the design is focused on obtaining the maximum amount of viewing space possible on the second floor. This allowed for a complete circuit around the stair, allowing for clear views in all directions.

Dragon Rapeux Another structural project, this wall section was focused solely on the use of a CMU block. With precise and intricate placement, theses square units are used to give a curved and waving wall system. In addition to the physical look, these seemingly solid units are stacked to allow for air and light to freely move from each side of the system which, in turn leads to the need for a waterproofing layer of columns and glass on the interior allowing for a complete, working system.

Ridgely Project A housing project in northern Dallas, TX, the Ridgely family began constructing their dream home as well as the design process for a large 40 car garage/showroom and guest house. Working under Overland Partners in San Antonio, I was able to aid in the design process as well as experience the process of having the project being built. Responsible for the 3D model and the majority of client presentations, I felt very much involved with this project. I was highly respected for my work and ideas even as a young designer.

Madison Residence Having the unique experience of working for a local contractor in Virginia, I had the opportunity to working on a family residence from start up to move in day. A truly eye opening experience into the world of construction that we, as designers, rely so heavily upon, it was great to go and see what it is like to be on the other end of the design process and analyze how the designs really come together. This sequence of photos allows you to walk through the process I got to experience over my two summers of work.
