LETTER FROM THE EDITOR ITS THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! TOURNEY TIME! We have all expereinced the tournament at some point in our lives, whether it was to play basketball, watch as fans, cheer at the games, play in the band, or get out of the house for something fun to do in the Bangor Area.

For years, the Bangor Auditorium has set the standards for February Vacation and time and time agian, people flock from all over Maine just to watch a week's worth of high school basketball and check out the upcoming talent!

I played years ago for Stearns High School, and that was probably one of the biggest adrenaline rushes you could imagine! The bus ride, the game prep, and then running out onto the hardwood floor, fans a blaze! It really is a special moment in a high schooler's career.

We were very pleased to be a local and a large sponsor for the Maine Principal's Assocation, and we look forward to working with them on future projects! It's very exciting to be on the 'media' side of things rather than playing for a change!

1.) How long been working for the MPA STARTED WORKING MPA APRIL 1, 2001, 14 YEARS 2.) Did you ever play and if so what sport?

I played baseball basketball high school, then continued to play basketball at UMPI. I also coached for 6 years and officiated for 20 years 3.) What is your favorite memory of the tournament in Penobscot County?

Wow, I think my favorite part of the tournament is I get to see people I won’t get to see for another 50 weeks…so I create memories with friends who I’ve known for 45-50 years.

4.) Why do you think the tournament is such a huge success in the Bangor Area?

Well I think for Eastern Maine, particularly for the small rural towns, the high schools and the winner of their basketball teams are the entertainment, and when the team is fortunate enough to make it down here to play, both communities turn out to cheer on the kids. With respect to the other auditoriums, the Cross Insurance Center gains more people because there aren’t as many choices around here (as far as things to do/attend like somewhere in Portland). It makes people connect to their local high school.

5.) How much revenue does the tourney usually bring?

The basketball tournament, depending on weather, usually has an annual income before expenses usually between 600-700k, and then we have 350-4k of expenses, renting facility, officials, etc.

Basketball is one of the 3-4 sports that brings more income for expenses, so the profit, if you will, off the basketball tournament, helps us run all the other sports that does not bring in an income. Without the tournament, we wouldn’t be able to fund swim, cross country, track, student council, national honor society, and all the things that help run an education for high school students. It draws the most attention because it is basketball and the state of Maine, but in the end it is the reason we are able to do the things we can do.

6.) How many people does it usually attract?

About 44,000 and that’s paid attendance, because the coaches teams are able to come in and watch other games, principles and athletic directors are asked to come monitor, and they don’t pay, so the 44,000, including state championship, was last year Bangor has 3 classes Augusta has 3 classes with 28,000 in attendence Portland only has 2 classes with 22,000

7.) What’s the craziest fan you’ve ever seen (dress wise) Ha-ha-ha, you know that’s hard to say, usually I really do enjoy watching the student sections, and most of the time as a group they are well behaved, but there will be times to have to speak to the kids.

I’m more likely to have my total attention on the floor, and I feel like we are all privileged to be here watching. And we have rules, have to wear shirts, and all those things; we have had to tell people to take their shirts off, or put shirts on. We don’t want the attention to go to the people in the stands; the show is on the court 8.) What do you like most about your association with this program?

I’m fortunate in that since we deal with all the high school athletics, but we are also the professional association that deals with all the k-12 principals, and we do 50-60 days of professional development, there will be 300 bills before the legislature that affects education, part of my job is to monitor those.

I’m over at the capital more than half my time, monitoring bills, so I think the variety of my job is what makes it enjoyable. You never feel like you’re down in a rut, I can move from principals to sports side I’m sure you’ve seen some pretty tough losses and emotions throughout the years…

I think often there are teams here that they didn’t come in as the favorite and feel fortunate and lucky and just try to play as long as they can, and win or lose, they are happy with the progress they made.

I think the teams that come here who are on top with only 1 or 2 loses in the season are the ones who take it harder the most…I think the kids take it a lot easier than the parents. That’s the hard part about a fan or a parent, you cheer so much and know your kids should win, but in the end you know they did their best!

08 HISTORY AMERICA

The Bangor Auditorium was a 5,948 seat multipurpose arena located in downtown Bangor, Maine.

It opened October 1, 1955 and was used for concerts (maximum capacity 6,800), sporting events, circus performances, political rallies, as well as trade shows with 16,000 square feet (1500 m²) of space. It shared the same complex as the Bangor Civic Center. For decades, it hosted the Maine Principals' Association basketball tournament each February, as well as the graduation ceremonies for Bangor High School in June. It also served as the home of the University of Maine Men's and Women's basketball teams for a few seasons until 1992. The V-shape style of the building gave it the look of giant wings and adds to the atmosphere. A statue of Paul Bunyan towers outside as a symbol of the city's prosperous history as a lumber port in the early-to-mid-19th century.

The auditorium and civic center shared its campus with Bass Park, home of the Bangor State Fair as well as Bangor Raceway, one of the oldest harness racing facilities in New England. Bangor Auditorium has hosted many major musical acts and has been a stop for World Wrestling Entertainment house shows for many years.

Over the course of a few few years, the city discussed significantly renovating or replacing the aging auditorium with a state-of-the-art venue. Poor ventilation and HVAC systems as well as substandard handicap accessibility have been cited as primary reasons for this.

On August 22, 2009, the city consulted with Sink Combs Dethlefs Architects and others to discuss the construction of a $51 million, 5,000 seat arena adjacent to the existing structure. Dick Durhost Continued Why Did They Tear It Down?

It was an old tired building, bathrooms were insufficient, there weren’t enough concession areas, leaks on the roof, boilers, water systems, and all of those things...it did have a mystique about it and a feeling and certain environment, and I think everyone will miss those memories, however when you walk into this place and when you watch a games like we had for the Eastern Maine finals last year, we had 4500 people in the stands, this facility wasn’t any quieter, and it also makes it cozier the way we have set up the media and band and cheerleaders.

And the seating is so much more comfortable and restrooms and concessions are just a short walk away!

I STARTED ATTENDING THERE AS A CHILD BACK IN 1961, AND MY PARENTS WOULD BRING US, SO MORE THAN 50 YEARS I ATTENDED GAMES THERE!

EVERY YEAR, FANS DRESS UP IN SUPPORT OF THEIR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL! I think the best part about the tournament is that there is always a feeling that I can associate with that time of year.

Whether it's the smells of the hot dogs and popcorn, or the sounds of the same announcers that echo acros the facility

and the live bands that bring a loyal tradition, the fans who chant back and forth, finally the competitive fire of everyone that steps onto the auditorium floor. The level of play rises and it truly is one of the best stages any young person

James’ thirty-six year career as a professional photographer started right after high school working for several local newspapers. Through college and a few years thereafter in Boston for United Press International (UPI) photographing editorial assignments as well as sports. For many years he shot the Boston Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins!

A highlight of his early career was covering the Celtics’ Championship starring Larry Bird.

In 1985, James left photo journalism and opened a stuido in downtown Boston where he worked for the next five years taking photos for catalogs and magazine advertisements for the likes of Talbots, Filene’s, PA Company, and many other clothing manufacturers. During this time, James shot personalities for both local and national TV stations, taking portraits of on air talent such as Tom Bergeron, Bette Midler, Sid Caesar, and Renee Russo among others.

In 1990, James shifted gears to work in fashion, commuting between New York and Miami for assignments.

James married in 1997 and shortly thereafter moved to Maine where he has been ever since. James has balanced work as a professional photographer shooting for banks, healthcare organizations, insurance providers, manufactures, biotech companies, non-profit and PR agencies across New England, with teaching photography at the college level.

James’ humor, lack of shyness, and ability to bring out the best in everyone puts the person of focus at ease, and enables him to achieve great images. His attention to detail from his days in fashion are ever present in how he handles assignments.
