Blacksmith’s Gastropub A

fter relocating from St. Elmo to Downtown and revamping from “bistro” to “gastropub,” Blacksmith’s still provides one of Chattanooga’s most unique dining experiences.

The menu features locally sourced ingredients combined to create fresh, contemporary takes on American classics and comfort food. Begin your meal with the chicken or beef sliders, or perhaps their wing-style chicken drumsticks, available with your choice of three sauces.

Fried green tomatoes are another favorite here, stacked with pimento cheese and black bean and chipotle sauces.

The burgers at Blacksmith’s are worth a visit in and of themselves, and are available six different ways. The Cowboy, for instance, is topped with bacon, an onion ring, avocado, cheddar and barbecue sauce. A truly unique option is The Rooster, embellished with ham, a fried egg, roasted tomato, smoked gouda and finished with white truffle mayonnaise.

he Terminal Brewhouse has become a landmark for beer lovers in Chattanooga. Brewmaster Steve Purdie keeps four of their amazing beers on tap year round, with rotating session beers taking a fifth spot and a sixth filled by seasonal offerings.

The Brewhouse beers may be humorously named—Terminally Ale Copper Ale, Rock Out With Your Bock Out Maibock— but they’re no joke. These are some of the highest caliber brews made in the region.

Foodies have reason to be enthralled with The Terminal, too. If they offered nothing but their appetizer menu, that

pub, short for public house, is defined in many sources as “an establishment where alcoholic beverages are sold.”

Those who frequent a true pub, on the other hand, will tell you that it’s a whole lot more than that. The Hair of the Dog defines the concept on their website as “where you go anytime to feel at home and to enjoy a meal and a pint or a cocktail.” That sounds just about right.

The menu, as one might expect, may be the very definition of “pub grub.” Feel-good favorites are produced in-house, from fried cheese and beer cheese soup to BLTs and patty melts.

Fish and chips, bangers and mash and their Bungalow Pie may be inspired from across the pond, but you’ll feel right at home finishing any of them off.

Pool and darts are available upstairs, but like any good pub, there’s plenty of conversation to be had anywhere in the building. That’s true outside, as well— Hair of the Dog has one of the more fantastic patio spaces in the city.

No matter how you’re seeking comfort, odds are Hair of the Dog is a pretty good place to start.

Roast and Queso Nachos? Yes, yes and yes, please.

For sandwiches, options range from The Macho Man, cajun chicken with hot sausage and pepper jack, to the It’s Always Sunny In Philly. (And don’t worry, even more care goes into making the food than coming up with the awesome names.)

hen you walk in The Honest Pint, the first thought to enter your mind may well be, “I hope everything else is as good as the decor.” Seriously.

The interior is stunning, with intricate woodwork and clever repurposing everywhere. The back bar is a work of art in and of itself. Luckily, the food and drinks are as good as the scenery.

The worst part of a trip to The Honest Pint is having to choose!

Thankfully, with a menu drawn from Irish classics and contemporary American trends, any choice is a great one at the Pint.

Appetizers, for instance, include tater tots fried in duck fat, pimento cheese fritters and potato pancakes. Have you tried the smoked chicken wings or one of their five variations of boxty?

hen “Southern food” is mentioned, don’t automatically assume fried chicken and biscuits.

Elemental, one of Chattanooga’s newest additions to the cuisine scene, gives customers a fresh take on what we would consider Southern food and emphasizes producing excellent quality dishes from food products grown in the South.

Elemental focuses on a “farm-to-table” philosophy. Since people are more aware of where their food comes from, Elemental aims “to cook with heritage ingredients and think about our ancestors,” says Chef Steven Satterfield.

The “Small Plates” section of the menu boasts unique items such as Boiled Peanut Hummus, Shroom & Grits with Benton’s Bacon, and Rustic Pork Mousse with Onion Marmalade & Mustard Caviar. Elemental is home to wood-fired flat breads (all under $10) topped with ingredients such as Bacon Marmalade, Sorghum Glazed Beed, and House Made Buttermilk Ricotta.

The “Mains” portion of the menu also has a variety of unique dish offerings like Roasted Turnips & Country Ham Crisps, Seared line-cut Chicken with Alabama White Sauce, Grilled Pickett’s Trout with Charred Brussel Sprouts, Carrots & Cornbread Panzanella, and a Whole Roasted Beet with Farro Risotto.

The “Ollie Pop” dessert is inspired by the owner’s son, Olliver. The cool treat is made with Milk and Honey’s vanilla gelato, with a hint of coconut, molded to a stick and dipped in rich Oliver and Sinclair chocolate.

Sticky Fingers P

roving to be nothing short of their name, Sticky Fingers welcomes clean hands so they can happily mess them up. The laidback blues-style restaurant is a haven for good Southern barbequed meat.

A few Chattanooga friends opened the first Sticky Fingers restaurant in Mount Pleasant, just outside Charleston, South Carolina in 1992. In December of 1997, they built Chattanooga’s first Sticky Fingers in historic Jack’s Alley downtown. A few years later they added their second location on the east side of town at the Hamilton Place Mall.

Most locals and out-of-towners would say Sticky Fingers has the best barbeque this side of Memphis. The Chattanooga Times Free Press readership voted Sticky Fingers the Best Ribs in the city for the past five years straight.

A little knowledge or inquiry of geography is helpful. Knowing, for example, that foie gras and most pâtés are dishes from Alsace points you to Alsatian wine. Often the decision is one in which it’s all good, and comes down to merely good, better or best: For instance, any light, crisp white wine such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc will taste great with raw oysters—but were you aware of a white wine called Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine, which has been grown for centuries at the mouth of the Loire River in France, next to one of the largest oyster beds in the Atlantic? erched in a beautiful location on the North Shore overlooking the river, Brewhaus prides itself in being Chattanooga’s only German-American gastropub.

The cuisine ranges from German favorites to Southern classics to high-end pub grub, with ingredients (many from local purveyors) intermingling with one another across their innovative menu.

Appetizers include their signature from-scratch Kraut Balls (sauerkraut, bratwurst and cheese, lightly floured and fried until golden brown) and Bavarian-style pretzels (fresh from Bluff View Bakery and served with a house-made trio of mustards).

Sandwiches with inspiration drawn from all over are available as well. The

Heidelberger Patty Melt is a prime example. Bratwurst and ground beef are combined and served between sourdough with grilled onions and pimento cheese.

Entrees include pork or veal schnitzels with a variety of toppings, from a fried

egg to creamy mushroom gravy.

There are also vegetarian-friendly dishes like The Veggie Spaetzle, German-style egg noodles in a creamy mushroom-pepper sauce with fresh vegetables. (You can even add a veggie bratwurst!)

Multiple beers rotate among the taps at Brewhaus, which are served by the half- or full liter. The O’zapft Is! Bier Club is a great option for brew lovers.

Members receive discounts on food as well as their favorite beverages, and even get to vote for new beers on draught. A large array of bottled beers, both German and domestic, is also available.

Lupi’s Pizza Pies

T

here’s a difference between a regular old pizza and a pizza pie. Locally owned since its beginning in 1996, Lupi’s Pizza Pies has given customers insight into how pizza pies are supposed to be. Lupi’s epitomizes what it means to be a pizza place. There’s even a small disco ball spinning above the kitchen area.

So, what makes them different from other pizza places? Tom Maynard, manager of Lupi’s downtown location, takes pride in his pizza pies being really hot, fresh, and consistent. “We also have one of the highest health scores downtown,” Maynard said.

Lupi’s uses locally sourced products whenever possible, including only local ground sausage and ground beef, local wheat flour, honey and eggs all year round.

During the growing season, the pizza palace uses local farmers to supply tomatoes, basil, oregano, zucchini, green peppers, cucumbers and flowers. They proclaim they are committed to using local products whenever possible because it allows them to provide a better, more healthy product, along with supporting our local economy.

erraMáe brings the Appalachian Trail’s rustic outdoors into the great city of Chattanooga in the form of cuisine. David Mitchell, managing partner with Mark Oldham, started developing the concept of the restaurant inspired by his goal of hiking the Appalachian Trail. Combine that with a love for the region’s cookery, and you get the spirit of that region in a restaurant with great food, passionate service, and unique culture.

The restaurant provides proportional meals ranging from small to “sharable,” a communal-style dining experience with family-sized helpings. Most notable here is the “Whole Grilled Snapper MKT” entrée.

The five-and-a-half pound red snapper is cooked and prepared whole, then served on a large cutting board or marble. This allows guests to get into the experience of sharing and enjoying interaction with the food. TerraMáe invites guests for Sunday brunch as well as lunch and dinner.

The craft cocktail menu includes brilliant combinations inspired by some of the Southern literature they’re named for. The “Mockingbird” craft cocktail, taking its name from the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird,” is made of Pinnacle gin, Rothman & Winter Créme di Violette, mint, blackberry and soda. The forever-changing and expanding wine list includes everything from famous Chardonnays and Bordeauxs to selections from micro-wineries.

iercing the corner of Market Street and Georgia Avenue, we can always recognize Pickle Barrel as “the place with the corner window.”

The pie-shaped venue—longtime home to musicians, students and various hipsters—has a full bar tucked to the left as you walk in. Wooden tables with artistically mis-matched chairs and benches sit along the two walls until they converge at the window booth where you can watch passersby.

But make your way from the snug, dimly lit downstairs up the spiral staircase and out into the fresh air at the outdoor patio, conveniently shaded by several of the few remaining larger trees in the downtown area, and a whole new vista opens up.

Perhaps the most popular menu item is the fried pickles, served with ranch or a light horseradish sauce. The pickles are fresh, crisp, perfectly fried and served piping hot.

Take a break from shopping or pop in on a lunch break and sit on the patio as you sink your teeth into their Reuben, topped with their “special dressing.” Note also that the Barrel makes its own saurkraut in a complicated procedure that involves the phases of the moon.

The menu also offers a Grilled Portabella Sandwich and a Black & Bleu Burger with chipotle mayo, bleu cheese, tomato, onion, hot pepper cheese, cooked with Eric’s special spicy Cajun seasoning.

efore opening the Mean Mug Coffeehouse in December 2012, the owners researched coffee shops in other cities, searching for that perfect blend of classic coffee shop and restaurant.

They used what they found to create a space that’s homey, comfortable and eclectic—and one in which you can get both a great cup of coffee and tasty, house-made food.

Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, you can enjoy breakfast (served all day) and fabulous sandwiches such as the “Denny” (egg scramble, American cheese, bacon and tomato) and the “Trap” (turkey, roasted red peppers, avocado smash and provolone), quiches and baked goods including a blueberry cinammon roll that is to die for. New York Pizza Department A major goal of New York Pizza Department is giving patrons the full experience of its namesake city without the requisite travel time. The restaurant just celebrated its one-year anniversary March 26, and has already been named Best New Restaurant in Tennessee for 2012 by Urbanspoon.com, as well as one of the “Top Ten Restaurants in Chattanooga” for 2013 by the same site.

Offering Chattanooga’s first authentic New York pizza by the slice—available in either the big, foldable style or with thick, chewy “Sicilian” crust—as well as whole pies, NYPD has something to please everyone. These pies are also a full 24 inches, almost half a size larger than any competitor.

Eighteen different specialty pies are on offer, including the “Meaty Accusation” (pepperoni, meatball, ground sausage and bacon) and the “Brazen Brooklyn Buffalo” (grilled chicken breast, buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, tomato and mozzarella cheese).

Other specialties of New York pizzerias are available as well, from garlic knots to calzones and stromboli.

New menu additions include authentic Philly cheesesteaks and Italian beef sandwiches. They even have tiramisu, cannoli and New York cheesecake for dessert! With a commitment to handmade, from-scratch ingredients, your choice always comes with the highest quality in mind.

The Cilen brothers consider their family-run establishment a tribute to the fallen heroes of 9/11, an event that shaped the lives of people around the globe.
