A P P L I C AT I O N A D V I C E Once you have made a final decision about finish and colour, it is then time to start the practical element of your decorating process – the painting. From surface preparation to Primers & Undercoats, the Farrow & Ball system to accessories, our application tips will guide you through the next steps to creating your perfect home.
12
P R E PA R I N G S U R FAC E S Proper preparation of the surface that you are going to be painting will help you to achieve the unique Farrow & Ball look in your home and get the most from your chosen colour and finish. There are a few things you can do to ensure this such as: Make sure the surface is in good condition – free of mould, clean and dry. Fill or seal any large imperfections. Apply the appropriate Farrow & Ball Primer & Undercoat (see below). For more detailed advice on surfaces and scenarios (such as whether it’s been painted before or is fresh plaster or wood), please refer to the Product Advice Sheets on our website or speak to one of our experts in a showroom, stockist or over the phone; you can find details at the back of this booklet.
P R I M E R S A N D U N D E R C O AT S Using Primers & Undercoats provides a sound surface for your chosen top coat to adhere to, making the finish even more durable and longer lasting. It also helps to fill in any small defects to ensure a smooth and even finish for the best possible results. Our Primers & Undercoats are made with the same finest quality ingredients and rich pigments as our paints. Tailored to different types of surface, each Farrow & Ball Primer & Undercoat is available in up to four tones to work in harmony with your chosen top coat – Red & Warm Tones, Dark Tones, Mid Tones and White & Light Tones. You can find the tone that’s best for your chosen colour on the back of the colour card. Farrow & Ball Primers & Undercoats are the first step in the Farrow & Ball System, helping you achieve an unmatched depth of colour which really brings your walls to life.
13
THE FARROW & BALL SYSTEM Our distinctive and inspiring paint colours are renowned for their depth and complexity, responding extraordinarily to all types of light and bringing walls to life. The transformational secret to the unique Farrow & Ball look is the Farrow & Ball system: • One coat of our Primer & Undercoat in the appropriate complementary tone • Two coats of your chosen top coat colour, each one bringing another layer of rich pigments The Farrow & Ball System ensures that you achieve the intense finish for which Farrow & Ball is renowned.
AT A G L A N C E Although each Primer & Undercoat has its own specific set of application guidelines, we’ve formulated them to follow the same basic process: 1. Prepare the surface making sure it’s clean, dry and free from dirt and grease. 2. Apply the appropriate Primer & Undercoat, in the correct colour tone for your chosen top coat, and wait for the recommended drying time to pass. You can find the right tone on the back of the colour card or on the website. 3. Apply two layers of your top coat, leaving sufficient drying time between each one.

16
F A R R O W & B A L L WA L L PA P E R Our wallpapers are handcrafted using our own paints and traditional trough or block printing methods. Our Stripes and Drags are made using the trough method; our craftsmen hand cut individual pads and secure them under a paint trough. The painted ground paper is then dragged underneath and the paint flows out onto it, creating the drag and stripe effects. For block printed patterns the ground paper is brushed with paint first to create the ground layer of texture, then, using either a roller or flat bed block meticulously cut with the pattern, the designs are printed on top, often with multiple colours to create body and weight. A transparent glaze is then applied over the top, making our papers wipeable. Creating our papers in this way means that not only do they hold the same rich pigment properties as our paints, but they also feature unique characteristics and a wonderful tactility. Whether it’s bold prints or something more subtle, our collection of florals, damasks, stripes and geometrics has something to appeal to all. Our specially formulated paste works in harmony with our papers, and its low alkalinity avoids the risk of affecting the decorative finish of the paper and preserves the distinctive colours. The paste comes in powder form and the tube doubles up as a measuring jug to make mixing the paste easier and ensure consistency. Five rolls of wallpaper can be hung with one tube of our paste.
17
H A N G I N G WA L L PA P E R Once you have ensured that the surface you’re going to paper is clean, dry and free from any traces of dirt, old wallpaper or flaking paint you can begin hanging your paper. • Check the pattern repeat before cutting the lengths according to the height of the wall, allowing two to three inches at the top and bottom for trimming. • Working from the centre outwards, apply a generous, even coat of paste over the paper ensuring that the edges are well pasted but avoid paste coming into contact with the pattern side of the paper. • Fold the paper with adhesive side inwards and allow the paper to soak for 10 minutes until pliable. Make sure the paper doesn’t become too wet, otherwise it may shrink back as it dries. • Ensure paper edges butt up to the subsequent lengths and avoid overlapping edges. • For best results we recommend that any central heating is turned off overnight to allow the paper to dry naturally. Please refer to our Product Advice Sheets for more detailed information, www.farrow-ball.com/product-advice-sheets
