Land Mines There is an estimated 4-6 million land mines littered across Cambodia. 35,000+ Cambodians are amputees.

Missing Limb Epidemic Amputees unable to receive treatment fashion crude homemade protheses that offer little functionality and durability. The high number of amputees without protheses is due to: - Limited distribution channels into rural countryside - Lack of knowledge that help is available.

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

Discrimination

Negative stigma surrounds disabled Cambodians. Children are bullied at school and parents of children with disabilities are disapproved of if they decide not to abandon their newborns.

How can we engage with Cambodian communities to instill child amputees with a sense of optimism and independence? 7

Occupational Therapy and Prostheticians Interviewing professionals exposed the intricate roles of caregivers and influenced our understanding of the delicacy behind recovery and regaining a patients livelihood.

- Simulating the experience of using prosthesis

- Looking at the fabrication and fitting and limbs

Mobile Clinic

Parts sourced from mass produced materials in the construction industry

Mobile clinic moves from town to town by road or waterways to provide new fitting, maintenance, education, instruction, and replacement.

Worn parts can be fabricated & replaced by NGO’s or the user’s community

Distribution Model

Our group business model consist of reaching directly to amputees with help from partner clinics and NGOS throughout Cambodia. Local transportation networks are used to distribute DIY prosthesis kits in rural areas of Cambodia.

Inviting amputees to test fit functional prototypes

Assumptions & Task Trials - Helped grasp the learning curve involved in adopting a prosthesis. - Identified crucial points of contact between the user and prosthesis. - Determined the strengths and able roles a prosthesis could play in a user’s life.

11

Benefits - Basic elbow actuation - Interchangeable end terminals - Made from easily sourced construction materials - Limb can be locally made with basic hand tools

Final Design Designing for children living in the most rural parts of Cambodia meant creating parts that they could shape and replace themselves. The ability to add on low cost end terminals opened the opportunity to create condition specific terminals to meet the challenges of an individual’s needs.

Ngan Au 68 Years of Age Ngan actively owns and manages a plant nursery. His work is highly physical and he doesn’t want old age to slow down his lifestyle.

Active but arthritic Ngan suffers from severe arthritic joints. He keeps several improvised tools and canes lying around to help him with balance.

Day in the life

An extended interview examines challenges experienced in daily life. Of all the things observed, the most interesting were the hand tools created by the user which served both mobility and work functions.

19

Walk in the shoes Understanding an experience first hand is vital to finding a meaningful solution. We took mobility devices for a test throughout the course of a day to examine the physical and psychological aspects of using assisted devices.

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

Discovery

Mobility aid users develop aches and pains because of incorrect posture. Long term usage worsens pain and leads to further dependency on mobility devices. An opportunity for improvement lies in correcting the behavior of bad posture.

The aim of an effective mobility device should be to adapt to the body in a way where stress is carefully distributed and/or alleviated properly.

21

Posture Perception Comfort Sound

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

These four elements were core concerns that were tackled through iterations between sketching and physical modeling.

Design Direction

The concept focuses on the responsiveness of the material. Harnessing steel’s subtle ability to flex, the cane bends just enough to support a user in motion without returning pressure to the user’s wrist.

23

Hand Shifted Forward This new form of the cane creates a position and grip that encourages straight palm to wrist alignment while still providing comfort, Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

stability and support.

The interaction between the wood and steel elements reinforce the strength of the contact point.

The patina quality of wood turns the handle into a more personalized object with use.

SolidWorks Soft Pad Chair Model*

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

* This is a replication of an existing29 chair, not my own design

Aluminum Group In 1958, Ray Eames developed Aluminum Group Chairs for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. In 1969, the designs by Aluminum group became the basis for Soft Pad Group.

Soft Pad Chair Soft Pad introduced plush, individually upholstered cushions to the designs of Aluminum Group extending the outdoor patio furniture into the home and office. The change in materials and aesthetic created a unique set of chairs that have been among the most popular seating choices for both homes and offices for more than 50 years.

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

Learning SolidWorks I chose the Eames Soft Pad Management chair as the object to CAD because it reflects an aesthetic I aspire to reach and offers an opportunity to learn surface modeling with hard and soft materials. Modeling this chair taught me to be flexible in approaching problem solving with an emphasis on finding alternative solutions to complex problems. 31

35

Model Making The design for a tablet dock was an exercise exploring model making methods and techniques that sought to refine our craftsmanship and skill in the practice.

Rapid Physical Exploration Prototype exploration began with finding and combining mechanisms of interests as a fast method of forming ideas for functionality and interaction.

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

Sketching Development

Sketching was involved in the process to aid form development. The quality and effects that the appearance model would display were factors that guided design decisions.

37

The appearance model was preceded by a foamcore model, CAD model and detail model.

Appearance Model - The appearance model simulated concrete with

layers of paint textures using a spray gun. - The model featured an underglow lighting effect

through created through a central LED strip and wireless remote

Weekend Warrior The Professional. The Thrill Seeker. Whether it is a concert, kayaking, half-marathon or impromptu campout, he is waiting and ready.

“ I do more than just bike, I need a bag that can adapt to the things I do off my bike too!”

Gear Cross Over The Weekend Warrior has his collection of gear from the sports and hobbies that he loves. He doesn’t need another bag that he can only use once or can’t carry over to his other activities.

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

Inspired by DIY

Bike camper interviews brought up DIY options as a method of cutting costs and addressing specific cargo needs. Creating a system which allowed users to choose what they wanted to carry became the primary driver for design.

43

DIY Bicycle Mounts Integrating the hard and soft elements of the cargo carrier was a challenge overcome by creating my own set of mounts. The DIY mounts use 3 points of contact mounted to a backboard to secure it itself onto the rear rack of the bike.

Mounting Instructions

Step 1

Step 2

Secure preload to foot of rear bike rack.

Raise top mounts up to rails of rear rack and secure firmly

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

Sewn Models Paper prototypes were used to create fast models to understand how to construct new explorations while Tyvec models were sewn together to test the validity of concepts.

The prototypes were built to carry round containers that would be more difficult to secure in order to ensure that the pack would hold a range of cargo beyond flat boxes.

Nicole 22 Years of Age Nicole is a busy college student who lives in a shared apartment space. She is into urban culture and has a taste for things that reflect a bold, simple and bright look.

Scenario She likes her compact living area but she does not have enough workspace when she needs it. Her printer is the biggest obstacle in her way and it often finds a home on the floor when she needs more room.

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

Nicole’s workspace is frustrating due to the accumulation of devices she needs to function as a student. The problem worsens when she needs to use the printer because the mess is then spread further around the room.

53

Design Requirements

Exploration considered other ways printers could be expressed within the context of small spaces. They had to be functional yet accommodating for the companion devices which drive and assist them.

Brian.Au@icloud.com I 1.408.318.7080

Design The final design functions as a printer and a laptop station. A simplified workspace became the ultimate goal. A device that was in front of the user when they need it but hidden away when not in use.

55

Post-Crisis Consumer Shaken after the 2008 financial crisis and global recession, consumers escaped their state of anxiety through collaboration and utilizing their networks to de-leverage from liability and risks. Their values focus on supporting local and community but they carry a general distrust of established market systems.

Third Space A location that provides space to form informal social networks that is important to feeling integrated into the urban social community. The need for third space rises as cities move towards retrofitting suburbia and residents turn to living locally.

Public Fitness Health and fitness is continuing to be a rising trend but the facilities that cater to the public have fallen out of favor with their tech savvy users who prefer newer more responsive and connected choices.
