THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT Directed by Lars Von Trier. Starring: Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz, Uma Thurman. When I think of all the things, I’ve done in my life without in any way resulting in punishment. - Jack Lars Von Trier is at his most provocative in this explicitly gruesome tale of a serial killer named Jack. One scene alone was enough to cause walkouts at the Cannes film festival, and after seeing it, my advice would be not to walk in. The film follows a serial killer named Jack over the course of several decades. It features scenes of ultraviolence: mutilating a woman by slicing her breast off, shooting two children, and showing Jack as a child removing a duckling’s leg with a pair of pliers and then throwing the creature into the river. Despite these comments from Matt Dillion: I had more dialogue in this film than I’ve had in any film that I’ve done before, a lot. But we never rehearsed, that was the thing. We had basically made a pact of trust with each other, Lars and I, and I trusted him thoroughly. One time I said to him in the scene I did with Riley and that was a very difficult scene for me, not just because the way he murders her, the way he treats her, it was very difficult. I said “Lars, I think we should rehearse this scene because it is very physical, and he said: Okay, Let’s do one like that and do one without a rehearsal”, and that’s the way we worked a lot. The film was very dark, but the atmosphere was not dark at all. It was a good atmosphere on the set, a vibrant environment. - Matt Dillon. Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman and others have stated that Von Trier is a charming man to work with, so why are his films so, objectional to our senses? Because of all his fears, anger, neuroses, cruelty, he puts into his movies and have the desired cathartic effect for him by releasing these emotions and behaviour through his characters and letting the audiences make what they will of them. He wants you to react, he wants you walk out or hate his film. He then feels that he has achieved his goal.

Von Trier bathes himself in controversy and his statements about “The House That Jack Built” bear witness to that. Regarding the audience reaction to the film, the walkouts, some people even feeling sick… I am disappointed only 100 people vomited. This is fine with me. It is important that a film divides. I would have liked 200 people to vomit. - Von Trier This film is like a kind of bacteria in your stomach. A statement that he was proud of. No doubt he is proud of also being a misogynist which is a prevalent theme in his film. Awful things happen to female leads in his previous films too: Breaking Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Nymphomaniac, and Melancholia. There were always women and they were always suffering, I thought. I thought if it works for Carl Dreyer and his “The Passion of Joan of Arc.” Look, I just thought I was home free here because I had done my duty with female leads. So, I could now have a man as a lead. - Von Trier Von Trier’s life is an odd as he is. Raised just outside Copenhagen and took the second bit of his surname from his mother’s husband – who was not his actual father, as he once believed – and later added the “Von” as an affectation. He studied film at the University of Copenhagen in his 20s before his underground hit The Element of Crime in 1984. But it was Breaking the Waves, starring Emily Watson that gained him worldwide publicity. Where then does The House That Jack Built sit in his filmography? For Von Trier…a controversial masterpiece. For MbM:

A FILM THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN MADE A FILM THAT SHOULD BE BURIED IN THE CINEMA CEMETERY A FILM THAT FAILS TO INSPIRE AND ENCOURAGE ASPIRING FILMMAKERS A FILM THAT ONE SHOULD TRY TO FORGET AND NOT LET IT TAKE UP RESIDENCE IN YOUR MIND. A Don’t-See Movie.
