INTRODUCTION

From the Executive Director

A

ugust happens. We pack ten months of living into three months and take the sudden and sneaky winter to catch our breaths. Here’s good information for some upcoming fall programs while we take in the lingering longer summer days. As we identified in our strategic plan, we are expanding professional development opportunities for the Lander area workforce. Working toward that goal, we are again partnering with the Wyoming Small Business Development Center to bring you a two-day Profit Mastery seminar. In this training, master facilitator Bruce Morse provides everything you need to know to fortify your cash flow. Also, the application process is open for Leadership Fremont County. A local adaptation of the state-wide Leadership Wyoming, Leadership Fremont County’s purpose is to identify individuals who have displayed a strong tendency toward civic involvement, and assist them in developing their potential to become community leaders. Having particiated last year, I highly recommend the program! Additionally, we continue to work closely with the Lander Economic Development Association to maximize promoting Lander economical growth. As you may have heard, LEDA is improving local infrastructure by introducing a new fiber optic line to Lander, creating a redundant loop that will help (in particular) new technology, medical, and financial service organizations. (Plus, you might just see an increase to your web browsing speeds!) Finally, you may have heard the buzz about Lander LIVE, our free summer concert series on North First Street off of Main. Special thanks to the sponsors, contractors, volunteers, organizers and audience who came out for July 21 inaugural show featuring Lucero. The next show is August 4 and will feature the music of Donna the Buffalo!

Sometimes it is the matter of paying a hard-to-reach invoice: As a freelance contractor, I always seem to scramble when the property tax bill comes in just after sticker shock of an April 15 (surprise!) tax payment. It happens every year. I am pretty certain with a few basics, motivating tools, and the access to some financial coaching I’d surrender my desktop toothbrush and embrace planning ahead for a pile of overachiever gold stars. Financial Management (cont.) Here’s a the nitty-gritty marketing copy from the SBDC website: “The most successful businesses have found that the key to longterm success revolves around effective financial management. Through case studies and a down-to-earth style, experience this remarkable powerful program: understand why and how to benchmark your company performance; establish the difference between “making a profit” and “having cash” and how to do more of both; create effective, practical plans to improve the financial health of your business. The format is a combination of video presentation by a leading expert,

What adult doesn’t love a solid, bound copy of fiscal exercises, guides, and tools to arm you for confident, improved business performance? One of the most prevalent issues we hear from our chamber business members is increased revenue and wishlists (I want to remodel and have a showroom) (I want to actually go on vacation at some point in my life) (I would love to hire some part-time help) (I wish I had more fluid inventory) (I want to contract out mowing my

lawn every two days) —all wants and needs not really sticking somewhere in the future landscape. This Profit Mastery class is catching you up on basics, identifying benchmarks, making proactive decisions, and quickly launching you into mastering your own profit. We know it is August and October seems like two years away. We also know that in about two more blinks it will be winter. Capacity is limited for this class and we encourage early sign-up before enrollment closes. We are certain you’ll leave excited about your next business moves in 2016.

t takes a village to put on great events. The planning team for the new concert series, Lander LIVE, explored several avenues for a professionalgrade stage option in Lander. The Lander Chamber of Commerce, in hiring and hosting nationally touring, headliner bands, wanted to provide something less primitive than a flatbed trailer. Alternative options, such as purchasing or renting a stage, were costprohibitive for the startup season. This is when

T

he Leadership Fremont County Program was founded in 2003 by a joint steering committee comprised of representatives from the Riverton Chamber of Commerce, Lander Chamber of Commerce, Wind River Indian Reservation, Dubois

Community Project, City of Riverton, City of Lander, NOLS, and Central Wyoming College. The purpose of the program is to introduce and orient established and prospective leaders to the great community of Fremont County, identify individuals who have displayed a strong

tendency toward civic involvement, and assist them in developing their potential to become community leaders. Leadership Fremont County is a series of nine sessions over a 9-month period covering such areas as leadership skills, decision-making, strategic planning and coalitionbuilding. Important topics that will be examined include area history, economic development, social-economic factors, tourism & marketing, education, and tribal history and relations. Leadership Fremont County is now accepting applications for the 20142015 class which begins in September. The cost is $375 for the program and employers often sponsor an employee.

Part of leadership is knowing the people inside the businesses and companies around you - in LFC these are the connections you make. Lorre Hoffman Board Member, Leadership Fremont County
