introduction

From the Executive Director

W

e have a lot of exciting opportunities for Lander’s business community in August! First on August 16 at the Inn At Lander, we will be hosting Senator Mike Enzi from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. As our United States Senator, Enzi will provide a legislative update and answer audience questions about an array of topics spanning from a local-to-national scope. As part of your Chamber membership we will provide one complimentary ticket; additional tickets can be purchased for $15 at the Chamber office. Also, the application process is open for Leadership Fremont County. A local adaptation of the statewide Leadership Wyoming, Leadership Fremont County’s purpose is to identify individuals who have displayed a strong tendency toward civic, business, or nonprofit involvement, and assist them in developing their potential to become community leaders. This is an absolute-must for anyone wanting a next step in developing their professional network and leadership skills. Next, to meet our goal of informing the business community of what conventions and conferences are coming to Lander, we will be identifying these groups and letting you know their relative size. Additionally, the Lander Chamber continues to distribute thousands of convention packets to these groups to let them know what to do in the area and refer our member businesses. Let us know if you would like to have your business information included in these packets! And... oh, yeah, August is going to be an awesome month for Lander LIVE! Get ready for Lake Street Dive and the Fruit Bats. A reminder that both shows have opening acts taking the stage at 5:30 p.m., followed by the headliner at 7:00 p.m. See you there!!!

E

nzi was sworn as Wyoming’s 20th United States Senator on January 7, 1997. Before that he started a shoe store in Gillette and was mayor for 8 years and state legislator for 10 years. Senator Enzi has made a name on Capitol Hill for his unique way of breaking down party lines and working across the aisle. He has had more than 100 bills signed into law with a signatures from each of the last three presidents. He had the good fortune marry his wife Diana in 1969. They are the parents of three and the grandparents of four. The joy of representing Wyoming is topped by few things. Being a grandfather and flyfishing are two.

etro-soul doesn’t often make a huge splash in the rock and roll music world, but in 2016 Lake Street Dive may just do it. This former New England Conservatory of Music foursome came together in 2004 in Boston and quickly migrated from jazz to soul rock. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, the band is led by Rachael Price on vocals and accompanied by Mike “McDuck” Olson on trumpet and guitar, Bridget Kearney on upright bass, and Mike Calabrese on drums. In spring 2016 they released their fourth album, Side Pony (Nonsuch Records), which

highlights the band’s power front woman in Price, excellent harmonic support from the rest of the band, and addictive singles that promise to make the band a household name by year’s end. Since the beginning of 2016 Lake Street Dive has been featured on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, CONAN, Tiny Desk Concert at the NPR studios in Washington, DC, and are spending the rest of the year touring the country with Side Pony.

Low water string band This Lander-grown band has been wowing audiences around the state with their Wyoming infused bluegrass sound. Members Jared Scott (banjo, vocals), Joe Lefevre (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), Anne Scott (bass, guitar, vocals), Stuart Cerovksi (guitar) and Brian Hensien (lead guitar) are touring this summer with their new album featuring 12 original hop-up-and-dance songs.

ruit Bats started in the mid 1990s as the four-track project of Eric D. Johnson. The name “Fruit Bats” was one of many monikers found on the original cassettes, which in the end stuck. In early 2000, Johnson joined the cast of characters that made up Califone and the whole Perishable Records family. It was this kinship with a bunch of like-minded folks that coaxed the Fruit Bats from out of the bedroom and turned the shy lo-fi project into a real band. Since 2002 the Fruit Bats have release four successful records with the venerable Seattle imprint with Sub Pop Records. Their fifth album, released this spring, Absolute Loser came together after a several year break. Since 2015 the band is back and has been touring with My Morning Jacket and recently sold out two nights Memorial Weekend at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado.

he Leadership Fremont County Program was founded in 2003 by a joint steering committee comprised of representatives from the Riverton Chamber of Commerce, Lander Chamber of Commerce, Wind River Indian Reservation, Dubois

Community Project, City of Riverton, City of Lander, NOLS, and Central Wyoming College. The purpose of the program is to introduce and orient established and prospective leaders to the great community of Fremont County, identify individuals who have displayed a strong

tendency toward civic involvement, and assist them in developing their potential to become community leaders. Leadership Fremont County is a series of nine sessions over a 9-month period covering such areas as leadership skills, decision-making, strategic planning and coalitionbuilding. Important topics that will be examined include area history, economic development, social-economic factors, tourism & marketing, education, and tribal history and relations. Leadership Fremont County is now accepting applications for the 20162017 class which begins in September. The cost is $375 for the program and employers often sponsor an employee.
