Light Up Lander

M

ark your calendars for Light Up Lander: Saturday, Dec. 3!

Events begin in Mr. D’s parking lot (7th & Main) with canned food drive, games, hayrides, and a chance to visit with Santa from 3-5pm. Beginning at 5:30pm participants are encouraged to join Santa, Lander Valley High School band and parade floats down Main Street to Centennial Park where all of Main Street and the Lander Christmas tree will be lit up. The event ends at 6:30pm. This is an awesome opportunity for downtown and Main Street businesses to kick off the holiday season with extended business hours, live or festive window displays, deals and sales to attract post-Light Up Lander attendee shopping. At the very least we hope you can have your lights on for this wonderful “light up the holidays” event.

Light up Lander is always an event the community looks forward to; this year will be no different!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PROPANE SAFETY AND WINTER STORMS As the thermometer goes down, preparation for winter weather is a must. If you use propane in your home, make sure that you and your family know and understand what needs to be done before, during, and after winter storms. Taking a few simple propane related safety precautions and discussing them with your family can help you all thoroughly enjoy the upcoming winter wonderland. It is important to make sure your propane tank, whether it is located above or below the ground, is marked properly by a flag, pole, or stake that is higher than the average snow cover depth for your location. By doing this it will increase the odds of it being seen by someone such as a snowplow operator and your propane delivery driver. It is also important to note that propane delivery trucks are very wide, please clear your driveway to a width of 12 feet to allow access. Don’t forget to clear a path to your propane tank so your delivery driver can easily make your propane delivery. It is important to have an adequate supply of propane in your tank during the winter months because winter storms may cause access to your property to be limited. It is recommended that you establish an automatic delivery schedule with Western States Propane to avoid your tank running out of propane. Snow and ice can create serious problems for your home’s propane system by freezing and cracking pipes, regulators, valves, or other types of propane equipment. Once the snow has fallen, make certain that the venting of ALL gas appliances and propane regulators remain clear of snow and ice. Should snow or ice cover a vent, bend or break the venting, gas fumes could become trapped in a home which could potentially cause carbon monoxide poisoning. When clearing the roof, avoid shoveling snow onto exposed piping around the propane regulator near the building or onto the propane tank and piping, as well as any meters or other piping that may be in use. In addition, all propane tanks should be kept free of any snow accumulation. Whenever possible, use a broom instead of a shovel in order to not damage your propane system components. Make sure you know how and where to shut off the outdoor propane supply and indoor propane appliances and that all family members know what propane smells like and can detect its odor.

IF YOU SMELL PROPANE, TAKE THE RIGHT STEPS: 1. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. 2. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cellphones. 3. Get everyone away from the home or area where you suspect gas is leaking. 4. If safe to do so, close or shut off the main gas supply valve by turning it clockwise. 5. Call Western States Propane immediately from a safe place to report the leak. If you cannot reach us, call 911 and do not return to the area until Western States Propane, an emergency responder, or qualified service technician gives the OK. 6. GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, Western States Propane must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free. NEVER store or place a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area such as a basement, garage, shed, or tent. It is recommended that you install a carbon monoxide and propane gas detector listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance, these defectors provide an additional measure of safety and security for you and your family. Last but not least, create an emergency preparedness plan and review it regularly with your family in order to keep them safe during the upcoming winter season. For more information regarding winter storm preparedness or for questions during a winter storm, contact Western States Propane for information.

Grief During The Holidays

Holidays can be difficult when we are grieving the loss of a loved one. They may stir up memories of the past, evoke powerful feelings, force us to recognize our loss, and remind us that we have to be mindful of our grief.

TIPS TO NAVIGATE THE SEASON

Express the feelings as they arise. It is important to grieve and understand that it is a process. Honor the memory of your loved one. Plan activities and ways to stay busy or keep from being too busy. Find the right mixture of activity and freedom from unnecessary stress Find ways to soothe yourself that is nurturing. The holidays may not be a time of perfect bliss and your true feelings may be quite different from the mythology that the media portrays. Give yourself some leeway to be yourself and to accept whatever your feelings tell you.
