ummer is here! Every year we kick off the season with Lander Brewfest and this year’s festival will be better than ever. This summer we are

moving the event back to City Park and loading it with tons of programming such as: “You Be the Beer Judge” table, Brewers Corner Classes, Beer Trivia, and the Lawn Game Olympics. Between the Fremont Area Road Tour and Wyoming.com’s “Golf with the Brewers”—there is something for everyone and all ages are welcome. In late June we have the Wyoming Outdoor Weekend & Expo: a consumer trade show bringing out thousands of outdoor enthusiasts. Some of our favorite highlights will be outdoor field trips: everything from fly-casting

In our first week since Lander Bucks rolled out (our local currency program) we have dispensed hundreds of dollars—money guaranteed to stay in our community. In case you missed May’s newsletter article, Lander Bucks are checks in pre-denominations that are creditable at any Lander Chamber business member. You can even buy Lander Bucks online and have them shipped to your house or ready for pickup at the chamber office. Finally, we are taking the first steps towards assembling a Young Professionals Network to address the needs of the aspirational business community—those whom are early in their careers and are looking for networking, professional development, and career counseling. eviewing the last decade, Fremont County experienced significant growth and received major benefits from tourism, a principal revenue generator in Wind River Country. According to Dean Runyan Associates, “visitors traveling to and throughout Wyoming represent an important component of the state’s economy: business sales, payroll, employment and tax receipts. Many areas in Wyoming consider travel and tourism a primary industry.” The Wyoming Office of Tourism has employed the economic and marketing research firm Dean Runyan Associates for data-mining the “The Economic Impact of Travel on Wyoming”— an analysis of visitor and tourism data statewide and for each county. According to the Wind River Visitors Council, in 2014 Fremont County’s performance ranked #8 out of 23 counties. Fremont County visitors spent $140 million in 2014, a positive growth of $2.3 million since 2013, and an impressive 82% increase since 2000.

Qu’est que c’est? WAM asked municipalities throughout Wyoming for nominations for individuals, groups, and organizations whose contributions enhance strong communities. The City of Lander nominated the Lander

programs impacted by Lander Ambassadors. Most Ambassadors spend several hours a month volunteering for and personally investing in major events (ISPSSSDR, Cycle Greater Yellowstone, Business After Hours) and independently serve as community leaders. “The Ambassadors are a pretty humble group really…. We frequently volunteer to help at local events and ask for no recognition. We are just proud to be residents of Lander and help when we can to make our community a better place.” [Author note: this is the fifth ambassador who asked to be quoted anonymously. The sentiment of service and dedication is shared unanimously throughout the group.]

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS Chamber Ambassadors Win

Over the years, the volunteer efforts of the Ambassadors have raised over $300,000 to benefit local organizations. Most recently, at the biennial Ambassador Extravaganza, the group raised a ceilingshattering $48,000 to complete the Lander Convention and Community Center (in addition to their participation for $50,000 donated over two years by the Lander Chamber.) A few of these sometimespublicly-shy, yet ever-valiant souls will travel to Cheyenne on June 12th to accept the Community Hero Award at the WAM Convention’s President’s Banquet. Until then, keep an eye out for a tucked-in cape, blue blazer, and a true Lander smile.

arlier in 2015, when Feike van Dijk read Global Arts was for sale, he made two calls. First he phoned his wife Noelle, just returning from a regular medical appointment in Salt Lake City and researching local galleries. “Get on this,” was her immediate response. Feike called friends Josh and Emily Scheer next. “Is everything okay?” he asked. (Global Arts

All Roads Lead to Global Arts each growing up with a unique perspective of the trade. Feike, an exuberant and verbose extrovert, has a business degree and soul of a musician. Noelle, more introspective and quietly passionate, is a painter with a degree in fine arts. Her first consignment was in 2003… at the grand opening of the original Global Arts.

THE LOVE STORY “Drummers never end up with a groupie,” explained Feike. Noelle was attending college in Connecticut, spending holidays with her mother in Lander. The pair met in 2003 when Feike, a full-time musician from the Netherlands, was touring and recording in the United was thriving only after two States. AN EXPRESSION OF HEALING In our interview, Feike abstractly refers to the horrific accident as “the tragedy” while sharing brief latitudes about the dark transitions of recovery, loss, grieving, and the inherent gratitude he feels for the community. “This tragedy didn’t just happen to us.

It happened to the entire community. We’re not the only ones going through this.” In October 2014, Feike stepped away from his job and shared his despair of what to do next. “Our family needed to decide to ‘fight or take flight.’” Since college, he and Noelle have been longtime care providers, serving in community-centered programs helping those in need. It has been a life-changing ten months: “The only reason our family has a new home, a vehicle, clothes and food... and now—this opportunity for our new job—is because of this community. Because of that outpouring of love, through financial, emotional, physical, and spiritual support, we now have a way to stay here and fight for our livelihood and have the means to give back.” THE NEW BEGINNING Global Arts has a new storefront window display made from doors of Lander’s iconic grain elevator and re-purposed fence posts. The gallery and gift shop showcases 105 artists, all exclusively from Wyoming, with approximately 90% residing in Fremont County.

Typically galleries charge 60% commission, where Global Arts reverses the consignment percentages in support of the artist. In addition, the shop is not simply a shelf to sell gifts to visitors: Global Arts fosters its artists by promoting works through Etsy, eBay, and rotating exhibits through other main street shops. “It is our way of giving back to this community. We now have something to hand down to our children. It is therapeutic for us, sharing what we love, helping fellow artists, and providing this community with art, beauty, and meaningful exchanges. Many, many roads lead us here to Global Arts.”

with my boys,” is how Feike, with deep reverence, described their two-acre home in Lyons Valley. In July of 2014, the van Dijk’s suffered unspeakable loss. An errant spark combined with fierce valley winds ravaged their entire home and family in an unmerciful few minutes. Two of their five children, four-year-old Zephan and two-year-old Noah, perished in the accident. The lifeflights, burn centers, ongoing medical appointments, hospital and emergency services, complete loss of home, vehicles, and personal property... all totaled a massive devastation for the van Dijk family and their vast community of friends and loved ones.
