introduction

From the Executive Director

R

ecently, our Associate Director Carol King went down with the Wind River Visitor Council to the

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Lorielle Morton, President McKee, Marburger & Fagnant, PC

Wyoming Governor’s Hospitality and Tourism

Conference in Cheyenne. In addition to rolling out a new branding champaign, the Wyoming Office of Tourism reported that the tourism industry is thriving—again coming off of a record year in terms of number of visitors.

John Dailey, Vice President The Hitching Rack Home Source Realty

Krista Lobera, Treasurer Holiday Inn Express & Suites

Despite consistent positive performance, Wyoming’s one billion dollar industry saw recent attacks to funding during the statewide budget process, and luckily in the end was able to keep the Governor’s budget recommendation intact. Get ready, because 2016 is expected to be another recordsetting year in terms of Tourism. Speaking of another great year for tourism, the Tourism Asset Development program deadline closes March 23. If you have a program that develops our local tourism attractions and brings people to Lander, you may apply for up to $1,500 in support to keep our visitor industry thriving. Thanks for all the people who came out to show support

for this year’s Community Awards winners. We packed the hall with over 160 attendees, all enjoying the delicious catering of Wyoming Catholic College. It is always amazing to see our membership come together and celebrate our community doing amazing things. Finally, March is when we begin soliciting volunteers to serve on our board of directors. Board members are responsible for the governance and long term vision of the Lander Chamber. If you have an interest in investing your time and expertise in a growing organization fostering the business climate of Lander, please let us know!

Every year the Lander Chamber solicits nominations from the community for noteworthy businesses and individuals deserving recognition in the Lander community. At February’s Community Awards Luncheon, seven awards were given to the following winners:

Community Awards Luncheon

The Anchor Award Brian Clark: Clark’s Landscaping Clark’s Yard and Garden was started in 1962 by Hugh and Irene Clark. The original greenhouse was on the corner of No. 9th St. and Amoretti, which they operated until the early 1970s. The greenhouse was sold and the business became Clark’s Landscaping, which specialized in sod and sprinkling systems. At this time, the two Clark sons, Mark and Brian, were underpaid and overworked teenagers! Mark went off to college and Brian became the underpaid and overworked owner in 1984, buying the business from his parents, who retired. The business managed to survive the less-than-prosperous ‘80s and has continued to thrive through the years, thanks to very loyal customers. Clark’s Landscaping still specializes in residential and commercial landscaping and sprinkling

Beautification Award Trey Warren Trey grew up in Texas and moved to Lander in June 1994 to rock climb. He fell in love with Lander and all it had to offer – he never left! To support his climbing habit, Trey worked as a handyman and carpenter for realtors and other builders. Wanting more creative control and in order to take his craft to the next level, Trey started Whimpy Wolf Builders in 2001, the same year Trey’s daughter was born. Some of Trey’s projects include the building that currently houses Popo Agie Conservation District at So. 2nd and Garfield; the former Bottle Shop (now Fremont Frameworks) renovation; the Pushroot Community Garden pavilion on Amoretti Street; the Chamber’s Lander Live stage at Jaycee Park and many, many custom homes and remodels. Trey’s current project is the redevelopment of the Lander

systems and Brian looks forward to continuing to serve his loyal customers into the future.

Community Awards (cont.) Rookie of the year Steve Osborn Lander Valley Aviation, Steve Osborn grew up in Fremont County and served in the U.S. Army in 1972-1973. Using his GI Bill, he began attending Colorado Aero Tech in 1982 and graduated in 1984. Steve has been maintaining aircraft for 32 years. He returned to Lander in 2001 with his wife, Cory, and their two sons. Lander Valley Aviation provides high quality aviation maintenance to the community, serving Fremont County and beyond.

Spirit of Lander Award Rio Rose, Lander Bike Mill Rio Rose moved to Lander 13 years ago to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors that entices so many to visit our area. Rio opened The Bike Mill in 2013 as an outlet for his love of biking and his method of sharing that love with the community. Through The Bike Mill, and his involvement with the Lander Cycling Club, Rio is helping to put the Lander area trails on the map. Since moving to Lander, Rio has worked with the BLM and the Forest Service to refine existing trails and create new ones for the community to enjoy. Lifetime contribution Award Mick Wolfe, Past Mayor of Lander Mick Wolfe was born and raised in Lander. Mick attended school in Lander and joined the U.S. Navy, serving two tours during the Vietnam Conflict as an air crewman flying off of the USS Hornet.

Mick was elected to the City Council in 1992 and elected Mayor in 2002, serving until December 2014. He was the owner of Wolfe Drilling Company, a business started by his grandfather in 1938. His accomplishments as Council Member and Mayor are many. Among a few are: Main Street Rehabilitation 1992 and 1998; Upgraded Water Treatment Plant; Veteran’s Memorial; Optional One Cent Tax to rehab Lander streets and infrastructure; rebuild of the Lander Community and Convention Center; and Military Banners on Main Street. Past President Award Jeff Young, Past President of the Lander Chamber of Commerce Jeff is a licensed professional civil engineer for the Trihydro Corporation with 20 years of experience in geotechnical and transportation engineering, materials science and surveying. Jeff is published in the fields of both geotechnical and transportation engineering and has provided engineering services on many projects throughout Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain region including foundation recommendations for every large building constructed in Lander in the last 17 years. Jeff now owns and operates a medium sized cattle ranch in Lander with his wife Amber, daughter Delaney and son Peyton.

Community

Call for New Board Members The Lander Chamber of Commerce has a variety of ways to volunteer toward improving our business community. In order of time commitment: volunteering at individual chamber events is a great first step; next is serving on a committee; and at the highest level is serving on our board of directors.

The purpose of the Lander Chamber Board of Directors is to provide governance, long

term vision, and advising that ensures the organization exists into perpetuity. Board of Directors are like the owners of a for-profit organization, except they are exclusively volunteers and are not compensated; donating their time, networks and/or occasionally their financial resources.

The Lander Chamber seeks candidates who possess interpersonal maturity,

communication skills, a broad business background, and the desire to promote a vibrant economy in Lander. Our board of directors meet once a month, the third Wednesday from 7:00 - 8:30 a.m. Additionally, there are approximately 10 hours of work outside of meetings.

If you think you might be interested, contact our Executive Director, Brian Fabel, about

next steps: director@landerchamber.org or 307-332-3892.

The Tourism Asset Development (TAD) program is now accepting applications! Eligible organizations are able to apply for up to $1,500. The award decisions are based on meeting the criteria of the application and the applicant pool is generally competitive.

The deadline for

applications is March 23, 2016. Applications will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate that their programming has a direct benefit to the tourism industry, specifically in the Lander area.

Priority will be given for

multi-day events, programs that highlight the unique nature of Lander’s tourism assets, and those that bring outside primary tourism dollars into our community.
