Chamber of Commerce

INTRODUCTION

From the Executive Director

M

ay marks my one-year anniversary joining the Lander Chamber team. Between the guidance of our board of directors, the help of our Associate Director Carol King, and the professional development of the U.S. Chamber Institute program, I feel prepared and excited looking ahead to year two. The Lander Chamber of Commerce has done a lot in this past year: developed and broadened our in-house team (Jess Rice, Rose Burke, Barb Spyer, Bark Clark, and Molly Herber) revitalized new publication and materials, and continued to bolster our member benefits and programming. One of the revised member benefits we are excited to release is Lander Bucks: a local currency program (think credit voucher that can be used at any Lander Chamber business) for spending and shopping locally. Regardless of where you stand on the buzz-term “Shop Local” most of you earn money here in Fremont County. Lander Bucks is a fun way to share and invest back into the community. We’re excited to present a creative way to keep money local and reinforce a local buying habit. (Learn more in our featured article). A few more things coming down the road: the registration forms for our Flower Barrel Program continue to come in, and there is still time to register for your cost-effective beautification of your business space. We continue the preparation for the Fremont Toyota Lander Brewfest and Lander LIVE. How do these bands sound? Lucero, Elephant Revival, Donna the Buffalo, Spirit Family Reunion, Chanman Roots Band, Sol Seed, and more to come! Go to landerbrewfest.org to pre-purchase tickets online for a discount—only six weeks left until we launch summer! Brian Fabel Executive Director Lander Chamber of Commerce

Brighten a reward-worthy employee’s day with a $5 Lander Bucks and treat them to a latte, sticky bun, or chokecherry shake. Thank your neighbor for feeding the cat and secretly using your hot tub with $20 of Lander Bucks (they may in turn use toward buying you a new bath mat). Tell your everdoting long-distance relative all you want for Christmas is a $100 in Lander Bucks (they can buy online) and—because you already have too many expedition socks from your partner—donate it to your favorite non-for-profit. “Shop Local” is more

than just warm fuzzies and good karma like eating kale smoothies for lunch: the extra $10 you spend locally doesn’t just support the primary business. This hardwon income adventures onto secondary markets supporting shipping, wholesalers, professional services, utilities, and suppliers. But wait, there’s more: each transaction from consumer to second and third markets also provides local tax revenue for convenient infrastructure such as roads, libraries, public education, municipalities, and EMS programs. So come be part of the groundswell of a new trend! Lander Bucks is the latest in

incentivizing programs to change the way we think, act, and spend... making shopping local fun, relevant, and impactful. NUTS AND BOLTS

WHO: Lander Bucks can be purchased by anyone, given to anyone, and spent at any Lander Chamber member business. An additional member benefit, Chamber businesses may affordably advertise their logo on the checkcertificate page: a gentle suggestion to the shopper where to spend!

T

he A.D. Martin Lumber Company celebrates a one-year anniversary with the Lander Chamber and sixty-one years in business, with two locations in Riverton and Dubois. Standing out as one of a handful of local, true manufacturing industry businesses in our area, John Martin, (a fourth-generation business owner) renewed his Lander chamber membership because “A.D. Martin Lumber does a lot of business in the Lander area and we have long standing familial ties in Fremont County. Our membership is an investment and contribution to our partnership within this community.” In addition to supplying lumber, building materials, and millwork, A.D. Martin Lumber Co. is known distinctly for the signature A.D. Martin Truss. The truss team has been designing, engineering, and building self-branded trusses since 1984. (For those of you who do not already own a tool belt and have a garage filled with dreamy power tools, the advantages of building with

engineered trusses are quick assembly and consistency, allowing builders to dry-in a structure in a shorter time frame.) Designer / engineer Vern Meredith was born and raised in Lander, graduating LVHS in 1975. He has been with A.D. Martin since 1993, as the lead engineering truss designer. “We have an extensive understanding of local building codes, snow and wind-loading, and we engineer specifically for the needs and climate of Fremont County. Because of our experience and expertise in this area, we design and engineer products that provide qualityaffordable results.” Original ties to Lander: The business founder and namesake, A.D. Martin, moved to Lander from Missouri in 1920 and sold horsedrawn farm equipment. He eventually moved

to Riverton to work for the Riverton Lumber Company, becoming coowner and retiring in 1953. Martin partnered with his two sons, Davis and Jack, to purchase the Noble Lumber company in 1954, forming the presentday A.D. Martin Lumber Company. In 1986 Davis and Jack’s two sons Mike and Joe purchased the company. Mike Martin and his son John now operate the company and a second location in Dubois was permanently established in its current main street location in 2006.
