SPACE A GOGO MISSION

Endlessness. Infinite. Forever. Space goes on further than we can even comprehend. We can see the light of a star millions of miles after it stops shining, its light traveling through space to reach us, to remind us that our world is not alone we are even made of stars, the same elements contained in those fiery orbs live in us. It is up to us to live up to our distant cousins. Whether it’s to infinity and beyond or it is happening in a galaxy far, far away, we must reach for the best in ourselves. To the stars.

GRETCHEN SOLINGER ATTEMPTS TO FURTHER MY BELIEF IN ALIENS The interview, the experience If the rules of evolution applied to humans the same as it did with all other living creatures, we wouldn’t exist. There is DNA in our body that isn’t in any other animal, that’s the spirit gene but that doesn’t make any fucking sense how can you say that, I mean, I guess, religious people say that, that’s what makes us different, god put that in us, who the fuck is god and how can we be for sure who god is? Okay thousands of people of the past believe in super similar things Eastern ancient places have the same thing: Gods are from the sky, life is eternal, life after death. That shouldn’t be assumed to be normal…Maybe theres something to it. DMT—what is most likely is that there is some sort of… parallel universe instead of a cellular physical basis, it’s, I don’t want to say spiritual, but yeah celestial, there’s no word for it because we don’t fully understand it yet. More recently even, govt, there’s no reason the govt would tell us about aliens, I mean, it would be fair if they did. Roswell—we can’t joke about it, “oh haha aliens that’s so funny”, something happened there and something was covered up. The newspaper put out they had recovered a smashed spaceship with four bodies but govt took it back. Crazy technology and space, after roswell we saw exponential advancements in technology. The internet, space travel, flighter pilots, newer airforce aircrafts, super crazy, stealth fighters that can’t be detected all of a sudden we have this technology. People tell me, “Oh you’re not giving humanity any credit”, 20 years all of a sudden we have insane crazy shit? Most of our advancements are because of aliens? How do they get their info to us?

8

Eisenhower—met with aliens, there’s no reason the govt would tell us though. In the 60’s, movies about aliens were created to make us think they were ridiculous to believe in. People didn’t give a fuck before Roswell. If they did, it was serious, not a joke. The day the earth stood still, close encounters—airforce involved in creating those movies, possibly because they were using a survivor from roswell. There’s a theory that an Alien stayed around (post roswell) and lived in a govt base and gave us info about shitloads of stuff, and we gained his knowledge. Some people also believe there are 9-10 species we talk to or allow airspace to, Eisenhower met with one alien and said you can have free access to our airspace and abduct anyone you want but you have to give us technological information, he was a general president coming out of the war and trying to protect and make the US the most powerful. Back to monkeys and evolution. Why would we lose our hair? If you think about it. Theories say we started in Africa in the heat and lost our hair and then moved to cold places and made coats but monkeys live in africa and have hair so why would monkeys lose their hair? Ancient texts of india, sumerians, they all say gods come from the sky, in the indian texts-> their bible says how gods had insane nuclear wars, they give detailed descriptions of “metal flying chariots”, larger ones and smaller ones, warring gods, huge explosions, “shadows of elephants” like hiroshima, everyone tried to wash themselves off but weeks later their hair was falling out, teeth, nails, --radiation poisoning obviously, that’s IN THEIR BIBLE “oh that’s just a story!” what the fuck!

The earth’s, the UN?

Do you think we’re aliens and we came here?

What makes that document different than scifi anything else?

We are super similar but not exactly a genetic replication, they manipulated our shit and the story of adam and eve got started because we were created out of their image, just like what the bible says. The entire sumerian text is genesis—all the stories are in sumerian text. I think it’s true I think they wrote things down because they happened I don’t think they wrote it as like a “what to do”. “The bible should be translated loosely, we’re not suppose to interpret it.” Why would people write super abstract stories as a metaphor on how to live your life? We don’t do that now. There’s also a theory that we (aliens and humans) are exactly the same and that humans are, the human form, is not specific to Earth, there have been humans around longer, when people talk about angels they aren’t usually an alien they’re humans with wings. I mean why not? Why should we ignore this?

You can’t trust anything on the internet, you can’t trust anything. The thing that made it different than a movie about aliens Is that theres a chance that this is true

Why arent we connected now?

In 5th grade my best friend went to kmart and when she came to

The US. The US is hindering their ability to communicate with us? There must be a contract with the aliens. You can’t deny that there are millions of UFO sightings. There are just so many all the time all around the world. Recently there have been so many shows about aliens and UFOs. Why do you think the govt allows these tv shows to exist? They are trying to get us used to the fact that aliens exist. There have been so many alien movies recently too.

Well, it started a lot when they made the show Ancient Aliens. I felt like it was kinda ridiculous but a lot of that show you have to take out and be like this is fucking ridiculous but a lot of the things from the ancient societies match up and you can’t be like its hard to say this can’t possibly be true at all. But really I think it was from those ancient indian texts, I read those and I was jaw to the ground. The Lacerta Files are fucking crazy. That’s what started it.

Transcribed by Brittany Long

Do you remember what your first memory of being interested in aliens is? Do you have one?

Since this experience its been an integral part of your life and it’ll stay that way forever? Because some of the things I’ve read about have made me a more aware person. Because the lacerta files made me feel like a stupid human who is so little and so concerned with my life I wanna be more aware of everything. Life doesn’t end it goes on forever. Life is huge and small. Have you had any first person experiences with aliens?

Part of it is that our govt is suppressing it.

Do you want to live in space? No I don’t think so, I’d be too scared. I would hang out with aliens. I wanna be different. I don’t wanna be just another stupid human, but I don’t want them to kill me right away. I thought about it. If they had to either artificially inseminate me or kill me, I’d do it. The materials to make DMT, or the supposed “spirit molecule”, are in all living and growing things. It seems like everything has to have some sort of spirit. Something was talking about how we’re all humans but there are different planets of reincarnation, on a planetary or galactic scale, if you’re good you go to a better universe or better world if you’re bad you go to a worse one Where’s earth rank? Low, super low Can you predict a time when we’ll be allowed to know about aliens? If not dec. 21, 2012, very soon, the media is showing a resurgence

A UNIVERSE WITH INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

12

Space. The holder of the mysteries of the universe. It is an endless frontier full of possibilities and wonder. There is a theory floating about the corners of the web that space is truly a boundless zone, with no real beginning or an end. Through various works of science fiction and other sources of media, space has captured the imagination of millions of humans for centuries. But with the idea that it is ever expanding, we may never truly explore it all. It took human civilization until the 20th century to actually enter space, and it will most likely take us many more if we ever want to visit another planet. Scientists and writers alike have wondered and pondered the possibility of life on other planets. Recently, we have even discovered another planet about 300 light-years away that resembles Earth in both size and terrestrial content. There’s most likely life on other planets, but none of the civilizations of the galaxy have probably survived long enough for there to be inter-system travel in a reasonable time. The image of the planet that we discovered was likely over 1 million years old. The light took a long time to reach us, and therefore, chances are it might be in a completely different state than we are lead to believe. It could be destroyed, very advanced, or remain the same. The fact is, until we can acquire vehicles that can go FTL (Faster Than Light), we will never discover all that we can about the universe and its’ mysteries. We can only hope that one day we might be able to travel to other planets and worlds instead of gazing upon them from below.

UNTITLED The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of “space” is “outer space”. Any time the discussion of travel to outer-space comes up I notice a feeling of panic in my body. The question of “How cool would it be to be an astronaut?” (my answer – NOT COOL), or “would you ever want to go to space?” (my answer – HELL no!). People are surprised by my passionate response, and sometimes confused. When they ask why, I never have a clear answer, but I have been reflecting on it and I think I have a small piece of it figured out.

Some Person

It has something to do with not being able to avoid how small our place in the universe really is. Being way out in space you would be literally and physically faced with it. Floating out there in zero gravity feels like I would be out of control. No security or anything to grab on to. Seeing Earth as tiny as a marble really zeros in on the fact of how small our little world is. These thoughts always lead me to think about ego, and how the open space (in one’s mind or physically in nature) helps to quiet the ego, and I think that “outer space” would be the most open place I can think of, and of course ego feels threatened by that. My favorite Buddhist teacher has a quote that explains it really well: by Chogyam Trungpa. Found on “http://www.beezone.com/ Trungpa/fiveskandas.html” http://www.beezone.com/Trungpa/fiveskandas.html When a gap or space occurs in our experience of mind, when there is a sudden glimpse of awareness openness, absence of self, then a suspicion arises: “Suppose I find that there is no solid me? That possibility scares me. I don’t want to go into that”. That abstract paranoia, the discomfort that something may be wrong, is the source of karmic chain reactions. It is the fear of ultimate confusion and despair. The fear of the absence of the self, of the egoless state, is a constant threat to us. “Suppose it is true, what then? I am afraid to look.” We want to maintain some solidity but the only material available with which to work is space, the absence of ego, so we try to solidify or freeze that experience of space. Ignorance in this case is not stupidity, but it is a kind of stubbornness. Suddenly we are bewildered by the discovery of selflessness and do not want to accept it; we want to hold on to something. The second thing I think of when I hear the word space is “I need some space”. Who likes to hear that?!

Dear Pluto, Dear Pluto, I spoke to Saturn last night, and she told me you had lost your title. I am sorry to hear that! Knowing how much you enjoyed being a planet, I am guessing the loss hurts. It hurts us equally. Please accept my sympathy. I would enjoy conversing about what you are planning next. Best regards, Neptune Dear Pluto, I was surprised and saddened when I heard the bad news, pal. Please accept my sympathy. I don’t know how you are feeling about leaving, but I do know change is stressful. I hope everything is going well for you. I will be thinking about you as you go through this transition. Saturn Pluto, I am sorry you lost your job in the recent cuts. It was always a pleasure to work with you, and I will miss seeing you at the Tuesday meetings. You are always positive and professional. If you need a dose of praise and support, give me a call. I will be glad to tell you how terrific you are, any time. I hope this will not shake your confidence. You are an extremely talented dwarf planet and Kuiper is lucky to have you. Take care. Uranus

Hi, Pluto. I just heard you were demoted, and I wanted to wish you good luck. I enjoyed working with you over the past 70 years.I know you were expecting this, so the situation was not a surprise. Still, it’s a change, and I hope you will get through it well. I want to stay in touch. I have made a note in my calendar to call you next lunar month. Until then, Venus

Britney Long

Dear Pluto, I wish you much success in your next endeavor, whatever you choose to do. Your skills are many. You have much to offer; small, blue, and cold. Best of luck, Mars Dear Pluto, I am sorry to hear you were eliminated, and I am hoping this situation turns out to be a wonderful opportunity for you. Although change can be difficult, sometimes change is the best thing that can happen to us. I trust your future will be bright! The Sun Dear Pluto, I know we weren’t very close but I will miss you. We’re incomplete without you. Hopefully, you find happiness in the Kuiper belt. It’s a little cold but you’ll fit right in! Sincerely, Mercury Pluto, I feel partially responsible for your downgrade and I just wanted to apologize and send my commiserations. There’s nothing like getting your title stripped away after 70 years of loyalty. Of course, I’ll never know how that feels. Anyways, sorry! Earth

The Sun spent Sunday thinking about how it envied Pluto, mainly because Mercury spent Monday talking non-stop about how much it envied Jupiter. The Sun quickly got tired of being the center of attention, and told Mercury to shut up. Venus spent the last week wishing it was Neptune. Earth is far too busy with budding forms of life to care any of the other planets. Mars envies Earth and misses the long gone inhabitants. Jupiter doesn’t envy anyone, and spent Tuesday bullying Mercury because Mercury is tiny as fuck. Mercury then cried the rest of the week. Venus is arrogant as hell, or at least that’s what Neptune says. Uranus told Earth that Saturn’s rings were the result of a botched beauty procedure. Everyone hates Uranus because Uranus is a gossipy whore. Neptune is secretly envious of Venus, and wants to be the hot one for a change, but would never tell anyone. Pluto was recently arrested and put on probation, due to unfiled immigration papers. Pluto has had trouble dealing with the separation and wishes just once, just one fucking time; Pluto could be the center of attention just like the Sun. Two hours ago the Sun finally got sick of the drama and went supernova

SPACE MOVIE REVIEWS

EVENT HORIZON (1997) Contrary to popular belief, in space people can hear you scream. Unfortunately the people who can hear you scream are only the handful of people dying on your spacecraft with you, the sorry bunch close enough to pick up your SOS signal, or the person who’s making you scream. And, as learned through watching space horror, screaming in space does not end well. If you enjoy following the struggle of various space travelers, though some struggles end in vain, then perhaps Event Horizon is a worthy investment. This 1997 movie stars Laurence Fishburne (Matrix) and Same Niel (Jurassic Park) as they travel deep into space after receiving a distress signal from a prolific spacecraft that went missing year ago. The once missing ship had the ability to fold space to jump from one point to another for super-fast long distance travel, and when it jumped it ended up going somewhere where no one thought, and no one wanted. And as the rescue crew finds out, when the ship came back it brought something with it. As a person who enjoys cinematic fictional violence I got more than enough in Event Horizon. This is also the film I’ve seem the reaction of being decompressed for space travel without wearing the proper equipment in. Imploding eyes in zero-g looked pretty awesome in this movie.

22

PANDORUM (2009) Want to get confused? Pandorum can do that for you. Get on board with a crazy crew of people convinced they’re the only humans left on a giant ship carrying humans to populate a new planet. Supposedly all other humans either were murdered or evolved as a result of the super long journey. In the end, the shared delusion of the crazy crew is shattered but you end up wondering how it began and how everyone could be seeing the same illusions.

SUNSHINE (2007) The Sun won’t last forever, you know, and so does director Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire). This story sends a heroic group of engineers, scientists, and astronauts into space with the rest of the world’s explosives in order to re-ignite the dying Sun. The previous attempt failed when the ship was lost. Along the teams way they spot the missing ship and decide 2 Manhatten-size bombs are better than one, however, something from the other ship gets on board with them. The screw begins to get killed off and the mission to save the Sun is threatened. With no help will they be able to defeat this entity and complete the mission?

DRACULA 3000 (2004) Get ready for a laugh. Dracula in space! If you thought Jason X was enjoyable (in a funny pathetic kind of way), Dracula 3000 will be enjoyable. Space crew of the ship Mother III flies around salvaging junked ships and stations. They happen upon the vessel Demeter and hop aboard to take a look around only to find the ship is full of sand-filled coffins. Mysteriously Mother III becomes undocked to Demeter and the crew find themselves trapped on the scrap ship. Not only that, but it turns out that the ship is also carrying a vampire, Orlock. Conveniently the captain of Mother III happens to be a descendent of the vampire hunter Van Helsing. Convenient right? However. The Captain ironically ends up defeated by the vampire, and the remaining two crew members send the ship on a course to self-destruct. So defeat this evil they must make a sacrifice.

Francesca Narvaez

The movie does, however, show off the ship well. Unlike many other space horror films that show pretty much one part of the ship and a shot of the whole ship form the outside, Pandorum’s story drives the characters all over the ship, giving a sense of how large the damn thing actually is.

This film was amazing. The cast seemed solid and the main story wasn’t what I expected. This movie was more like a space drama horror. I don’t know another film at this time that has so much of the human element in space. The relationships between characters ended up driving the story as much as the action. If you dig space horror and your partner is into chick flicks, check out Sunshine.

The direct-to-DVD movie ends with the last two crewmembers about to get it on before they explode. Definitely good for a laugh. Though the movie is from 2004 and set in the future, it looks super dated. The makeup on the female leads makes them look like groupies from the 80’s. Where did this movie go wrong? How about where didn’t it. Viewer be warned; don’t go into watching this with a serious attitude. Know that the movie is just a big mess and have fun with it.

OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD MOVIES: Pitch Black, Chronicles of Riddick, Doom, Predators, Jason X, Starship Troopers, Apollo 18, Ghosts of Mars, Mission to Mars, Serenity, Solaris, Dune, Titan A.E., Star Trek, Zathura, WALL-E.

WHAT IT ALL MEANS, ANYWAYS Anxious waiting. That’s the words Steven often used to describe life in the laboratory. On his metal chair, with his elbows resting on his metal desk. The clanging footsteps of the maintenance staff and other researchers on the metal floor. But most of all, the humming of the engine was the tipping point. The constant buzzing it produced, low and constant. The other staff seemed to be used to it, as should Steven by now. The ship’s medical staff said that you stop hearing it after a few months or so on the ship, like a heartbeat, always beating inside the chest without rest, until one day, it stops. The lights flickered above his head. Steven couldn’t think, except for, “Enough research for now.” Moving about the ship was like a child’s playground at times. He exited the door and walked through the narrow corridors. They were so narrow that two could only pass through if they turned sideways. “God forbid there was anyone fat on the ship,” he thought. Steven came to a crossroads. He stopped and leaned against the metal plating of the wall. To the right were the sleeping quarters for his team, and their families. They should all be in rest cycle at this time, if they were normal at all, unlike Steven. He looked down that right hallway, and saw the change in feeling from the décor. The metal walls where he stood, grated and utilitarian, changed into a painted beige. And the lights, cold and flickering LEDs, became natural yellow. At the next hallway junction he could even see a potted plant placed in the corner. The ship staff ’s attempt at being home-makers, that little plant. “How far it must feel, from home.” Steven thought. Or was the small pot all the plant had ever known? Steven’s generation wasn’t the first to have some live their entire lives without touching solid earth. He turned away from that warm way home, from a sleeping wife and daughter.

26

Steven instead went right, towards the ship’s cafeteria. A nice walk before sleep, to clear his thoughts, sounded nice to him. Steven always did think he thought too much, ironically thinking then about that. He wasn’t particularly active, had only been to the sports center a few times, and did not particularly bother himself with other distractions like movies or games. Only two people, asleep now, could make him play games, toys, and make believe. She was five now, and her favorite game was “family.” Steven would pretend to come home from working, and she would often take the role of faithful dog, ever since she’d seen an old movie. She’d bounce around on all fours, making bark noises, and wanting to play fetch. Steven had always thought it interesting, that her knowledge of dogs was limited to that extent. She’d never seen one. They hadn’t touched down at a colony since before she was born, and weren’t scheduled to for another year. Even then, the colony might keep dogs; they might not.

Steven’s gaze turned to his favorite sight on this trip. A brilliant green quasar, with three flickering stars close to the core. It will collapse soon, drawn in by the energy and mass of the quasar.

SPACE a go-go

2012

Sean Luse

Steven sat in the cafeteria, the most open room on the ship, with the ceilings far above his head, a nice change. There were numerous tables, with the chairs clustered around in different numbers. Some tables had only one chair. The cafeteria was located on the most outer starboard side of the ship, which allowed for Steven’s favorite part. The windows. On the other wall were four large windows, side by side. And through them, the vast mysteries of places that no man would ever go, and wild things no man might ever see, savefrom a distance. The multicolored tapestries of stars and cosmos, spills of brilliant reds and greens across a perfectly black backdrop. It hadn’t changed much, in the past few years. How could it? The things he was seeing were light years away, and unfathomably large. Much like an ant to an entire galaxy, it wouldn’t change until they reached the next colony, and warped from there. He missed the surface, the place he grew up in. The place he went to school, then college. The place where he’d look above himself and dream. Where every few years or so he’d run to the docks to watch a ship come in, or warp off. He was here now, in space.

Or rather, not soon. The image Steven was looking at had happened billions of years ago, now only reaching him, in this spot, so very much later. Who could have thought? That billions of years ago, when those three stars were being sucked into the energy mass, that a single man would stand, inside what must look like a tin can, and watch billions of years later. Steven knew all too well what had happened. The massive energy and masses of the stars, many many times larger than Earth’s sun, already had collided, creating an explosion on the galactic scale. The heat was so incredible the hydrogen of the stars had entered fission, forming themselves back into the complex elements, they once decayed from. Helium and noble gases. Rare earth metals. Most importantly, carbon. The carbon would, no, had then been propelled across the galaxy, gathering and linking in simple carbon chains, maybe landing on or forming some planet, or simply drifting forever. The carbon that made landfall would gather in number, linking the simple chains together, creating mass and objects. And somehow, someway, against all odds, some of that carbon would combine with other necessary elements, and make something alive. Some single celled organism, which scientifically offers no advantage over being inanimate carbon. And another, and another. Over time spans unfathomable. And those organism would build upon themselves, ever changing and growing, until diverging into plant structure or animal. An atmosphere would form. Fish would develop out of early mollusks and simple collections of muscle and shellbone. The fish might leave the sea, and grow legs, and become reptiles. The animals might learn to create fire. That fire might take them to places unimaginable to them at the time. Those people, who came from stars. It was past time to return to his wife, Steven decided. He made his way towards the sleeping quarters, against the quietly humming engine, and the soft metal sounds of his footsteps. He hoped she wouldn’t wake up, but quietly let him in the warmth of the bed, and perhaps kiss her cheek, billions of years in the making.
