or Ryan and Marlin Hanson, the business of building runs generations deep. The brothers, who own construction company Hanson Land and Sea, follow in the footsteps of their father, a local builder, and their grandfather and great-grandfather who were property developers in mid-century California. The brothers’ early childhood was spent roaming the family’s Gambier Island property, which hosted a sawmill and a unique, hexagonally-shaped home, both established and built by their father, Lex. The sawmill served to process the felled timber used for Lex’s marine construction company and the homes he built and sold throughout his career. Both Ryan and Marlin fell into their father’s footsteps, their introduction to building coming from hands-on experience. “My dad would always build these houses, sell them, then do it again, and we’d be dragged along for the ride… we’d have to plaster walls and stuff,” laughs Marlin. As adults, Ryan continued with marine construction while Marlin branched off, working in land-based building.

However, the Hanson family ties are strong, and the brothers would often work together. Eventually, the two decided to formalize their business, working together for five years, catering mainly to marine construction clients. But with their combined experience in marine and land construction, they decided to refocus. Ryan sold the first business and Hanson Land and Sea was born on an equal partnership about five years ago. They offer both types of construction as well as custom milling—all with a decidedly signature style. No project better represents the company’s approach than Marlin’s home, and it’s fair to say that Hanson Land and Sea’s aesthetic goes much deeper than mere preference. “I designed this house in terms of the shape,” Marlin explains, “but the
rafters, the beams, the log, the plaster walls, it’s what my dad’s always done.” The 1200 sq-ft home feels much larger than its size, the airiness due, in part, to soaring ceilings and walls of windows. It also has a green roof, complete with irrigation system. Marlin and his family hope to grow strawberries on it next year. The whole home has a Scandinavian meets West Coast feel. Natural materials abound, thick timber beams support the roof and add rustic beauty. A 70-year-old, 2nd growth fir log runs the full length of the home. Salvaged from logged land behind their property, the log is a testament to how the brothers view their resources, as ‘treasure’ to craft into something beautiful. The company uses local timber,
incorporating materials and design that complement our West Coast surroundings. As exampled in Marlin’s home, cedar shingles, large wooden beams and milled surfaces are often used, inside and out. The brothers are reticent to use buzzwords or strict architectural categories to describe their work but much of their inspiration comes from old houses, old timber barns and what is available from the land. Ryan explains, “I don’t think there’s an exact word, though we often use ‘timeless’”. “And it has to last a long time,” stresses Marlin. Hanson Land and Sea operate two sawmills, one of which is custom made and is the largest of its kind in Canada. Massive local fir, cedar, hemlock and cypress have run through the mills, the resulting planks stack neatly around the shop. “It’s really rewarding being able to see a tree go from falling it to being a piece of furniture or a house. I think that’s fairly unique in the industry. We like being able to do the milling, the design, the building, the finishing. It spreads us out a lot but we have lots of fun,” Ryan says. In the middle of the shop sits an oversized outdoor slab table of old growth fir, ready for the next step. Nearby, a sophisticated indoor dining table of yellow cedar awaits one more coat of varnish. Hanson Land and Sea not only builds larger structures—homes, auxiliary buildings, decks, docks—but also makes smaller >> DOLF VERMEULEN PHOTOS

pieces, like these two tables. You might have experienced their furniture and interior work if you like Italian food— Ryan, Marlin and their team did the renovations at Buono Osteria in Lower Gibsons. From the tables to the bar, from the ceiling to the private party room’s sliding barn door, practically every surface was designed and crafted by Hanson Land and Sea. The relationship was a collaborative one, with the Buono team providing direction, then trusting the Hansons to their expertise.
A Timeless Way of Building
“They knew the kind of shapes they wanted, we worked on the aesthetic decisions together, and our team suggested a lot of the materials because we’ve worked with them in the past,” describes Marlin. So who does what? Thankfully, the brothers have complementary skills and, having worked together for so long, they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Ryan is more of a big picture guy, the one to get projects started and keep momentum from project to project, whereas Marlin handles the details and keeps their 11-person crew focused on the projects at hand. However, both enjoy design, a trait which comes from their father. “That’s our favourite part,” explains Marlin, “the space, figuring out the proportions, it comes from our dad and working with our families. That’s always been important, how a space looks and feels.” As Hanson Land and Sea continues to build on their family legacy, one wonders if Ryan and Marlin’s kids will step into their parents’ shoes. It’s still a bit too early for their young children to run a saw, but the brothers don’t discount it for the future. What is certain is that every project strikes a balance of past and present, and honours the materials from the land they call home. www.hansonlandandsea.com - Angie Ishak

hen people walk by the Emerge Design studio in Sechelt, they can’t help but stop and peek in the windows. What attracts them is a light-filled sophisticated space, with material vignettes styled neatly on narrow shelves and lots of open, uncluttered work surfaces. Sometimes the public just walks in, intrigued, or industry creatives – tradespeople, artists – stop in to introduce themselves and pitch their work. Clients

sometimes drop in just to hang out. The Emerge office perfectly reflects the company’s ethos: creating beautiful spaces and facilitating interior design experiences for their clients that are transparent, collaborative and fun. Established by Principal Interior Designer Gwyntie van Tuyl Weswick 10 years ago, Emerge Design is a team of dynamic women who live and breathe interior design. Their passion is obvious: “We love design so much that we want everyone to love it too,” van Tuyl Weswick enthuses. Part of fostering that passion is their approach to the design process, especially in their relationships with clients. The team gets to know a client’s personality, inspiration, requirements and wishes, sometimes even meeting their families, or learning about their pets and favourite vacation spots. “Some of the details they share with us become the inspiration for the whole design,” explains Morgan Seeber, Emerge’s Associate Interior Designer. Clients are also welcome to stop by anytime and have their own access to their project’s material samples, plans, and notes. A client can independently show a tile sample to a friend, or pick up an upholstery swatch to mull over at home. “Renovations and builds can be incredibly stressful, so we really try to create an environment internally, as well as for our clients and the trades, that is as relaxed and enjoyable as possible,” describes van Tuyl Weswick. Emerge also provides a

comprehensive project package so that all involved have clear direction for every stage of a project. As a boutique studio, Emerge is able to ensure that every team member in the studio is familiar with every file. If van Tuyl Weswick is unavailable, Seeber will most likely have an answer, or Coordinator Natalie Chell can quickly find out the details, or Design Coordinator Jenna Fouillard can offer a familiar face. “It creates such a nice experience when clients come in that they know all our faces,” explains Fouillard. This attentive approach not only enriches client relationships but also brings the whole Emerge team a sense of pride and ownership over every project.

was the renovation of Dr. Emery Bland’s dental office in Gibsons. Emerge and Spani Developments worked together to tackle several unique logistical challenges: the office had to remain open throughout the entire process, they were doubling their square footage, and strict criteria had to be met because of dental equipment and healthcare standards. It was important that the design also honour the practice’s existing spirit. “One of the most important things for this project was maintaining the family feel that Dr. Bland’s parents had instilled,” describes van Tuyl Weswick. One of their kid-friendly solutions was designing a play area in the waiting room that is interactive and welcoming: kids can draw at the desk, display their artwork, or lay down on a kidsized bench if needed. The office is now imbued with an airy, contemporary West Coast feel, yet it retains the welcoming vibe that existed before. “We love the bright spaces that were created with all the windows, colours and materials that were implemented into the design,” says Dr. Bland. “It feels like we have stepped into the present and are set up for the future,” he continues. “The office was cozy and warm before the renovation and now we still get those feelings but with a fresh, bright and elegant twist.” While commercial spaces are where van Tuyl Weswick began, Emerge Design’s present clientele is predominantly residential. Homeowners Sheryl and Bob Warner were introduced to van Tuyl Weswick through their contractor Clark Hamilton. The Warners liked her right away and entrusted Emerge to overhaul their 1970’s family home in Sechelt into a modern, serene coastal haven. Gone is the green shag carpeting, the dark cabinets and the avocado green appliances. Now, the three-storey, 2800-square-foot house is filled with airy whites, pops of blue, contemporary furnishings and natural >>

”
Van Tuyl Weswick is a Registered Interior Designer. As such, she is well-versed in all aspects of the design process, from style and materials, to structural considerations, building practices and permitting. Emerge works with a lot of architects, engineers, and contractors. “We have a really good relationship with our trades,” reflects van Tuyl Weswick. ”Even when we work with new contractors, or vice versa, we try to make it an easy process getting to know us and developing an enjoyable time working together on site.” One project that required a truly seamless relationship with their tradespeople Sunshine Coast Homes & Decor Magazine • Fall 2019

finishes. The open layout on the main floor brings a sense of refined ease and showcases the ocean views beyond. Emerge also incorporated a selection of the homeowner’s special pieces, re-imagined to fit the new scheme: a boat porthole graces the door to the basement, a prized dresser is reworked into built-in storage in the master bedroom. New details such as intricate, custom-etched glasswork in a salmon motif welcomes guests by the front door, the glasswork continued in the kitchen island in a kelp motif. Everyday life is now a refreshing experience for the Warners. “It feels like we are living the West Coast dream in our newly-renovated home,” describes Sheryl. “We no longer feel like we are stuck in the 70’s … The heaviness and clutter have disappeared. The renovation has brought a lightness and tranquility into our lives.” “We want to create beautiful things for other people,” van Tuyl Weswick summarizes. “And I love that each project is completely different. Design is such a great challenge – it’s engaging, inspiring and I feel pretty fortunate to be in this industry.” With each renovation, redesign and relationship, Emerge Design is elevating the Sunshine Coast, one space at a time. www.emergedesign.ca - Angie Ishak

A BYGONE ERA BROUGHT BACK TO
LIFE
H
idden in Roberts Creek amid drooping cedars and towering firs sits antique weaving machinery in a purpose built 1500 square foot building. Reminiscent of the Industrial Revolution there’s an 1899 Charlesworth warper that brings together cotton threads that are then used on a somewhat more modern looking 1936 Dobcross shuttle loom. The machines are big, solid, alien creatures from a bygone era brought back to life by petite Pamela Magee. Owner and operator of Macgee Cloth Company, and a pharmacist by training, Magee is passionate about her new vocation: using antique looms to create beautiful blankets in the tradition of heirloom textiles. “When these looms came along, cloth became affordable,” she says. “Before, only wealthy people could have a nice piece of cloth.” Magee’s journey to founding her business began six years ago while on holiday in Spain. Through a friend, she had the opportunity to see an English Dobcross loom in action. “I just thought it was beautiful,” says Magee. “There aren’t a lot of things that wow you as an adult. It’s like magic.” Enamoured and ready for a new chapter in her life, the hunt to find her own loom began. She finally found one in a Welsh sheep field. “It was in a container and was all rusty,” Magee recalls. She found the warper “in an old messy building in Huddersfield [UK] and it’s probably the only one in existence.” Magee had them carefully taken apart and shipped by freighter to Canada, eventually reaching Roberts Creek by truck. Howard, an elderly gentleman who prefers to be known by his first name only, was instrumental in helping Magee set up her mill. “He worked in his father’s loom shed when he was a kid [in the UK] and his father taught all the mechanization and weaving to him,”

she says. “He helped me put [the machines] together and taught me a lot about weaving.” The next challenge was finding an electrical engineer to sort out how to power the English 400 volt three phase motors to run on North American 220 volt single phase electricity. Magee has had to learn not only how to operate the machines, but to maintain and repair them and so is learning how to weld. “They weren’t made in the throwaway period,” she says of the machines. “Everything on these was meant to be saved and you can’t replace them.” All this “extra learning” is part of Magee’s goal of creating a truly ethical enterprise. Her materials—organic cotton and lambswool—are carefully sourced. Her cotton fibres come from Hill Spinners in North Carolina who procure their raw cotton from Payne Farms in Texas. “Hemp and bamboo use a lot of water and chemicals,” says Magee. “Cotton, if it’s grown right, is really a beautiful fabric.” Payne Farms uses dry agriculture methods meaning they don’t irrigate, but rely on rain cycles and reservoirs. Hill Spinners use all natural dyes, ring spinning their cotton to create a very strong yet soft thread. “Air spinning is what they do now,” says Magee. “It’s wrapped with air like cotton candy. That’s why your T-shirts get holes in four months.” Her lambswool comes from Gledhill Spinners in England. “They’ve been spinning in this mill since 1777,” says Magee. The lambswool is spun to 21 microns making it soft and strong and sustainably produced. In addition, the employees of all these companies earn a living wage and get health benefits. “That was important to me,” she says. “I wanted everything to be ethical and transparent.”
says Magee, noting selvedge edges can only be made by a shuttle loom weaving a continuous weft thread, meaning the edges don’t need sewing or other finishing to prevent them from fraying. Though the blankets might be woven fairly quickly, there are two to three days of finishing work: washing, drying, de-linting, pressing them with a tailor’s iron, and sewing the fringe. The end result is a quality, warm and cozy, beautiful keepsake blanket. Once everything became operational, Magee started producing inventory and opened her online store in April 2019. Her blankets are also available at The Kube in Gibsons, The Slipper Factory in Sechelt and EarthFair Store in Madeira Park. Her blankets are unique, with changing and diverse patterns and colours, and she is also able to take custom orders. Macgee Cloth Company will be participating in the Art Crawl October 18-20 and Magee is very excited to be sharing her blankets and process with the community. “It’s the idea of craft, of having things made locally,” she says. “I’m able to know where every fibre came from and that’s a truly wonderful thing.” Visit macgeecloth.com for more information. - Anna Nobile
The blankets take about 40 minutes to weave on the shuttle loom. “Not counting setting up the creel, threading the warp, tying on the threads—we’ll pretend that’s not part of it,” Magee laughs. Another aspect of what makes Magee’s blankets so special are their true selvedge edge. “The thread wraps continually around as it passes [the edge],” Sunshine Coast Homes & Decor Magazine • Fall 2019

A
shley Kitchen has been the owner of ReDecor + Design in Sechelt for just four months, but she’s already bringing her unique vision to the shop. Kitchen moved to the Coast with her husband in August of 2018 so they could improve their quality of life. With its advantageous proximity to the city, the couple felt they could easily commute to work from the Coast. While working with a client in Vancouver’s Point Grey, Kitchen found the original ReDecor in Sechelt, then owned by Diane Nicholson. “We were at the tail end of his project and I needed some accessories for his kitchen,” recalls Kitchen. “I really wanted to support locals since I was here. I popped into Diane’s shop at the time and we started chatting.” The two women developed a friendly professional relationship, when one day Nicholson said she wanted to retire. “I’d always wanted a shop,” says Kitchen. “I saw myself
18
operating a little décor shop, being able to have a pottery studio, offering design services, and doing a little bit of everything. I tucked that dream away but when she mentioned she wanted to retire, alarm bells went off.”
Now that she owns and operates ReDecor + Design, she is bringing all her skills and vision to the store. She added + Design to the name to indicate that in addition to the décor shop, interior design and styling services
Kitchen graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Art from Emily Carr University in 2005 where she majored in pottery, hence the dream of having a pottery studio in the back of her shop. She realized early on, however, that making a living as an artist was going to be a challenge. While in her final semester at Emily Carr, she began earning her certificate in Interior Design at BCIT, giving her a wealth of skills once she was done with school. “They’re [Emily Carr] teaching you the elements of design, but also the elements of line, and colour and form and shape,” says Kitchen. “In interior design school, you do a bit of that, but there’s AutoCAD class & millwork class too. It’s a bit more structured.” Sunshine Coast Homes & Decor Magazine • Fall 2019
are also available. “I always like to start conceptually based,” says Kitchen, referring to design projects. “Does the client have a favourite colour? Do they like a particular texture? I can put together a concept package for them, some
colours and textures and get a general feel for what the project is going to look like. When it comes down to the end, in picking furniture and fabrics and stylings and art, I have all those connections as well.” The shop opened under Kitchen’s management on May 1, so her current focus is on putting her personal stamp on the store. She’s brightened up the shop and the inventory, still taking goods on consignment but also hunting for unique items on social media and online sites like Craigslist. She always looks for quality pieces and likes simple, clean lines, and using materials that are already there. “It’s the idea of repurposing and upcycling,” says Kitchen. “The age of the item is intriguing. And the story: Where did it come from? Whose was it? It’s an interesting part of the object.” Kitchen recounts the story of a woman who bought a yellow and orange mid-century cream and sugar set. “She said, ‘I may or may not use it but it reminds me of my mother and my childhood,’” says Kitchen. Achieving that balance between traditional pieces that spark memories and feelings with a more modern, contemporary look is
beachy, casual feel. It’s where we live,” she says. “It’s colourful and there’s a lot of texture. They want to bring the outside in.”
something Kitchen strives toward. “I think people enjoy that look and feel in their home,” she says. “Adding a vintage or character piece to go with their more modern furniture.” Her inventory changes regularly, includes vintage, new and recently loved pieces with repeat customers coming in twice a week looking for that special item. She’s noticed her customers are attracted to a “nautical,
Another draw for visiting the shop is the collection of original artwork displayed throughout the store. Kitchen re-designed the store’s layout to incorporate a gallery wall to feature one artist and hosts an opening reception on the first Thursday of the month. “I want to support artists,” she says. “They don’t have to be an established artist or maker. I just want quality.” Quality products, vintage pieces, modern lines, original artwork. Kitchen has managed to bring it all together at ReDecor + Design and she will be showcasing her collections during the Art Crawl October 18-20. “I do enjoy coming in everyday, changing things around,” she says. “To be able to be in the presence of really beautiful objects and help people find those things.” For more information visit us on Instagram @redecorsechelt. - Anna Nobile WE USE CSA-Z240 STANDARDS

he Seasoned Kitchen in Gibsons has all the necessities to make your holiday meals special, and the staff to assist you in making the right choices for your style of meal service. A popular kitchenware trend going on now is mixing and matching. From napkin colors to differing dinnerware, people are breaking up their sets, adding contrasting and complimentary tableware for an exciting dinner presentation. For fall, rich jewel tones and strong colors make brightening up your table setting easy. Adding small components like a great set of serving utensils or upgrading your cutlery with hotel quality pieces by Robert Welch add elegance to the table. A sharp carving knife makes all the difference says Karla (owner). Not only does it improve the look of your turkey slices, using a

sharp knife gives a clean cut that opens up the flavor of the turkey meat resulting in a more robust turkey taste. Turkey pans are split in 2 categories: thinner and thicker. Thin pans are only used in the oven and the drippings are removed for making gravy. The thicker pans that have a heat conductive core can be used in the oven or on top of the stove allowing you make your gravy straight in the roasting pan. Other turkey cooking accessories at the Seasoned Kitchen include brining bags, fat separators, twine, and meat thermometers. Upgrading to a thermometer that gives a precise internal temperature reading at the tip of the probe allows more control of the exact internal temperature of your meat. The Seasoned Kitchen has a wide selection of special kitchen utensils. For example, to make more room in your kitchen utensil drawer, they have a mashed potato utensil where the head folds down. Fan of popovers or yorkies? The Seasoned Kitchen carries a special pan that yields the highest popovers which will delight your crowd. Also included with the pan is a special recipe
honed over the years by Karla, so even if this is your first time making these holiday treats, success is almost guaranteed. Karla’s simple guide to a great evening of entertaining: • • • •
Have a few self-serve drink options for guests. This helps the host stay focused on the meal. Do as much preparation as possible beforehand. This helps keep the stress down and the day run smoother, which leaves more time to enjoy your company. The party always happens in the kitchen! Inevitably, guests always want to help. Create a small jobs list with clear directions beforehand so people can contribute. Don’t take the day too seriously. Enjoy the chaos, the crazy stories, loud noise, and the joys of a full house.
The long summer days may be dwindling but the delights of friends and family continue all year. The Seasoned Kitchen has beautiful dinnerware to make your table visually spectacular and the tools to help you make your meals easier and efficient, making this holiday season your best yet. www.theseasonedkitchen.ca - Natalie Findlay
Karla shares a tradition before everyone digs into her delicious Thanksgiving feast: everyone around the table states what they are grateful for over the past year. With different ages and life perspectives this ritual creates a beautiful connection to each other from a place of love. If the traditional dinner is not up your alley, Karla has found many people celebrate in their own unique way during holidays; themed dinners where guests bring dishes from around the world for example, and others celebrate with breakfasts instead of dinners.
Upcoming Events at The Seasoned Kitchen: • October will be their knife sharpening demo and complementary sharpening. • November is their annual open house which you won’t want to miss; it will be different from other years and Karla is really excited about this year’s event. • Sign up for their newsletter for further details.

The ART of
esigning a home’s interior can be fun. Whether furnishing a first apartment or a newly purchased family home, many people feel that the art they put on the walls of their homes is an expression of their individuality, and that a home isn’t truly a home until its interior reflects their personalities. Furnishing a home with art can be intimidating, especially for people doing so for the first time. But a few tricks of the trade can help men and women turn the interiors of their homes into spaces that reflect who they are. • Embrace your personal taste. Don’t hesitate to decorate your walls with art you like. When buying furniture for a home, it can make sense to follow certain rules. For example, parents of young children might want to purchase dark-colored furnishings that can hide stains. But no such rules should govern your choices of artwork. Art reflects the person who made it, but it also reflects the person who buys it, so buyers should embrace their personal taste when furnishing their homes with art. • Shop around. Thanks to the internet, billions of pieces of art, from tapestries to photographs to paintings, are at your fingertips. Comparison shopping can be fun and help
Buying Art for your home
novices discover their personal tastes. It also can be a great way to support artists. For example, 90 percent of all image royalties on art purchased from YourArtGallery.com goes directly to the artist, ensuring much of
Sunshine Coast Homes & Decor Magazine • Fall 2019
buyers’ money is going toward supporting the people responsible for the art they plan to hang in their homes. That can give people a greater sense of pride in their home’s decor. • Seek inspiration. If you’re unfamiliar with art, don’t hesitate to seek inspiration. Art is everywhere, from the hotels you stay in while traveling to the billboards you pass while driving to work to the local art museum near your home. If you’re uncertain of what you like, make a concerted effort to recognize the art you see but may not stop to notice each day. As you expose yourself to more and more art, you will gain a greater knowledge of what you like and dislike. Use that knowledge to inform your decisions when buying art for your home. • Switch things up. Your entire home does not need to follow a theme. If your taste in art is eclectic, embrace that and have different rooms throughout your home reflect your different tastes. This can give each room its own unique feel and make for a colorful home. The art people hang in their homes is a personal choice, and the process of finding that art can be fun and eye-opening. - Metro Creative

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING A BASEMENT APARTMENT
W
hether you’re hoping to move in a relative or generate some rental income, building a basement apartment is a great way to add space and value to your home. Make sure this investment is done right by keeping these factors in mind: Check local zoning laws and regulations. Building codes differ depending on where you live, so before you start any planning take time to research your local by-laws for fire safety, layout, sound-proofing and other requirements. If you want to make it a rental property, keep in mind that many municipalities require that basement apartments have a private, separate entrance. Decide on rooms and layout. Do you want to build a studio, one
26
bedroom or two? There are a few things that will affect your decision. A studio will be easier and cheaper to build, but you’ll be able to charge a higher rent if the unit has one or two bedrooms. Creating separate living and kitchen areas can also command a premium on the rental market or provide more convenience for your live-in guests. Make smart flooring choices. Carpet, LVT or laminate – whatever material you choose, be sure to use a subfloor. Not just an add-on to basement renovations, a subfloor is the foundation to a properly built basement apartment. Help protect your flooring investment from moisture and insulate against the cold concrete with Dricore subfloors. These premium panels have been designed with Sunshine Coast Homes & Decor Magazine • Fall 2019
Air Gap Technology to help keep basement floors dry, comfortable and cozy throughout the year. Consider some nice-to-haves. While none of these are mandatory, many nice-to-haves make everyday living easier and more comfortable for both your family and whoever is living in your basement, whether it’s an in-law or a tenant. Individually controlled heating and cooling mean no fighting over the indoor climate, and a separate laundry room will allow everyone to have privacy and convenience. Think about not just what you need for right now, but what you may want down the line – such as a dishwasher or shower. Find more information at dricore.com. www.newscanada.com

3 WAYS
TO CREATE
A CHIC AND COZY LIVING ROOM
T
he living room is a primary gathering spot for relaxing and entertaining with family and friends. Create a contemporary and cozy space for lounging that is chic yet livable. Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour and design expert, shares three ways to create the ultimate space. Create rhythm. Living rooms are often open to other areas of the home, which can make it challenging to select a colour palette that will work with adjacent rooms. Using different shades of the same colour is an effective way to define the area. “Deeper colours can bring coziness, which is ideal for the living room. Choose a stronger colour for living rooms paired with a neutral, or paler version for connecting spaces. A deep grey like Kendall Charcoal HC-166 pairs well with a lighter shade like Metropolitan AF-690.” Think beyond the walls. Consider painting furniture, window trims or ceilings in a bolder colour if your walls are neutral. Opting for neutral hues throughout the space with bolder or deeper hues to emphasize millwork, ceilings and window framing will create a feeling of harmony throughout your home. “Be sure to use appropriate premium quality products when painting these surfaces,” says Grech. For example, premium paints like Benjamin Moore Regal Select would be ideal for painting ceilings. Luxe layers. Nothing says cozy quite like a plush sofa with oversized pillows and throws. Play around with different textures to establish a chic and comforting look and feel. Layering luxe fabrics that are rich in texture, like velvet and faux fur, adds an instant dose of sophistication to your space. www.newscanada.com

FALL CLEAN-UP TIPS for your home and yard
A
s the cooler weather hits and the garden growing season ends, getting your home organized inside and out is a must. Here are some easy fall clean-up tips:
• For the yard, trim back overgrown and dead limbs in your hedges to protect them for the winter. Don’t forget to trim your trees, especially those close to the house, garage or shed. • Clear old plants and weeds from your garden bed or pots to make it easier for spring planting and keep insects at bay. If not using winterized pots, bring them indoors. • Clear leaves from the lawn, aerate and consider a fall fertilizing. • Decks and garden furniture will need a good cleaning and, if appropriate, staining. Don’t forget to properly store cushions and outdoor tablecloths so that they can be used again next season. Garden tools also need a good cleaning or wipe down before storing for the winter. • Moving inside, plan and prepare before you start. Make sure you have reusable boxes and bags on hand and create some storage space indoors or out. If outside, make sure the space is sheltered. • Organize room by room. When swapping out seasonal clothes in your closet, take some time to make sure you still need or use each item. If not, recycle or donate it. • Keep in mind that you can donate unwanted clothing, textiles and small household items, such as small garden tools, instead of throwing them out. Charitable organizations like Diabetes Canada are always looking for donations. You can donate your wares at one of their donation bins or schedule a home pickup at declutter.diabetes.ca.
