“How many people would be coming by air to that airport once it’s expanded and millions have been spent,” he asked. “This is an absurd situation. It makes no sense.” Mummenhoff’s latest ads have added a new element: he now is specifically endorsing Bruce Milne for mayor. Mummenhoff has nothing against candidate Christine Younghusband, but said former mayor Milne is obviously the more experienced of the two. ‘Unbelievable’ Another campaign, featuring large display ads saying in huge block letters, “Mayor Henderson is unbelievable,” and “Wonderfull,” was placed by registered third-party sponsor Marc Nixon. Nixon admits his problems with the District were initially motivated by an ongoing land dispute over beach access he’s been denied from his property on Nestman Road in Sechelt. But he said his subsequent dealings with bureaucrats and the mayor prompted him to lay his money down to speak his mind. “My intent with [the ads] is just to make people think,” Nixon said. “That’s all.” He said future ads he’s placing might endorse specific council candidates who’ve supported him.

When asked for comment about the advertisements Nov. 3, Henderson said it was typical of the tone of this campaign. “There seems to be a penchant for innuendo, using wild allegations and empty rhetoric,” Henderson said. He said the people behind the third-party advertisements don’t come to public events and debate with him directly. “They would sooner stay behind the scenes and throw rocks,” said Henderson. “I call on them, come on out. Let’s sit down and talk in public.” Henderson has written a defence of his three years in office, which he’s called “Facts over Fiction,” and posted it on his re-election website. Henderson’s mayoral opponents were of two minds on the ad campaigns. “There’s a huge amount of anger over the incumbent mayor and council and it’s widespread throughout the community,” said Milne. Many of the criticisms Milne has levelled at Henderson also are specifically mentioned in Mummenhoff’s ads. But Milne said he doesn’t agree with all that’s being alleged, or the way it’s being expressed. “Some of these people are taking out third-party ads be-

Two people behind a pair of highly critical pair of thirdparty advertising campaigns for the Sechelt municipal vote say they’ve never had anything to do with politics before, but were motivated by the issues and personalities in this election. Sechelt businessman Uwe Mummenhoff is among a group called Vote For Change, which has spent thousands of dollars on display advertisements in Sunshine Coast newspapers, with content that pulls no punches. “Restore the integrity of Sechelt public office,” “Challenge secrecy,” No more back door deals,” “Stand against bullying tactics,” one ad reads, along with several other allegations of questionable behaviour. “I cannot understand why [incumbent Mayor John Henderson] would govern this small community in such a dysfunctional way,” Mummenhoff said in an interview. Mummenhoff said he was particularly critical of the alleged mistreatment of district staff. “Good practices will attract talent and human resources, and will keep them longterm, not just through revolving doors,” he said. Mummenhoff also believes the plans for airport expansion are wrong-headed.

Letter of the Week

Talk of civil disobedience

With local elections imminent, The Local is right to draw our attention through its Nov 6 front–page headline, quoting Donald Gordon of Voters Taking Action on Climate Change, Big Coal:“The last battleground.” Ignoring community consultation, arrangements are well under way to ship US mined coal in open-top barges on the Salish Sea for storage, while awaiting shipment to Asia, at Texada Island.US environmental laws prevent coal transportation along the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California because of the proven damaging effects coal deployment inflicts on our health and environment. Chief Calvin Craigan, it seems, is exceptional among local politicians in leading the opposition to carrying US mined coal through the coastal waters of the Salish Sea.Along with Donald Gordon and other well -informed presenters at the forum in the Sechelt First Nation’s Band Hall, Chief Craigan made it clear that action to stop the coal barge initiative is a pressing priority in the face of willful indifference at federal and provincial levels of government. Not only is open-barge coal transit decidedly hazardous for our health and destructive of the local environment, coal as fossil fuel is a major factor in climate change world-wide.Tragically, evidence-based confirmation of this global trend and its disastrous effects is side-lined by a profit-driven imperative to dig up as much coal as possible while there is still a demand from countries like China. Too bad the political class at all levels of government is unwilling to impose necessary environmental protection measures. In an era of escalating de-regulation and diminished democracy, our politicians merely pay lip service to environmental concerns. No wonder a call for civil disobedience from the Forum on Coal Hard Facts at the Sechelt First Nation’s Band Hall drew spontaneous applause.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Whose quality of life?

I got a flyer in the mail for John Henderson who declared him to be “the Right Change”. Um…he is the Mayor. He is what people want change from. He claims to want to protect quality of life in Sechelt yet he’s in bed and tucked up to his chin with developers trying to get away with a 1,500 home mega-resort on the road to Sandy Hook (he’s one of the owners). We already can’t sell our homes. Houses are on the market for years and he figures we need another 1,500 of them plopped around a golf course to compete with ours? We are nervous about having enough water to supply our current population but he wants to bring in 4,5006,000 people (a couple with 1-2 children in each of his proposed homes) and a golf course that needs watering. He wants to protect quality of life here yet he plans to squeeze those 6,000 people onto our sweet two lane Sechelt Inlet Highway so we can enjoy traffic jams just like the big city, and to crowd our grocery stores, parking lots, schools etc. Nobody questions his guys on council. You try, you get slammed down. Public input is welcome…after they vote secretly on the issue. His is the opposite of a transparent government it’s opaque, it’s dark…. I’m voting Milne who was Mayor in the 90’s…who ran unopposed until he retired and came out of retirement because people begged him to come back and fix this mess that we need to change. The mess that Henderson and his minions made. Laurel Ennis, Sandy Hook

This portrays a serious misunderstanding of democratic government, of which one essential component is a strong opposition. The result. A toxic atmosphere in a diverse community. This vastly trumps the Mayor and Council’s achievements. I will vote for candidates who promise to provide unified leadership. Maurice Egan, Sechelt

‘Mud-slinging gets old’

Over the past months and especially in most recent weeks, you’ve heard a few people call the Mayor some pretty horrible names, defame his character and call his honesty into question. This negative campaigning based on creating fear has unfortunately proven quite effective in the U.S., for example. As the saying goes, “A lie unchallenged often becomes the truth” and this is exactly what these people want to see happen in our peaceful town. But I think voters are getting tired of this style of playing politics. This mudslinging is getting old and it doesn’t reflect the kind of community we want. For this reason, I won’t support a candidate who is linked to negative campaigning. We deserve better. I’m asking you to choose a clean alternative and send a clear message that Sechelt and its citizens will not be manipulated by these types of schoolyard tactics. Adam Hammond, Halfmoon Bay

The trust issue: Milne & Younghusband take on the Sechelt Mayor

The three candidates for mayor of Sechelt went toe-totoe on the issue of trust at a Friday forum, with both challengers suggesting incumbent John Henderson and the District Council have brought municipal government into disrepute. When asked what were the biggest challenges facing the next mayor, both Bruce Milne and Christine Younghusband said re-establishing trust was at the top of the list. “It’s the number-one issue facing the community and facing council,” Milne told the Sechelt Chamber of Commerce luncheon audience at the Sechelt Gold and Country Club. “One of the decisions you’re going to have to make is how that trust is going to be rebuilt, and who is best to do it.”

Younghusband shared that view. “People have bad feelings out there. People are angry. People are mistrustful,” she said. Henderson agreed trust was, “probably the core of the campaign.” But he accused Milne and others of making it an issue. “There’ve been wild allegations in Mr. Milne’s advertisements, there’ve been wild allegations and empty rhetoric from other so-called thirdparty advertisers, who only in the last week or so have declared they are in fact supporting Mr. Milne.” “We have work to do on trust,” Henderson added, but said, “the great number of people in this community trust this council.” Milne later fired back that his criticisms of Henderson’s

administration were factual. “Every single statement in every single advertisement that our campaign has put out is backed with facts,” said Milne. “There is not a single statement among them that is rhetorical.” ‘Learned from mistakes’ When asked how the public perception of the government could be improved, Henderson admitted there had been missteps in the past three years. “We’ve made mistakes, and we’ve learned from them. That’s the best you can ask of anybody,” he said. “We’ve done a lot in the past year on outreach, and apparently it’s not enough from some people’s point of view. I’m certainly prepared and eager to do more.” Younghusband responded to the question saying the

know. They simply don’t know,” he said. Henderson countered that he would “stay with the positive,” despite the knocks against him. “I’m tired of hearing allegations of fiscal impropriety. They don’t exist,” he said. He said the priority challenge in his view was jobs, which were “the cornerstone of everything we’re talking about.”

relationship between council and District staff could be better, and she would work toward that. Milne said there had been “turmoil” among the staff, with more than 60 per cent leaving. “I’d ask you to talk with anybody who’s left [their job] in the District in the last three years,” said Milne. “They’ll burn off your ears on what staff morale and the actual practices are.” The candidates were asked what they saw as the most important issues facing the next mayor and council and Younghusband said she questioned the viability of a potential airport expansion. She added that she was concerned about the cost of upkeep for the new sewage treatment plant, and said that “bad feelings” around Sechelt Innovations, the council’s economic development corporation, needed to be resolved. Milne cited economic development as the biggest challenge, while the second was mending relations with staff. “You cannot run an organization with that kind of turnover, regardless of what the reasons might be,” he said. Milne named budget transparency as another priority. “We’re told continually that the books are in very good shape. People don’t

WONDERFULL!

-----------------------------------------------------“Frankly, if this municipality doesn’t want medical marijuana, I don’t give a s--t,” said Councillor Chris Moore in the Vancouver Sun when he and Councillor Tom Lamb were interviewed about a “Conflict of Interest” because of their voting in favour of Marijuana “grow-ops” while they were both involved in the Marijuana business. They both sought legal counsel at taxpayers’ expense adding to the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent for legal services which are far, far and away higher than the average municipality! Councillor Moore is now Sechelt’s Deputy Mayor! Christine Younghusband is a School Trustee for the next 4 years by acclamation and wants to be elected as Mayor of Sechelt. We wonder which “side” she would choose between the taxpayers and the Schools or would she withdraw from any discussion or vote on the matter, thus leaving us with a “part time” Mayor and a “part time” School Trustee. Mayor Henderson, who is involved in the purchase of the Silverback property, voted in favour of a new zoning bylaw on the land but then said he would not vote on the Silverback re-zoning again. We wonder if he feels that Council already knows what he wants and he therefore he doesn’t need to vote again or does he feel this might be a “Conflict of Interest”? We wonder if “Conflict of Interest”

exists or should we just not care anymore?

The four candidates running for the Roberts Creek seat on the Sunshine Coast Regional District Board of Directors met with a full house of curious voters who braved an evening of hard rain to hear them speak Nov. 6. Barbara Hague, David Kelln, Mark Lebbel and Hans Penner, who are competing to replace retiring, nine-year “Area D” incumbent Donna Shugar, fielded more than a dozen questions from moderator Scott Avery and from the audience of about 125 at Roberts Creek Hall. The candidates were challenged about everything from recycling to their skills at conflict resolution. The four were asked early on about the effects of the landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision in the Tsilhqot’in First Nation case, which established land title for natives in their territories. All candidates agreed that the SCRD must continue to agitate for improved ferry services. “The Sunshine Coast Regional District must be a loud and constant voice for Coasters and grass-root organizations demanding lower fares and better schedules,” said Penner. Both Lebbel and Penner warned about the looming prospect of medical marijuana cultivation businesses moving into Roberts Creek, and agreed the potential zoning issues around it will likely generate a great deal of controversy. The subject arose in the context of a 20-minute discussion about the Goldmoss Gallery rezoning, an issue which has preoccupied residents in it's neighbourhood. All supported the Lower Road gallery in principle, but there was no clear consensus on what to do next about the complex of problems that it presents. Kelln and Penner said they opposed rezoning for the gallery, while neither Lebbel nor Hague were specific on that point.

at Sechelt Indian Band Hall Nov. 3. The 15 candidates for municipal council and the three candidates for mayor in the Nov. 15 election were invited to take part. Each had a table to themselves where voters could come and sit and ask the candidates direct questions for 15 minutes. Organizers then rang a bell and voters would move to another table to question a different candidate for another 15 minutes. The hour and a quarter that had been allotted meant that people only had time to quiz five candidates, so the 35 voters who attended had to be strategic in determining who they wanted to talk to. The Table Talks event was publicized and paid for entirely by councillor candidate and incumbent Darnelda Siegers, who said she got so much out of similar events held prior to the 2011 election that she wanted to be

sure it happened again. “It wasn’t that people got to know me so much, which they did, but I got to hear from people what their concerns were. And I wanted the other councillors and candidates to have that opportunity as well,” Siegers said. Siegers said she’d like to see community gatherings like Table Talks or town halls happen between elections too, as often as every two months. “I think if we did that, then people wouldn’t be sitting and stewing on items, ideas and concerns. There actually could be a dialogue going back and forth.” What were voters asking the candidates about this time around? The Local Weekly asked the three candidates for mayor: John Henderson: “They’re asking about how we are going to create jobs, they’re asking what will we do differently as the next mayor and council, and what have I learned over the first three years.” Bruce Milne: “There’ve been questions about development, and there’ve been quite a few questions about the sewer facilities. Not so much about the process [of planning and building the treatment plant] but about the long-term funding and

whether the costs are fully accounted for.” Christine Younghusband: “People were asking me about my experience, what I had to offer, why I had become a mayoralty candidate. People were coming with deep concerns about their community and they wanted to share those concerns.” The three dozen or so voters who did take the trouble to come over the dinner hour on a rainy Monday night said it was worth the effort. “There’s been the perception that the communication has been very poor, that there’s been no consultation," said Karen Kosof. "I don’t know if that’s true or not but the perception is there, so I think this would really get them closer to people.” In addition to the mayoral candidates and Siegers, council candidates Jon Bell, Norm Blair, Darren Inkster, Terry Karkabe, Alice Janisch, Tom Lamb, Alice Lutes, Noel Muller, Mike Shanks, Ed Steeves, Christine Stefanik, Keith Thirkell and Doug Wright also spoke at their tables with voters. The only candidate not to take part was Michael Turner, who has withdrawn from the campaign, but whose name will still appear on the ballot in Sechelt. Rik Jespersen

How to Improve Life for Rural Canadians Canada Post became a Crown Corporation to improve network services. The Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association (CPAA) wants to ensure this multi-billion dollar public network remains viable and able to serve the public. We have found a way to make this sustainable. A recent study shows that nearly half of post offices outside of Canada’s big cities are in communities with no bank or credit union. In those communities that still have a bank or a credit union, many residents have to contend with limited, part-time banking hours. Our survey of Canada’s 3,300 rural post offices: “Why Post Offices should offer banking services” is available for free download at: http://bit.ly/1r8U3fj. Offering financial services in post offices would create a new revenue stream for Canada Post. Equally important, it would benefit numerous communities in Canada whose residents, in order to get to a bank or credit union, are forced to travel long distances. That costs time and money and stifles economic development. Many other countries similar to Canada, such as the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Japan, Italy and New Zealand, have very successful banking services right in their post offices. We, at CPAA, believe that our study is significant because of the value of this public asset. Canada Post is uniquely positioned to offer financial services throughout rural Canada. When Canada Post can make more money and offer more services to Canadians who need them, we have a perfect opportunity. Let’s not lose it. Please Support Rural Canada. Write to Lisa Raitt, the Minister in charge of Canada Post, and ask her to make this happen. Her letter of suggestion can be found at: http://bit.ly/1pxhMVZ. CPAA represents over 8,700 employees of Canada Post who work in over 3,300 rural post offices across Canada. These offices make up over 50% of all postal outlets. Our membership, consisting of 95% women, serves communities in every province.

Sechelt’s new parking bylaw is running Johnny Walker out of town

Johnny Walker, whose business is buying and selling jewelry and collectibles, has two vehicles with advertising on them. On October 28 and 29th both vehicles were ticketed. Walker said when he moved one of the vehicles a bylaw officer followed him, and when he stopped, threatened to write another ticket. “This is crazy. I’ve never

It means a lot to perform music for something you believe in ... and in front of an audience who share your vision. This is community.” The Sunshine Coast Emergency Cold Weather Shelter

The Shelter is operated by St. Hilda’s Anglican Church in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Homelessness Advisory Committee. The benefit is at Gibsons United Church Hall, 724 Trueman Way. This prompted the district to put out a press release saying that “inaccurate information” was being circulated. “The word ‘principal’ is synonymous with ‘of first importance’,” the statement said. Vehicles with advertising can also be used for transportation of people and goods along with storage of equipment and supplies and other uses, it said. “When such vehicles are parked while engaged in multiple uses, they are not being used for the principal purpose of advertising or displaying signs....The bylaw is consistent with similar bylaws in effect in other British Columbia jurisdictions since 2002.” Walker questions how a bylaw enforcement officer could know whether or not a vehicle is being used for multiple purposes. “How do they know what the driver is doing?...This is a vicious attack on me.” City staff said the bylaw

has been in the works for more than a year, and was passed unanimously. Mayor John Henderson said he was not aware of any complaints around this issue and that the provision was recommended by staff based on best practices in other jurisdictions. Henderson denied that Walker is being targeted but added that he has seen Walker’s vehicles parked for periods of time “and I surmise that the individual was not shopping.” Walker said the timing is suspicious since the bylaw came into effect just in time to inhibit the use of election

advertising on vehicles. “Look at Mayor Henderson’s car. It advertises Sechelt on it and he parks it out front of his campaign office.” Henderson replied: “That’s not advertising. The principal purpose is to get me from home and back.” Walker said he was told by the bylaw officer that the four $25 tickets would be cancelled if he kept his vehicles away, and he has since kept them at home in Gibsons. “He (the bylaw officer) wanted my vehicles off the street...I’m persona non grata in Sechelt.”

Sechelt has a new parking bylaw and one of the first drivers to find out about it says it seems to be aimed at him. One section of the amended bylaw prohibits parking on district streets “for the principal purpose of advertising”. The bylaw was passed by council October 22, but was not advertised by the district.

been ticketed before -- I always obey the parking restrictions,” Walker said. Walker agreed he has been in the habit of parking his vehicles on district streets -- and moving them to avoid violating time limits -- in order to publicize his business and phone number. But he said many vehicles have advertising on them. “What about all the cars and trucks with advertising on them? The realtors? The taxis?” Walker got a Sechelt businessman, whose vehicle advertises his business, to ask city hall about the new bylaw. “He was told, don’t worry about it. ‘We’re not after you’.” The businessman agreed in an interview that is what he was told, but did not want to be quoted by name. Walker reacted by buying an ad in The Local, and mailing out notices, suggesting that any vehicle with advertising “including parking your own company vehicle in front of your home or busi-

The Sunshine Coast Museum in Gibsons is hosting workshops on how to weave cedar boxes and make a drum. On Saturday, November 15th at the Museum, learn the traditional art form of Coast Salish cedar weaving under the guidance of master weaver Jessica Casey. Over the course of the day, you will learn basic cedar weaving skills while crafting a 3” cedar box with a twined wool design. $90.00 per person, all materials included. The workshop runs from 10am-4pm. On Saturday, November 29th, join Tsawaysia Spukwus as she leads you through the process of making your own Sacred Drum while sharing songs and storytelling. Participants have the option of building a 14”, 6” or 3” ornamental drum. You will be truly amazed and empowered as you transform mother earth’s gifts into a resonant drum. Bring A Fresh Voice to Sechelt Council

Noel

MULLER

P

With your support on November 15: I intend to make balanced decisions, with input from the community, and guided by 4 practical principles Fresh Perspective • Transparency Fiscal Responsibility • Green Values I am honoured to bring my youth and enthusiasm to give back to the community I grew up in. I look forward to serving the citizens of Sechelt alongside whatever Mayor and Council is chosen November 15th. By bringing the next generation into the discussion we ensure our future. Together we can work towards a vision of Sechelt that includes everyone.

It is not more bigness that should be our goal. We must attempt, rather, to bring people back to ... the warmth of community, to the worth of individual effort and of individuals working together as a community, to better their lives and their children’s future. Robert F. Kennedy

scope and prodigious quality that requires much more than ticket sale revenues to sustain and to grow,’” said CATS director Kathleen Holmes. “We wish to extend a huge thank you to all those who generously supported this initiative.” Scotiabank generously functioned as coordination hub and major sales location. Canadian Tire, Trail Bay Mall, IGA Gibsons, and Persephone (The Beer Farm) were instrumental to the success, with burgeoning dancers selling cookies at their respective establishments and of course all those who bought Smile Cookies! “Our coastal community was so wonderful!” Individuals, families, businesses, financial institutions, local governments and more purchased Smile Cookies for home, staff appreciation, various events and the like. The response was both heartwarming and, ‘overwhelming,’ for both cookies sellers and cookie bakers. “We just can’t express enough thanks to everyone at Tim Hortons for the incredible amount of extra work

they did.” Even when faced with having orders for 99 dozen cookies added to an already busy night shift staff was always cheerful and helpful with 8680 Smile Cookies being sold! “Everybody pitched in,” says Manager Gill Van Poppelen. ‘It was definitely a group effort.” The Gibson’s Tim Hortons finished first in BC for this year’s Smile Cookie fundraiser. “It’s a lot of hard work but its great fun and always for a good cause: Tim Hortons is always very pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to the hard working organizations within our home community. What a great result we had for this group and for our staff.” Following on this phenomenal success The Nutcracker is well on its way to another magnificent season! You will see some new additions to this year’s production along with the perennial favourites making for another magical holiday tradition! Business owners can spend thousands of dollars on glossy brochures, ads, and websites, but none of these promotional platforms will work if they don’t deliver a strong, clear, simple message. What’s needed is “Words that Shine”, and writing instructor Elizabeth Rains will be teaching just that in a Nov. 18 workshop on how to remove fluff from your advertising and replace it with lively words that capture customers. Words That Shine: How to Attract Clients and Customers by Writing Right will show entrepreneurs how to promote their business through plain language. Participants will learn how simply stated, concrete information will draw attention to

the special qualities of their business. Elizabeth Rains has had a long career as an author, magazine editor, journalist and instructor. She holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from Carleton University, as well as certificates in Graphic Design and Web Publishing, and teaches writing and editing at Capilano University and Simon Fraser University. The workshop will be held Tues. Nov. 18 at the Gibsons Chamber of Commerce office in Sunnycrest Mall, from 5 to 6:30 pm. Workshops are free to Chamber members or $10 for non-members. Remembrance Day means even more to me this year than it did in the past. It was only a few weeks ago that we lost two soldiers on our soil, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo. I have been reminded, throughout this challenging time for Canada, that faith and love of our country are still very relevant values to all of us. There has been a great deal of discussion in the media, and in the halls of Parliament, over whether the horrific actions of two individuals can be attributed to mental health, or terrorism. Evil, in no matter what form it comes, must be confronted.

My own father hated war and conflict, and yet he fought during the Second World War and was held prisoner for three years. It is clear to me the socalled “Islamic State of Iraq & Syria” (ISIS) is an evil that must be confronted. We all know of their campaign of atrocities against innocent children, women and men. That is why I joined my Parliament colleagues in voting for airstrikes by six CF-18 fighter aircraft as part of a strike force with our allies. These actions don’t rule out the humanitarian action and I have taken an active role and hosted a forum on humanitarian aid in Iraq with Minister Jason Kenney on October 25th, and am proud that our Government has committed more than $28 million through our humanitarian partners on the ground to provide relief supplies and contributing to ref-

ugee camp construction Understandably, these recent events have also increased conversations about our security here at home. First, there are steps that are easy to achieve and are not an infringement on the freedom of Canadians, such as increasing the security presence on Parliament Hill while maintaining its openness to visitors from across the country, and around the world. In closing, if these acts of terror were designed to fracture our country, they have fortified our resolve. No doubt, things will change as I am sure we will all see heightened security as never before. Sadly, that is the era in which we live and Canada, has a leader in the world, and takes its responsibilities seriously. We will not shirk from them. We will be vigilant; we will be engaged.

Remembrance ceremonies were held across the country Tuesday. This is the Sechelt cenotaph. John Gibbs photo

The Pender Harbour Advisory Council is seeking your input during an open forum (meeting) on the acquisition of two properties across from the Pender Harbour Health Centre. These properties are currently listed for sale and are ideally situated for targeting tourists as it is at one of the main entrances to Pender Harbour. While we have had several meetings with interested parties/societies on this subject, we are now soliciting opinions and funding ideas from community members. This may be one of several meetings to compile a comprehensive plan, but it will be only through your input of ideas, opinions and support that this can be accomplished.

Addressing ones health holistically, meaning, physically, as well as, mentally and emotionally, effectively supports or rebuilds our immune system, making one less susceptible to illness in general and better able to resolve illnesses when they do arise. Holistic medicines, such as homeopathy, work with the mind body connection in a person, rebalancing health not just on a physical level, but on a mental and emotional level as well, alleviating susceptibility to chronic illness and simultaneously building a strong immune system. Along with preventing chronic illness, homeopathy can also relieve flu symptoms by speeding up the healing process within the body so that lingering cough or flu can resolve faster. Our immune systems are beautifully designed to protect us from harmful bacteria and viruses. However, stress; physical, mental and emotional, and not taking care of our bodies can have a negative effect on our ability to ward of viruses and harmful bacteria and also lead to chronic disease. Stress is a natural part of life, but it is how we respond and cope with stress that greatly affects our health either positively or negatively, which in turns affects our susceptibility to illnesses and ability to heal. Becoming ill with the flu or a cold is not necessarily a sign that you and your child have a weakened immune system. It is natural to become ill, and for children it helps to build their immune system. Although, signs that you or your child have a weakened immune system are: frequent colds and flu, coughs that do not resolve after two or three weeks, a flu that goes deep into the chest and even turns to pneumonia; repeated sore throats or strep, tonsillitis, ear or sinus infections, not fully recovering from a cough or flu after several months or even over a year, for example. The Local - Thursday, November 13, 2014 19

We are in the last quarter of the Scorpio cycle. This one has been especially potent beginning with the rare triple conjunction Solar Eclipse of Sun, Moon and Venus. Currently, Mercury, Venus the Sun and Saturn remain in Scorpio with the latter 3 all closely aligned. Saturn brings a sobering weight to matters, a feeling of delay and restriction. Many have likely felt this over the past couple of weeks. It’s best application of disciplined work and focus. But it will be offset by Moon closely aligned with Jupiter in Leo at least early this week which bring some upliftment. As well, the Sun in close aspect to Jupiter brings an expansive, enthusiastic mood to the fore, even if the aspect is a hard one – a square in this case. An exodus out of Scorpio and into Sagittarius is set to begin and Venus will be the first to make the move on Sunday November 16th which will activate a more festive, cultural spark. Then on Saturday November 22nd at 1:38 am PST the Sun enters Sagittarius and at 4:19 am the Moon follows suit and just 13 minutes later at 4:32 am is the New Moon in Sagittarius. It will take another 5 days before Mercury joins in and enters Sagittarius on November 27th. Since Jupiter rules Sagittarius and it is in Leo these days, this archetypal weave of influences will bring a spike of drama to the current dynamic. These days of the Scorpio cycle are living up to their deep, mysterious and intense reputation.

Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 20)

You are in the last stages of a deep period of change. Everyone is experiencing it one way or another. For you it has and continues in the arena of

ers that once came naturally may no longer be so available. As well, upheavals close to home must be contended with. This is a call to courageously advance. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) A philosophical, visionary and perhaps adventurous cycle too is a central theme. It is re-

quiring a creative yet patient and persistent focus upon the details. The danger now is to get overwhelmed by the small things leading to reactive worrying. Aim to see the bigger picture while following through on the many small things that can make all the difference.

real treasure: mutual love and respect. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) Some measurable starts, shifts and perhaps some completions too in your public and professional life should be apparent by now. Yet, it may also be a stormy time overall. In the deeper scheme of things pow-

your direction is a key to your success. How can you increase your personal power and positive influence? The answers you seek are linked to the questions you ask. Precise questions will yield more accurate answers. Send me an email and I will send you a free, effective tool to contribute to your cause. Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) You are in a passionate mood cycle and your ambitions are running high. Financial interests and considerations are at the forefront of your mind. Designs to organize your life to increase your flow of abundance and prosperity are a central theme. Stimulating new streams of income is implied. At deeper levels, your dream is to do what you love and love what you do. Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) A steady advance into new territory is in the spotlight. This is simply the next chapter of a longer sequel that began a few years ago. A steady process of re-invention or at least of adaptation is both the consequence of and the cause of a new lifestyle. These are reflections of an expansion of your creative potential. Direct your imagination to invention for best results. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) It is darkest before the dawn yet the new day is fast approaching. It will require a weave of disciplined assertion and liberation from the past. The first light will become apparent next week. For now, have faith in the natural cyclic nature of reality. Like the seasons, autumn and winter are pulverizing, but your spring is poised to begin. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) In the changing fortunes of time, friends come and go. Yet true friends ever remain true even when visits are rare and few. As well, new comrades and allies come forward at different stages of life. This is one of those times when you could probably use some sincere and genuine involvements. Focus upon the

relationships. Looking back 2-3 years you will notice that you have changed… a lot. At best you feel renewed. This process continues rather acutely and will for another month. Taurus (Apr 20 – May 21) A process of deepening, change, transformation, completion and ending on all relationship fronts continues. In some respects this is just the beginning phase of a deeper process set to begin before the year is out. Your willingness to engage consciously and cooperatively is ideal. Aim to curb pride and cultivate a balance of humility and confidence. Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) One way or another, a deep healing journey is underway. Although the roots may be traced back a couple of years anyway, last month’s triple conjunction Solar Eclipse activated a much deeper phase. This healing may be your own but it likely also involves others. A whole new mode of perception, perhaps even self-concept, is required. Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22) A potent, creative cycle is approaching its completion stages. If you have not yet capitalized on it this is your reminder. Looking to the future and making key, pivotal choices with longer term considerations in mind is featured. Patient and deliberate organization of your affairs, legal documents, investments, finances, wills and so on are examples. Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 23) Making and/or experiencing a series of changes close to home has inspired and/or challenged you to respond creatively. Sometimes it is simply about clearing the clutter and re-arranging the furniture. At deeper levels, circumstances are pushing you to dig deep to access hidden or latent talents and resources. Get your imagination to work for you. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) You have entered a rather sharp learning curve. Knowing
