Habitat for Humanity has been in existence on the Sunshine Coast since 2004 starting with its recycling program of bottle returns through the efforts of Ed Hawkins and Margie Garrard. The ReStore opened June 2007, located in the basement of the building that is now F.Y.I. Doctors’ in Wilson Creek. In 2008 the ReStore moved to a hanger at the Sechelt airport and in October 2009 moved to its present location. St. Mary’s Hospital celebrates completion of phase II construction target to achieve a 40 per cent energy savings when compared to other LEED Gold Certified hospitals.

The most significant infrastructure investment in the community in decades, the renovation and expansion of St. Mary’s Hospital was jointly funded by the Ministry of Health, the Sunshine Coast Regional Hospital District, the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation and the St. Mary’s Hospital/ Health Care Auxiliary.

The St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation and Hospital Auxiliary fundraising campaigns garnered more than $2 million to purchase modern furnishings and pieces of equipment within the hospital.

“The Sunshine Coast community has demonstrated how very important our St. Mary’s Hospital is to each and every one of us,” says Gayle Bennett, president of the St. Mary’s Hospital/Health Care Auxiliary.

“When we were asked to help equip our new building, this request was met with an outpouring of generosity. The funds raised by the Auxiliary have come from countless hours of work by nearly 500 tireless Auxiliary volunteers and the support of residents from Port Mellon to Earls Cove.”

“In the six short months since the new tower opened, I’ve heard many stories of the difference this modern, new facility is making in the lives of Sunshine Coast residents,” says Maureen Clayton, chair of the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation. “I’m extremely proud to be part of such a giving community that is so committed to doing their part to help ensure we have quality health care right here on the Coast.

The generosity of our many donors is a benefit to all of us and makes a huge difference—and the proof is right here in the new tower.”

Conservation group restoring eelgrass beds On Wednesday, Sept 25 – thankfully a lovely, sunny day – volunteers from Friends of Forage Fish and Seagrass Conservation Working Group (SCWG) spent an afternoon at the Sechelt Nation hatchery, tying washers to eelgrass shoots so that divers could anchor them securely to the ocean floor in restoration sites in Halfmoon Bay and Sechelt Inlet.

Eelgrass is a very important habitat for countless sea creatures and acts as a stabilizer for the seabed. It grows from a rhizome type of root, similar to bamboo.

It is a true plant, and is vulnerable to shading, such as by docks, and to mooring buoys, which scour the circumference around it, and destroy the eelgrass.

Thoughtful placement of structures beyond the growing depth of the eelgrass can prevent this.

This is the third year of monitoring the plants in Halfmoon Bay (site of an old log dump, where we are trying to restore what was historically an eelgrass bed) and the second year for McLean Bay and Tillicum sites in Sechelt Inlet.

Thank you goes out to all the volunteers and to the Sechelt Nation, especially Darlene and Herb, for letting the volunteers set up at the hatchery for easy access to the ocean!

The shíshálh’s unique culture and cedar bentbox inspired the project design according to Susan Gushe, Managing Director of the Vancouver office of Perkins+Will. “This project represents to us the success that comes from merging state-of-the-art care with a deep connection to nature and community—and the importance of striving for design excellence in healthcare facilities.”

St. Mary’s Hospital is unique among other British Columbia hospitals: not only are all of its inpatient rooms single-occupancy — a proven method for minimizing the transmission of infections between patients — it is one of the few hospitals to have operable windows in all clinical and inpatient areas, which has received significant positive feedback from patients and staff.

“St. Mary’s is truly setting a new benchmark in healthcare design,” adds Tye Farrow, senior partner at Farrow Partnership Architects. “A a publicly accessible interior ‘porch’ along the south elevation provides respite for patients by allowing direct views to Georgia Straight; 75% of spaces have access to natural daylight; and skylights and clerestory windows are included in the emergency room area where the large floor plate would have restricted access to natural light.”

Targeting LEED Gold status, St. Mary’s Hospital is pushing the environmental envelope as well: the entire site is targeting net carbon reduction through the use of a geo-exchange system, a high-performance envelope, a photovoltaic array and passive design strategies, such as the use of solar shading and operable windows that allow for natural ventilation.

With the opening of the new lobby and entrance way at St. Mary’s Hospital, the second phase of the $44.25 million hospital expansion and renovation project is now complete. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony held Wednesday, October 9, dignitaries spoke of the unit’s benefit to the community and paid tribute to the foresight of the shíshálh Nation elders who donated the land for the original building constructed in 1963.

Valerie Bourne, representing the Sechelt Indian Band, recalled the original discussions. “There was a tradition among our Chief and Council – the word was ‘compassion.’ I remember the elders saying it was the perfect place for our hospital, right in the centre of the Sunshine Coast.” Chief Gary Feschuk later noted that the land had particular meaning, as it was part of the farm attached to the residential school and had been used to raise food for the school overseers (and not the students). He pointed out that giving the land for a positive purpose allowed it – and the community – to heal. Chief Feschuk added that prior to the hospital’s construction, anyone requiring treatment at the original St. Mary’s site in Garden Bay had to travel by taxi, “so this location would really save on the taxi fares.”

The first phase, a new 5,400 square-metre tower, officially opened to the public in March 2013 and marked the first major expansion since the last renovation in 1989. Designed

by Perkins+Will Canada, the new facility features lightfilled lobby marking the new main entrance and connecting new and existing portions of the hospital. A new mural created by shíshálh artists spans and dominates the 70-foot-long lobby, highlighting the community room with its recognition of

Editorial Opinion Foster families make our province stronger When families struggle - whether due to conflicts, substance misuse, illness or because they require specialized care for a child with complex needs - it’s comforting to know there are safe havens available for the children and teens who have nowhere else to turn.

Every day in British Columbia, more than 3,100 foster families open their hearts and their homes to some of society’s most vulnerable young people. Foster families give stability in the midst of chaos; they provide a safe place in which to live, develop, grow and play; they offer an open door just when it seems all other doors have closed.

October is Foster Family Month in BC, and there is no better time than now to consider what it means to be a foster parent.

Foster families can help create the foundation a vulnerable child or teen needs in order to develop into a confident adult. They are part of a team that helps young people to return to their families, live with extended family or make the transition to an adoptive family.

Whether they provide emergency, short or long-term care, foster families play a crucial part in the lives of thousands of young British Columbians. It’s an influence and a connection that can last a lifetime, a notion highlighted by the fact that more than one in three children in government care who are adopted are adopted by their foster family.

Foster parents come from all walks of life. They each bring different experiences to the role, and they each have different reasons for doing the work they do, yet they all share one very important thing in common: they are ordinary people engaged in extraordinary acts of kindness.

Not everyone can be a foster parent - it takes a very special person to perform this important service. And the reality is that there is always a need for more families who are willing to embrace the joys and the challenges of this role. Letters to the Editor – Opinions A question of harm Before you add your name to the petition to legalize pot, consider this: a forty-year research study conducted in New Zealand has found that teenagers who smoke pot can lose 8 IQ points, and it’s permanent. Madeline Meier, lead researcher, says, “Marijuana is not harmless, particularly for adolescents” (Globe and Mail, Monday, Aug. 27, 2012). Smoking pot seems to be a dumb choice that makes you even dumber.

(i.e. Site C Dam) IF it is done correctly, raises many serious questions.

Were respondents asked if they were willing to have their hydro rates double if the province spends the $7.9 billion (plus cost over-runs) to build Site C Dam? Were respondents asked if they were willing to see nearly 16,000 acres of top quality farmland flooded and permanently lost for food production?

Were respondents informed that there has been no independent economic analysis done of the costs and benefits of building this dam?

Were respondents aware that the province has removed public scrutiny of this project from the BC Utilities Commission which has twice turned down Site C Dam as too expensive and not needed?

I suspect that the majority of the people polled were largely uninformed about the serious negative consequences of this massive and hugely expensive project.

As many parts of the world prepares to sit back and enjoy ‘the beautiful

game’ from the comfort of our own homes or local watering holes, we may want to be mindful of what else is happening in Brazil as the World Cup approaches.

One thing that Brazil is known for is the flash and skill of their soccer players, definitely exciting to watch. Not as regimented or as defensive as some European soccer powerhouses, the Brazilian game can be traced to beach and neighbourhood play where all you need is a ball and two feet.

So here then is the rub: As the World Cup kickoff nears, many stadiums are incomplete and there are safety concerns in those stadiums. There are also the rising costs associated with these stadiums and with hosting this once-in-every-four-year sport spectacular in Brazil. These rising costs have been difficult for the Brazilian government to digest. Coupled with these rising costs is the fact that the average ticket price is far out of reach of the average Brazilian (end zone seats cost what would be equal to 28 months of rice or 37 months of bread for the average Brazilian). The sad part is that the costs associated with hosting the event will most likely

be borne by these regular citizens who cannot afford to go to the game themselves; residents of the same neighbourhoods that contribute many great players to the Brazilian national team program cannot afford to be at the games to see their heroes.

For me, a small comforting note is that Brazil is always one of the favourites to win it all.

Those neighbourhoods and small towns may very well have their heroes when the final whistle blows. One side of me will cheer: go England, go Spain, go Germany, go Italy, but the other side will always be shouting “VIVA BRASILIA!”.

In Canada, many adolescent girls struggle to find ways to access the education they need to achieve their dreams and goals.

Here is a quote by an adolescent girl, Theresa Leone Meyer, from a speech delivered to the 57th UN Commission on the Status of Women this year: “I am an adolescent girl.

I stand in a gap. I am no longer a child but I am not yet a woman: my needs are unique…I live in every village, every town, every city and every region of the world, although you may have to look hard to find me – I may be out of school, already married or working in someone’s home with no ability to leave…Ask me what it means to be an adolescent girl where I live…We are adolescent girls. Hear us.”

At the Sunshine Coast campus of Capilano University, we strive to provide programs and opportunities that support the education of young women.

In addition, our campus is engaged with community partnerships to strengthen educational opportunities locally. The Welcoming Communities project, in collaboration with Sunshine Coast Community Services and other organizations is creating pathways for learning and social connections that include young immigrant women. (See below for more information.) As we acknowledge the International Day of the Girl, we also celebrate the increasing diversity of cultures that make up the fabric of our community on the Sunshine Coast.

These collaborations are inspired by the voices of adolescent girls and informed

by their needs and goals.

Emerging adult women’s future health, income and the well-being of their children are all positively correlated with their level of education. The evidence is in: educated girls improve the well-being of their families, their communities, and their countries. Let us all celebrate the International Day of the Girl.

health care and infrastructure requirements. It is hard to imagine a scenario where these costs will go down in the future.

If you agree with me, then we have two choices – each of us pays higher taxes in the future or we find ways to increase the number of taxpayers to help share these costs.

Our commitment to business development will increase the number of businesses and thereby the number of taxpayers in Sechelt. Council has charged Sechelt Innovations Ltd. (SIL) with supporting our existing businesses and welcoming new businesses and investors.

Elphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) invites residents to the opening of a new trail that connects up a large section of the Elphinstone forest slopes. The recently completed trail links up 2 of the isolated Elphinstone Parks taking you through some beautiful stands of emerging old-growth.

This new protected zone would protect vital resources, such as forest wildlife habitat, wildcrafting and treasured recreational opportunities for future generations.

• The Health Trail is approx. 4kms (2.5 miles) in length on varied terrain crossing 10 creeks on narrow foot bridges. This trail has a 7.5 rating for difficulty. Hikers must be in good shape. Estimated round trip: 3.5 hrs.

No dogs as cougar, bear, deer, elk, bobcat, pheasant, fox (sighted 12/10/13) and grouse are found throughout the Elphinstone area. Kids 10 yrs and older are encouraged to try it out.

All About Town ~ pender harbour Pender Harbour rallies for Grasshopper staff Old time entertainment at Box Lunch Social and Dance Employees of the iconic Pender Harbour Hotel, Grasshopper Pub and liquor store were left jobless after a recent fire gutted the building’s top floor. One employee, who lived on-site, lost all her belongings as well as her job.

Within days, neighbouring businesses and individuals rallied to assist the Grasshopper/ Hotel staff members impacted by the blaze.

On Friday, October 18, starting at 5 p.m.,

the Garden Bay Pub will host the latest in a series of fundraisers. Along with spirited bidding on gift baskets and services donated for auction by local businesses, pub patrons will purchase tickets for 50/50 and Meat Draws, with all funds to benefit the employees impacted by the blaze.

As the weekly Friday Meat Draw is a popular event, patrons are advised to arrive early for best seating.

The Pender Harbour Community Club invites all Coasters to step back in time with an afternoon of dancing and fun at the Old Time Dance and Box Lunch Social, Sunday, October 20 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Pender Harbour Community Hall. Swing to the band music of years gone by, when ladies and gentlemen dressed up in their Sunday best, kicked up their heels a little and the company of Harbour Boutique 1142enjoyed friends and neighbours.

Many will remember the box lunch social – ladies packed a lunch for two in a box that was decorated, often including samples of their homemade pies, baking, pickles and sandwiches.

No wonder, then, that Gladiator WILD Seafood is attracting attention and repeat customers to Earl Antilla’s roadside shop on Francis Peninsula Road.

Recently, Antilla has expanded his reach, installing freezers at Oak Bay Market in Madeira Park and Roberts Creek Health Foods. Wild BC tuna (free of the mercury contaminants found in Atlantic fishery products), halibut, cod, salmon – candied, smoked hot or cold, or ‘straight up’ – octopus and three types of prawns await the discerning buyer. Cases of canned smoked tuna, oysters and salmon, and bags of ‘pet food’ (100 per cent non-commercially dried fish) line the shelves.

“I’m all about the best quality,” Antilla says. “If I won’t eat it, I won’t sell it.

People want to taste a nice, fresh piece of fish with the flavour of the sea. And I’ve never had one return – that’s very important to me.”

The rear of Antilla’s house overlooks the driveway and shop; the front overlooks the moorage, where the Gladiator (whose name and image, painted by Antilla’s sister Elaine, adorns the packaging) rests until the next season opens. Like most fishers, “I fish really hard from May to the end of August.

We’re out there every day,

and get about four to five hours sleep per night. But I didn’t want the business to consume me, so I fish enough for the Sunshine Coast market, and like to market directly to consumers through farmers’ markets, specialty markets, and so on.”

A third-generation commercial fisherman, Antilla’s roots go back to the Finnish community that first drifted down from Sointula in the early part of the last century. His grandfather began gillnetting on

the Fraser River soon after emigrating from Finland; Antilla’s father joined him on the river at the age of 16. Earl began working the commercial fishery during school vacations, and his own children followed him onto the sea and now operate their own fishboat, also moored at Earl’s dock.

Antilla’s family enjoy experimenting with cooking techniques for the various products. Prawns, for example (spotted, king, and sidestripe – the latter usually exported to the Japanese market) each require special treatment and a light hand. While sister Elaine might serve up spotted prawns peeled and wrapped in bacon for a succulent appetizer, Earl may prefer a simple sauté of unshelled sidestripes with olive oil and sea salt, allowing them to rest in the pan just a minute per side before tossing them onto a platter. And then “ya gotta be quick shelling them, or you don’t get your share!”

Poached Sidestripe Prawn Cocktail 1 kg. side stripe prawns 250 ml (1/2 c.) ketchup 1 large shallot, minced 1/2 red onion, minced Juice of 2 limes and 1/2 lemon 2 cloves of garlic, minced 1/2 t salt Chili pepper and hot sauce to taste 500 ml (1 c.) of white wine Peel the prawns and freeze the shells and roe include in a future batch of fish stock.

Mince shallot, onion, and garlic in blender. Add the lime and lemon juice, salt and ketchup.

Taste. Add hot sauce to taste and remember, the heat will intensify as the prawns marinate.

T-BONE........................................... $7.99/LB. In a small saucepan, bring the wine to barely a simmer. Add the shrimp, stir, count 30 seconds and remove from the heat. Strain, reserve and freeze the liquid for the next batch of fish stock.

Combine the shrimp and sauce and chill for at least 2 hours. Serve as an appetizer.

New regulations for pesticide use To ensure cosmetic pesticides are being used safely and responsibly, proposed revisions to the BC Integrated Pest Management Oct 3, 2013 Regulation (IMPR) will more strictly control their sale and use in private landscaped areas, while simplifying requirements for pesticides commonly considered safe. Colour trending to muted simplicity for next year’s new look

With just two months until Christmas and Holiday Week, it’s a good time to deck the walls with fresh new colour.

When paint companies prepare their palettes and forecast trends for an upcoming year, they review sales of the hues customers actually purchased for their walls. While showrooms may glow with jewel tones and retro looks from the heyday of Art Deco, most homes trend towards less trendy, more classic shades.

For 2014, most palettes will feature muted, serene simplicity with calm neutrals rich in depth. Against this background, bold colours and patterns in furnishings or accessories provide fun accents that really pop for an uncluttered design statement.
