Client Testimonial: From the beginning to the end of our Whistler property sale, Laurie has made it a stress-free experience. Selling a recreation property can be difficult because we are not on site so Laurie looked after everything that normally the seller would do. As an added bonus her efforts had resulted in our long-term tenants being able to stay rather than move and look for another suite to rent. Not only was our property sold quickly, Laurie was knowledgeable and professional throughout the process. This is the second time we have hired Laurie, so we would highly recommend her services. Thank you for all your help Laurie! Hugs, Linda and Ken

Walter Powell, Home Designer and Architect Extraordinaire

henever conversation turns to Luxury Homes and unique architecture here on the Coast, as it often does around our office, you are likely to hear the name Walter Powell, home designer and architect extraordinaire. In fact, prior to actually sitting down and meeting with Walter, I had heard of his work by some of the Coast’s premiere builders and one thing unanimously voiced by all, is that, besides being a consummate professional, an extremely creative designer, and an award-winning architect, Walter Powell is also a great guy to work with. After hearing this and following up with a bit more research I was intrigued by this modern day renaissance man and was really looking forward to meeting him. Here was a guy that started one of the first solar energy companies in Canada back in 1972, pioneered the development of 3D computer assisted design systems in the early 80s, taught architecture at the prestigious “Academy of

Rome”, acted as consultant to Fortune 500 Companies and governments around the world, had his own practice in Whistler during the growth surge of the 90s, and was an associate partner in one of Vancouver’s largest and most influential architectural firms, completing innovative housing projects that paved the way for the warehouse conversions of Gastown and Yaletown. All this before relocating to Halfmoon Bay in 2003, a decision that he and his wife made only 21 days after first setting foot on the coast. Sunshine Coast Luxury Homes & Decor Magazine: What first attracted you to home design and architecture and when did you first feel the calling to start designing homes? Walter Powell: When I was a young boy, even before kindergarten, my dad had a wood shop where he would design and build furniture. I loved being in the shop with my dad and basically grew up in the shavings. I loved to play in houses under construction in our neighbourhood and I drew pictures of houses and built models out of the left-over wood in the shop.

7

“Each site has its own voice and if you listen, you’ll hear what it has to say.” My dad encouraged me and infused in me an understanding of detail and respect for craftsmanship. That was the beginning of my love of construction and designing homes. As I grew up I worked in every aspect of home construction from digging holes and pouring concrete to framing and finishing. SCHDM: Tell me a bit about your involvement in the early stages of computer-assisted design and how that affects your work today? WP: In high school I was very good at math, which led me to study systems engineering in the early 70s. We used computer simulations to solve complex environmental engineering problems and we had to design a lot of the software and programming for it because it just didn’t exist at the time. A few years later the PC had not been invented yet, but I was already using computer graphics and developing software while studying architecture at Carleton University. Computer graphics was in its infancy and my experience with computers combined with my love of architecture opened up amazing opportunities for me. In particular, I had a professor who was a specialist in natural forms found in nature and the geometry of these forms. I begin working with him to provide housing solutions based on these natural forms that could be used by the United Nations for disaster relief. We created computer models of the housing and studied how they

8

would withstand the forces of natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes. This gave me an appreciation and understanding of the relationships and harmony of proportion between our own bodies and the natural world, the forces of nature and structure of our built environment. Later, when I had the good fortune to study art and architecture in Italy and France, I learned

that the great master artists and architects throughout history had used these same proportions to design and build the great cultural icons of the world that we all admire so much. My work with computers in architecture led me to act as consultant to many governments, large corporations and architects and engineering companies around the world. Many of these projects involved housing and ultimately this

gave me an understanding of the forms, styles and proportions of homes of different cultures and the appreciation of how every member of a diverse team adds value to a project. Today I use 3D computer models to design homes and the internet to collaborate with my clients and team members. This makes it easy for my clients to see their homes and make design choices. It also makes it easy for us to work together no matter where in the world they happen to be. SCHDM: I see that you design many different types of homes. You don’t specialize in one particular style. Could you tell us more about that? WP: Everyone has a dream for what they want their home to be. Some people like classic craftsmen style, others like modern concrete and glass or west coast post and beam or cottage style and that is all good and wonderful. To me the most important thing is to listen to my clients very carefully, to truly understand what is the heart of the home they are dreaming about, how will it feel to the families who live there and how does it relate and cooperate with the site, the views, the sun and the landscape. SCHDM: What is the most rewarding part of what you do? WP: I love the whole process of bringing a clients dream into reality. I love hearing about the dream in the first place, I love sitting on the site and imagining the possibilities. I love the design

process where the project starts to take on a life of its own and tells us what it wants to be, I love working with all the amazing other professionals and trades and artists and crafts people who come together to build it, I love being on the site during construction to work things out as they come up and I love standing in the completed project with happy clients who are amazed at their new home. SCHDM: What is your first priority when you begin a new project? WP: To listen very carefully to what my clients really want to accomplish. Designing and building a home is like trying to solve a giant puzzle that has all kinds of pieces that keep changing. There are many factors that come into play that can affect the dream so it is really important to understand the dream in the first place and keep the project moving in that direction no matter what challenges and obstacles may come along. SCHDM: How do you deal with the sometimes not so friendly terrain of the coast? WP: Often what appear to be difficulties can actually offer opportunities for interesting access, better views and creative building solutions. By taking advantage of the natural site features the home can be in harmony with the landscape. I see this

as a positive influence. There are also always budget considerations and what we really want is to put as much of the budget into the comfort and finishing of the home as possible rather than spend it on complex site construction. If we let the site inform us about what the house wants to be rather than force a square peg into a round hole, then we can end up with something that may be surprising but may far exceed the client’s expectations. SCHDM: Since you arrived on the coast you’ve received many prestigious awards and accolades. To what do you attribute this success? WP: I’ve been very fortunate and grateful to receive recognition for the work I’ve done but it’s really about all of the amazing and talented people who contribute at every level of the project. We have incredible builders, artists and craftspeople right here on the Sunshine Coast who are the best I have ever worked with anywhere in the world. Not only are they world-class builders but they also know how to build on difficult sites and they have a network of friends and professionals to call on. Anyone who wants to build a beautiful home on the Sunshine Coast will find a huge benefit from engaging the many talented people who live here.

“Never compromise on the dream for your home. Rather let that dream lead you to discover the real heart of how you will live in it.”

Sunshine Coast Luxury Homes & Decor Magazine • Fall 2017

9

SCHDM: I’ve seen some of your homes in photos in various publications. I hear that some of these photos have been downloaded a lot. Which home was the most popular? WP: One home that seems to capture people’s interest is Seaglass Cottage, which is featured in this article. Photos of this home have been downloaded over 100,000 times from the Houzz website. SCHDM: What was the inspiration for that particular home? WP: The owners wanted to build a home that would feel like the beach house in the film “Something’s Got to Give” with Diane Keaton

10

and Jack Nicolson. Working closely with the owner’s we came up with a home design that uses the same architectural language but is uniquely west coast and feels cosy and warm and comfortable and also somewhat elegant. SCHDM: I’ve heard of homeowners that have hired architects and builders from Vancouver to build homes here on the coast. What is your advice to these people? WP: The Sunshine Coast has been a sort of well kept secret but the word is now out and anyone planning a project here should know that we have very talented people here, some of the very best in the world, literally, and they are ca-

pable of building anything you can imagine on sites that might intimidate a mountain goat. They know how to build here and how to allocate the budget to it’s best use and they live here so there are none of the costs associated with bringing in a team from somewhere else. SCHDM: I know you’ve had an interesting and varied career that has allowed you to travel and work all over the world. What made you settle here on the Sunshine Coast? WP: I was born in Victoria and lived in the Lower Mainland for many years. After all that time in the city my wife and I wanted to move somewhere that would have a “community” and that would feel comfortable and safe and friendly. We wanted a home that would let us have a garden and be near the ocean and the forest. After looking all across Canada and parts of the states we felt frustrated until a friend told us about a property on the Sunshine Coast. We came here on a weekend and it just felt right. We decided on the spot that this was where we wanted to be. We moved here 21 days later and I am very happy here and grateful for being part of this amazing community. - B. eing a self-confessed card-carrying member of the “Technophobe Club” I was a bit apprehensive at first when asked to do an interview with home integration specialist Darryl Dougan of Audio Excellence. Much to my relief, about an hour into the interview I felt a lot less intimidated. Darryl explained how the various systems operate and sync with one another, and as it slowly sunk in, I became more and more intrigued. Not only with the possibilities that this new smart home technology presented but also with the simplicity of the operating system itself. As it turns out, even a low-tech guy like myself could learn to dim the lights, turn up the music, lower the shades, raise the temperature, turn on the outside cameras, adjust the nightlight in the kids’ room, turn on the TV and set the coffee maker on auto pilot for the morning. All this and more from a series of discrete wall switches, a non-threatening seven-inch tablet, or better yet, by voice command when used in conjunction with a readily available Amazon Alexa unit. Apparently, the only thing this system doesn’t do is turn down the bed, fluff the pillow and tuck you in. Darryl assures me that they are working on that now. One word that came to mind more than once, after I had managed to fully grasp the concept and understand the function of a smart home system, was intuitive. Darryl explained to me in non-tech, layman terms, that once the system has been personalized by programming your settings, the system is capable of anticipating your preferences and routines and will control your home environment accordingly. In other words, it’s as easy as “set it and forget it” to echo a popular phrase. I asked Darryl about the advantages of custom designing a smart home system for a new construction project versus a retrofit for an existing home. Both are equally good candidates, but most of the work that Audio Excellence does both here on the Coast, as well as throughout Vancouver and the Lower Mainland is with new construction. More and more homeowners are having their existing homes upgraded with the technology as well. This can be approached more on an a-la-carte basis. People can focus on the areas that are a priority for their particular purposes, whether it’s to optimize energy savings, create a cost-effective security system, or just add an element of convenience and designer ambience to their existing home. So how much does it cost to live in a home like the Jetsons? According to Darryl it all depends on how far you want to go. If you’re looking for a simple but effective security system the cost is relatively inexpensive, especially when you consider the impact on your home insurance resulting in lowered premiums and of course added piece of mind. If you install a smart climate control feature the cost is soon recovered by way of reduced heating and cooling bills. Or you could go all in for a complete custom designed smart home system that could include motorized blinds, advanced security system, lighting control, whole-home audio, home theatre and video distribution, touch screens and remotes, thermostats and sensors, and individual climate control. That could run as high as $200,000 or more. Having said that, and to put the price in context, one of the major advantages of going smart (besides the convenience, comfort, aesthetics and security factors) is the actual savings in energy costs. A properly designed smart home system will cut energy consumption substantially which converts to serious savings to the home owner and will pay for itself within a few years. That’s a good investment for everyone’s future. - B. Ferguson

Aurora West

W

e recently took a guided tour and sneak preview of the latest addition to the Click Village at the Aurora West Development with Barry Maedel, his son Sam, and Scott Fernley of Click Modular Homes. For those of you that aren’t familiar or may have missed the story in Business Magazine Spring 2017 edition, these guys are the Coast’s own custom designers and builders of a hybrid version of the traditional manufactured or prefab home. You know, the ones that were so popular back in the day with people on fixed incomes, retirees and those just looking for an affordable vacation home. With advanced features, engineered structural improvements and modern kitchen and bathroom options these new hybrid modular homes are rapidly becoming a viable alternative to the lack of quality affordable housing that is so prevalent here on the Coast in recent times. Sunshine Coast Luxury Homes & Decor Magazine: When we toured through the new two-story model home it felt very modern and spacious, unlike what you would think of as a manufactured home. What have you done it terms of design to create this sense of space? Click Modular Homes: The upstairs front room and main floor ceiling heights do a lot to enhance the sense of space and light. This is one of the key characteristics of a Click home - small building footprints that internally feel like big living spaces. SCHDM: Who are the typical buyers of Click Homes? CMH: The Click customer base is truly full spectrum. We have young and old alike from families starting out, to retirees, to independent singles all of whom call themselves members of the Click family. SCHDM: What would you say are some of the advantages of a Click home over traditional construction? CMH: There are many documented advantages for a factory manufactured home versus traditionally constructed. These

14

include dry and environmentally controlled construction environments, safe working conditions, higher efficiency and quality controls, waste and recycling management, and improved worker safety. From the customer’s perspectives advantages also include buyer confidence, little or no guess work or daily construction & design decisions. SCHDM: What are some of the challenges you have had to overcome in order to introduce the concept of a pre-manufactured home to the home buyers market? CMH: Interestingly enough we do very little in the way of introducing or overcoming any biases that may exist for a manufactured home. Our customers, by a very large margin, are actively seeking a manufactured home and come with some knowledge and a very high level of comfort with our product. Customers who have never been exposed to a manufactured home are often very surprised at the build quality, size and general accessibility our homes present. I cannot think of one lost sale due to a customer coming to us with a previously held stigma about a factory manufactured home.

etc.?

SCHDM: Are there, or have there been, any hurdles to clear in terms of municipal bylaws and zoning approvals,

CMH: Click Modular Homes are CSA approved and as such have been welcomed by local districts and municipalities up and down the Sunshine Coast, throughout the Howe Sound corridor and North Vancouver. SCHDM: How long have you been building Click Homes on the Coast and where do you see the company 10 years down the road from now? CMH: Click is the byproduct of over 20 years of custom home design and construction here on the Sunshine Coast. Click Modular started in 2009 and we have been in the business of factory manufactured homes ever since, with over 75 buildings and homes having been constructed in that time. - B. Ferguson

To quote Stephanie, “good design is a process; I rely on my skills, education and the trust of my clients to help turn a concept into a functioning, beautiful space that they will enjoy for years to come. I do not design for myself, I listen to my clients and offer the best design solutions for their specific needs. The result is a home that they love and work that I am proud to stand behind.” -Submitted

ern’s Furniture and Home Decor in Gibsons is one of those places I’ve driven by a hundred times but have never stopped and gone inside. With its non-descript sign and low-key frontage, it could almost be mistaken for a standard run of the mill furniture store. But, as is so often the case here on the Coast, looks can be very deceiving. The other day I decided to stop in to have a look around. What a delightful surprise. Whoever coined the phrase “never judge a book by its cover” must have had this place in mind. The shop itself, at over 8,000 square feet, is much larger than the outside would suggest and it is literally brimming with an incredible selection of everything you could imagine for furnishing a new home, adding a unique new piece or two to your condo, or just updating a tired old look.

ultra-relaxing recliners, and overstuffed leather couches this is a place where you could spend hours (I did) just relaxing and soaking up the ambience. They also feature an excellent collection of Canadian-made fabric sofas and chairs with hundreds of fabric choices to choose from. If you don’t see exactly what you’re looking for on the floor they will gladly order and build you a custom piece. At Kern’s you’ll also find a fantastic selection of home decor pieces including original art, wall hangings, centrepieces and even beautiful vases with silk plants that you would swear are real. Not to mention an eclectic assortment of some of the more unusual knick-knacks I have seen on the Coast.

Solid Acacia Century King Bed Frame and Night Stands

If bedding and towels are on your list, you’re definitely in the right place. An entire wing of the store is dedicated to just that. They carry an incredible selection of designer bedding and accessories imported from major U.S. department stores. Famous brand names like Calvin Klein, Martha Stewart, Vera Wang and more at discount prices. I don’t know about you but I love a good bargain especially when it’s on a quality product. I hadn’t planned on (nor am I in the habit of ) spending two hours in a furniture and home decor store but then I had the pleasure of meeting the Kern family. Walter, Beryl, and their daughter Sandy, the power trio and namesake behind this long-established Sunshine Coast family business.

The ladies gave me a little bit of background on the origins of the business before Walter could be convinced to come down off the roof and join us. It seems that Walter, now approaching his 78th birthday, still loves to be hands on when it comes to all things related to Kern’s. This includes climbing up on the roof along with the crew to repair a leak. As it turns out Kern’s has

been around for decades and as any long-time Coaster would know the Kerns are a very familiar name here. Walter and Beryl first opened Kern’s as a television and consumer electronics business back in 1973 later converting into a furniture rental business and eventually morphing into its current reincarnation as the Coast’s premier furniture and home decor showroom. While Walter is busy climbing up on rooftops, Beryl is occupied with redesigning the showroom and supporting local charities and community initiatives (last year alone the Kern family donated over $30,000 to worthwhile causes including $9,000 to the women’s shelter). Sandy continues the family legacy by taking the company in a whole new direction, by expanding their online presence and reaching out through the internet she has already brought in a loyal following of new customers from all across Canada, the U.S. and as far away as Europe and Asia. With the introduction of their new website www.shopoutletcanada.com, Sandy continues the Kern family tradition of innovation and adapting to an ever-changing market. The business, like the Kern family themselves, have somehow always managed to keep current and relevant; maybe that’s one of the reasons why they are still at the forefront of the home furnishings business and still climbing ladders.

They say time flies when you’re in good company. Well before I Sleigh realized it I had been there for over two hours (maybe a little bit to Bed do with the incredibly comfortable leather armchair I had sunken into) when coincidentally, as we were saying our goodbyes a familiar figure walked through the front door. It was Susan Attiana the publisher of the Local Weekly and more recently of this magazine. It seems she and her husband Zora were here to do a little furniture shopping. I guess it’s true... good news does travel fast here on the Sunshine Coast. -B. Ferguson - Duane Burnett Photos

Decisions, Decisions...

Q

uartz or granite, limestone or soapstone, laminate or travertine, marble or glass. Which material to choose?

This is one of the more perplexing questions and most important decisions that anyone who is planning a renovation or a new kitchen is faced with. In order to shed a little light on the subject we caught up with a local countertop expert that most of those involved in construction and the building trades here on the Coast already know well. I’m talking about John Cimbala from House of Stone. John has been serving the Sunshine Coast community for over 10 years and is the “go to guy” when it comes to countertops. Before we get into the different materials and why you might want to choose one over another, there are a couple of things you need to know about the fabrication process. Firstly the process of

cutting is, except for a good deal of elbow grease in the hand polishing process, mostly computerized these days. This is done at the factory that supplies the product. In John’s case this would be Apex Granite, a 30-year-old company in Vancouver that he has had a long relationship with. As you can probably imagine, the importance of initial measuring cannot be overstated and this small detail is absolutely imperative to a final perfect fit and a professional looking finished project. That’s why John keeps busy year-round and works mostly based on word of mouth referrals. Of course, there are always budgeting considerations but we wanted to know what other factors people should consider. Here are a few comparisons. Marble The gray-toned veining in marble is aesthetically pleasing and is often the material of choice for

those wanting a more luxurious look in the kitchen. Marble gives a high-end look and the cost is comparable to granite. According to John, marble is not recommended due to its sensitivity to acid staining such as lemon juice or red wine. Granite Generally speaking granite has in the past been the top choice of most people. Traditional granite countertops offer a high-end look while providing a durable work surface. Although due to recent developments in quartz stone products quartz has taken the lead in the case of John’s business, 95 per cent of his clients are now going with quartz. Here on the Coast the cost of granite and quartz are comparable, but natural granite requires quite a bit more care than manufactured quartz to keep its good looks. Quartz Quartz countertops are an excellent option and besides being particularly beautiful they are also really low maintenance. They are stain, acid, scratch, heat and impact resistant, and due to their non-porous surface they don’t require sealing like natural stone countertops. They are also available in a huge range of colors and patterns. Here on the Coast, quartz ranks top in popularity. Soapstone Soapstone is not as common as some of the other options. It is a non-porous natural stone that is highly susceptible to scratching and scaring. It is available in a range of tones from light to dark gray and features subtle veining similar to marble but less defined. Unlike other natural stones, soap stone will either require a top coat sealer or a regular rub with mineral oil. - B. Ferguson

The Art of Quilting

W

oodpecker Ridge Studios is much more than an artists studio. It is a centre of learning and artistic expression that is solely dedicated to creating, teaching and perpetuating the fine art of quilt making. Not necessarily the type of quilt your grandmother used to make, although they do make those as well, I’m talking about quilts with a contemporary flair. In fact, some of the pieces would be better suited as a wall hanging in the lobby of a high-end resort or the entrance of a luxury home as opposed to a bed cover. Although, people do use them for both. Recently, Tess Strauss, and her business partner Gloria Nidzgorski, the dynamic duo behind Woodpecker Ridge Studios toured me around their studio, an idyllic compound of beautifully manicured grounds and orderly foot paths where they also run a series of workshops and informal drop-ins that they hope to one day expand into an all-inclusive three- to five-day retreat for beginners as well as quilting aficionados. Modern day quilt making is a combination of computer assisted designs and good old-fashioned hand stitching. It often requires a collaboration of two separate skill sets. In the case of Tess and Gloria, both are equally skilled in creating the top sheet which consists of the hand stitched mosaic pattern, as well as operation of the long arm stitching machine, the Gammill (the advanced computer assisted design monstrosity that costs more than most people’s car) is hand guided in intricate designs which bond three separate layers of fabric and batting to creating what can only be called a masterpiece of textiles. - B.
