Cougar Ladies remembered Sisters Minnie and Bergie Solberg (known as ‘Mountain Minnie’ and ‘the Cougar Lady’), true Coast originals and pioneers, grew up and grew old in their homestead on the far shores of Porpoise Bay. In the words of the song, they had “no phone, no lights, no motor cars; not a single luxury.” Didn’t need ‘em, didn’t want ‘em. With goats for company and a rowboat to bring them to the bright lights of Sechelt from time to time, Minnie and Bergie were content to live their lives off the grid, occasionally stumping in to the Village Restaurant for a plate of liver and onions.

We follow an emergent learning model – to follow the student’s lead and support their curiosity and direction. Sometimes the student seems shy, hesitant

to discover – and then you have to wonder, are they just shy, or have they just not been given permission to reach out? My experience is, the student looks forward to learning, when they are directly involved in the process.” Wright has been teaching since 1996; he opened The Sound in March, 2011.

Wright, who also goes by the performance name of Steve Weave, serves as musical director for the Rainforest Circus at the annual Synchronicity Festival, and was coordinator of the community collaboration recording Across the Lines featuring local musicians and residents of Christensen Village assisted living centre.

more limited, many species will also use human structures like barns, bridges, attics and man-made bat boxes. Scientists are still learning how to create suitable roosting habitat for bats, and you can help with the Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project’s “Homes for Bats” study. Editorial Opinion Recalling the telephone Gazing on the wide array of new phone products on display at the local mall recently brought to mind Dana Carvey’s Grumpy Old Man on Saturday Night Live (back when it was funny). “In my day,” he’d rant, “we didn’t have tech-nolo-gee. We didn’t have these fancydancy video games. We made up games like ‘Chew the Bark Off a Tree.’ And we liked it. We loved it!’ This was back before cell phones, of course.

Faced with iPhones and BlackBerry in their myriad incarnations, not to mention the lesser names and all their incarnations, and iPads, and thinkPads, and so forth, all of which are carefully programmed to be obsolete inside of a month and a half, one wonders – how did we let this happen? How did we not just allow planned obsolescence to accelerate to the current pace – how did we come to welcome it? For the phone addicts do welcome those shiny new versions of last month’s technology, with this month’s bell or whistle. And flush with their new toys, the phone fashionistas then heap scorn on that outdated but perfectly functional equipment that is quite capable of sending and receiving telephone calls.

Back in the day, our phone was attached to the wall.

It was big, solid, never broke down, never went out of fashion (black – it goes with everything) and it wasn’t going anywhere. It was in the hall, where everyone heard everyone else’s conversation. Back in the day, this was a source of some embarrassment – not like current social etiquette, where intimate conversations are shouted out on public transit for the whole immediate world to enjoy. Back in the day, when the phone rang, someone would answer it. If we were outside, out of the house, or out of town, then no one answered it. And the caller – no fool he – would deduce that we were outside, out of the house or out of town and they would call back. Or, if it the call was unimportant, they would forget about it. No one felt deprived by missing a call. (Unless it was a week before the Big Dance and that dreamy Whatsisname said he’d call – in which case, the callee did not leave the house for fear of missing the caller, or having the call intercepted by a parent or sibling.)

Today, the heavy wall phone turns up in antique shops, priced to clear and eagerly snapped up by nostalgic Boomers and younger collectors with a sense of humour. In the past decade, we’ve moved into a time where everyone is literally in everyone else’s pocket, programmed into tiny perfect cellpones, linked immediately and irrevocably. There is no escape. Let a call go to voice mail, and later retrieve an accusing “why didn’t you answer your phone?” message.

Oh for the day when the phone was a utility, and knew its place. Recall the wall phone; expel the cell.

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Token gesture of hypocrisy I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at Sechelt on Monday 11th.

It was well conducted and entirely appropriate to the occasion: the lovely clear voice of the young woman who led the singing of the national anthem and gave us a heartfelt and beautifully modulated reading of “Flanders Fields” and the fine prayer by the chaplain.

But I had to leave when faced with the appalling hypocrisy of a Federal government which steps up to lay a wreath “in grateful remembrance of those who serve and have served” and yet sees fit to strip returned service- men and -women of a proper pension and medical care, replacing them with a single payment for life.

Perhaps in future, if this token gesture is felt to be necessary, it could be made at the very end of the ceremony, after those to whom it really means something have laid their own wreaths.

“Actual scientific evidence” offered Sharon Crawford’s opinion on smart meters and wireless signals is generally accepted by the majority whose source of information

is limited to the mainstream media in which corporations and governments have the controlling interest.

For some “actual scientific evidence” we suggest reading the following: The Bioinitiative Report of 2012 , 1479 pages by 29 authors from ten countries, including 10 medical doctors, 21 PhD’s and 3 Masters Degrees.

Jerry Flynn and Barrie Trower who have spent their lives working on microwaves as weapons come to the same conclusions as the scientists.

Jerry Flynn’s Intervenor Final Written Submission to the B.C. Utilities Commission is another excellent source with many websites for corroboration.

It might be of further interest to know that Pacific Gas & Electric in California admitted in a court of law in 2012 that a smart meter sends wireless signals virtually 24/7/365. Silver Springs Networks admitted also in 2012 to the California Public Utilities Commission that their smart meters were active virtually non-stop.

Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 allows 10,000 times the exposure limit of Austria’s, and only recognizes the heating effect of electromagnetic radiation on the skin as admitted under oath in

2013 by James McNamee, a Health Canada scientist.

None of the non-thermal, i.e. biological, effects on cells and DNA are considered. The Code doesn’t even recognize different exposure limits are needed for different forms of life. Health Canada hasn’t protected us in the past and isn’t protecting us now.

Susan Crawford is correct in one respect. We are living in a dense electromagnetic smog. It’s over time for change.

Last week, someone obviously decided to do a ‘fall cleaning’ of unwanted items: an old Caloric dishwasher, youth bicycle, green plastic garbage can full of junk, plastic toy guns, other toys, kids’ fishing rods and reels, electronics, exercise equipment, etc.

But instead of a legitimate garbage dump or a transfer station, all this – and much more – was dumped on Crown land,

right on a spur road off of Sechelt-Roberts Forest Service Road #2.

Section 67 of BC Land Act does make dumping refuse on Crown land an offense, and Sec. 68 stipulates a maximum penalty of $20,000 and/or 60 days in jail upon conviction. Apart from being illegal, the practice is harmful to the environment and wildlife, and detracts from the legitimate recreational uses of Crown land.

So, if you recognize items on the list or in the photo above, and paid someone to take them to the dump last week, you were ‘had.’

Please contact your ‘guy’ and tell him to make things right, or you will contact the authorities.

If – heaven forbid – you decided to dump your own garbage up there, shame on you – and now go and clean it up. By the way, among the items were store receipts and items with serial numbers that were likely registered for manufacturer’s warranty - it would be simple for the authorities to identify the owners, just from this information.

How about this: When we hire contractors to get rid of garbage, lets demand real proof that it actually ends up at a transfer station, not in the wilderness. No proof?

Simply hire someone else.

On their annual visit to Burma in November, 2012, Wendy Bodt (right) and Deirdre Pearson watched the team’s first game played in the new uniforms.

Wendy and Deirdre nursed in an AIDS orphanage in 1998, and first recognized the great need for medical and other supplies.

That year, they were able to deliver 700 pounds of medical supplies to Dr. Cynthia Maung (a refugee herself, whose story has been written up in Readers’ Digest twice) at the Thai/Burma border. At that time the military were very restrictive and refugees were unable to return to their country.

Deirdre and Wendy fell in love with the Burmese peo-

ple, and since then have been fundraising with the help of volunteers through garage sales, bottle drives, silent auctions and private donations.

Although Calvary Baptist church assists them financially through their mission outreach, the two former nurses are not affiliated with any religious organization.

Over the years, their community fundraising efforts have resulted in the purchase of medical supplies, a rice paddy, new buildings, school fees and supplies, and an all-important truck to shuttle the children to school during the monsoon season.

They even purchased two pregnant cows for Garden Home, which the children named Wendy and Deirdre.

We are all becoming more aware of our environment and how our daily habits and purchasing decisions affect our climate. From bicycling to recycling, just about everyone is doing something to reduce his or her impact on the environment.

This month, we are featuring a special collaboration between young people and those over 55 in a lecture co-sponsored by Capilano University’s Eldercollege and Earthworks programs and School District 46 students in Grades 10 through 12. Students from the Chatelech Secondary Leadership club will host and facilitate

the event, and will find out how they can become involved at a personal and future professional level.

The lecture featuring Dr. Patrick Walden from UBC’s Triumf Research Facility will be held at the Chatelech Auditorium on Wednesday, November 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. Dr. Walden will speak on climate change based on scientific evidence accepted by the U.N. International Panel on Climate Change and will examine the options of replacing much of our primary energy with renewable and Nuclear Energy. The lecture will be part of EarthWorks, a lecture, film, and field trip series with

an environmental stewardship and interdisciplinary flavour hosted by Capilano University. EarthWorks’ mission is to educate and inspire students as well as members of the campus and local community to understand complex environmental issues from a multi-disciplinary perspective enabling all to take action for positive change.

This month, let’s all reflect on the steps we are taking to reduce our impact, and take inspiration from the young people and the elders in our community as they join hands to forge new understanding.

Resource persons from the Town of Gibsons, the SCRD, and Rogers Communications will be there to provide information and answer questions. A facilitator will be on hand to support information exchange and thoughtful discussion.

Point Road. This design allows for 118 rooms, up from the previous 110. The 40-unit residential tower is slightly lower, rising 98 feet (29.4 meters) at the waterfront and 55 feet (16.5 meters) at Gower Point.

The staff report presented to Council in July, 2013, reviewed the heights and mass of the previous structure and indicated that a case could be made for acceptance according to principles of Smart Growth, and other Town planning documents – but other issues first needed to be clarified, particularly the economic, archeological and site impacts on the community, provision for sea level rise, and parking.

Last spring the board and staff of the Gibsons & District Public Library completed a Strategic Plan for 2013 – 2018. The plan identifies new strategic directions for the library including, advancing the library’s position as The Learning Place in the community. It was recognized in order to achieve this goal the library needed to develop a marketing plan to raise the awareness of the learning opportunities in the library. Our new logo highlights the idea that today’s library isn’t like the ones of 30 or even 10 years

ago. Modern libraries are vibrant places where members gather to explore, share and communicate.

The emphasis on “a”, the first letter of the alphabet eludes to the notion of a beginning. The tagline “Stories to tell” evokes the idea of participation and engagement with the library in an active way. By using the library’s services one can enjoy the wonderful stories offered in a broad range of media, but also, these materials give you impetus to tell people your own stories.

An additional goal of the strategic plan is to offer computer and technical training to our members.

We all find it difficult to keep up with our ever changing technical world and now the library of-

fers one-on-one computer tutoring. If you need help with your smart phone, tablet or computer you can register for one-hour sessions with our computer youth intern. The youth intern can also help you with searching and downloading over 65,000 free ebooks from the library’s digital collection.

An Evening with Fidel enlightens, entertains Heather Jeal Editor

On the evening of November 22, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the man who made the term ‘Bay of Pigs’ a synonym for, not just defeat, but utter and humiliating defeat, steps onto the stage at Gibsons Heritage Playhouse for An Evening with Fidel.

Fidel Castro, as portrayed by writer/actor Tim Perez in his one-man tour-de-force performance, has survived – and his country with him – as the last bastion of Marxist Communism in the Western world. He survived a childhood of utter poverty to become a lawyer, a voracious reader of West-

ern literature and philosophy, feeding a hunger for knowledge and a ruthless ambition. “We can glean what he became in his adult life, from his childhood,” says Perez. “He didn’t like to be hit – and when he was hit, he hit back and hit back hard. There is really an interesting opportunity to connect the dots in his story.” Perez’ meticulous research over a period of nine years delving into Castro’s life has taken him all over the U.S. and Latin America – but not into Cuba itself.

As a U.S. citizen, he is forbidden access to the final pieces of the puzzle, the reality of Castro’s country.

Barely six months into its operation, the fledgling brewery went head to head against 14 other competitors in its class, and 14, 2013 came up golden.NovMcKinnon came to Persephone as Head Brewer from Russell Brewing in Ladner, arriving just as the company took possession of the property in May, 2013.

Persephone poured its first batch of ale in July, and the stout came out of the cask in late September. McKinnon recommends Stout-off Stout paired with the Faux Real Food Truck’s special deep-fried brussel sprouts.

Persephone ales and stout are available at the brewery (1053 Stewart Road at North Road, Gibsons) by the glass, in take-away ‘growlers’, and by the keg.

Fall offers an irresistible combination of cool weather, short days, and the Grey Cup. All of these just call out for something hearty, flavourful, and comforting – something that will also make one sit up and say “Howdy!”

Something like a big, steaming bowl of chili.

With the Gibsons Legion setting up for their seventh annual Grey Cup Chili Cook-off on Sunday, November 24, some competitors might like to try a slightly different take on the standard ‘bowl of the red.’

(Contestants will drop off their subission by 2 p.m. for judging at 2:30; all chili is donated to the Gibsons Legion for sale at half time.)

There’s chili as we know it – ground beef, tomatoes, beans – and then there’s Texas Chili.

The real thing. Not for vegetarians or the faint of heart.

Texans don’t let anything distract from the two main flavours in their chili – the beef and the chili powder. The beef should be well-marbled chuck roast, cut into oneinch cubes. (Some cooks use a mixture of chuck and venison for an extra dimension of taste.)

The chili powder should be home-ground, from a combination of dried chilis: ancho, pasilla, guacho, or even the unnamed dried chlis in the jars. (Gibsons IGA Marketplace has an interesting selection of specialty dried peppers. They are not with the packaged spices – look at the end of Aisle 9.) The peppers can be ground with a mortar and pestle, but for those with little patience and less time, an electric coffee grinder works better and faster. Wipe the grinder down with a paper towel quite thoroughly after grinding the peppers, or the next jolt of coffee will pack a substantial wallop.

Lightly season the meat

cubes with salt. Heat 2 tablespoons lard, coconut oil or olive oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat and brown the meat.

Work in small batches so the meat doesn’t ‘stew’, but browns quickly (should take about three minutes per batch.) Remove beef to a plate once it’s browned.

Lower heat to medium, and brown two chopped onions (about five minutes). Toss in four cloves of garlic, minced, and stir for about two minutes until garlic is translucent and golden – if it goes brown it will be bitter.

Return the beef to the pot and stir in one small can of tomato paste. Cook 10 minutes, stirring frequently and scraping the bottom of the pot. Add three tablespoons of chili powder, one tablespoon dried oregano, one tablespoon sweet (Hungarian) paprika, one teaspoon ground cumin and cayenne to taste (if your home-made chili powder

lacks sufficient heat). Stir well. Add four cups water, bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer for two hours until meat is tender. Serve it up with big bowls, big spoons, a big bottle of Tabasco on the side, maybe a dollop of sour cream to add cool contrast and texture. And crusty bread for mopping up that good gravy.

This calls for an assertive beverage. Townsite Brewing manager Chloe Smith says “chili and beer go together like peanut butter and jelly.

“Texas style chili should definitely be paired with Tinhat IPA,” according to Chloe. “All those hops plus all that spice equals marriage made in heaven.

For anyone who is not a fan of hops, substitute our Suncoast Pale Ale which has a more malty base and less of a hoppy nose than Tinhat.” For Persephone fans, bring on the Stout-out Stout, or Golden Goddess for a milder quaff.

Olson working towards ‘solarification of the Coast’ With Hydro rates on the rise, tapping into the sun’s energy makes sense Heather Jeal Editor

Two new banks of solar panels installed at Gibsons Recycling Depot (GRD) are now capable of producing 4,500 watts of electricity on a sunny day, enough to fully charge one of GRD’s electric recycling vans. (On a rainy day, production drops to 10% of that). As the team from Olson Electric’s Alternative Power Systems division hoisted the panels into position atop the repurposed shipping container that housed the electric grid tie system, Depot owner Buddy Boyd enthused “Dennis Olson is doing some interesting things – getting heavier into electric vehicles and solar panels. We’re going to see the solarification of the Sunshine Coast if he has his way!”

Olson modestly noted that this installation is very typical of the “quite a few” solar packages and retrofits

his company has installed recently. “Solar is an up and coming thing,” Olson said, noting “in Canada, we’re way behind Europe on this. Last week, on a sunny, windy day, Germany generated 59 per cent of the nation’s energy from solar and wind power!”

Between 30 and 40 per cent of existing Sunshine Coast homes could benefit from solar power, Olson estimates: “any building with a clear exposure.” Although most panels are installed on rooftops, they can also be mounted on swivel bases (for homes without a south-facing exposure) or on the ground.

Each panel contains a network of individual photovoltaic cells (PVCs) that capture sunlight and convert it to electric current.

The power generated may be stored directly on BC Hydro’s power grid, connected through a ‘grid tie’ and the stored power is then credited to the homeowner’s account through

the SmartMeter (“one advantage of a SmartMeter,” he noted). For remote or ‘off-grid’ locations, power is used as a stand-alone system with battery backup.

Installation of most systems can range from a day to a week’s work.

An average Canadian family of four typically uses between 13,000 and 14,000 kilowatt hours of power each year. A full solar system (18 solar modules) can generate almost half the typical home’s energy needs, while significantly reducing CO2 consumption.

Because the systems are modular, each panel generates its own power. If one panel is affected by shadows, the others are not affected and continue to produce.

There is no limit to the number of units that may be installed – more can be added in future, as budget or demand permits.

The cost of solar systems can run from several hundred dollars for a ‘cabin system’ to almost $16,000 for a system that will produce over half the home’s energy needs (shipping and installation not included). The payback time – i.e. when the unit has paid for itself – depends not just on energy generated and used, but also on energy generated and sold to BC Hydro and the rates for each.

With BC Hydro rates estimated to rise 17 per cent over the next three years, tapping into the sun’s energy makes fiscal, and ecological, sense.

The temperature is starting to drop, the leaves are clogging up the streets and snow is beginning to fall in parts in parts of BC. Driving in the winter Nov. 14, 2013 season brings challenges no matter which part of the province you call home.

My remarks are aimed chiefly at truck owners but the message is common for all: driver and vehicles must be equally prepared.

In winter, braking and stopping vehicles of all NAPA 1144 kinds is perhaps where most of us get into trouble.

The tires play a critical role in stopping the vehicle, and so they need even more care and attention than in the other seasons.

Most SUVs have a passenger car tire classification with M+SOct. stamped on 31, 2013 the sidewall, for Mud and Snow and are considered all- season tires. If it is not, your vehicle must be fitted with tires suitable for any type of climate, even the most severe ones.

In winter the pressure of the tire must also be controlled more fre-

quently. This is because a reduction of the outside temperature causes a contraction of the air inside the tire, accelerating the normal and gradual pressure loss process by a value around one to two PSI for each 5 degrees Celsius decrease in temperature.

Contrary to popular opinion, a lower inflation pressure than normal does not improve tire traction on snow. It makes them much more prone to damage. Always remember that in any season and with any temperature, insufficient

Use brakes carefully.

Brake correctly.

It takes more time and distance to stop in icy conditions. Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the pavement.

Do not use the cruise control in winter conditions. Even roads that appear clear can have sudden slippery spots and the short touch of your

brakes to deactivate the cruise control feature can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle. Remember that your fourwheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster. Besides, many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. And don’t bank on your 4x4’s traction. Your 4x4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-wheel drive vehicle.

If your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not pump them in attempting to stop. The right way is to steer into the skid while applying the brake pedal evenly.

Look farther ahead in traffic than you normally do. Actions by cars and trucks will alert you quicker to problems and give you a split second extra time to react safely.

Since 1994, Helen Steeves has been an active contributor to the Sunshine Coast Golf Club, holding every position on its Ladies Executive, including Captain in 2001. Her club contributions did not end after her lengthy service on the Ladies Executive. In conjunction with her Zone and Provincial roles since 2000, she has provided extremely valuable consultation and support to every Ladies Club captain and executive committee since that time.

Helen has also been a valuable contributor to the Club overall. From 2000 to 2004, she sat on the Club Board of Directors, chaired the Greens Committee and worked tirelessly on the Constitution Committee.
