This Christmas, Matthew Drope and his family will be camped at BC Children’s Hospital. Matthew has a bone marrow disease called Aplastic Anemia, and has been in hospital since September. Currently he’s in remission from the disease as he undergoes chemotherapy that will kill his existing bone marrow; on December 20 he will receive new bone marrow from his younger brother

SCRD calls on public help with Ag Plan The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is nearing completion of an Agricultural Area Plan (“Ag Plan”) that will guide ongoing decision making about agriculture within the Sunshine Coast. After extensive public dialogue including focus groups, open houses, an opinion survey and other citizen engagement activities, the first draft of the plan is now complete.

“The Agricultural Area Plan process has been a great opportunity for residents, farmers and food advocates to connect with one another and think about the importance of food security in agriculture,” says Dale Peterson, Chair of the SCRD Agricultural Advisory Committee. “The draft plan has been developed with input from residents and farmers alike.”

SCRD Planner, Gregory Gebka, noted “the region’s Ag Plan is on track and nearing completion of its final stages. We encourage all residents, produc-

ers and those with interest in local food production to come and learn about the key recommendations and implementation opportunities.”

Open houses to present the draft plan will be held on Monday, December 2nd from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre, and on Tuesday, December 3rd from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Community Hall.

As part of the Ag Plan, a short video will be introduced at the December open houses featuring the past, present and future of farming on the Sunshine Coast.

The 14th annual Blackfish Pub Toy Lunch, to be held Tuesday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., promises to be the Coast’s biggest single toy-gathering event.

Each year, the pub offers lunch in exchange for a new toy for the Elves Club to distribute with their hampers. Owner George McDonnell notes that in its first year, the event gathered 250 new toys; last year, they exchanged “in the neighbourhood of 400 free lunches” in exchange for donated toys.

Although it’s not the pub’s biggest charitable fundraiser “it’s the one that creates the most interest,” McDonnell says. “Everyone thinks of kids and putting a smile on their faces, and giving toys at Christmas makes it happen.”

Editorial Opinion BC Ferries, Port of Metro Vancouver get sneaky Using the holidays as a distraction, it seems, BC Ferries and the Port of Metro Vancouver are slipping it to residents of Coastal communities on a couple of fronts. Do they really think no one will notice?

Late on a Friday afternoon before a long weekend, BC Ferries recently slid out its announcement of cuts to service and increasing rates, particularly by removing the free mid-week ride seniors enjoyed, replacing it with a standard 50 per cent discount. We noticed – yes, we did notice – the announcement made no mention of reducing inflated top-level salaries, reducing perks for the upper echelons (is that car and driver for the Top Guy really essential?) or even cutting back management and Board positions altogether.

Apparently, the subsidization of BC Ferries’ one per cent by the 99 per cent who actually rely on them as a vital transportation link will continue.

Last year, the Ferry Commissioner actually consulted with residents of Coastal communities dependent on the service as an essential transportation link. His report concluded that ferry fares had passed the tipping point, and at present levels were actually harming communities – sparking a migration of residents and harming prospects for economic growth. Regardless of this information, BC Ferries upped the fares in 2013. Predictably, visitors found other places to travel (Washington state, with its bargain ferry system, was a big draw), and even more homes went on the market as Coasters fled for a warmer economic climate. Apparently, the BCF brass have not figured out that there is a strong correlation between rising tariffs and dropping ridership.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, at the Cedars Inn in Gibsons, Coast residents have an opportunity to show BC Ferries they have indeed noticed their unworkable tactics are producing the wrong results for our communities.

The fiery Jef Keighley, Chair of Sunshine Coast Senior Citizens, reminds us “We encourage all who care about our community to join us to express our outrage at this government and to demand the government do what we told them last December at the same location in Gibsons, treat our ferries like we treat our highways, lower the fares and engage in real consultations with ferry dependent communities about what schedules are needed to meet the real needs of our respective citizens.”

Meanwhile, over at Port of Metro Vancouver, plans move ahead at top speed for the proposed transport of doublebargeloads of thermal coal from a railhead in the Lower Mainland to Texada Island, for loading into single-hulled freighters bound for China. Residents of communities flanking the barges’ route have not been consulted or informed as to the possible health and environmental impacts of this project – because, it seems, appropriate studies have not been carried out. At a recent forum, leading experts pointed out that the impact on our seas, beaches, air, and economy have not been factored into this project. Most troubling, as Chief Gary Feschuk pointed out, the First Nations community have not been consulted. Chief Feschuk pointed out that the coal barges, with the off-spilling coal dust and other contaminants, will be travelling right through all the major salmon migration routes, and right through the midst of the herring spawning grounds. Did the Port of Vancouver think no one – particularly the First Nations – would notice?

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Setting it straight, by George In response to last week’s letter submitted by Jack Stein of Gibsons, I would like to state that I am appalled by the amount of misinformation that has been circulated, mostly by “naysayers” on Facebook and in letters regarding The George Hotel and Residences project.

First of all, contrary to Mr. Stein’s comment, the George project has NEVER been forwarded to Council before, nor has an application been rejected.

In fact, this is the FIRST time an application has ever been submitted.

Furthermore, the economic benefits of this project are far-reaching with millions of dollars of direct benefits in construction and hospitality industry jobs as well as municipal taxes. An estimated $5.3 million in direct hotel wages per annum will help to diversify the Gibsons economy and reduce unemployment. Spin-off revenue is projected at approximately $11 million in spending per year and has been determined by reputable hospitality industry economists. This will be measured through increased revenue for existing Gibsons Landing and Gibsons area merchants, businesses, restaurants, artists and artisans,

musicians, recreational and tourist services, locally grown food production companies, and many more local services and potential new businesses that will be required to meet the market demand for goods and services.

Ottawa failing veterans While I do not doubt Mr. Weston’s personal sincerity in placing a wreath on November 11, I find it hard to accept whatever he has to say on behalf of his government about veterans’ benefits, especially after my having read a National Post piece published on that same day. Anybody interested in what is happening across the nation can probably find the newspaper in the local library or by Googling “Barbara Kay, Ottawa fails veterans.”

More nurses needed While a lengthy patient at our Sunshine Coast’s busy new St. Mary’s Hos-

pital hardworking nurses, medical, health care, emergency, ambulatory, technical, and housekeeping staff gave me excellent care.

Thank you.

It became clear to me that our busy thoughtful stressed few nurses are overworked. A nurse told me that one nurse cares for eight patients during a 12hour shift. Another nurse told me that she worked at the Kelowna General Hospital where one nurse is responsible for 4 patients.

A heavy stressful workload and the lack of nurses isn’t good for patients’ and nurses’ health.

More nurses are needed to care for us at St.Mary’s Hospital.

On a recent frosty, brilliant Saturday, as I did my weekend errands I was struck by the industrious activity of Gibsons’ residents preparing for the coming winter. Pickups and station wagons were filled with the goods and materials their owners would need to carry out a pre-holiday spruce-up; householders cleaned their gutters to ensure that the coming rains would flow freely; and those who love their gardens were mulching, pruning, and wrapping treasured shrubs in burlap to protect them through their dormant season. We are blessed to live in such a beautiful town and, in no small measure, the beauty of our natural setting is enhanced by the diligent attention local residents pay to their homes.

Preventative maintenance and timely repair work are good investments in time and money, whether for an individual dwelling or at the municipal level. Like you, the Town of Gibsons is working hard to keep things in good repair and to make required improvements to ensure our infrastructure meets current and future needs. And like you, we need to plan

wisely and work within our resources if we are to protect the assets you entrust to our stewardship.

When we are planning our budget you may hear us speak of the need to plan our Annual Contribution for Asset Replacement, or ‘ACFAR’. In terms of funding, this means setting aside or investing a certain percentage of the value of our assets; focusing on core priorities; dedicating a portion of tax revenues towards specific essential projects; ensuring that municipal services are fairly priced; where necessary, deferring projects; and respecting the need for preventative maintenance, to avoid as best we can the need for urgent, unplanned and therefore more costly repairs to the municipal infrastructure

on which you depend.

We consider nature to be an integral part of our municipal infrastructure system, and similarly important to protect. Our ecosystem services include protecting such important assets as: the Gibsons aquifer, source of our renowned drinking water; Goosebird, Charman and Gibsons Creeks, which will play an important role in carrying the storm water we’re sure to be blessed with in the coming months; and our foreshore area, which protects our local shoreline from sea activity. Protecting and conserving these natural aspects of our infrastructure is not only important, there can be a clear financial benefit as well. One example is our 36 per cent reduction in water usage since 2009, which

saved the time and cost of building a second reservoir.

I began this message with a reference to home renovations and maintenance, and in some ways, keeping our town in good repair is rather like renovating a home not only filled with family, but subject to a steady stream of visitors. We appreciate your patience when a particular project slows down your commute or temporarily affects the appearance of your neighbourhood. We welcome your interest and your input as we move towards a service delivery model where we are not simply maintaining infrastructure, but protecting our natural assets, and delivering municipal services in the most natural, energy-efficient, reliable, and cost-effective manner possible.

Making progress in community partnerships Education Matters Silas White Chair, School District #46 School Board

Last week the Sunshine Coast Board of Education and Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) had our most positive and promising joint meeting in well over a decade, following up on probably the most successful intergovernmental meeting (including the other local governments, too) in recent memory.

In general, the best explanation for this collaborative atmosphere is a synchronicity of priorities, concerns and strategies. For one, both the Board of Education and SCRD have strategic plan objectives to build better relationships with one another, which is a good start!

Beyond that, we’re both specifically interested in rebuilding the “joint use” function, which essentially

refers to the two organizations working together to maximize the use of our public facilities, sites and services for both community and school use.

The SCRD has recently released a Parks and Recreation Master Plan, available on its website, that includes a recommendation to form a joint use task force that will “develop strategies that will lead to a better sharing of resources, identification of new sources of funding, and more community use of schools and community facilities for the maximum benefit of the residents of the Sunshine Coast.” Our Board voiced our support for such a direction during the development of the Plan, and now we’re keen to work with the SCRD to implement it.

We have an impressive legacy of joint use on the Sunshine Coast, including such projects as the Pender Harbour Pool and the Roberts Creek Gym-

nasium/Community Use Room (which is now open to public bookings, with no custodial fees, on Saturdays). However with the exception of some direct rural-area partnerships such as building the Chatelech ball field and enhancing the Halfmoon Bay Elementary soccer field, there has been no official joint use collaborations happening on the Sunshine Coast for about a decade.

To get joint use going again, our next step is to modernize the Master Joint Use Agreement between the two of us, which has had a few different incarnations since 1977, but in recent years has fallen out of use and relevance. Staff members of SD46 and the SCRD have been hard at work studying agreements from other communities and identifying best practices, local needs and a combined inventory of our local assets. We look forward to meeting again in the new

year to start constructing a new Agreement.

Another promising community partnership I witnessed last week was a climate change lecture

by Dr. Patrick Walden to Capilano University’s Eldercollege educational community (55 and older) and Chatelech Secondary students at the Chatelech Theatre. While we could’ve had far more students at this event, the model is incredibly promising to eventually complement classroom learning with expert community lecturers, and moreover, with interactive, intergenerational co-learning opportunities with the Eldercollege community. Our Board looks forward to building upon the excellent relationships we currently enjoy with the SCRD and Capilano University.

Pender Harbour’s Frank White started writing the story of his life as a pioneer BC truck driver in 1972 when he was nearly sixty.

It took him over four decades to finish his book and get it published, but at the age of ninety-nine, White has managed to do just that.

He will launch Milk Spills and One-Log Loads: Memories of a Pioneer Truck Driver ($32.95, Harbour Publishing) at the Pender Harbour School of Music on Sunday, December 1 from 2 to 4pm and everyone is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served and there will be a book signing, with book sales provided by The Earth Fair Store.

Milk Spills and OneLog Loads started out as a chronicle of White’s career in transportation, starting in the horse-and-buggy age and recording the growth of trucking in the BC freighting and logging industries, but it ended up as much more than that.

As Howard White (Frank White’s son and publisher) says in his introduction to the book, “There is an undeniable fascination in listening to a man talk about anything from the perspective of having observed it over the course of a whole century, be it the evolution of trucking, ladies fashions, sexual mores, or a hundred other things he touches upon in these pages. But I suspect the main exhibit here is Frank White himself, an unassuming man who in his plain-spoken way reminds us that the most ordinary-seeming life, on close inspection, can be found to be full of unexpected riches.”

Frank’s accounts of obstreperous men wrestling big timber are his memories of becoming his family’s designated driver at age twelve because his father couldn’t break the habit of yanking up on the steering wheel and yelling “whoa, damn you, whoa”; of collisions with streetcars and tsunamis of spilled milk; of roads clogged with dust-bowl jalopies; of the hysteria that gripped the BC coast after Pearl Harbor; of starting married life with a family of ten pigs; of a pet deer so dumb it would stand on a hot stove with its hooves smoking; of a toddler who mistook the deer’s droppings for raisins; of the vanished (thankfully) sport of hunting basking sharks; and of romantic interludes exploring idyllic islands and living off beach oysters.

Milk Spills and One-Log Loads has all the hair-raising road tales one could ask for, but in the end it is a moving story of personal growth, a book that stands beside The Curve of Time and Fishing with John as a vivid account of life as working people lived it on West Coast during the rough-and-tumble years of the early twentieth century.

Frank White is a former truck driver, logger, gas station operator, excavationist, waterworks technician and current homespun philosopher who lives in Garden Bay, BC, with his wife, the writer Edith Iglauer.

Create heritage ornaments at home Holiday decorating is a big part of the holiday season. Bins are taken out of the attic or garage, and decorations are once again given their opportunity to shine for several weeks before being packed away again.

Among the many decorations families use to deck the halls are ornaments that were made by hand.

This year creating homemade ornaments can be a crafty project that helps families make new holiday memories.

Christmas tree ornaments come in all shapes and sizes and often tell the stories of holiday traditions. There are several different ways to create personalized, do-it-yourself ornaments and leave the cheap, easily broken ornaments from the dollar stores behind.

Fun photo ornaments showcase how a family has changed and grown over the years. Experiment with different ways to create these ornaments. You can glue a photo to a ceramic ornament and cover it with decoupage glaze to set it permanently. Try purchasing clear, glass ornaments, then remove the top of the ornament, which is usually springloaded, before slipping a photo inside and replacing the top. You also can laminate a photo, punch a hole in the top and affix a ribbon.

The popularity of paintit-yourself pottery has led to an increase in ceramic and crafts shops across the country. During the holiday season such shops offer many holiday items that can be painted. Often the store will then fire the

Hand-drawn pictures can be made and laminated and hung on the tree.

Instead of traditional holiday lights, choose lights that look like candles while adorning the tree with wooden ornaments and strands of popcorn.

Forgo traditional wrapping paper. Instead of flashy, store-bought wrapping paper, wrap presents in brown paper and put presents under the tree as early as possi-

ble. Instead of store-bought gift tags, create your own and attach a candy cane or another candy to the gift.

Think nature with decorations. Items gathered from nature can give a home a rustic appeal during the holidays. Hang a homemade wreath on the front door and include pine cones and clippings from evergreen trees when adding decorative accents around the house. Coverage expands for vision- saving therapy The Ministry of Health is expanding a retinal disease treatment program to provide full coverage for vision-saving drug therapies for two diseases of the eye, announced Health Minister Terry Lake.

Patients with diabetic macular edema or retinal vein occlusion will receive full coverage of the cost of Lucentis (ranibizumab) and Avastin (bevacizumab) as part of their treatment by a retinal specialist. Previously, the coverage was only available for the wet form of age-related

macular degeneration.

“Vision loss can greatly impact a person’s life, both economically and socially,” said the health minister. “Today’s announcement means that vision-saving drug therapies will be available for more British Columbians, and will improve patients’ quality of life.”

Diabetic macular edema is a disease of the macula, a small area at the very centre of the retina, which can cause blurred vision and partial or complete loss of the patient’s central vision. Retinal vein occlusion is caused

when a blood clot blocks one of the tiny veins in the retina, and can lead to impaired vision and blindness.

The treatments for these two diseases will be provided by the province’s retinal specialists, ophthalmologists with extra training in diseases of the retina. Patients throughout British Columbia can see a retinal specialist by referral from a doctor or optometrist. Full coverage of these drugs provides retinal specialists with several options to provide the most appropriate care for each patient.

“This is a huge step forward in the fight to preserve vision in people with diabetic macular leakage or retinal vein occlusions,” said Dr. Derek Godinho, president of the Association of British Columbia Retinal Specialists. “With the expanded coverage, all of our patients will now have access to sight-saving therapy for these potentially blinding conditions. We commend the government for proceeding with this very important initiative.”

Nutrient-rich ‘Bounceberries’ add zip to salads, cereals and holiday meals Nutrient-rich cranberries, often termed a ‘superfood’ have long been touted for their health benefits. And – they’re tasty! The tart glossy red berries provide interesting counterpoint to sweet fruits in baking, sauces, chutneys and juices. Cranberry sauce adds a seasonal tang to traditional turkey, and cranberry chutney puts a special zip in roast beef or pork sandwiches.

Cranberries have also been called “bounceberries,” because ripe ones bounce, and “craneberries,” a poetic allusion to the fact that their pale pink blossoms look a bit like the heads of the cranes that frequent cranberry bogs.

Many cranberries are water-harvested – grown on low trailing vines floating atop in water in great sandy bogs to allow for easy gathering. This traditional cultivation method has a special health benefit. Recent research has shown that the anthocyanin content of cranberries (the healthgiving phytonutrients that give the berries their amazing red color) is increased in direct proportion to the amount of natural sunlight striking the berry.

Cranberries have long been valued for their ability to help prevent and treat urinary tract infections.

Now, recent studies suggest that this native American berry may also promote gastrointestinal and oral health, lower LDL and raise HDL (good) cholesterol, aid in recovery from stroke, and even help prevent cancer. Cranberries were used

by North American First Nations as a source of red dye, and medicinally, as a poultice for wounds since their astringent tannins contract tissues and help stop bleeding.

Fresh cranberries, which contain the highest levels of beneficial nutrients, are at their peak from October through December, just in time to add their festive hue, tart tangy flavor and numerous health protective effects to holiday meals.

When cranberries’ short fresh season is past, rely on unsweetened cranberry juice made from whole berries and dried or frozen cranberries.

The Cranberry Martini, or Crantini, is a variation of the classic 1930s Cosmopolitan cocktail. Refreshing at any time of the year, it makes a great aperitif for holiday meals.

For each cocktail, fill a cocktail shaker or mixing glass with ice.

Pour in 3½ oz. vodka and ½ oz. cranberry liqueur or cranberry juice.

Shake or stir, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with fresh or frozen cranberries.

Emphasize safety when decorating for the holidays Decking the halls for the holidays is a beloved tradition for many families. A home’s exterior festooned with lights help create a festive holiday mood, while stockings hung by the chimney and a Christmas tree in the living room bring that holiday cheer inside.

When decorating this holiday season, be sure to employ the following precautions so your holiday season is festive, decorative and safe.

According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, 150 home fires per year begin with holiday lights and other decorative lighting. Inspecting each set of lights for damage and discarding any damaged sets. When choosing lights, use only lights that have been certified for outdoor use on your home’s exterior, and never use outdoor lights inside.

Christmas trees are involved in hundreds of fires causing an average of 15 deaths each year. In addition, such fires cause an average of $13 million in property damage annually.

Artificial trees should be labeled as “Fire Resistant.”

When buying a live tree, make sure the tree is fresh.

The tree should be green, and its needles should be difficult to pull off of branches, which should not be easily breakable.

Tap the tree on the ground before purchasing it. If the tree loses a lot of needles, it isn’t fresh. Trees that aren’t fresh are more susceptible to going up in flames.

When choosing a spot for the tree, find a place that is away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators and vents. Trees placed away from heat sources can still dry out, creating a fire hazard even if the tree was

fresh and healthy when purchased. That’s because Christmas trees can quickly dry out in heated rooms.

Monitor the tree’s water levels every day, checking those levels in both the morning and at night before going to bed. This prevents the tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard, and it
