for a mini show ‘n shine. With a huge Canadian flag draped high above their ladder truck, members of the Gibsons Volunteer Fire Department hosted a steady stream of children - all of whom had to sound the horn in the truck’s cab. Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Gibsons teamed with the Salvation Army to produce that Canada Day staple – barbecued burgers and hot dogs
(possibly the best hot dogs on the Coast) while Mayor Wayne Rowe and Councillors Charlene San Jenko, Gerry Tretick and Lee Ann Johnson served up ‘birthday cake’ honouring the nation’s 145th anniversary. Grateful for the afternoon’s sunshine, event organizer Carol Hickman noted that the community event would not be possible without the many volunteers who participated.

Editorial Opinion Stop! Step away from that saltshaker …
O
nce the government decided to “protect us against ourselves” and started educating the public about the dangers of smoking, under the influence of the Minister of Health, I knew the first step had been taken on what will inevitably prove to be a long path. Who can argue that we should stop smoking, reduce our fat intake, eat healthier and reduce our sodium intake? No one. The Minister of Health has set a goal to make Canada the healthiest, most fit country in the world. Whew! Quite a goal. I predicted that the next target would be obesity and tada – within a few months, the dire warnings about obesity were being broadcast by Health Canada. Smoking and obesity were costing our health care systems too much money and so campaigns were mounted to if not eliminate, at least reduce these two killers. It’s nice that the Minister of Health spends hours staring into the dark, thinking about our welfare. Somewhere in the wee hours, he decided that not only should we eliminate obesity (which is frequently a matter of genetics, an imbalance or an illness rather than a choice), we should also push for Canadians to become the most physically fit country in the world. Our own MP John Weston donned cycle shorts and helmet and toured Whistler before launching National Health & Fitness week; in his press release he said that Canadians were among the least fit in the world and our government wants to change all of that. This week, we published yet another missive from Health Canada: put away your salt shakers, because as a country, Canadians consume extremely excessive amounts of sodium. To protect us from ourselves, they’re going to start a campaign to reduce sodium in everything, starting with food manufacturers, moving onto restaurants and then into wherever this ‘insidious killer’ may lurk. Every time the government sets an edict that may reduce the cost of our Health Care, they cross a very faint line between government-controlled policies and personal choice. Ask yourself how far you’ll allow government into your life. Who should be making the decisions on how you live? Now if Health Canada could eliminate stress from our lives and make cancer a thing of the past, we may just live a few years longer. That would mean a greater strain on the already shaky Canada Pension and Old Age Pension plans. Of course, the Minister of Health can respond like a waiter in a restaurant and say, “Sorry, that’s not my table…”
Letters to the Editor Bullying never intended
Last week’s editorial on bullying was obviously in reply to my letter regarding Bill C-38 and environmental issues. I am offering a sincere apology for what I, in my zeal, thought was a pun or play on words in order to highlight the severity of the problem. On re-reading the letter, it did have a sarcastic tone, which I did not intend, but was fueled by my feeling of helplessness at what is happening to our environment. I’ve worked alongside
politicians in many elections and can only admire their dedication and tireless energy. I’ve also been the recipient of bullying at different times in my life that have taken a good union, a doctor and the police to resolve and was horrified to think that what I wrote was construed as such. Again, my apology for writing an insensitive letter and thank you for a good editorial which is a reminder to me, and all, to remain within the realms of respect. Janet Fairfield, Roberts Creek
Letters to the Editor – Opinions A copy of this letter to the Mayor and Council of Sechelt was also sent to The Local for publication.
Wilson Creek Forest should be park I am writing to add my support to that of the many other Sunshine Coast residents who are working to make the ‘Wilson Creek Forest’ a special part of the Mount Elphinstone Park. This small gem of natural forest (15 hectares) is only a few minutes drive from Sechelt. I am not an activist and I’m not opposed to logging. But I would like to tell you about the great privilege I had recently of participating in a small interpretive hike through this special section of forest and learning firsthand about the magnificent mosses and other rare plants that grow out of the enormous nursing logs there. To walk through this forest is to experience a tremendous feeling of communion with the natural world. I would like to thank the Elphinstone Logging Focus group for developing this beautiful, low-impact hiking trail and for sharing their time and knowledge with people such as me. I learned that there are many things living in an unlogged forest that do not live in a forest that has been previously clearcut. It is awe-inspiring to witness
the old moss-strewn habitats, which grow up through layers of history and maintain the diverse web of life in these old forests. I have since learned how these habitats purify the air we breathe and how they capture the rainwater and filter it before it flows into the creeks; how they enrich the soil and transform it into a life-giving environment for so many different kinds of plants and animals – including humans. I learned how the huge firs, spruces and red and yellow cedars that rise so majestically above these tangled forests are only one expression of the intricate and fragile web of life. I also learned that the forestry map of the Sunshine Coast resembles a giant board game on which the logging companies have coloured-in most of the thousands of hectares of remaining old forest. Near the bottom of that map is this tiny forest, which is located just behind the community of Wilson Creek. It is important that all of us reinforce what I was told is the current position of the District of Sechelt, the SCRD and the BC government – i.e., that this gem of forest be preserved and treasured as a nature park for all citizens to enjoy. I would ask that the Sechelt Council give it the additional momentum it needs, and forge ahead now with the plan to
have this small forest included as a special section of the Mount Elphinstone Park. Bob O’Neill, Roberts Creek
May’s BC Ferry traffic report The traffic statistics from BC Ferries were conveyed late. Obviously not replacing staff vacancies, in their efforts to make internal financial savings, is cutting into staff times. Traffic declines experienced during so many past months appear to be leveling off, but May 2012, does not reflect a whole summer. Statistics show that for our Route Three the usage of experience cards is steadily rising. For passengers the usage for April-March 2011/12 was 46.2 per cent, for private vehicles 57.7 per cent. This compares with 2008/09 passengers 32.1 per cent and vehicles 40.7 per cent; and 1997 pre-paid tickets, passengers 23 per cent and vehicles 27.8 per cent. This more frequent use causes a reduction in the expected fare revenue (cap) and would allow BC Ferries to implement separate/ additional fare increases. (We have been told none are contemplated during 2012.) The freeloading of trucks and semis from Langdale to Horseshoe Bay continues. Our stats show the losses suffered. Government has passed legislation implementing
all the action envisaged by the Minister. The Ministry of Transport has published the request for proposals to appoint a facilitator who will conduct the public consultation on behalf of the ministry in this fall regarding the subject of “Connecting coastal communities in an affordable, efficient and sustainable manner”, which will include service reductions. On June 15, BC Ferries published the year-end results of 2011/12, showing a loss of $16.5 million ($ 22.5M when the pref. share dividend is included). The main cause for this loss are lower than anticipated tariff revenue and a 5.2 per cent increase in operating expenses. We attribute the insufficient tariff revenue (lower traffic) to the high ferry fares, whereas BC Ferries opine that it is due to the slow economy. BC Ferries hope to become again profitable in 2014. We expect that traffic will decline further unless there is a 25 per cent fare rollback as advocated by our FACs. Jakob Knaus, Gibsons
Pressure NDP as well as Tories John Weston’s cringeinducing opinion piece on why we should support Bill C-38 (The Local, June 14) toes the Tory party line. It serves to heighten (Letters continued on page 5)

Letters to the Editor – Opinions
(Continued from page 4) the justifiable anger of local people who are protesting against the essentially anti-democratic intent of Harper’s Bill. We understand what the Tories are really about. Bill C-38 is the prototype for legislation to speed up neo-conservative policy implemention behind the backs of most Canadians. Contrary to the misleading spin John Weston puts on Harper government policy, we are being prepared for a massive increase in the onset of hazardous de-regulation and loose licensing practices that place profits for a few (not jobs for many) above protection of an already endangered environment. Meantime, our public services (including Medicare, education and pension entitlements) are being eroded faster than most of us imagined. And now we are witnessing the deliberate chipping away at parliamentary democracy. But do we know what the NDP opposition is really about on these vital concerns? For sure, they are becoming more persistent in soliciting donations. But where are the details of policy alternatives to which they will firmly commit? Is the NDP in opposition, at both federal and provincial levels, just hopefully awaiting its turn to govern when the rising tide of angry discontent sweeps away the Harper Tories? We are right to ask how social democratic values NDP politicians seemingly espouse make them more trustworthy than their counterparts in the other mainstream parties. Apart from strategic action to make Harper’s neoconservative government look even worse than is already apparent, the NDP has a duty to improve the quality of political discourse and genuinely democratic engagement. Now is the time for those concerned about the decline of our democracy to pressure the NDP to do its job. Michael Collins, Halfmoon Bay
affected by the bitumen spilled in the river. The cleanup costs so far are $700 million, which is a low estimate. It’s not finished and there is a question whether they’ll finish cleaning up. It may not be economically feasible. This proposed Northern Pipeline is NOT a good idea. Why can’t our government see it? I am learning that bitumen becomes solid and sinks to the bottom of a river or ocean, creating submerged oil that is very difficult to clean up. When the sediment is disturbed, it breaks up and floats to the surface. As I listen, there is an announcement of two more oil spills in Alberta. It looks as if the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the President of the Canadian Pipeline Agency are preparing to handle oil spills better, and this is the action they’re taking. What about prevention, by not building the pipeline in the first place? Although decisions appear to have been made, there has been no action just inadequate testing and I do believe that we can prevent the flooding of the Peace River Valley and the Northern Gateway Oil pipeline from being built. I understand that Enbridge bought the damaged land that was near the Kalamazoo River, and I despair to imagine what they will do with that now. Many of us feel the Conservative government is making dangerous decisions, which aim to ruin our country and risk the lives and comfort of its people. I encourage all who care about our beautiful BC, its Coast and the lives and livelihood of its people to WRITE to your MP, newspaper editors and join us for change for a better Canada. Share your concerns freely! Think of our children and grandchildren, who will have to clean up this mess, if they can. Think positively. Stand up. Be heard and be counted. Learn from the Kalamazoo River
In a letter to the Union, Fisheries Minister Ashfield argues: “… he suggested it needed to be changed since it doesn’t provide enough options allowing industry to disrupt or contaminate fish habitat. “There are currently few tools to authorize pollution other than by detailed regulations,” Ashfield wrote in the June 14 letter to Todd Panas, president of the Union of Environment Workers. “For example, the amended Fisheries Act will provide flexibility and establish new tools to authorize deposits of deleterious substances.” Somehow “new tools to authorize pollution” and “deposits of deleterious substances” does not mesh with “protect(ing) Canada’s fisheries and the habitat that supports them”. Pray tell, Mr. Weston, how do you square that circle? Paul Johnston, Roberts Creek
Please don’t attack ELF I would like to thank our newspapers on the Coast for printing letters to the editor. I find most of these letters of a high standard, and they give Sunshine Coasters a voice. This is the first page I turn to every week. I, like many readers of last week’s letters to the editor, was appalled at Mr. Greenfield’s logging statements and blatant attack on ELF (Elphinstone Logging Focus). ELF is a non profit organization run solely by a few dedicated volunteers. The organization is not opposed to logging as such, but is opposed to indiscriminate and clear-cut logging as is happening on the Coast. ELF also organizes walks on Sundays, the last being attended by 50 plus people who were very distressed to find out that these ancient trees were going to be logged in the next few months. If you feel that indiscriminate logging is incorrect please take action by checking out ELF’s website: elphinstoneloggingfocus.org and maybe even donating to this cause. You will also see what ELF is all about. Thank you ELF and all for caring. Jack Stein, Gibsons This letter was sent to BC Timber Sales for publication in The Local
Stop logging of RC headwaters forest To: Norman Kempe, Planning Forester; Tom Jensen, Assistant Deputy Minister Forests Lands and Natural Resources; Don Hud-
son, Timber Sales Manager It has come to our attention that you are planning to put to tender BC Timber Sales Cutblock A84612 (DK045) this summer. As the organization of community members elected to represent Roberts Creek and its people, we want a moratorium on the sale and logging of this area. The cutblock is located between two Wildlife Habitat Areas established to protect the Marbled Murrelet seabird, which nests only in old-growth forests. It lies across the headwaters of two creeks, including Roberts Creek, the heart of our community. We want this precious area declared an Old Growth Management Area and preserved. The Roberts Creek Headwaters Forest, as we are calling this area, represents a unique and irreplaceable forest of 250 to 1,000 year old yellow cedars, with groves of small yew trees. We are concerned that this logging would destroy forever a potential tourist destination and therefore have shortsighted economic effects. But we are even more concerned about unknown effects on our own Roberts Creek, on our water, our fish, and our community. We support and request that a Land Resource Unit Plan be implemented for all of Mount Elphinstone and that no further timber sales go ahead until this is done. With ninety per cent of the mountain already logged, these few old growth areas must be saved. We welcome your response to our thoughts and would be happy to set up a community meeting to help you learn more about our hopes for our forests. The Roberts Creek Community Association (Note: people who want to write their own letters can get email addresses on the website www.loggingfocus.org)
patched by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) as part of the Canadian Coast Guard response to marine incidents. SCSAR volunteers are part of the Sunshine Coast Emergency Program and are dispatched by Emergency Management BC to locate and assist lost, missing or injured citizens on land. The cover photo of the Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue team gave the impression that the two volunteer fatalities were members of the SCSAR team, which was not the case. During a time of huge emotional loss and grief this error was particularly disturbing to the members of RCM SAR Unit 12. The members of RCM SAR Unit 12 are working hard to get back in operation in order to do what they signed on for which is to
assist marine vessels in distress and save lives. Another aspect of the story that was inaccurate is the part about the “regalia clad first nations offering up songs of mourning”. They were not there. I had a large part in organizing this memorial and the Sechelt Nation respectfully declined an invitation to participate in this memorial. As well, the caption on page 17 about the fly over incorrectly stated that the helicopter was a SAR Cormorant. The Local apologizes for these errors in the story, and wishes to thank both Mr. Elsner and Mr. Alec Tebbutt of SC SAR for bringing this to our attention and allowing The Local to set the record straight. As well, we sincerely apologize to all the members of the RCM SAR Unit 12 for any emotional distress we may have caused you.

The families had no money for a fancy building at the start of the Depression, but they worked together to mill timber and erect a practical one-room schoolhouse on land donated by May Dames, the daughter of Harbour pioneer Joe Gonsalves. The little schoolhouse at Irvines Landing provided education in grades one through eight for generations of students from 1931 until the mid-1960s, when new roads made it possible for Garden Bay students to Randy Wollen 1018 attend school in Madeira Park. The building was used as a community hall until late in the twentieth century, but recently it stood empty and neglected. In 2008, neighbourhood residents banded together to save the schoolhouse. In recent months, more than a dozen volunteers have been working with crew leaders Nigel Macklin and Len Lee to finish a new foundation, install modern washrooms and renovate the historic structure as a community meeting space. Your property tax dollar value I
n 2012, the average Sechelt residential property owner will pay $101 per month for the numerous services provided by the District of Sechelt. Such services include policing, garbage collection, sewage treatment services and maintenance of local roads, trails, and sidewalks. As well, your tax dollars help fund the operating costs for various public buildings such as our Library/District Office, the Seaside Centre, the RCMP detachment side of the Justice Services Building, Rockwood Lodge and Mission Point Park House. Finally, property taxes are used to maintain over 30 municipal parks, 47 beach accesses and 15 sports fields for public use as well as providing funding for
various arts and cultural programming. When you consider the extent of these services, your tax bill compares very favorably to the costs for other monthly household utilities such as electricity, cable/internet and telephone services. Having said this, no government likes to increase taxes. However, to not increase taxes to reflect higher operating costs whether for salaries, utilities or core services, is irresponsible. Further, like all municipalities, we face daunting challenges in the not-too-distant future in terms of the costs of replacing aging infrastructure. This is why Council directed that 1per cent of the total 3.5 per cent increase in 2012 be allocated to a fund to pay for future infrastructure costs.

Comparing the previous year’s bare land sales, in 2011 for the same time period we had 45 sales. Increase in sales over the previous month led to a slight decline in the monthly supply. Sechelt has consistently kept property taxes at a reasonable level and maintained our community as a great place to live, work and play. In fact, when we compare to other similar sized communities in the province, our tax rates are among the lowest. However, we need to (and will) do more. A key component of helping minimize future increases is to expand the number of commercial and industrial operations based in Sechelt. Such businesses pay taxes in Sechelt thereby reducing our reliance on residential property taxes. Council is hard at work on several initiatives to encourage new businesses to locate in Sechelt.
