Notes from the Inner Coast Notes from the Upper Mainland

aybe Brian Lee, editor of the Pender Harbour Spiel thought the summer was a little too bucolic for his taste and decided to spark a minor controversy by saying, tongue-in-cheek, that the part of the Sunshine Coast from Saltery Bay to Lund should not be considered part of the Sunshine Coast – claiming only the part from Langdale to Earls Cove should have that distinction.

First of all, no contest, referendum, poll or survey could deny that the Sunshine Coast – Upper and Lower – is one geographical area. Once called the Inner Coast, it was the territory of Coast Salish First Nations who had place names for almost every inch of it since time immemorial.

They did not make a distinction between the two peninsulas, although they had names for the land on either side of Jervis Inlet.

Secondly, the idea that the Lower Sunshine Coast shares a common history takes liberty with historical accuracy. In 1914 when Mr. Roberts was erecting his ‘Sunshine Belt’ sign on the wharf near the creek named after him, Pender Harbour was having about as much commercial interaction with Texada Island as it was with Roberts Creek. At the time there was no road connecting the communities of the Lower Sunshine Coast, but in a boat you could get off at stops all the way up the Inner Coast.

Nobody would claim that the Upper and Lower Sunshine Coast are alike. But – just as the Lower Coast is not part of the Lower Mainland, the Upper Coast is not ‘the Island’. Our differences

We are fraternal twins, very much alike but very different. One has a Folk Festival, the other a Blues Festival, one has the Festival of the Written Arts, the other the Kathaumixw Choir festival; one has Sea Fair, the other Sea Cavalcade, the Blackberry Festival and the Garlic Festival, the Pender Harbour Chamber Music festival and the Lund Shellfish Festival, the Celtic School of Music and the Symphony Academy, Lund Days, Creek Daze, and I could go on.

We are less-populated, partially-ignored, and often-forgotten. But we have our own police departments, mills, fire departments, islands, hospitals, beaches, school districts, mayors, regional districts, roller girl teams, farms, islands, hotels, resorts, government offices, restaurants, and seniors’ homes.

From someone who once lived on the lower Lower Sunshine Coast but who now lives in the middle Upper Sunshine Coast, I think my fellow Sunshine Coasters from the upper Lower Sunshine Coast in particular would agree that sunshine is sunshine, and that a coast is a coast, and we’re fortunate to have both.

Sunday, August 12, Yancey Bromley and her Chevy Malibu tore through a succession of elimination heats to become the 2012 Street Rod champion at the Summer Drag Races held on the 1/8 mile track at Sechelt Airport. Yancey, a regular competitor at the drag races since moving to the Coast seven years ago, coupled deft driving skills with her nitrous-oxide boosted 6 litre V-8 – the first woman to win the Street Rod class.

Bromley previously won the slightly slower SuperStreet class in 2010, and placed second in the Street Rod division in 2011. “It’s just something I always wanted to do, ever since I was a kid,” Bromley said. “When we moved up here, we saw they had these local drag races and thought we’d give it a try, just for fun.” Bromley’s husband modified their 16-year-old Chev, which she describes as “a typical rusty old grocery-getter.”

Editorial Opinion Prepare for the PST To many small and medium-sized business owners, it can feel as painful as a root canal, as complicated as the math required to land the Curiousity Rover on Mars and as unwelcome as the flatulent cousin who crashed on your couch last New Year’s Eve. ‘It’ – is the Provincial Sales Tax (PST)… and ‘it’ – is coming back.

One year after a referendum that saw BC voters dump the HST (while rightly dumping on the ham-fisted way the BC Government introduced the harmonized tax) bureaucrats in Victoria are busily gearing up for the transition on April 1, 2013.

It will be a time of mixed emotions for business operators. In July 2010, many were not sorry to see the back of the PST. It was a tax with such a dizzying array of rules and regulations, a business owner often had to figure out whether or not to charge tax based on the colour or cut of the item sold – or based on who the product was being sold to. Example: pencils sold to architects were taxable.

To artists? Not so much. Why? I’m sure a tax specialist could tell you, but I can’t.

Many others saw their businesses hit when the haircuts, travel agent fees, funerals and movie tickets, previously provincial tax exempt, were now seeing an extra seven per cent added to the retail price. And all absorbed the anger, uncertainty and frustration expressed by customers dealing with a tax they hadn’t asked for, and didn’t entirely understand.

Whatever their feelings – all BC business owners will have to make sure they’re prepared for the change.

Here is important information to help business owners prepare: • Depending on how long you’ve been in business, you’re going to have to register, or re-register for the PST. Registration begins January 2, 2013.

• Look for detailed instruction letters from the Ministry of Finance sometime in December, assuming the government meets its projected timelines.

• Register online, by phone, by fax or by mail.

• File and remit PST online once it’s up and running.

• Service BC centers will also be a point of information, delivery and contact during the registration process.

Government promises this will be a smooth transition, and you, the business owner, will have access to all the information and help you’ll need to welcome back PST. Unfortunately, the tax, and all its niggly rules, will come back in largely the way it went out.

But you won’t. Because you’ll be prepared.

Letters to the Editor Rave for Homesite Creek campsite We recently spent a couple of nights at an awesome campsite at Homesite Creek, between Sechelt and Halfmoon Bay. It’s a family-run, Forest Service campsite, aimed at families. It has a great pool on the creek for bathing and collecting water, some caves with 1,000 year-old

drawings to explore close by and an old prospectors’ cabin. Yes, there’s gold in Homesite Creek, and you can pan there. The manager, an ex logger and fisherman from Gibsons, said a woman visits regularly and takes away about an ounce a year! The manager knows a lot about the natural and social history of the area.

We saw red-legged frogs

Letters to the Editor – Opinions and nighthawks, the first I’d seen on the coast, and the manager talked of sighting alligator lizards, owls, elk and even grizzly. The family (Robert, Debbie, Josh, Thomas and Amelia) are very friendly. Lots of dogs and cats around. They care for the land, living much of the year on site. Highly recommended. Just $12 a night. Support family businesses Has anyone taken the time to find out why The Source store in Trail Bay Mall was recently forced to change their name and a new ‘corporate’ store suddenly appeared in the Tsain-ko Mall?

Well I did… and here is the reason.

Apparently Bell Canada who now own The Source, recently terminated the franchise contracts of many small mom-and-pop Source stores across Canada. Sechelt was one of several that were affected in small communities within BC. Bell Canada/The Source didn’t even have the decency to deliver the devastating news to the Sechelt owners in person, the decision was delivered via email. They were given 90 days to either change their company name/signage etc. or close their doors.

The Source (Bell) Electronics has since opened the new corporate store in Sechelt (Tsain-ko Mall).

Many families who invested in these franchises have been forced to close because The Source (Bell) Electronics is opening new corporate stores in their area.

The only way that our small family businesses can survive is if we, as consumers, continue to support them.

Dogs not always welcome I was really looking forward to a meet-and-greet at the reception for the Gibsons Public Art Gallery’s new location during the recent Art Stroll – until a dog ran around the place like it was in a park.

I once bought my daughter a goldfish – so I don’t hate animals. But I do have a right to attend a public function where food/drink is served to humans without dogs being present. I was told that dogs were allowed in the old building.

So, what if two, or three, or even five dog owners brought their pets to an event? What’s the cut-off number of animals allowed at functions? In my opinion - LEAVE YOUR ANIMALS AT HOME! The only choice I have is to never again attend func-

tions at the Gibsons Public Arts Gallery. No, I did not stay for the event. I was too ticked off that some people are so ignorant. I guess GPAG won’t be getting my support – I was scheduled to display my artwork next year. I hope the animal lovers – who can’t stay away from their pets for an hour or two – will compensate for lack of my donation.

Proposing a second nation Greetings to the wonderful people of the Sheshalt (sic) people.

People descended from aboriginals have recently defined themselves as ‘first’ nations.

I would like to propose that there is a second nation, made up of those English pioneers who introduced the industrial revolution to the first nations, sank their roots deep into the soil of Rupert’s Land, and proceeded to share the land with the first nations in the spirit of democracy.

Recently I spent the better part of three years in Alberta looking for descendants of those pioneers but failed to find any. Therefore, I would like to appoint myself as the spokesman for the second nation.

A Spokeswoman would be preferable.

In reality this land is the property of the second na-

tion, according to agreements among the European countries regarding colonization. The second nation is perfectly willing to share the land with the first nations and to consult with them regarding any plans that we have.

None of today’s governments have any right to exist. New issues are arising every day it seems, concerning natural resources and traditional sacred sites of the first nations. It is my conclusion that rather than trying to deal with officials of government, first nations only need to speak with the representatives of the second nation.

I know what trouble is.

I am used to dealing with it every day and I welcome challenges from all sources.

Elphinstone Logging Focus releases forest protection videos E

lphinstone Logging Focus (ELF) recently completed three videos on local Sunshine Coast forest protection campaigns. The videos were commissioned

by ELF and produced by Veronica Alice of XOV Films.

The short videos run from six to 14 minutes and feature the Day Road forest, the Wilson Creek forest and Roberts Creek Headwaters Ancient Forest.

“Veronica showed up one day to a forest walk we had organized into the Day Road forest in Roberts Creek with her highend video equipment and began shooting footage and interviewing participants. Within a few days she had completed a very engaging piece. We then hired her to do videos on the Wilson Creek forest and Roberts Creek Headwaters Ancient Forest.

These videos are excellent tools for us to present our message of the need for more forest protection on the lower Sunshine Coast.

T

he world of dog training is continually expanding with lots of different activities available for dogs and their people both locally and on the mainland.

Here are just a few: Tracking is a sport that builds on the dog’s natural ability to follow scent by training them to follow the scent we want. Dogs can be trained to follow scent of other animals, humans and natural gas for example.

There are several methods of training a dog for tracking and as the dog progresses the tracks are made more challenging by aging the tracks, changing the surface the tracks are laid on and by adding distractions.

Similar to tracking, in Search Sport dogs learn to search a small area for an item or a person until they locate the object of the search and then ‘indicate’ to the handler they have found the object of the search. Another search activity created for terriers and dachshunds is ‘earth dog’ – following the scent of a rat through tunnels made from bales of hay and other materials. For those who like to compete,

several levels of competition are offered in this sport from Junior to Masters.

Nosework is another scenting sport and fairly new to the pet world where dogs enjoy learning to discriminate between certain scents in a variety of locations.

Sheep herding is mentally and physically challenging for dogs. Starting with just a few sheep in a round pen, dogs learn technical skills and gain confidence as they learn quiet control of the flock, how to walk up to sheep quietly, to sit at a distance around sheep and to ‘down’, ‘sit’, ‘go bye’ or ‘come bye’ and ‘away’.

More advanced dogs learn to gather the flock, to separate sheep for the shepherd and to move sheep from one area to another.

Agility is a sport where the dog is directed through an obstacle course off leash and is fun for dogs and handlers alike. Several organizations offer opportunities to compete in this sport.

Rally-obedience (RallyO) is a combination of obedience and agility where a course is laid out for the dog and handler but, instead of obstacles, exercises are done throughout the course. Like Agility, RallyO is designed to be fun for dog and handler. Several organizations offer competitions for both purebred and mixed breed dogs.

The BC Arts Council (BCAC) a publicly funded, independent agency of the BC government, received $16,831,000 to support arts and culture in communities throughout the province during the 2012-13 fiscal year.

BioBlitz counts at Iris Griffith Centre A

fter weeks of preparation and planning and with the sun shining down, the gates were opened for the 5th annual Sunshine Coast BioBlitz Saturday, August 11.

What is a BioBlitz you ask? Event organizer Nadi Fleschhut says “it’s a 24hour count of everything that grows, creeps, crawls, hops, flies or slithers.”

Since the first BioBlitz in Washington, DC in 1996, BioBlitz’s have been carried out in a number of locations across the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Our Sunshine Coast BioBlitz is hosted by the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre, located on the picturesque Ruby Lake Lagoon, just outside of Madeira Park.

Families, scientists and nature lovers from across the Sunshine Coast and the lower mainland set about for a full day of exploring, recording and generally enjoying in the great outdoors.

The first thing you notice is the building itself. It is a world class example of just how beautiful a modern green designed building can look. It is being upgraded with many new elements including a reclamation water system, solar electric power, a green roof, and a solar water heating system which can provide hot water both for in-floor radiant heating and for general hot water needs. tive Centre has become a year round hub of activity for our community. It offers programs from the university level, right down to events designed specifically for secondary school students in order to have them learn more about their local environment. Almost every elementary student on the Sunshine Coast will be lucky enough to pass through these doors and find themselves exploring the world around them.

In true Sunshine Coast style, the event was not just science oriented, but also featured a summer evening filled with great music and fine food. An inspiring live performance by local marimba band ‘The Knotty Daughters’ had the

BioBlitz attendees smiling and swaying under the ever present heat of the sun. So keen was band member Linda Williams, that she never stopped shaking her shakers even as she danced over and spoke with the tow truck driver who’d arrived to tow her vehicle.

After the music finished and the BBQ’s were shut down, people gathered around the bonfire as Chair of the Iris Griffith Centre, Michael Jackson, introduced Sechelt-born Candace Campo to tell a captivating version of the creation story of the Sechelt nation. Photogs will ‘ride the pipe’ along proposed Enbridge route T

wo established professional photographers and long-time biking enthusiasts (Harleys, of course!) left the Sunshine Coast August 11 on the first leg of an ambitious threeweek motorcycle journey along the proposed route of the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project.

Daniel Sikorskyi of Halfmoon Bay and Paul Fletcher of Duncan – committed environmentalists who have vociferously expressed concern about the impact of the pipeline project – will “engage with and photograph the people who would be most affected by the pipeline and to capture the landscapes and seascape that would be negatively impacted by construction

or oil spills. This will require visiting many communities along the route, including First Nations,” according to Sikorskyi.

Fletcher and Sikorskyi will travel the pipeline route from Fort McMurray, Alberta, through Tumbler Ridge, Prince George, Burns Lake, Terrace and finally, Kitimat and the site of the proposed terminal.

“We’ll be creating a photographic portfolio as we go,” says Paul Fletcher, “along with a documentary video that we will make available to the media, environmental agencies, schools, libraries, individuals, to inform others about the issue and offer our images for viewing. We plan to create a traveling photo ex-

hibit, a book, and possibly a speaking tour.”

The duo will offer frequent updates on their website blog at ridethepipe.ca, as well as Facebook and Twitter. They encourage readers to contact them with opinions, concerns, ideas and suggestions for people they should contact during the ride for interviews, information, logistics and accommodation.

Fletcher added, “If you are on the side of information and education, we would truly appreciate your support and sponsorship. This project will affect many generations. We are the protectors of our environmental future, the thin green line between the environment and the big corporations and federal government.”

Local businesses shock event organizers

ith area merchants bemoaning the current economic climate, endless request for donations, and lack of community shopping support, Creek Daze organizers were shocked to receive an outpouring of generosity for their event, a fundraiser for the Roberts Creek Community Association.

“They have been hit hard so I didn’t expect much in donations,” said Kalawna Biggs in a recent Facebook post.

“People are stepping up for this event that has just unfolded like an improvisation of music.” Merchandise and gift certificates poured in for the three raffle prize baskets, now valued between $800 to $1,000 each with more donations arriving daily.

“This to me has been more love than I could have ever expected from our business community. We thank them so much,” said Biggs. “There was a moment I was ready to pack it all in and give up but through the storm came a gracious seascape view of bliss and gratitude. It paid off in so many amazing ways.”
