Cool local treat in the Creek atchworks Sorbet is an exciting, new local business and the Sunshine Coast’s best kept secret. You may not have heard of them yet, but chances are you will soon. Since their launch in August 2011, Batchworks has been serving local festivals, events, weddings and has it’s very own ‘scoop shoppe’ in downtown Roberts Creek. This product is different from regular gelato and other ice cream. In fact, you might call it revolutionary. The trick is, they put as much organic fruit and nuts as you can manage into each scoop. They make sure those fruits and nuts are from reputable sources and they try to source them as close to home as possible. They infuse the fruit and nuts with surprising herbs and spices to give them a new perspective on standard sorbet flavours. Now, that sounds like it should be enough to set them apart from the average if that were all they did, but there’s more. Imagine a creamy vanilla macadamia ice cream, delicate, flavourful and impossibly smooth. Or pistachio-honey ice cream that actually tastes like a handful of real, roasted pistachios with a touch of sweet honey. Deep, dark chocolate like none you’ve ever tasted – all without

Open a gate, close a gate
T
here are so many reasons why people often begin things, large or small, and then become overwhelmed or frustrated, so much so, that they choose to move on without finishing the task at hand. The summer holidays can provide the perfect backdrop for this type of behaviour because of the lack of routine and often hectic and not to mention, fun filled agendas that we force upon ourselves. Don’t forget though, throwing caution to the wind does have some benefits in the summer as it allows us to enjoy many of the great things that come our way, like evening BBQ’s with friends, walks on the beach with loved ones, and spontaneous trips to swim at Hotel Lake. Fall is the time when folks begin to focus on completing projects they had conveniently forgotten about in July and August. Fall is a time of action. So, with the children back in school, parents back to work, grandparents getting a well deserved break, and even the regular BC Ferries schedules back in effect, there does seem to be an underlying push to help find that steady rhythm in life once again. Note that recently The Fair at the PNE closed their gates for the season, relatives and tourists have started to leave the Coast and many other distractions have disappeared, giving people the time to reflect on lessons they’ve learned over the years to help them get things done. These life lessons may come from a parent, a teacher, a friend or even a total stranger, but almost everyone has an example of a teaching imparted upon them that motivates them to finish up things they’ve started. A lobster fisherman named Dan from Malignant Cove, Nova Scotia, taught one such lesson to me. This small fishing village was named after the sailing vessel Malignant, which ran aground during the American Revolution. The name Malignant Cove could itself be enough to base a Stephen King thriller on, but for the people that live in this maritime location, it is a quiet little town made up of rolling green hills overlooking the shores of the Northumberland Strait with PEI barely visible in the distance. About three quarters of the way up Dan’s long winding dirt driveway, and just before a steep hill, there is a gate, which is always shut. The reason for this is simple, Dan is not just a lobster fisherman, like his father before him, he is also a farmer that raises a few head of cattle and about a dozen or so sheep. If this gate is left open by accident, quickly animals run free and his phone rings with an angry neighbour cursing at him about how his sheep are eating their vegetables. For those of you who garden, you can understand that it doesn’t take very long for a dozen sheep to chow down on your greens. What you might not understand is just how hard it is to round up a bunch of sheep if you are not a trained sheep dog. After making this mistake once, Dan learned to always politely mention to people coming out to visit, “If you open a gate, close a gate.” This simple lesson became a mantra of mine throughout my university years to get assignments completed and I still use it to this day. Whether I’m part way through an important business project or just finishing cutting the lawn, as soon as I think about skipping out, I simply say to myself “open a gate, close a gate” and the job gets done. So, enjoy this fall, but try and remember to put one of your own life lessons back into action in order to close some of your open gates.
Letters to the Editor – Opinions Rural character of the Sunshine Coast I am writing to state that I believe the current Sunshine Coast Regional District council pays little heed to the principles of the Official Community Plan and zoning bylaws and is willing to accommodate virtually any development plan no matter how counter to community values. Just over a year ago, my family heard our neighbour was applying for OCP and bylaw amendments to rezone and subdivide. We were surprised to understand that first reading had already occurred and that there was to be a Public Information night in just over a week’s time. We attended this meeting and met many other neighbours who had serious concerns about this proposal and hoped that the OCP and zoning bylaws would be adhered to. We thought we should take a stand and oppose this application. Why not? Many immediate neighbours were against it and it required OCP and bylaw amendments – the explicit framework that is to guide our community. My family worked long and hard to try to get some input incorporated into this proposal – in the end nothing we suggested was included. Seems shocking when we were the ones maintaining zoning status quo. We researched the Halfmoon Bay OCP, zon-
ing bylaw documents and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s Land Titles Act and presented many relevant reasons why this rezoning should not occur or how it could be more neighbourhood friendly if it were to proceed. Instead a poorly configured waterfront lot with no permanent road access that will drastically reduce the privacy of immediate neighbours is being allowed. Such a shame. We need to keep our elected representatives accountable. So many people in the community are spending hours revising Official Community Plans to enhance the rural character of the Sunshine Coast and promote thoughtful development that has community benefit. As constituents, I urge you to follow closely the future development decisions of the SCRD council in the hope that more logical outcomes which sustain community values will result. Here is a link to the SCRD website where residents can follow Board decisions and find the dates of upcoming meetings: http://www.scrd.ca/Agen das-2012. Louise Bradford, Halfmoon Bay
Built by the community Does the Regional District Board understand what is going on at Connor Park and the vast number of huge concrete blocks citizens of
the rural areas are paying to install in order to create ever-expanding tiers. The effect of which will wipe out a favourite tobogganing run. Is all this expenditure to support seating for some kind of vaguely conceived entertainment space that has never been sanctioned by the community in which it is being built? Including outdoor lighting, a controversial issue at any time, but in this case foisted on us without any kind of notification, one conveniently aimed over an existing infield. Do they know that we have been paying for machinery to operate there over a number of months on a project seemingly being implemented by the seat of somebody’s pants? Have they been out to see what is going on here? This is not the ill-conceived but small feature whose drawings were circulated some months ago. This is looking more and more like an attempt to foist on us an ultra-expensive foundation for a hardball facility pretending, for now, to be something else. The earth to cover these blocks is being excavated from the west end of the field, widening it to the treeline (for now), a convenience for the small but obviously influential cadre of mens’ hardball players. This, despite development at Chatalech Secondary aimed at meeting the needs of the baseball
community, appropriately close to the commercial area of Sechelt. There has never been community sanction in Area B for any of this. On the contrary, a survey done just prior to the election of current Area B Director Gary Nohr gave low priority to hardball, during my last term on the Regional Board. During Nohr’s first term, an attempt to prioritize a hardball facility was made by the chair of a Connor Park advisory group in the absence of a quorum. That led to members of the group appearing before the Regional Board to complain of the undermining of due process and of what amounted to bullying by the chair and his recommendations seemingly put on hold. Is that individual’s sense of entitlement now part of the culture of the Board, evident in the sanctioning of unspecified and unrevealed expenditure of our property taxes on this scale to pander to a small band of influence-pedlars? Connor Park has for many years been a special place, integrated into the surrounding woods and neighbourhood. Deer browsed its edges, elk put in the occasional regal appearance. It was built by the community before being turned over to the Regional District. It is clear that the community was happy with it, as it was. (Letters continued on page 5)

Letters to the Editor – Opinions (Continued from page 4) Is expenditure on this kind of Palin-esque facility miles from the infrastructure to support it the Board’s idea of financial responsibility during tough economic times? John Marian, Halfmoon Bay
The science & soul of forest management A hand delivered private invitation as a “Wilson Creek stakeholder” prompted me to attend the recent so called “public meeting” on Monday, Aug. 27 held by Sechelt Community Projects Inc. dba Sunshine Coast Community Forest. An extensive two-hour verbal and power point hydrology report by Geoengineer, Glynnis Horel was delivered. All listened attentively to the science behind what seems like the obvious intention of the SCPI/SCCF to go ahead with their plans to cut an area in the Wilson Creek Watershed that is home to several 450 year old trees, left standing after a fire in the 1800s. When questioned in regards to this clearly “elder forest,” never logged. I witnessed members of the SCPI/SCCF first refuse to admit the trees were “old
growth,” and then to say that they would mark these trees and not log them. To destroy the web of connection these trees have enjoyed for so many years is to disrespect the very web of connection that supports life. It would be like removing the customs, family members and resources of an individual and expect them to continue to flourish. Hmmm, this sounds familiar. This rare stand of trees is in the care of each of us as residents and stewards of the Sunshine Coast. Water and fish are truly important, AND so is the soul of a community. This precious area of “elders” is a legacy worth protecting for our future children to experience. I do hope our grandchildren don’t feel the same about us in our elder years as we so blatantly disregard these senior members of our bio-community. The science has been received. It is now time for a public meeting to be called by the SCPI/SCCF to consider the Soul of Forestry stewardship. It was repeatedly mentioned the “direct loss of about $182,000,” and that if they were a “publicly traded company, I think there would have been a shareholder revolt.”
There is clearly a shareholder revolt underway. The shareholders of our community forest are ALL of the residents of the Sunshine Coast, not a few “stakeholders” who live and steward the Wilson Creek watershed! I also read in the 2011 Annual Report that in the delay of this cut, the SCPI/ SCCF relocated to a new office, which is “smaller, less expensive, more efficient, and more accessible to the public,” as well as “built some new or better relationships with a number of community groups and individuals.” Perhaps a moment of pause offered a profit of another sort. A narrow perception that focuses on financial profit of our Forestry Management team, is a place for deep inquiry. When the soul is left out of science we clearly experience losses too great to measure for the future of our community, children and world. I look forward to a public call to meet to broaden the conversation and perceptions of all concerned. Penny Allport, Wilson Creek
Dear Mayor and Council, I notice that there is a large sign in front of the Gibsons Garden Inn asking
the Town to re-zone this care facility so that it can be a motel once more. I suppose the building has changed hands. About 15 years ago this property was converted from a motel to a care home, presumably because a care home is more profitable. I don’t believe this has changed. Are existing motels full to capacity? I know that B&Bs are not and I understand that the Town had a study done re: the proposed waterfront hotel and found that it would not be economically feasible. For one thing the expense and inconvenience of our ferry system (especially since privatization) discourages tourists from visiting Gibsons, and the lack of proper marine facilities probably discourages boaters. What would happen to the people already living in Gibsons Garden Inn should this re-zoning be approved? I don’t have a friend or relative living there, but surely those of us in the baby boom generation will soon be providing a better market for elder care than the kind of market yet another motel can command. I urge council to refuse this re-zoning application. Anne Miles, Gibsons
World record sailor visits Gibsons J
eanne Socrates set a world record upon her return to the Victoria in early August, as the oldest woman to have sailed solo around the world. She recently turned 69 years old this past August and sails on The Nereida, a 38 foot cutter-rigged Najad 380 sailing vessel. Gibson’s resident Robyn Hume caught up with Jeanne at a friend’s house in Gibsons after meeting her almost 2 years ago when Jeanne’s voyage began. They shared a wonderful meal together and Jeanne recounted some tales of her journey. Her route took her around the five great Capes of the Southern Ocean: Cape Horn (South America), Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), Cape Leeuwin (South West Australia), the Cape of Tasmania, and the Cape of New Zealand. The last two Capes were sailed by Jeanne on this present trip for the first time. Being so far south, well into the Southern Ocean, these can be difficult areas to sail, as weather is so often nasty, especially coming into winter. She will have sailed over
28,800 miles with over 250 days at sea, during this circumnavigation. The trip was not nonstop, as she had planned when she left in October 2010. She’s planning to re-start that nonstop attempt from Victoria in October this year. Jeanne said “I felt decidedly cheated when I was knocked down in January last year while trying to play safe by heaving-to in bad weather before rounding Cape Horn. If that hadn’t happened, I’m convinced I’d have completed my nonstop attempt by May or June of last year. So I’m going to give it one last try. If that doesn’t work out, it clearly wasn’t meant to be and I’ll go back to relaxed cruising in the company of friends.” Jean told Robyn that she really enjoyed her trip to Gibsons in 2010 and remembered eating some really delicious ice cream. They also spoke at length about the food she brings on her trip, how important healthy food is to have and hard it is to plan meals months in advance. Jeanne also described
several lengthy repairs of The Nereida including everything from re-caulking, to new water lines, to refitting of the hydraulic autopilot system and anything in between. She has no financial sponsorship but several companies kindly help out with repair or replacement of onboard equipment. Donations are welcome via her website. Last December, Jeanne went back to the UK where she met both the Queen
and Prince Phillip at Buckingham Palace and was featured in the Royal Yachting Association’s Magazine. She also received an unexpected award from the Cruising Association during the London Boat Show in January. To follow Jean on her attempt to break another world record, this time as a solo, non-stop trip around the world, see her website, www.svnereida.com Jim Dorey, Editor

Roller Derby Action W
hile hockey players are mourning the loss of ice in the Sechelt arena, The Sunshine Coast Roller Girls (SCRG) are taking advantage of the opportunity. League President Hippy Longstalker said, “few leagues in BC have access to a dry land space like we have during the fall and winter seasons.” This makes the Sunshine Coast the perfect place to host derby teams for both bouts (derby matches) and training camps. Skilled skaters from all over western Canada are being invited to train and skate with our local Roller Girls. Roller derby is a contact sport with skaters rolling around a track. A bout (game) consists of a series of short matchups (jams) in which both teams try and allow their scoring player (the jammer) to lap members of the opposing team. With 1200 amateur leagues worldwide it has become the fastest growing woman’s sport. September marks the second time that the SCRG will be hitting the streets to invite new skaters to join their ranks. “It’s very important for our league’s growth to have fresh meat (new skaters) continuously signing up”, says Longstalker. “It’s just so exciting to see new skaters realize how much fun it is to join the derby community – making new friendships, improving overall fitness and most importantly hav-
ing lots of fun.” Although skaters must be a minimum of 18 years of age, there is no experience required and any skill level is welcome as the Roller Girl’s have a great training committee. Recruitment runs from September 15 October 15. Interested and keen members of the public are welcome to have a sneak peak to see what all the fuss is about. The Roller Girls practice twice a week at the Sechelt arena and if you are interested you can contact scrg.ca@gmail.com to find out exact times. The Sunshine Coast Roller Girls face off in their second home bout of the summer against the Haney Hooligans on September 15 at the Sechelt arena. If you haven’t seen the SCRG, this is your chance to witness what can only be described as an amazing spectacle of raw determination and team spirit. These talented athletes race around the track while delivering some pretty hard hip checks. It’s a sport that keeps fans on the edge of their seats and engaged throughout the match. If you are interested in any of the Roller Derby related activities, want to volunteer or just give support to your local league, contact scrg.ca@gmail.com and like them on Facebook. https:// www.facebook.com/SunshineCoastRollerGirls Jim Dorey, Editor

he BC government is investing $2 million to help BC farmers and food processors promote local foods, Agriculture Minister Don McRae announced today. The funding will allow local businesses and organizations to launch or expand their own marketing campaigns, so different sectors of BC’s diverse food industry can use customized promotions specific to their market and needs. It is anticipated the funding will be particularly helpful to small-scale producers and businesses looking to promote their products. Minister of Agriculture Don McRae said “Our government has long-supported local producers of foods and food products by lowering taxes and cutting needless red tape. Today we’re taking the next step in promoting local foods by supporting industry-led marketing campaigns. BC’s diverse food producers were

clear in their message to government that they want the freedom to promote their products as they see best, without the restrictions of a one-size-fits-all Buy BCtype program.” Businesses and organizations will be able to apply for matching funding from the provincial government for projects that promote local foods. Projects could include in-store promotions, social media or web campaigns, smartphone apps, traditional advertising, on-product labelling and food-tourism maps. Producers, stores, farmers markets, restaurants, processors and industry associations all will be eligible to participate. Building the local market for BC foods is a key commitment of government’s strategy, and a component of the BC Jobs Plan, to lead the agrifoods sector growth into a $14-billion-a-year industry by 2017. build a website and start a business. You have gathered enough knowledge and experience for now and it is time to communicate them more pointedly. Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) Over the next 18 months you will feel the push to build upon new foundations. Do not look back and affirm that the past does not equal the future. Acknowledge the abundance you already have and the opportunities to create more. Beyond acquisitions, this is a call to increase your overall sense and scope of personal power. Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) The North Node in your sign over the next 18 months implies that it is time to be more self-assertive and decisive. Your main task includes developing independence and breaking free from tendencies to lean upon others or to attempt to try to be all things to others for the sake of approval and harmony. Cultivate the confidence to stand strong in your truth. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) The 18 month cycle of the Moon’s Nodes is a call for you to transcend old mental and emotional patterns. You are meant to learn that imagination and inspiration are just as important, if not more so, than logic and facts. Lifestyle patterns and rhythms that no longer serve you must be dissolved. Deciphering what these are may be the first step. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) The needs of the many outweigh those of the few and the next 18 months will challenge you to acknowledge and act upon this realization. This includes participating in the world as one, among equals, neither standing above or below any other. Recognition and promotion of the ideals of democracy will emerge as top priorities. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) The 18 month cycle of Scorpio North Node will summon you to assume responsibility and Sudoku authority in AJ Pumps 1036 the world. For the love of movies!
Brindle & Glass’ bold new anthology, In The Flesh: Twenty Writers Explore the Body, which asks twenty writers a simple question: what will you reveal about a part of your body? Co-editor Lynne Van Luven (Life with My Girls) and contributors Candace Fertile (My Flat Cree Ass) and Julian Gunn (Reading Faces) will read from In the Flesh and other work in Gibsons on Saturday, September 15. Lynn Ujvary has offered Swish in its expansive new location at #309 – 287 Gower Point Road as the venue, which includes a seating area with harbour view. Light refreshments will be served, and there will be a cash bar. Meet the authors at 6:30 p.m. and the reading will begin at 7 p.m. Lynne Van Luven teaches writing at the University of Victoria and has edited or co-edited five other nonfiction books, most recently Somebody’s Child: Stories About Adoption. Expect to hear Van Luven’s frank and funny riff on bra shopping named Breastory. It recounts a visit to Lily’s Lingerie Limited in Halifax. “I felt my eyeballs sprung out of my head,” she writes of the colourful (and pricey) display. “I’m still wearing this bra, by the way, as we speak,” Van Luven revealed recently to CBCs North By Northwest host Cheryl Mackay. Van Luven co-edited In the Flesh with Salt Spring Island author Kathy Page. Candace Fertile is an instructor at Camosun College and a member of the editorial collective of

Room, Canada’s oldest literary magazine of women’s writing. Fertile says it takes chutzpah to admit you’re reading a book called Embracing Your Big Fat Ass. She explores the cultural relevance of the rear end. With wry humour, she takes on the taboo subject of the butt in all its sizes and shapes. Her essay takes in the Venus of Willendorf, Barbie, Catholic school, and the singular pleasures of lying down. Julian Gunn is an MA student at the University of Victoria and a poet. An earlier essay of his appeared in Nobody’s Father: Life Without Kids, also edited by Lynne. Gunn’s Having His Head Scanned For Science –
“Turns out you don’t have to be dead to be of use to a forensic anthropologist.” Gunn marvels. While helping with a scientific experiment, his face is scanned by the Scorpion, and he explores the complex terrain of friendship, gender, and government surveillance. Gunn’s family lives on the Sunshine Coast. Van Luven, Gunn, and Fertile share the book with Canadian literary luminaries Lorna Crozier, Brian Brett, and André Alexis, writing about the brain, the bones and – well, read the book to find out. know the blockbuster Battleship has been taking a lot of heat, but mostly from critics. It’s about a battleship fighting aliens. It’s not an Oscar contender, but the special effects are over the top and if you add lots of popcorn it will be highly entertaining. There haven’t been many
kid-flicks this summer, although PIRATES! Band of Misfits was a good one. Brought to you by the same studio that created Wallace & Gromit, it is a cheeky film, thick with one-liners and incredible detail. Watch for a dizzying number of TV series being released on DVD and Bluray.
Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, Grimm, Once Upon a Time, Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy are already here. Keep in mind that much of the best writing is happening in TV these days, as studios demonstrate what treating artists with respect can do in terms of keeping talent around.

pilot program during which time the District plans to conduct an educational campaign to encourage residents to take backyard waste to the landfill free of charge, use chipping and learn to compost and mulch. The 100 per cent backyard burn ban was difficult for some with extenuating situations and many residents don’t know how to mulch or compost, although it’s very easy. The goal at the end of two years is to reduce and eliminate backyard burning as people learn alternatives to burning. There seems to be some misunderstanding in the District regarding campfires. According to Bylaw
486, campfires are allowed if they are no more than one metre in height and one metre in diameter, do not create a spark or smoke nuisance to a neighbour and do not contravene Federal, Provincial or Fire Department regulations. Beginning in 2014, developers will incur a higher cost to dispose of wood waste. Hopefully, more residents will respond to the educational efforts of the District of Sechelt and will use non-burning methods to get rid of backyard waste. The health benefits will be substantial and health costs could be reduced. Submitted by Elizabeth McNeill

Dear Darla, I have a problem that 2012 I’ve never seen Sept. before6,in an advice column and I really don’t know how to handle it. My roommate and I have been sharing an apartment for almost a year. He doesn’t make a lot of money so I’ve been buying the lions share of the food and household items, plus sometimes I have to help him out with the rent. I don’t mind doing this because I do have a fairly well paying job and for the most part we live together quite well. We don’t really argue about anything and we mostly enjoy the time we spend together. Recently I happened to see an accounting statement that he left on the dining room table – this isn’t something that I looked for but I did see what it was and I read it. Maybe that was wrong of me but what I saw completely perplexed me. It seems that he has been sending a good deal of his already meager salary to

charities! Should I approach him about this? I feel bad criticizing him because it’s not like he’s gambling with it or anything bad, but I’m uncertain that he should be the one donating to charities right now. Please let me know what, if anything I should do about this. Thanks Confused Dear Confused, Let me enlighten you to one thing. Your roommate isn’t giving money to charity, YOU ARE. He’s cashing in Karma chips that you’ve been purchasing without any awareness on your part. He needs to realize some real life lessons here. You have to take care of your own business first. What you do with your surplus money is entirely your business. If he were living with someone that wasn’t as generous and giving as you are he’d probably be hungry and possibly homeless. What he’s doing is irresponsible and you need to sit him down and have a little chitty chat about life the universe and everything….. or at least how to manage his own finances. But hey, that’s just my opinion.

Ask the expert VHS disposal Further to Ask the expert in regards to Gibsons Recycling... The day after issue came out regarding where to take CD covers, VHS tapes and DVDs, we received a call at The Local office from a woman saying that she was told that Gibsons Recycling didn’t take these items. We decided to check and had a very informative phone conversation with Buddy, the owner. Gibsons Recycling just started taking these items a month ago, so it’s a fairly

88-month supply. Comparing the previous year’s bare land sales, in 2011 for the same time period we had 58 sales. This is the one stat that I find incredible. We have a seven-year supply of lots and we keep building more. I’m surprised to have not seen one letter to the editor or letter of support for improved ferry service to the Coast from a developer. Maybe some of those 2000 employees coming into North Vancouver would like to live on the Coast if they could get back and forth to work on time. Looking at the amount of inventory currently on the market you really need to price it right if you want to sell. If you do not need to sell why are you on the market? Buyers, it’s a great time to buy though there are signs on the horizon that over the next year things will improve for the seller.

new service to the Coast. Did you know that Gibsons Recycling was started in 2004 without any assistance of any kind? No grants, no low interest loans and no government help. They have funded BC’s very first Resource Recovery Center entirely on their own. They were the first center to recycle both glass and polystyrene and they’re right here in our own community. Bravo!
Selling your home What are the most important things to do to get your house ready for sale? For this answer we went to long-time realtor Bob Michor. First, get rid of clutter and make sure things are neat and tidy including your landscaping. Second, front doorways should be in great shape, including paint, potted plants, and doormats. Thirdly, the price is the big one. Make sure it’s properly priced in a market where there are so many houses available. Forth, don’t bother doing any renovations as people generally want to come in and do their own and you may not realize the money you put in. Finally. make sure you have a realtor you trust and can work with.
