sor who is CBC Radio One's national science columnist, gave a lively and informative description of recent research into the biology of "reversing the aging process".

"It's not a crazy idea that we can cure aging," says Kachur. She notes that other organisms exist that don't age, so it's not unreasonable to think we could replicate that

Although a number of organizations, such as the Sens Research Foundation, are seriously researching the biology of aging, she said that the problem is very complex and a solution is not around the corner. In the meantime, she urged people to pursue healthy habits that have been shown to retard symptoms of aging, including limiting food intake, (especially sugar), exercising, and staying socially active.

Louise Rolland from the University of Victoria's "Self Management BC" program, told the audience about workshops she holds that help people cope with chronic conditions such as chronic pain and diabetes. Programs are held in person on the Sunshine Coast and are also available online through selfmanagementbc.ca.

Rolland says that building a "healing team" and learning how to manage your health condition can make a huge difference in people's quality of life.

Finally, Jody Shaw, physiotherapist, got the audience

on their feet by demonstrating a series of simple exercises that can easily be done at home.

"Our bodies were made to move," says Shaw, urging people to choose an activity they enjoy and make movement a part of their regular routine.

She explained that exercise helps people build strength and balance, reduce injuries, stay mobile, and reduces the risk of the "big four" (heart disease, lung disease, diabetes and cancer). Exercising the body also keeps the brain in shape. It improves mood, memory and thought processes.

The two-hour presentation was broken up with tuneful interludes by local musicians "Reg, Lynne and The Other Guy" (Reg and Lynne Dickson and Warren Allan).

The next MedTalks will be held on Nov. 3. The series focuses on mental, physical and emotional well-being.

Admission to MedTalks is by donation with proceeds to the Sechelt Hospital Foundation.

Appointees to this position will review grant applications from not-for-profit organizations, based on the policy and priorities established by Sechelt Council. The term for these positions will expire November 2020.

Editorial Opinion Love conquers hate Are we entering a new Dark Age? Lately it seems so. News reports are enough to make anyone want to crawl into bed and hide under the covers. But it’s time to rise and shine. To resolve the crises humanity faces, good people must come together.

It’s one lesson from Charlottesville, Virginia. It would be easy to dismiss the handful of heavily armed, polo-shirted, tiki-torch terrorists who recently marched there if they weren’t so dangerous and representative of a disturbing trend that the current U.S. president and his administration have emboldened.

Charlottesville was a tipping point, not so much because hatred and ignorance were on full display (that happens all too often), but because so many people stood up and spoke out against it, and against President Donald Trump’s bizarre and misguided response.

The effects spilled into Canada, most notably with the implosion of the far-right (and misnamed) media outlet The Rebel.

The online platform, born from the ashes of the failed Sun News network, is a good illustration of the intersection between racism, intolerance and anti-environmentalism. Rather than learning from Sun News’s failure that racism and extremism are unpopular and anti-Canadian, Rebel founder Ezra Levant ramped up the bigoted and anti-environmental messaging, with commentators ranting against feminists, LGBTQ people, Muslims and Jews (Levant is Jewish), along with rejecting climate science and solutions to environmental problems.

At first it appeared that the tide of intolerance, emboldened racism and anti-environmentalism was rising, but now it’s looking more like the last desperate efforts of a minority of small-minded people to hold onto ideas and perspectives that history has proven wrong many times.

Canada and the U.S. have checkered racist and colonialist pasts, but for all our faults, we’ve been evolving. Thanks to many people with diverse backgrounds from across the political spectrum who have devoted themselves to civil rights, feminism, Indigenous causes, LGBTQ rights, the environment and more, we’ve made many gains. We have a long way to go, but we must keep on and not let fear, hatred and ignorance block our way.

If we and our children and their children are to survive and be healthy in the face of crises like climate change and terrorism, we must stand together — in unity and solidarity, without fear.

We must use our voices, actions and humour to confront these anti-human undercurrents. We must confront our own prejudices and privilege.

Love conquers fear and hate. We must show those who want to bring us down or take us back to darker times that we outnumber them by far, everywhere. David Suzuki

Letters to the Editor – Opinions Approve the shelter (Addressed to Sechelt council, and copied to the Local) I am writing in support of the District of Sechelt granting a Special Permit for the proposed homeless shelter (at Ebbtide St. and Trail Ave.) Sunshine Coast Homelessness Advisory Committee, of which I have been a member of since 2011, has been looking for a suitable location for more than three years. Over the years, I have come to

terms that there is no 'perfect' location for a homeless shelter. Having said that, I do support the proposed location for the interim modular shelter because: 1. It is on the bus route and is a walkable distance from the town; 2. It is within walking distance to some of the social services; 3. It has only one immediate residential neighbour separated by a green barrier, thus minimizing possible impact to other residents; 4. And, most importantly, it

(Re “Overflow crowd at shelter meeting”, the Local, Aug. 24) I am an administrator of Facebook group "Everything Sechelt" and conducted a poll in our community to see if the proposed shelter has any support. Out of the 72 people polled, almost 70 per cent support this shelter.

As the nearby current shelter no longer has the capacity, informed residents understand evidence and studies that prove homeless shelters reduce crime and issues in the area by keeping homeless people off the streets, as shown at St. Hilda's in Sechelt, and Yaletown in Vancouver (and numerous other national and international studies).

Our community supports the shelter in this location.

With one bedroom rents at about $1,200 per month and two bedrooms at $1,500 and vacancies close to non-existent, it is no wonder that 60 per cent of shelter users are over 55 years. Seniors collect about maximum $1,300 per month from government pensions. They clearly can’t afford rents without additional income.

From my experience at St. Hilda's Anglican Church, the home for the Sunshine Coast Emergency Homelessness Shelter since 2012, the most important question is not so much the location of the shelter but "How the shelter is being managed".

St. Hilda's has been very impressed by RainCity Housing and Support Society in the way they have managed the shelter for the last two years.

In our experience, they have been on top of any issues the Church identified from time to time. Their staff worked with our neighbours who voiced concerns, and invited the clients to address them collectively and be part of the solution. I am confident that the new shelter in its new proposed location will be well managed by RainCity, not to mention that a 24/7 model will enhance the operation with more professional staff on-site.

As for the fear-inciting

About 20 private residences on the Coast have approved holding tanks for environmental reasons and tanks are pumped out about every five to six weeks.

Imagine paying close to $900 every month and a half to pump out your tank.

Are we paying by the turd now?

Sechelt’s report about treatment of sewage from holding tanks is deeply flawed, but then it was written by the Accounting Dept., not engineers or waste treatment experts. The report says, “The cost to treat waste from holding tanks is the same or more than the cost of treating general biosolids”. This is factually incorrect.

You only need to look at Nanaimo Regional District’s website (www.rdn.bc.ca) where it says, “Holding tank waste is less concentrated

From St. Hilda's experience, there has not been a single documented incident where a guest at the shelter posted a threat to a minor for the past five years. I have Sunday Schools kids who have befriended some of the less sociable guests and kept in contact with their buddies after they found housing.

I urge the Council to approve the proposed homeless shelter at your earliest convenience.

Vandals destroy Wormy Lake signs A project to build an easy access trail around Wormy Lake, reached from West Sechelt, has encountered delays and vandalism, but trail builders hope to have the new recreation site open this fall.

The project, led by the Sunshine Coast Trails Society in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Sechelt, the Community Forest, and the Community Foundation, is to build a 3.5-kilometre mostly level trail around Wormy Lake. Much of the area was burned over in the 2015 Old Sechelt Mine fire, but it remains a popular destination for mountain bikers, paddlers, fishers, and campers.

Core funding for the project was a $13,000 Canada 150 grant from the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation. The project also received matching funding from the Community Forest ($15,000), Sechelt Rotary ($4,000) and the Western Canada Sustainable Forestry Initiative Implementation Committee ($2,500).

Elise Rudland, from the Sunshine Coast Trails Society, has been working on the project for the last year. She is pleased at the progress so far—much of the route has been cleared and levelled, and bridges built. But she is disappointed that trail signage is being vandalized.

"We put up a Wormy Lake sign at the turnoff and trailhead signs and they were torn down within two days," said Rudland. "There are people who use this area who feel entitled and don't want anybody else to come here."

"Wormy Lake was chosen for its easy access, topography, wonderful wildlife, and educational opportunities around forest regeneration following the fire. We were looking for a family oriented trail that all could enjoy," said Rudland.

The area is accessed via a logging road that starts at the end of Mason Road. Four kilometres down the road a new parking lot will provide access to the south end of the lake. Construction work is presently on hold due to the extreme fire hazard, but will resume in the fall.

The trail is mostly finished except for a section of boardwalk around a patch of wetland at the east end of the lake. When complete, the trail will encircle the lake.

Rotarians have also invested sweat equity, with 'broom busting' parties to remove invasive Scotch broom, while the heavy work is being carried out by Sechelt Creek Contracting.

Wormy Lake is a pretty, shallow mountain lake, similar in size to Trout Lake. The area has been home to beavers, though they may not be currently in residence. One of the beaver dams broke recently, dropping the level of the lake by about a foot.

Archaeological and environmental assessments were carried out before trail building commenced.

There has been discussion in the community about re-

naming the lake in honour of John Phare, who died fighting the fire in 2015, but no formal request has been made.

The lake lies within Area B of the Sunshine Coast Regional District. Requests for renam-

ing go to BC government, and would need to be initiated or supported by the SCRD. The current name "Wormy" is said to be a translation of a traditional shíshálh name for the lake. Donna McMahon

Shíshálh catch Atlantic salmon

On the morning of Monday August 28, the shíshálh Nation’s Resource Management Department received three specimens of invasive Atlantic salmon, caught in the shíshálh Nation’s waters.

The fishers turning in the specimens were shíshálh Nation members who had been exercising their food, social and ceremonial (FSC) rights, fishing in the Sabine Channel on Sunday August 27, targeting pink salmon for shíshálh Nation elders.

The shíshálh fisheries biologist and staff confirmed all three specimens are Atlantic salmon. Necropsy was performed on the three specimens. Thus far the Nation confirms it was two females and one male Atlantic Salmon, averaging 7-10 pounds, the females with developing eggs. There is a high probability that the Atlantic Salmon are escapees reported on August 19 from Cooke Aquaculture fish farm in Washington State, located 80 nautical miles south of the shíshálh discovery. Unfortunately, the fish are not marked to allow for definitive source identification.

Shíshálh, best known as the salmon people, have long expressed opposition to the culture of non-indigenous salmonid species within their swiya (world/waters/lands/ territory). The shíshálh Nation has a Marine Finfish

The discovery of escaped Atlantic Salmon in our waters is a source of grave concern.

Trash bash targets illegal dump sites The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is inviting all members of the community to participate in the sixth annual “Backroad Trash Bash” taking place on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 11am- 3pm. This year’s event will focus on cleaning up illegal dump sites off forest service roads from Port Mellon to Elphinstone.

Since the event launched in 2012, over 38 tonnes of illegally dumped material has

been hauled out of forests and off backroads and disposed of responsibly at the landfill. Each year, an average of 40 to 50 volunteers help clean up a different area of the Sunshine Coast, such as the Halfmoon Bay to Sechelt area in 2015 and Roberts Creek in 2016.

“Some materials that are dumped can be disposed of for free under product stewardship programs such as electronics, tires, lead acid

batteries, and used paint,” says Kara McDougall, Waste Reduction Coordinator.

“We also find yard waste at dump sites, which can be disposed of for free at one of the SCRD’s residential green waste facilities located at the Pender Harbour Transfer Station, Salish Soils in Sechelt, or at the Gibsons Green Waste Facility.”

BC Hydro set a new record for summer power consumption on Monday evening, Aug. 28 when peak hourly demand – the hour that customers use the most electricity – reached 7,851 megawatts.

Electricity demand increased by 12 per cent over the previous Monday’s peak hourly demand of 7,022

megawatts. .

The new summer record breaks the previous record set on Aug. 11, 2014 of 7,468 megawatts by almost 400 megawatts. It is the second power consumption record broken this year. On Jan. 3, BC Hydro recorded the highest ever peak hourly demand at 10,126 megawatts.

Art Review Anna Nobile Freelance Creative Writer, Arts & Culture

Fans of folk music are in for a very special evening when iconic singer-songwriter Heather Bishop plays in Gibsons on September 6.

The 68-year-old is a force to be reckoned with, always with several projects on the go. “I’m happiest when I’m working,” says Bishop, on the line from her southern Manitoba home which she built herself. “This last winter I installed a whole array

of solar panels so now I get my electricity from the sun as well.” In addition to carpentry, Bishop does plumbing and electrical. She’s also a musician with 14 acclaimed CDs, garnering awards and nominations for her body of work, including a Western Canadian Music Award for Industry Builder of the Year (2006). She founded and still runs her own music company, Mother of Pearl Records. She was one of the earliest champions for women’s rights and continues her fight against racism and homophobia. She is a painter and published author. She was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Med-

al for her contributions to public life and the Diamond Jubilee Medal for outstanding achievement. She is a member of the Order of Canada (2005), Member of the Order of Manitoba (2001) and received an honorary Doctorate from Brandon University (2011). There are few things Bishop hasn’t done. Except, amazingly, after 45 years of touring, perform on the Sunshine Coast.

Her concert at the Heritage Playhouse will be her first on the Coast, and only one of a handful she will perform this year.

Bishop started playing piano when she five, taking up guitar when she was 16.

After 45 years of touring, folk music singer-songwriter Heather Bishop plays her first Sunshine Coast concert Sept.

SAM BAARDMAN PHOTO She’s seen a lot of changes in the music industry, not the least of which is the shift from vinyl records to music streaming. “On one hand that was really bad because it absolutely gutted CD sales,” recalls Bishop. “The flipside was we now had direct access to our market.

For me, I had quick, easy access to a world market that already knew me.” After a long, successful career in music, Bishop has returned to her first love, painting.

“I’m mostly retired from music,” admits Bishop. “My rule now about doing gigs is that I only go out when its somewhere I really want to go or the guys I play with are the best in Canada.” She will be performing with Laurie MacKenzie, guitarist for The Guess Who. “He’s played with all the greats and I feel very honoured that he also plays with me,” says Bishop.

For her first—and perhaps only—concert on the Coast, Bishop is mindful of playing her fans’ favourites. “I’ll be playing a real cross section of 40 years of music,” she says. “There’ll be a little jazz, lots of folk, a little country.

I’m excited!”

Creativity continues

A local spotlight on the creativity of the Sunshine Coast community continues, at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery.

From Sept. 8 to Oct. 1 the Gallery will feature ‘Present Tense’, an exhibition of works recently produced by all of the creative people who support public art through membership at the Gallery.

Creativity is what will be on display here. Art, in all its forms, disciplines, and interpretations. The community of people who support public art run a colourful spectrum, from art school graduates and professionals to undiscovered gems of outsider art and kitsch. In her new collection of essays, Theresa Kishkan unravels an intricately patterned algorithm of crossspecies madrigal, horticulture, and love. Opening with ‘Herakleitos on the Yalakom,’ a turbulent homage to her father, and ending in ‘Euclid’s Orchard,’ amidst bees and coyotes, her touchstones of natural history and family mythology are re-aligned and mortared with metaphysics and math.

Along the way her signature lyricism of place and home sings us from her grandparents’ first homestead near Drumheller via an actual ‘Poignant Mountain’ of

her girlhood to her beloved home on the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast’s Coasting Along Theatre Society will be holding their auditions for their 6th presentation of the perennial favorite ballet, The Nutcracker.

Auditions will be held at the Coast Academy of Dance, in Sechelt, on Sunday Sept. 10.

The rehearsals commence on Sept. 16 and continue each weekend until the performances at Raven’s Cry Dec. 16 – Dec. 19. Most performers will rehearse either Saturday or Sunday, until late November, and then both Saturday and Sunday may be required. With rehears-

als held only on weekends it makes it easy for dancers from across the province to participate in this spectacular production.

“The Nutcracker has parts for all levels of dancers – from the smallest mouse, to the ethereal Sugar Plum Fairy.
