Rebates for new wood stoves polluting wood stoves, in combination with the cold still nights of winter, has a significant impact on air quality. This is one of the leading reasons why some areas of B.C. see more air quality advisories at this time of year.

The Wood Stove Exchange Program helps homeowners by providing a $250 rebate when a new wood-burning, pellet or natural gas stove is purchased and an older model retired.

New emissions-certified wood stoves burn one-third less wood; and reduce smoke and particulates entering the atmosphere by 70 per cent or more.

ties to better inform residents on clean wood burning.

To date, the Province has put $2.5 million toward the program, resulting in the purchase of over 6,600 cleaner-burning models. This equates to an estimated reduction of 410 tonnes of particulate matter pumped into the air each year.

There are close to 70,000 older-model wood stoves still in use around the province.

Older wood stoves can affect the health of homeowners, neighbours and overall airshed health. Exchanging these wherever possible is highly recommended.

As winter’s cold embrace descends upon B.C., the Ministry of Environment is providing over $190,000 to 13 communities and regional districts as part of the Provincial Wood Stove Exchange Program – including $10,650 to the Sunshine Coast Clean Air Society.

Since 2008, the B.C. government, in partnership with the BC Lung Association, has helped British Columbians replace their older model stoves with new cleaner burning models. Last year over 600 stoves were exchanged across the province and the goal is to have another 600 stoves exchanged again this coming year.

Editorial Opinion The most helpful With all the helpful non-profit organizations seeking cash and other forms of donation this time of year, it can be easy to overlook the most broadly helpful non-profit of them all.

Sunshine Coast Community Services Society (SCCSS) provides dozens of programs that cover a spectrum of social needs—everything from its highest-profile program, the Sunshine Coast Food Bank, to child and family development, youth outreach, assistance for those living with mental health issues, to the Yew Transition House for women and children fleeing dangerous situations.

“We also have ‘timed second stage’ housing, that’s also at a secret location on the Coast, that houses women and their children for up to 16 months, depending on the need to help them transition into finding work, finding a place to live, finding furniture,” says Nancy Tiffin, the SCCSS Director of Communication and Revenue Development.

Many Coasters may not realize the breadth of the services SCCSS provides. How about the Sechelt Visitor Centre, and the thrift store on North Rd? Yes, both are programs that SCCSS runs. So are the Volunteer Centre, grow-your-own Community Gardens, and the Welcoming Communities program for new immigrants.

All of these programs require both paid staff and places where the programs can be delivered, which means rental payments and building upkeep. And all of which fall under the often-maligned term, “administration.” “‘Administration’ is not a dirty word,” says Tiffin. “People might think it’s just money lost. It’s not at all. We have about 50 programs and employ just 110 staff, and only 19 of them are fulltime. That’s a pretty tight operation.

“It might appear that we’re a huge organization that gets scads of money from government, but in fact we run on a shoestring.”

Only about three percent of SCCSS revenue comes from donations and thrift store sales, and most cash donations are earmarked by donors for the best-known programs.

“When people think of Community Services, the first things that seem to come to mind are the Food Bank or Transition House,” Tiffin notes. “Over 90 per cent of the donations that come in off the street go straight to the Food Bank. It needs and deserves that money, of course. But my goal is to also raise money beyond that, to help in our administration so that we can hire the best.

“It’s about helping us to raise money to bring excellence to the programs we already have.”

Those programs directly help several hundred individuals and families on the Coast every year, and provide thousands of referrals. And in many cases it’s not so much a hand-out as a hand-up.

“We’re not there to just enable people to continue getting assistance, we’re there to meet people where they’re at and help them rise above their immediate conditions to live full and fulfilling lives,” says Tiffin.

How can Coast residents help? The most straightforward way is to go to www.sccss.com and hit the button labelled “Donate Now.” You could become a regular monthly donor. You could remember SCCSS in your will. Or volunteer within its programs and services. You could donate gently used goods or clothing to the Thrift Store.

With photo-ops by the new PM & Premier of Ontario, it is no wonder that she and most of today’s public perceive the recent arrivals of refugees are a result of the Liberal commitment to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada. The media bias fails to acknowledge that all of the recent arriving refugees are sponsored by individuals or organizations and are here as a result of the work of the previous Harper Conservative Government.

One world

I was riveted by a video that appeared last week on my Facebook feed of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in shirt sleeves, helping a young Syrian refugee girl put on a winter jacket. And all the other pictures: Justin striding through a crowd in the airport, Justin speaking passionately about how this is a safe place, and on and on. Part of me thought: what a stunt, the Prime Minister appearing with these poor people. But then I thought again. What drew me to these pictures was the strong symbolism: Canada is a part of the world, these Syrians are our sisters and brothers. We really are one world.

Locally a group has formed to try to live that realization here on the ground on the Sunshine Coast: the Sunshine Coast Refugee Action Group.

It is just getting started and there are a thousand details to be worked out, but there were about fifty people at the first meeting and a real will to bring at least one family of Syrians here into our community. This is aside from

other private individuals and churches who are also working to sponsor families.

I am very happy to be part of this group, to be working towards opening our community to the world. If you would like to join in, or support the work, watch for the next general meeting coming up in January. Not yet, but there will also be calls for money, clothes, housing and so on.

Science and climate

There remain some Doubting Thomases as to whether the ‘science is settled’ on human exacerbated climate change, just as some still doubt that smoking causes cancer, or whether Elvis really did leave the building. Fortunately, they are in the distinct, albeit persistent minority. In asserting such doubts, now more akin to myths, they demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of science itself, that is, science is never fully settled on any particular theory. Scientific theories are only ever ‘settled’ based on the best scientific evidence available at the time. When evidence emerges suggesting older theories are in need of revision, the theories are revised, based on that new best evidence. Science is a dynamic rather than static process.

Canada’s substantial delegation has just returned from the landmark United Nations Climate Talks in Paris. The Paris Agreement is in now in place. While it represents Park, carolers, hot chocolate and popcorn, bring a non-perishable item for the food bank.

the best political compromise possible at this time across the 190 participating nations, it still falls far short of what the science tells us is needed if we are to avoid climate catastrophes. The Paris Agreement must be regarded as a minimum floor position above which we all need to achieve.

Mother Nature is sending us strong warnings which we ignore at our peril: more frequent and dangerous storms, more extensive and prolonged droughts and fire seasons, accelerating northern warming, rising and acidified sea levels and more. Those who understand the science, the political imperative and who feel a responsibility to future generations need to re-double our efforts to educate and mobilize our citizenry so that we can provide our political representatives with the base of popular support they will need to increase our local, regional and national efforts to combat climate change faster that the Paris Agreement implores.

Homeless man’s memorial �ills church

Following the Nov. 14 death of Paul, who was 56, St. Hilda’s Rector Rev. Clarence Li announced Nov. 20 that BC Housing had come through with funding to keep Sechelt’s Emergency Cold Weather Shelter open every night until the end of March.

Prior to that, the shelter was funded to open only in cases of extreme weather.

The temperature dipped to 6C the night Paul died and

the shelter was not open. The cause of his death has not been made public.

Paul, a First Nations member and navy veteran, was born in Edmonton in 1959.

“His early years were tough ones, but they didn’t break his spirit or sense of humour,” said former shelter co-ordinator Brenda Wilkinson, who delivered the eulogy based on the words of Paul’s sister, Viola.

“He and his six siblings had each other and learned how to survive and love and support one another,” Wilkinson quoted. “Most likely it was these situations that taught him to become the strong independent warrior that life required him to be.”

“He fought his own battles with humour, artistry and kindness, living life in his own way without ever holding a grudge for the hand he was dealt.”

Wilkinson also noted that Paul’s death, “created a public stir, and alerted government representatives of the urgent need to seriously look at others in similar situations.”

Donations made at the memorial were donated to Sunshine Coast Community Services Society for the Cold Weather Shelter Program in Paul’s memory.

Homeless man takes shelter

Around noon on Dec. 14, a resident went to her vacant house in Gibsons and found a man sleeping inside. The man was spoken to by police, and said he had recently been evicted and is currently homeless. He was cooperative and had no related his-

tory of breaking and entering.

The man said he is just going through a difficult time. As there was no damage to the residence and nothing taken, the homeowner was not interested in charges, and the man apologized and left without a problem. Submitted by RCMP

For my final Mayor’s Message of 2015, I would like to draw attention to the work done on the Coast by volunteer and charitable groups and individuals. Sharing of time, resources and talents to benefit others is something that truly builds community.

On the Coast, as elsewhere, local and other government resources are being stretched to cover the basic services that our citizens depend on. There is little left over to address initiatives that are ‘nice’ to have.

In addition, some critical needs have fallen between the cracks of different jurisdictions and mandates. With no core support, they are left to rely on philanthropy to continue. There are countless examples where local residents have stepped up to

Holiday ferry sailings For the holiday period, BC Ferries has “expanded” the schedule between Langdale and Horseshoe Bay. It’s not that there are more ferries; rather the sailings are spread out more, like the summer schedule – for example 5:50pm departure from Horseshoe Bay rather than 5:30pm.

This “expanded schedule” applies to Dec.20 – 29 to allow more in-dock time in Horseshoe Bay, in order to maintain on-time performance during this peak period.

BC Ferries has also added more than 150 extra sailings to the major routes between Vancouver Island and the mainland during this period.

Dec. 23 is expected to be the busiest pre-Christmas travel day. Historically, December 27 is the busiest

post-Christmas travel day. BC Ferries has posted a calendar of forecasted busy sailings for the major routes on its website, which is a great tool to consult when making holiday travel plans.

While arriving early at peak times is often recommended, selecting a sailing at non-peak times is an alternative strategy that can reduce wait times at terminals. Customers with specific sailing times in mind are encouraged to book a reservation. Walk-on travellers are advised that pay parking lots at the major terminals may reach capacity at the height of the season so public transit is a popular option.

“In addition to the extra sailings, more crew members will be on duty on our ships and at our terminals over the holidays to assist our cus-

tomers,” said Corrine Storey, BC Ferries’ Vice President of Customer Services. “Our gift shops are stocked with great gift ideas such as apparel, jewelry, toys and ornaments.

For customers looking to get away this winter, BC Ferries Vacations is offering holiday retreats to Victoria and Vancouver that include ferry travel, hotel accommodation and festive extras.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is making service changes for transit over the holidays that are different from last year.

This year, transit will be running four additional Route 90 trips that will have buses waiting for the 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. ferry on December 23 and 30. These buses will wait until foot passengers have boarded the bus, no matter how late the ferry arrivals. Regular service will arrive and de-

part according to the regular schedule.

“The approach we took last year, which was an attempt to match the adjusted holiday ferry times, was used by very few patrons, so we are taking a different approach this year that we think will benefit more transit riders”, says Gordon Dykstra, SCRD Manager of Transit and Fleet. “We have targeted several specific ferry trips that carried a high number of foot passengers last year, and will ensure

there is a bus to meet them.”

On Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25 and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2016, Sunshine Coast Transit will be operating as per the Sunday schedule. For Boxing Day, Saturday, Dec. 26, Transit will be operating as per the Saturday schedule.

The SCRD would also like to remind transit users that they can take full advantage of free rides on New Year’s Day after 7pm.

Perhaps they aren’t your traditional causes for celebration at this time of year… but looking back over 2015, as your Mayor I celebrate the successes, large and small, I’ve observed in our town over the past 12 months. A new business opens; a small business expands; a local non-profit surpasses its hopes for donations; a group of concerned citizens raises funds towards welcoming a

Happy holidays to all constituents from staff and directors of SCRD. I have mentioned the strategic plan many times in this column during 2015. Now, as the year ends, we can review what was actually accomplished.

The key areas of the plan are: 1. Ensure Fiscal Sustainability. All departments will review their financial and budget proposals to ensure alignment with the strategic plan and ability to improve service.

2. Enhance Collaboration with the Shíshálh (Sechelt) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations. A protocol agreement with the Skwxwú7mesh will be signed in February, which means that SCRD and the Nation will work on environmental processes for resource industries and cleaning up Howe Sound. There will be ongoing efforts to finish all negotiations to finalize a protocol agreement with the Shíshálh this year.

Syrian refugee family to the Coast; hardy volunteers extend a path which will link upper and lower Gibsons accessibly; our town’s Eco Asset management plan gains international recognition; our Council chambers are filled on many Tuesdays with citizens who are truly engaged in shaping the future of their community; ‘SOLD’ signs sprout all around us, indicating an upturn in the local real estate market; and the Public Market project draws closer to its goals… these, and many others I could name, are shared successes of which we can be justly proud.

It has been a busy year, and not without its sorrows and struggles as we said good-bye to several public figures who had given much to the Coast, and watched colleagues and loved ones battle illness. But as a New Year dawns, I am optimistic that the spirit of community which imbues Gibsons will continue to grow and flourish in 2016.

And to you, and those you care about, on behalf of Council and staff at the Town of Gibsons, I wish you a peaceful happy holiday season, and the fulfilment of your fondest hopes in the coming year.

3. Facilitate Community Development. Staff are taking courses to give them the tools to enhance Community Development; this will bring about more cooperation with outside agencies dealing with the SCRD. 4. Recruit, Retain and Acknowledge Staff and Volunteers. In order to recruit and retain a strong staff we need a plan. The Human Resources department has coordinated programs for the CAO to visit all areas of the SCRD and interact with staff in their workplace. A recent survey of staff is giving the administration input for increasing job satisfaction, as well as providing improved training and professional development. Administration and the board have identified a need to look at terms of reference for volunteers in order to improve meetings. This year, numerous functions have acknowledged staff for years of service and volunteers for their many hours of assisting the community.

5. Enhance Board Structure and Processes. Changes have already been put in place to streamline committee and board meetings.

The board meets monthly to discuss ways of improving

procedures for running meetings. The board has voted to try afternoon times for their meetings in 2016 to reduce staff time and allow people to attend in the daytime.

6. Embed Environmental Leadership. Staff and board will examine every report and resolution to make sure that our environmental mandate is part of all recommendations.

7. Support Sustainable Economic Development. Regional Economic Development has been tried in the past with some success and now all local governments have banded together to produce a regional program that has the potential to start in 2016. This program is funded by local governments that will be at arm’s length from a committee of volunteer economic experts who will run the program. The goals of the region will be presented to this committee, which will then make the decisions that will produce support for local business and market the Coast for tourism and development.

Eco-friendly festivities: less packaging please Many families anticipate holiday gatherings for months. Such gatherings bring together friends and family members who may not see one another much throughout the year.

Food tends to be plentiful at holiday gatherings, so it should come as no surprise that the holiday season generates a good deal of waste.

In addition, energy consumption is high during the holiday season. The World-

watch Institute states that the season generates three times as much food waste as other times of the year.

Making the holiday season more sustainable does not mean families must give up their cherished traditions.

Here are several tips to help make your holiday celebrations a bit more eco-friendly.

• Cut down on packaging.

When shopping, seek items that are minimally packaged or shop at retailers that of-

fer package-free products.

Packaging accounts for a considerable portion of the trash that ends up in landfills.

Shopping at local stores and craft fairs can help you avoid too much plastic packaging.

• Decorate with efficient products. Making a home look festive is part of many families' holiday celebrations. Opt for LED holiday lights, which last longer and use a fraction of the energy of traditional lights. Use soy

or beeswax candles and incorporate as many natural items, such as fresh evergreen boughs, branches and berries, as you can find in your decorations.

• Shop smart. Shop at food stores that stock local products so foods do not have to travel great distances to reach your table. Take advantage of local farm stands and other vendors that pop up in the autumn. Remember to bring reusable shopping bags with you on any shopping excursions so you can reduce your reliance on paper and plastic bags.

• Reduce food waste.

People often cook extra food for the holidays out of fear of not having enough for guests.

But leftovers often end up going to waste. Use planners to determine how much food to cook for the number of guests you will be having.

Keep portion sizes healthy by selecting smaller dinner plates and providing foods that are hearty and will fill guests quickly, such as rich proteins and complex carbohydrates. When the meal is done, promptly wrap up leftovers so they don't spoil.

• Use reusable dishes.

Avoid paper and plastic dishes, instead opting for

ones that can be used again and again. Take out your fine china or a festively patterned service set to use. Keep the dishwasher empty so that you can load it up with dirty dishes and run a full load to save even more energy.

• Reuse gift wrapping and accessories. Save wrapping paper and other decorative paper products to use as gift wrap at a later date. Keep a container full of bows and ribbons that are still in good condition as well. Gift bags can often be used several times before they begin to exhibit signs of wear and tear.

Your pets’ Christmas

At this time of year, there are plenty of festive decorations and seasonal treats. Yet the holidays can be hazardous for your pets.

“We want all family members, two-legged and fourlegged, to enjoy a safe, happy and healthy holiday season,” says BC SPCA general manager of community relations Lorie Chortyk.

Some tips to help pet guardians ensure their furry companions’ continued health and well-being include: • Bones are Bad: Avoid giving bones to your dogs or cats, particularly turkey bones. Poultry bones easily splinter and can cause serious injury, while bone fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations.

• Thoughtful Treats:

Chocolate and other sweets should not be given to animals. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that can be deadly to cats and dogs, though not harmful to humans. The best thing you can do for your pet over the holidays is to keep them on their regular diet. Look for healthy animal treats instead of giving your animal companions cookies, rich snacks or sweets meant for people.

• Poisonous Plants: Many popular holiday plants are poisonous to animals including mistletoe, holly, ornamental pepper and Christmas rose. Remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets – especially birds. Poinsettias are not poisonous to pets or people. This has been a long-standing rumour perpetuated for decades. Some

pets may have a sensitivity to the latex contained in the plant and may get diarrhea or vomit.

• Tinsel is Trouble: Having a Christmas tree and pets can be troublesome. Ensure the tree is well-secured and try to place the decorations above paw height. Using string to hang decorations instead of hooks helps, as hooks can be easily dislodged. If possible, use non-breakable ornaments. Avoid using tinsel or angel hair – cats and dogs will ingest both, which can cause intestinal problems. Cords for lights should be made inaccessible to pets, especially chewing puppies and exploring kittens. If you add chemicals to the water reservoir of your Christmas tree to help it last longer, keep in mind those chemicals are toxic to animals and keep the reservoir covered.

• Toy Watch: Avoid purchasing pet toys with small or soft pieces that can be chewed and swallowed. Nylon bones tend to splinter less than plastic ones. Be sure to inspect pet toys regularly and discard deteriorating ones.

The Sunshine Coast has always had a “makers” culture.

At the turn of the century the pioneers built their own homes, grew and processed fruits and vegetables to get them through the winter and many women sewed and mended clothes for large families. At this time of year the plentiful craft fairs show that the creative, maker spirit thrives on the Coast. The Museum shop honours that tradition by offering a selection of wares by local artisans that would make wonderful gifts for friends and loved ones this holiday season.

Looking for good, oldfashioned children’s toys?

We have a range of wooden boats, cars and planes by local woodcrafter Lyndon Bradford, as well as his signature “Bear Paw” salad servers. For the bee lover we have delicate laser cut bee earrings and pins, as well as dragonflies and butterflies,

This month the library held its annual Library Volunteer Celebration. Each year this event provides an opportunity for Library staff to pamper and thank our volunteers. The Library has always relied upon the talent and skills of volunteers to help make the library run smoothly; their presence adds a special atmosphere to the Library and staff are grateful for their contributions.

Art Review Anna Nobile Freelance Creative Writer, Arts & Culture

Kathleen Holmes, Artistic Director of Coasting Along Theatre, exudes enthusiasm, passion and laughter. If she brings half the energy to her production of The Nutcracker as she did to our interview, prepare to be wowed.

Mounting The Nutcracker is no easy feat. There is a cast of 65 in addition to a behind the scenes crew of around 30. Most of the principals and soloists are professionals from off Coast making the scheduling of rehearsals a very tricky business. “This production is a huge community effort,” says Holmes, also referring to donations received from local talent and businesses to help put on the show. “They say arts people have no business sense but it’s not that. It’s that we’re going to do it even if we don’t have any money. We find ways to make the world awesome.” Auditions began in September and Holmes has been working with local dancers ever since. “We work really hard, but we have fun,” says Holmes. Her description of bloodied feet and sprained ankles hardly sounds like fun, but she points out that dancers follow a similar regi-

“It’s just that when it’s show time, you don’t know who’s hurting.”

Being a small town production gives local dancers unique opportunities to learn from the professionals that Holmes brings in. “Erin Mc Neill (dancing the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy) was working with the Arabian dancers and she gave them pointers on how to fix their feet or why this wasn’t working, or that wasn’t working, so they are getting the kind of feedback that you don’t often get.”

The life skills being imparted are also invaluable. “Discipline is number one,” says Holmes. “I’d hire a dancer in a heartbeat if I was a business owner. They are dedicated and they know the deadline.

You learn to juggle your time, learn to be flexible as things

keep changing, and you learn teamwork. So even if they don’t go into the professional dance world, all these experiences will help them.”

For the audience, Holmes promises something for everyone, from the dancing to the music to the costumes and sets. “Even special effects!” she says laughing. And as she rightly points out, “It just wouldn’t be Christmas without The Nutcracker.”

The Nutcracker runs December 19-22 at Raven’s Cry Theatre with both evening and matinee performances.

The 2016 Banner Project and the Young Artist Award submissions have been on display at the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre since December 2. This coming Saturday, December 19 marks both the end of the exhibit and the award ceremonies for both projects. The events will be held at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, at the corner of Trail and Medusa in Sechelt.

At 12:30pm, December 19, Sechelt Mayor Bruce Milne along with Banner project sponsor Neil Clayton, from Clayton Heritage Market, will be handing out the awards for the 20 selects for the 2016 Banner Project.

The theme for 2016: “The Sunshine Coast – The Way it Was”. Entries were received from: Gibsons Elementary School, Kinikinnick Elementary School, Langdale Elementary School, L’Ecole du Pacifique; Madeira Park Elementary School, Nest Nature School, Roberts Creek Elementary School and West Sechelt Elementary School.

At 2:30pm, December 19, the Young Artist Awards for 2015 will be awarded. A jury of professional artists assessed the works of 33 young artists ranging in age from 5-17 years of age who submitted in total over 100 works. All work submitted must have been created outside of school hours. At the awards ceremony the jurors offer their criteria to all of the participating artists. Awards have been made possible by the kind support of the Sechelt Rotary, Gibsons School of the Arts & Opus, Framing and Art Supplies.

Tip of the Week: Christmas is just 1 week away. This time of celebration is linked to Winter Solstice which marks the beginning of the ‘natural New Year’ which can also be described as the mark of a new round of seasons.

As well, this turning point can be described as a new cycle of the Sun’s light on our planet and this specifically is what Western Astrology is based upon. This time-honored event actually reaches as far back to the very inception of solar calendars which go back thousands of years and is shared cross culturally and internationally.

That this time of cyclic renewal has become a time of giving gifts is linked to the story of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth and the story of the 3 Wise Men who, as the story goes, having observed the rare ‘signs’ in the heavens, travelled far distances bearing gifts in praise and honor of this sacred event.

Some scholars and historians have challenged the details of this story quite significantly. Also, the commercialization of this ‘spiritual’ event does have its share of pitfalls.

Yet there is something very special, magical even, in this darkest time of the year up here in the Northern Hemisphere and the exchanging of gifts, feasting and merry making also has its many merits as it evokes a spirit of love and selflessness in the hearts of people the world over.
